SHARE THE BEAUTY OF

YOUR COMMUNITY

WITH A FRESH AIR CHILD THIS

SUMMERCAPITAL DISTRICT - This summer, share the beauty of your community with a Fresh Air child while enjoy-ing the pure joys of summer in your own backyard! Thou-sands of volunteer host fam-ilies in rural, suburban, and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada open their hearts and homes to New York City children from low-income communities through The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family pro-gram. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Host families open their homes to children who might not otherwise be able to enjoy a summer away from New York City. Fresh Air children experience simple pleasures like running bare-foot through the grass, swimming in a cool lake, and gazing at star-filled skies. Through the eyes of Fresh Air children, families often rediscover the beauty of their own communi-ties. For more information on how you can make summer special for a Fresh Air child, contact Tenniel Hansen at 518-441-4407 or visit The Fresh Air Fund at www.freshair.org.

TWO TOWNS - ONE BOOKCLIFTON PARK/HALFMOON - The Friends of the Library are pleased to announce the continuation of our community-read program: Two Towns - One Book: Clifton Park & Half-moon Read! All residents of our Clifton Park and Halfmoon Library community are again invited to take a moment to nominate their favorite books by going to our website, http://www.twotownsonebook.org, or by using ballots avail-able at the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library. Individuals may nominate up to three different books. Once the com-munity nominates their favorite books, the Two Towns - One Book Selection Committee will choose five of the nominated books for a final public vote to determine THE BOOK. When nominating a book, please consider: • THE BOOK should be of interest to both men and women • THE BOOK should be of interest to many different ages, from teens to seniors • THE BOOK should lend itself to a variety of events and programs. • THE BOOK should spark thought-ful discussion. Both fiction and non-fiction books can be nominated. Nominations will close on Saturday, June 14, 2014 . For additional in-formation, please call the Li-brary at 371-8622.

COME JOIN US IN GREENWICH JUNE 13 AND 14 FOR

THE WHIPPLE CITY FESTIVALGREENWICH - This year, the Whipple City Festival will once again feature living history demonstrations in Dorr Park. On Saturday June 14th there will be four regiments reenacting four different periods in history. The 2nd Continental Artillery Regiment is a group of re-enactors from the Revolutionary War. Cannon will be on display as well as firearms from that period. Musket firings will take place at different times during the day and several campsites will be set for display with re-enactors in period dress. The 125th NY Regiment Association will be representing the Civil War period. This living history group represents a typical military campsite of 1861 and is chartered with the NYS Education Department. Tents and campsites will be set up. This group will have musket firings during the festival and wooden muskets will be available for children to help the re-enactors do musket drills. The 99th In-fantry Division will be representing World War II. A field table, 4-5 puptents, an ammo box as well as WWII weapons will be on display. This year we are also adding WWI to our group of reenactors. They will have a table with memorabilia from that era. Also in Dorr Park will be The Greenwich Town Histo-rian and the Willard Mountain DAR and the Washington Co. Historical Society with information booths and items for sale. The park is still open to having other historical organizations set up info booths. Contact the chamber at [email protected]. CALLING ALL MENTORS!CAPITAL DISTRICT - I am I can is a 501(c)3 organization that was created to mentor girls in grades 9 - 12. Programs pro-vide needed encouragement, guidance and advocacy to students as they navigate their high school years and move toward post-graduation goals. We are seeking adult female mentors to work with students on a weekly basis. As a men-tor you would spend time with and get to know your student, while developing a relationship that provides support and guidance. If you are looking for some meaningful volunteer work, this may be for you. This program focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on providing a positive role model in the student’s life. You will help the student to de-velop core values and “encourage young women to discover their dreams, to believe in endless possibilities while empow-ering them to make it happen”. The organization is currently looking for mentors in the Clifton Park to Glens Falls areas. Immediate needs are to support girls in Hudson Falls, South Glens Fall, Glens Falls, Shenendehowa, and Ballston Spa school districts. If you have time on a weekly or bi-weekly ba-sis and would like to have a positive impact on a girl in your community, please contact Founder, Avon Scherff at 518-688-3010 ext 102, or email Avon@scherffi nsurance.com.

Our mentoring re-lationships are proven to be a positive infl uence on the life of a child. Currently, we serve over 500 children, but there are over 100 more waiting for mentors. If you want to learn more about volunteering, contact Brigette Callahan at 862-1250 x15, or by email at [email protected].

SARATOGA COUNTY KIDS CARE CLUB 2014 SUMMER FOOD DRIVE

SERVICE PROJECT CAPITAL DISTRICT - Club members are collect-ing non-perishable food items that will be do-nated to the Franklin Community Center and the Mechanicville Community Center to help feed kids that are out of school and will not be receiving free or reduced breakfast and lunch during the summer. Drop-off sites include:

Toyota of Clifton Park -202 Route 146, Mechanicville,NY 12118 - Torres XTF Health and Fitness - 43 Round Lake Road, Ballston Lake, NY 12019. The fi nal school bell of the year will

ring before we know it, and children will leave their schools for the summer. But for many kids who depend on free or reduced-priced school lunches, they could be without a source for nu-tritious meals. The Saratoga County Kids Care Club wants to help and so can you! All non-PERISHABLE FOOD do-nations will be delivered to the franklin and Mechan-icville community centers. Thank you for all your help! RECENTLY RETIRED AND LOOKING FOR MEANINGFUL

VOLUNTEER WORK?SARATOGA REGION - I am I can is a 501(c)3 organization that was created to mentor girls in grades 9 - 12. Programs pro-vide needed encouragement, guidance and advocacy to students as they navigate their high school years and move toward post-graduation goals. We are seeking adult female

mentors to work with stu-dents on a weekly basis. As a mentor you would spend time with and get to know your student, while develop-ing a relationship that pro-vides support and guidance. If you are a recently retired woman looking for some meaningful volunteer work, this may be for you. This pro-gram focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on providing a posi-tive role model in the stu-dent’s life. You will help the student to develop core val-ues and “encourage young women to discover their dreams, to believe in endless possibilities while empower-ing them to make it happen”. The organization is currently looking for mentors in the Clifton Park to Glens Falls areas. Immediate needs are to support girls in Hudson Falls, South Glens Fall, Glens Falls and Ballston Spa school districts. If you have time on a weekly or bi-weekly basis and would like to have a pos-itive impact on a girl in your community, please contact Founder, Avon Scherff at 518-688-3010 ext 102, or email [email protected].
