Needing Help with that M.E.? What is a M.E. Anyway??

Have you thought about applying for a National Trip or Key Award or County Scholarship but was not sure about the requested M.E. for the application? Have you wondered just what is a M.E. anyway and what can it do for me? Well, wonder no more! Plan to attend one of two opportunities sponsored by the 4-H Awards and Recognition Committee to learn more about the M.E. Attention 4-H Club Members! The 2018 National 4-H Week promotional theme will be “Grow True Leaders”. Exploring Project for First Year Members!

If you are joining a 4-H club and you are in 3rd grade or if you are a 4th grader and joining 4-H for the first time you are considered an EXPLORER, and you should enroll in Exploring as your only project. You can also enroll in another project or two, like Horse if you are planning on doing horse activities so that you can be included in horse event information. Exploring is set up that way for first year members so that they can “Explore” a wide variety of areas in 4-H so that the next year, you can enroll in those areas for projects. You are only an Explorer for one year. Exploring is just for that first year in grades 3 or 4. If you have questions about Exploring or any area in 4-H, please contact the Polk County Extension Office at [email protected] or call the Extension Office at 715.485.8600.

4-H National Youth Science Day 2018- “Code Your

World”

This October, 4-H and Google will launch an exciting National Youth Science Day challenge, Code Your World, inviting kids to get involved in computer science (CS) through hands-on doing. The national NYSD celebration kicks off October 1, and coding events can take place all throughout October.

Code Your World is a four-part challenge that teaches kids ages 8-14 to apply CS to the world around them through hands-on activities. Developed by Google and West Virginia University Extension Service, it includes a computer-based activity on Google’s CS First platform and three unplugged activities that bring coding to life through games and interaction. Invite kids to get involved in computer science with our Code Your World Challenge! Code Your World uses games and hands-on fun to teach kids important CS and computational thinking concepts, and is perfect for first-time and beginner coders ages 8-14.

What to Expect Code Your World is easy for volunteers, parents, and clubs with or without computer science experience to facilitate. The accompanying kit includes clear instructions for facilitators and offers both low and no-tech options for events without Internet access. This year’s activity will not only teach computer science to kids, but also build confidence and teach skills relevant across fields from agriculture to technology to the arts. Several kits are here for Polk County 4-H clubs to pick up. Please contact Chuck Prissel at [email protected] or call 715-485-8600 to reserve your kit today! 4-H Volunteer Impact Study – You May Be Contacted

What you do makes a difference! We are excited to share that our state will be participating in 4-H Volunteer Impact Study of volunteers in the North Central Region. This survey is being conducted as a part of 12 state effort to document the impact of volunteering. It will focus on three areas:

· the personal benefits of your volunteer experience;

· the impact you have on the organization by volunteering; and

· how your volunteer efforts contribute to your community in which you live and work.

A random sample of 1000 volunteers from each state will be surveyed. This study will be conducted through an electronic survey. If you are selected you will receive an e-mail to let you know you have been selected to participate. You may be picked!!! If you are, please respond. We want to hear from you and learn from your volunteer experiences. Your comments will be used to quantify the personal, organizational and public impacts of volunteers involved with 4-H Youth Development Programs in our twelve state region. Your impact is great and we want to hear from you!!!

VOLUNTEER BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS

February 2015

Families, individuals, and organizations trust the University of Wisconsin-Extension to provide quality leadership and care for those who are involved in Extension-sponsored programs. The opportunity to work as a volunteer with UW- Extension is a privileged position that should be held only by those who are willing to demonstrate behaviors that fulfill this trust.

All UW-Extension volunteers are required to complete the UW-Extension Youth Protection program. This includes: 1) a background check for arrest and conviction records, 2) participation in a volunteer orientation program, and 3) signing the Volunteer Behavior Expectations form. The primary purpose of this process is to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants (i.e., youth, adults, salaried and volunteer staff).

UW-Extension volunteers are expected to abide by the following behavior standards established by UW-Extension and to conduct themselves as positive role models for program participants. All UW-Extension volunteers are ultimately accountable to UW-Extension for their UW-Extension related activities.

As a UW-Extension volunteer, I will:

• Cooperate with and support UW-Extension staff to jointly further the mission of the UW-Extension. • Accept supervision and guidance from UW-Extension staff or designated management volunteers. • Conduct myself in a manner that is in the best interest of program participants and UW-Extension and will not use

the volunteer position or title for purposes of private or personal gain. • Use appropriate University research based resources/information. • Make all reasonable efforts to ensure that programs are accessible to all individuals regardless of race, color, sex,

creed, disability, religion, national origin, ancestry, age, sexual orientation, pregnancy, marital or parental status. • Abide by all local, state and federal laws and UW-Extension and U.S.D.A. rules, policies and guidelines. • Conduct myself with courteous manners and language, exhibiting good sportsmanship, serving as a positive role

model, treating others with respect, and demonstrating reasonable conflict resolution skills. • Not consume or be under the influence of alcohol or illegal substances while in the role of a UW-Extension

volunteer, nor allow youth participants under my supervision to do so. • When transporting youth or adults, operate motor vehicles and other equipment in a safe and reliable manner

and only with a valid operator’s license and the legally required insurance. I will comply with all motor vehicle-related state regulations and laws.

• Treat animals in a humane manner and teach program participants to provide appropriate animal care and management.

• Report suspected verbal, sexual, physical abuse and neglect of youth to local authorities. • Not conceal carry firearms and/or weapons while acting in a volunteer role. I understand that if I am a 4-H Youth

Development shooting sports volunteer, I am expected to openly carry/transport 4-H shooting sports equipment in designated areas.

• Immediately notify my county UW-Extension Educator/Agent of any changes with my status (e.g. contact information, criminal arrest, charge or conviction history, driving privileges, etc.)

I have read and understand and agree to abide by these expectations for volunteers. I understand that suspension or termination of my position as a volunteer will result if I do not meet these expectations. _______________________________________________________ _____________________________________ Volunteer Printed Name County _______________________________________________________ _____________________________________ Volunteer Signature Date
