Our life’s journey has offered us the opportunity to live in various places: Colby, KS; Colorado Springs, CO; Fairfax, VA; Cupertino, CA; Chicago, IL and finally back full circle to Minnesota. We have two grown (and married) children: Seth lives in Colorado, Lizz lives outside of Chicago, and we have (as of Sept 14 th ) two grandsons! Lord of all, of church and kingdom, in an age of change and doubt, keep us faithful to the gospel; help us work your purpose out. Here, in this day’s dedication, all we have to give, receive; we, who cannot live without you, we adore you! We believe! God is here at Our Savior’s; present in the many ministries in which you serve one another and the community around you. In the months ahead we will reflect on who you have been, who you are now and who God is calling you to be. It is a journey we will travel together as you prepare to call a new pastor. I look forward to our time together and feel privileged to be a partner with you in this journey. Yes, this is an exciting time for Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. Church News

Hola!Hola!Hola!Hola!

Dave and I will be leaving on February 11, 2013 for the Dominican

Republic. We are looking forward to this mission, as we have so

many things to accomplish in just 5 weeks. We will be returning on

March 19th.

If there is anyone who would want to join us for a week or 2 feel free

to contact us or the church office.

Dave & Bobbie 879-9339 Church 879-1535

Thank you!

Dave and Bobbie

Reformation Sunday8

The signs of fall have begun: colorful leaves are appearing, the air is chilling, and the days are turning shorter.

The church has signs of fall8.not just turning on heaters or restarting boilers, but as we enter the closing months of the church year we celebrate of the birth of our Lutheran Church on Reformation Sunday.

Martin Luther did not set out to begin a new church; and to be called “Lutheran” in his day was a derogatory slur. What was foundational to Luther’s belief and what he proclaimed was the good news: by grace through faith we are justified. By grace we are set free to serve, welcome, and share; by grace we are set free to love neighbor, stranger and even enemy.

Oct. 28th we celebrate Martin Luther’s faith – the faith we received and the faith we pass on. So

come celebrate the gifts of grace that God gives to each of us as we celebrate our faith: the faith in which we are baptized, the faith in which we are fed bread and wine, the faith in which we are sent forth to share God’s love with all the world.

Fall Produce Swap There will be a table located in the Narthex for those who want give/receive fresh garden produce. This will be available until the end of October.

Everyone is welcome to participate.

A basket for monetary donations will be left on the table for the local food shelf

Lakes & Pines Winter Clothing Drive:

Lakes & Pines is conducting a winter clothing drive for local families with children in need of coats, gloves, scarves, hats, boots and snowpants.

Drive ends October 5, 2012.

Local drop off sites are: Comm. Services Bldg in Cloquet, and Carlton Co. HHS in Moose Lake.

Say “I Love You….”

Say "I Love You" with a Lutheran Marriage Encounter weekend. Get away from the everyday demands of the world so the two of you can really focus on each other.

You'll spend two nights in a comfortable hotel and enjoy five delicious meals from Friday at 7:00 pm to Sunday at 5:00 pm. Four presenting couples, including a Lutheran clergy couple, give a series of presentations followed by questions the couples discuss in the privacy of their hotel room. There is no counseling and no group sharing. No one tries to change who you are. It's great for couples who already have a good marriage and want to enrich their relationship, but it also does wonders for those marriages that have lost their luster through years of child rearing and work obligations.

The Fall Lutheran Marriage Encounter Weekends in Minnesota are October 19-21 in Brooklyn Center and November 16-18 in Duluth. Please register several weeks in advance. For more information, contact Larry & Coke Guilfoile at 612-257-6960, Pete & Phyllis McMahon at 763-561-1575 or visit www.godlovesmarriage.org

UPDATE: Eighty-five (85) members attended the special congregational meeting held on September 9 and with a vote of 82 Yes to 3 No approved the slate of 8 members selected. The Call Committee will meet with a Synod representative and begin their work of searching for a permanent pastor for OSLC. The Call Committee met with

the Synod on September 27.

Applicants chosen for the Call Committee are:

Jonathon Lamb, Karen Edin, Rob Macaulay, Mary Carlson, Bob DeCaigny,

Prayer Group

6:00 p.m.

Our Savior’s Chapel Prayer is the name we give to the experience of being in communication with God, wherever we are and whatever we are doing. Prayer is an experience because it involves our senses, minds, souls and spirits. Prayer is communication because it involves giving and receiving. It is sharing between two living, personal beings—God and yourself. In prayer you are sharing your life: your needs, feelings, concerns, and desires. God is responding with divine presence, consolation, insight and change.

You are invited to join together in prayer at Our Saviors the second Monday of the month (October 8th) at 6:00pm in the Chapel.

In prayer we present our whole life and the lives of others to God, so that God may be known and lives may be touched by grace.

Church News

Congratulations to Pastor Becky and her husband Mike in becoming grandparents, again! Kristofer Stanley Heil Sidenbender was born Friday, September 14, weighing 8lbs, 20.5 inches long. Congratulations!

Join in the excitement of MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) and explore this year’s theme: “Plunge: Love as if your life depended on it”. MOPS is for all moms with children between birth and kindergarten and offers encouragement, inspiration, and guidance during this hectic, yet critical stage of motherhood.

Meetings are held on the second Thursday of every month from 6-8 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. There is a $39 annual registration fee that includes both local and MOPS International membership. MOPS benefits include monthly meetings, special events, monthly newsletters, bi-monthly MOMSense magazines, weekly mom Emails, MOPS reusable shopping bag, MOPS Iron On Appliqués, and MOPS Stickers featuring VeggieTales. Your first meeting is free and partial scholarships are available. Childcare is available at all meetings.

Our next meeting will be held on Thursday, October 11 and will feature a speaker on breast cancer, refreshments, creative activities, fellowship and fun. Mark your calendars and join us as we begin another wonderful year!

We would like to extend a huge thank you to our returning mentor mom Pat Turonie. Our group is extremely blessed to have this amazing woman join us every month and provide us with guidance on our mothering journey.

For more information call 879-6760. MOPS International is on the Web at www. MOPS.org. We can also be found on Facebook.

If you are not a mother with preschool age children, you can still be an important part of this ministry in various ways: 1) Pray for this ministry and the Steering Team members who lead it. 2) Spread the word of MOPS throughout the community. 3) Volunteer a couple of hours of your time once a month, regularly or occasionally, to care for the children while moms attend meetings. 4) Be a mentor to moms. We hope you can join us as either a mom or a volunteer.

This year’s focus theme verse is “Love each other as if your life depended on it”. 1 Peter 4:8-11.

Church News Thoughts from the Chaplain

October 2012

It’s fall. Welcome into the world of color, cool weather, and the beginning of a new season. Something we in the north celebrate. We know it is coming, some look forward to it; others wish it would hold off a little longer. On the positive side, I love to walk in the dry leaves, hearing the crush. See the fall colors of leaves, and those fall flowers what brilliant color, how can God make such beauty. Each year I ask the same question. I am in awe!!! Some facts about our Bible:

1. The shortest chapter in the Bible is Psalm 117.

2. The longest chapter in the Bible is Psalm 119.

3. Psalm 118 is the chapter in the center of the Bible.

There are 594 chapters before Psalm 118 and 594 chapters after Psalm 118. Add all these numbers up and you get 1188.

The center verse of the Bible is Psalms 118:8. It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man. Justification: is the process by which sinful human beings are made acceptable to a holy God. See Romans 3:24 Sanctification: is the process of God’s grace by which the believer is separated from sin and becomes dedicated to God’s righteousness. See John 17:7 or Rom. 8:3-4 How each Apostle died

1. Matthew – suffered martyrdom by being slain with a sword at Ethiopia

2. Mark – expired at Alexandria, after being cruelly dragged through the streets.

3. Luke – was hanged upon an olive tree in the land of Greece.

4. John – was put in a caldron of boiling oil but escaped death miraculously and was banished to Patmos.

5. Peter – was crucified at Rome with his head downward.

6. James, the Greater, was beheaded at Jerusalem.

7. James, the Lesser – was thrown from a lofty pinnacle of the temple and then beaten to death with a fuller’s club.

8. Bartholomew – was flayed alive.

9. Andrew – was bound to a cross, whence he preached to his persecutors until he died.

10. Thomas – was run through the body with a lance at Coromandel in the East Indies.

11. Jude – was shot to death with arrows.

12. Matthias was first stoned and then beheaded.

13. Barnabas – of the Gentiles was stoned to death at Salonica.

14. Paul – after various tortures and persecutions, was at length beheaded at Rome by the Emperor Nero.

Autumn leaves send happiness in God’s creation and a time of refreshing breezes.

U are Special!!!!

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

Operation Christmas Child is a ministry that provides Christmas gift boxes and the story of Jesus to children all over the world. To make it more convenient for the congregation, the Fellowship team will provide some plastic containers. So if you would like to be part of this ministry pick up an information pamphlet in the narthex or church office starting October 7th. You can either take a container from the church or purchase your own container or fill a cardboard shoe box you may have at home. The plastic containers are a nice bonus as the child can reuse them. Fill the box with appropriate gifts and return the filled box to the church office NO LATER THAN NOVEMBER 11TH. Please enclose a check for $7 to cover the expense of shipping each box. Do not wrap the box in Christmas paper. If you want, you can line the clear plastic box with colorful wrapping paper. Then most importantly, pray for the child who will receive your shoe box gift.

NEW HORIZONS CHRISTIAN SCHOOL NEWS

Our new year has finally BEGUN!! We have 13 excited 4 year olds filling our classroom with more enthusiasm than we have seen in a long time. Smiles, hugs and a desire to learn everything there about all the wonderful things God has given to us. We are also enjoying coming to all the bible study groups, the Dart Ball game men and meeting everyone in church with a song and a smile.

This past month we have played games of the Olympics and all became gold medal winners. Our other topics were creation, we are special and apple growing time. We have been very busy!

We look forward to October as we explore what will we be when we grow up. If you have a career that you would like to share with us, please come to our class and tell our children.

Have a great time enjoying all the beauty that God has created for us in the colors of the season.

God's love, from the teachers and the children of New Horizon

Shiny & White Paper OH MY!!... Our Savior’s New Horizons wants to extend a huge thank you to everyone that faithfully brings their shiny & white paper to us!

Our paper delivery in September was 1920 lbs.!! An all time record for our school.

Remember~ Our Savior’s New

Horizons collects paper all year around, so keep it coming...

Thank you!

Hmmm...What’s Baking?

Butter braids!Butter braids!Butter braids!Butter braids! Back by popular demand, Butter braids will go on sale

Sunday, October 7 in the narthex between services and after second service. This yummy, hand-made pastry will be on sale for 3 short weeks, so be sure to put in your order! All profits go to Our Savior’s New Horizons Christian School.

We know many of you would like to help the school financially. This year we ordered gobs of extra order forms which will be available at our Butter braid sales table in the narthex and in the church office. If you feel the calling,

please pick up a form and take it to work or pass it amongst friends and family. We will be happy to sort your order for

pick up and, if necessary, help deliver your order!

Thanks so much for your support!

Notes from the Director...

The irony with writing to my church family with monthly updates, is often the fundraiser or event I’m writing about hasn’t happened yet. When you read this, we will have just wrapped up our Fall Rummage & Bake Sale. I’ve no doubt it was a success! I can honestly say I’m humbled by the response from our church family bringing in items for the sale. Thank you to everyone that supported Our Savior’s New Horizons Christian School by donating items, attending our event and gifting us with monetary donations! Your support is the blessing that allows this important outreach ministry to continue!

It’s come to my attention that most of you are unaware we have a beautiful new children’s library next to the preschool room! Our lead teacher, Thera Wiersma, has been faithfully collecting children’s books for many years. This past Spring when we realized we had officially run out of space to collect any more books, we decided to create a library. Now our preschoolers are able to visit their own library once a week. They choose books to check out, learn how to care for them and enjoy lessons and activities in our beautiful new room. THANK YOU Dave and Julie Beal, Ray Wiles, Bob McDonald and our preschool Board for your time, talents and donations to establish this library!

God’s Blessings ~

Kristina Remus,

NHCS Interim Director

OSLC Parish Planning Council Meeting Highlights Tuesday, August 21, 2012

• Treasurer’s Report –A review of the last 6 months shows a shortfall of ($21,104). July’s actual income was $25,227.79 (over the amount budgeted) and actual expenses were $19,582 (under budget). Comparing actual income and expenses to budgeted income and expenses, we currently have a YTD shortfall of ($14,065.95). That shortfall should shrink in August again due to reduced pay for pastoral care, but the shortage may grow in September as we pay for a full-time

pastor.

• Pastor’s Report – Curt Nelson reported that Pastor Rebekah (Becky) Wagner will be here as an Intentional Interim

pastor under a six-month renewable contract beginning September 1.

• Team Leader Reports

Church Properties - A group has been designated to clean carpets. The flooring project will begin on the 28th when the old flooring in the hallways around the kitchen and the entries will be torn out. Parish Fellowship Team - The annual picnic was a success, even though it rained, but had fewer people than expected. Pastor John and Marilyn were honored and presented with gifts of appreciation. The next event planned is a Hobby Night scheduled for Thursday September 20 from 6:30 to 8:00 in the Fellowship Hall. Tables will be set up to accommodate and display hobbies. The Team will serve dessert. Worship, Arts and Music - Regular rehearsals will resume in September for Celebration Choir, the Praise & Worship team and the Handbell Choir. Deacons – Our new Interim Pastor Becky Wagner will be attending and participating in Deacons meetings starting in

September.

Christian Education - The traditional Rally Sunday to be held on September 9 will have some new features this year. Children will be registering for Sunday school as usual, but in addition various Ministry Teams will have representatives and displays to provide information, answer questions and recruit new members. A potluck dinner will follow the 10:45 service after the special congregational meeting. New Horizons Christian Preschool enrollment is down and the weekly schedule may need to be revised to adjust. For children enrolled in NHCP, the Council Advisory Team has given permission to use the church van to transport children from here to Zion Lutheran Church, the new site for the “Kid’s Corner” daycare program. The preschool board is anticipating a number of special fundraisers this coming year. Stewardship – The new envelope numbering system went into effect during the last year, reducing costs for the church. There will be information for options available for the “Simply Giving” (electronic withdrawal) for church offering at the

Rally Sunday Ministry Fair.

Evangelism - The “Know Your Neighbor” pad information is being reviewed to increase its effectiveness in welcoming

prospective new members.

up. Closing will be at the end of September. The total revenue from the lot is $21,500.

• New Business – Call Committee Selection

The Ministry Team leaders (voting members) of the PPC and the Council Advisory Team (church officers) screened 16 applicants for the Call Committee. To assure that the process and guidelines were understood and followed, the group reviewed informational handouts from the NE MN Synod and the bylaws of OSLC. The qualifications of each candidate were reviewed and selection was made by closed (paper) ballot. The applicants selected were: Mary Carlson,

Bob DeCaigny, Karen Edin, Mary Krohn, Jonathan Lamb, Rob Macaulay, Bill Singpiel and Sue Stahl.

According to our constitution, a special congregational meeting is necessary to ratify the slate of committee members. That meeting is scheduled for September 9th. President Curt Nelson thanked the group for their careful deliberations and

prayerful selection of our Call Committee members.

• The next PPC meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 18 at 7:00.

UPDATE: Eighty-five (85) members attended the special congregational meeting held on September 9 and with a vote of 82 Yes to 3 No approved the slate of 8 members selected. The Call Committee will meet with a Synod representative and

begin their work of searching for a permanent pastor for OSLC.
