BLIND DATE WITH A BOOK-TEEN VERSION

CLIFTON PARK – Teens entering grades 6 and up are invited to participate in Blind Date with a Book program at the Clif-ton Park-Halfmoon Public Library, Wednesday, January 22 at 4:30pm. Have you ever picked up a book to read, only to put it back because you didn’t like the cover, or the title, or the author? Here’s how Blind Date with a Book works - teens will pick out their favorite book (or books) and cover them with plain brown paper. Then they’ll write short descriptions of the book on the paper cover and decorate it, but the title and author will NOT be given. We’ll make a display of them in the Teen Place and encourage others to check out the books, based only on the description. Creativity at its best! Registra-tion required. Register online, in-person at the Welcome Desk or call the Library at 371-8622.

NYSDOT TO HOST PUBLIC OPEN HOUSES FOR BRIDGE PROJECT

REXFORD - Work Proposed for the Rexford Bridge on Route 146 in Niskayuna and Clifton Park. The New York State De-partment of Transportation (NYSDOT) will host two public open houses regarding a proposed project to make improve-ments to the Rexford Bridge on State Route 146 and at the intersections of Route 146 with Aqueduct Road/Williams Road in the Town of Niskayuna, Schenectady County and the intersection with Riverview Road/Alplaus Road in the Town of Clifton Park, Saratoga County. The open houses will be held on Thursday, January 23, 2014, starting at 7:00 p.m. at the Rexford Fire Station at 1601 Route 146 in Rexford (Clifton Park) and on January 30, 2014 starting at 7:00 p.m. at Niska-yuna Town Hall at 1 Niskayuna Circle in Niskayuna. The Nis-kayuna meeting will be a public hearing. A presentation on the project will be given at 7:00 p. m. followed by a time for public comments and questions. Staff from NYSDOT will be available to discuss the project in an informal environment before and after the presentation. Comments and input re-garding the project are welcome as part of NYSDOT’s con-tinual effort to encourage public participation in the devel-opment of transportation projects. The project proposes to replace the Rexford Bridge and provide improvements to the intersections. The current preferred alternative adds lanes to the intersections and provides a multi-use trail between the intersections. The traffic signal at the Aqueduct Road inter-section is proposed to be replaced by a roundabout. There is currently no schedule for project construction. DID YOU KNOW? A review published in a 2010 issue of the medical

journal Pediatrics found that children benefi ted from weight training. In the review, researchers from the Institute of Train-ing Science and Sports Informatics in Cologne, Germany, analyzed studies that focused on children and weightlifting. The review looked at studies going as far back as 60 years, fi nding that children and adolescents who lifted weights grew stronger. Those who participated in strength train-ing twice per week gained more strength than those who participated just once per week. These fi ndings contradict a longstanding belief that children do not actually get stron-ger. But while children and adolescents may be getting stronger, researchers found that they do not add as much bulk or obvious muscle mass as adults. Instead, research-ers feel the strength changes in children and adolescents stem more from neurological changes that make their ner-vous systems and muscles interact more effi ciently. Though parents have long worried that strength training will stunt their children’s growth, researchers now feel that properly supervised strength training will not stunt growth or lead to growth-plate injuries and will perhaps even reduce their risk of injury as opposed to increasing that risk.

DID YOU KNOW? Cyclists may soon rethink their helmet choices. Anna Haupt and Terese Alstin, two post-graduate students at the Univer-sity of Lund in Sweden, designed an invisible helmet that is actually an air bag cyclists can wear around their necks. Named the “Hoevdig,” the protective gear employs sensors to detect sudden jolts. When such jolts are detected, the sen-sors trigger a helium gas cylinder to infl ate the helmet and prevent injury. According to the Insurance Institute for High-way Safety, cyclists account for 2 percent of motor vehicle crash deaths in the United States, and 72 percent of those fa-talities are adults over the age of 20. Helmets can signifi cantly reduce head injuries and death, but many adults do not like wearing the standard helmets made of styrofoam and plastic, feeling such helmets are cumbersome. The Hoevdig is poised to change how cyclists view helmets, but it may take some time for the helmet to catch on in North America. So far it is available only in Europe and would have to meet require-ments established by the Consumer Product Safety Commis-sion to be sold in the United States.

THESE SNACKS PACK AN ENERGETIC PUNCH Many adults fi nd themselves feeling drowsy in the hours after they eat lunch. A heavy lunch, a staid offi ce atmosphere or a combination of the two can make professionals feel sleepy as the workday winds down. Though some might opt for a second cup of coff ee, the immediate energy boost provided by caff eine quickly wears off , leaving men and women feeling even more tired as a result. Oftentimes, the right mid-afternoon snack can provide the energy boosts adults need to stay productive throughout the workday. The following are a handful of healthy snacks that tend to provide a lot of energy.

* Greek yogurt: Greek yogurt has become increasingly popular in recent years, as more and more people are opting for this snack that’s rich in calcium, protein, phosphorous, and zinc. Traditional yogurt tends to provide a quick energy boost, as it is generally easy to digest, before that boost quickly fades. Greek yogurt is thicker than traditional yogurt, so it does not digest so easily, producing more sustained energy levels as a result. However, Greek yogurt is also loaded with protein, helping men and women feel fuller longer. That can be benefi -cial for those who want to lose weight, as the feeling of fullness that Greek yogurt provides means those who eat it are less likely to eat more snacks throughout the day.

* Whole grains: Whole grain snacks are loaded with energizing ingredients, including fi ber, iron, magnesium, and protein. Whole wheat snacks are also loaded with B vitamins, which help people fi ght fatigue and stabilize blood sugar levels. In addition, the body takes lon-ger to absorb the complex carbohydrates found in whole wheat snacks, which means the body can maintain stable blood sugar levels for extended periods of time, and that leads to a long-lasting energy boost. White bread and simple carbohydrates provide an immediate, yet temporary, energy boost when people’s blood sugar levels spike. But once that initial energy boost subsides, men and women will be left feeling fatigued.

* Edamame: Many people may know edamame from recipes, but few might know edamame can be an energy-boosting snack as well. Edamame are boiled soybeans that are rich in pro-tein, iron, omega-3 fatty acids, and fi ber. Each of these things helps the body sustain energy levels. In addition, edamame is also packed with a trace mineral known as molybdenum that helps cells function properly while enhancing alertness and improving concentration.

* Almonds: Almonds are loaded with ingredients that increase energy levels, including vita-min E, phosphorous, vitamin B2, and magnesium, which serves numerous benefi cial func-tions, including aiding in the production of energy and relieving stress and anxiety. Because they are rich in protein and fi ber, almonds take longer for the body to digest, which means

energy levels will stay up for longer periods of time than they would for those snacks that are easily digested. Al-monds also contain healthy fats that curb appetite, mak-ing it less likely that men and women who snack on almonds will overeat and fi nd themselves fi ghting the fatigue that’s often a byproduct of overeating.

DID YOU KNOW? People frequently take human hair for granted, especially if they have it in abundance. While hair can help keep your head warm, there’s more to hair than what meets the eye. For a healthy individual with no hair diseases, hair is very strong with enormous tensile strength. In fact, human hair is about as strong as copper wire of the same diameter. That means one strand of hair can support up to 100 grams in weight. Considering the average head of hair contains about 100,000 to 150,000 strands of hair in all, the combined strength of human hair could feasi-bly support up to 12 tons, or the equivalent of two African elephants.

KittyDomestic Short Hair Mix,

5 Year Old Male, White/BlackHi there, my name is Kitty. I’m a handsome puss with a soft white coat that has black spots. I like to be petted, but I’m feeling a little shy right

now. I had to come to the shelter because my former family moved and couldn’t take me. I lived with other cats and a dog. I’m going to need a bit of coaxing to help me relax in a new home. Some fun toys will help with

that, I’m sure. Then you’ll find me a good guy to have around because I’m really a sweetie.

I am an effervescent, super friendly girl who is sooo happy to see you! I love to go for walks, play and then have a nice seat next to you on the park bench. I am 8 years old mixed breed. I promise to bring a smile to your face

every day & be your lucky “Penny”!

Hello, my name is Songheart and I am a very large white fellow. I’m friendly and vocal, especially when I need some attention. I came to the

shelter with three house mates and our story is a sad one. Our family was evicted and they abandoned us. The landlord took us all in for a while, but just couldn’t manage so many animals any more. I really need to lose some

weight, so when I’m adopted, you should work with your vet to establish a proper diet for me. I may be big, but I’m still young so if you have lots of toys and we play together that will help me regain my once svelte figure.
