Relay For Life Team Captain MeetingCLIFTON PARK – 2012 Relay For Life Team Captain meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 7, 6:30pm at Orenda Elementary Music Room. Relay For Life 2012, themed this year “Dancing thru Decades”. Teams are needed that will walk at the Relay For Life Event on Friday, June 8-9, to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Area Food Pantry Needs Your HelpSTILLWATER – The Stillwater Area Food Pantry needs your help to restock their shelves. They are currently facing shortages in many of their staple products. The most needed food items are crackers, soup, canned fruit, jelly and canned meats and meals. Spaghetti and Meatball Dinner CLIFTON PARK – Boy Scout Troop 45 is hosting an all-you-can-eat Spa-ghetti and Meatball Dinner from 5-7:30pm on Saturday, March 10 at the Shenendehowa United Methodist Church in Clifton Park. The church is lo-cated on Route 146 (2 mi. west of I87-Northway, Exit 9) directly across from the entrance to the Shenendehowa School District Campus. Menu includes spaghetti, meatballs, salad, bread, dessert, and beverage. No reservations are required. Take-out is available. Cost is $8 for Adults; $7 for seniors and chil-dren ages 4-10; children 3 and under are free; and there is a maximum fam-ily cost of $25. Arts Council Exhibition CLIFTON PARK – A Saratoga County Arts Council “Art in Public Places” Exhibition is on display in the 2nd fl oor Gallery at the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library, for the month of March 2012. 1814 Execution of Soldier in Greenbush, NY Was WrongCAPITAL REGION – I came upon this local history story by chance. A soldier (un-named) was executed for desertion at Cantonment, Greenbush (now the grounds of Red Mill School) in 1814 during the War of 1812. I have a copy of an offi cer’s (also un-named) written witness account of the execution. It is very clear from this account the charge of desertion was wrong and, hence, the execution was wrong. I am now trying to locate records of this court martial and execution in an attempt to right this wrong and clear this man’s name of desertion. I am making progress in establishing some identities with the help of local historians. If anyone can help with information or suggestions, I would be most appreciative. BFT Collecting Books AgainCAPITAL REGION – Starting March 1, Books For Troops will once again be collecting books after a 2-1/2 month break. Dur-ing the break, they sorted, packed and mailed out books from the huge stockpile they had acquired. BFT can no longer accept hardcover books, only paperbacks in excellent condition, ask-ing for classics, biographies, true stories, history and histori-cal fi ction, sci-fi and DVDs. Drop-off locations continue at the Clifton Park and Halfmoon Town Halls, Red Robin Restaurants in Latham and Clifton Park, Kings Glass in Saratoga, Saratoga County DMV offi ces in Ballston Spa and Wilton, Troy City Hall, and Business Products in Clifton Park. (NOTE: The fol-lowing drop-off locations have been eliminated: West Crescent Fire Dept. and the Saratoga County DMV offi ce in Clifton Park.) BFT still needs monetary assistance with mailing the books overseas and asks for donations of $12.50 through their “Adopt a Box of Books” program. Firefi ghters HonoredJONESVILLE – On Sunday morning, August 28, 2011, Hur-ricane Irene passed through Saratoga County and the Jonesville Fire Department responded to an alarm for a structure fi re at 2 Tipperary Way. This alarm would be the sixth of 42 alarms the department would respond to that day. Recently, four fi refi ght-ers were honored at the Jonesville Fire Department Installa-tion Banquet for their heroic actions that day in rescuing a fellow fi refi ghter. Lieutenant Anthony Simmons and Firefi ghter Donald Horan were presented with a medal of merit for their exceptional performance in assisting in the rescue of a fellow fi refi ghter. The Jonesville Fire District presented the Medal of Valor to Captain Kyle Wheeler and Engineer Craig Lewis for their heroic efforts in the rescue of a fellow fi refi ghter. US Con-gressman Chris Gibson was in attendance at the banquet and he presented all four fi refi ghters with a Congressional Letter of Recognition for their actions at the fi re. (P)

Unique Black History Month Exhibit and Program STILLWATER – Throughout February, Saratoga National Historical Park, located between Rt. 4 and Rt. 32 just north of the Village of Stillwater, will offer a free highlight exhibit on Agrippa Hull, a black soldier who fought in the Battle of Saratoga. This special exhibit focuses on Agrippa Hull, a black soldier who fought in the Battle of Saratoga. Hull, who was a slave in early life, fought in the American Revolution and even-tually became a very successful businessman. Historical docu-mentation on his life and family gives us a unique look into an ordinary soldier and extraordinary man. Children’s Room at Library Now Has iPadsCLIFTON PARK – The Clifton Park Halfmoon Public Library has announced that the Children’s Library now has six iPads for use within the children’s room. Parents or adult caregivers with a Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library tax district library card can borrow an iPad to use with their child within the children’s room. The adult must have photo ID and a library card with an account in good standing in order to use an iPad. These iPads are preloaded with age-appropriate apps that support literacy development. The iPad program is an extension of the library’s current desktop computers for children and will provide mobil-ity, less wait time, and exposure to touch technology. As part of its mission to support local families with early literacy and computer skills efforts, the library is happy to be able to offer this new service to families.
