Hudson River Steam- boat Catastrophes: Contests and Collisions. Sunday, January 26, 2014 - 2:00 pm. William K. Sanford (Colonie) Town Library, 629 Albany Shaker Road. Beginning in the mid-1800s, steamboats carried people between New York City and the Albany area on the Hudson River. Romantic images lull us into believing it was a quiet means of travel, but a crowded river, faulty equipment and the bravado of the captains resulted in at least one major catastrophe every year. Night boats collided and sank, carelessness caused boiler explosions, races put passengers at risk and fires would quickly swallow the wooden vessels. The grand Empire of Troy suffered many collisions. The Swallow broke in two on a rock, Reindeer’s explosion took forty lives at once and the Oregon and C. Vanderbilt entered into an epic and dangerous race. Collected from eyewitness accounts, these are some of the most exciting and frightening stories of peril aboard steam- boats on the Hudson River. CDTA TEAMS UP WITH

UNDERGROUND RAILROAD HISTORY PROJECT

RENSSELAER - CDTA, manag-er of the Rensselaer Amtrak Train Station, has teamed up with Underground Railroad History Project of the Capi-tal Region in order to bring local Underground Railroad history to the public. Locat-ed in the main concourse of the Rensselaer Train Station, a seven foot tall, three sided kiosk contains information and visual images of people, places and events related to this signifi cant chapter in the history of Albany, the Capital Region, and New York State. Based upon the research conducted by Paul and Mary Liz Stewart, historians and co-founders of Underground Railroad History Project of the Capital Region, Inc., Al-bany and the Capital Region were hotbeds of abolitionist activity prior to the Civil War. According to Paul Stewart, “Letters, narratives, newspa-per articles, and broadsides tell us a much more complex and comprehensive story of Underground Railroad activity than we routinely hear about. They provide us with a new interpretation of a very old story.” The Rens-selaer Amtrak Train Station will host the kiosk through February 2014.

Programs provide needed encouragement, guidance and advocacy to students as they navi-gate their high school years and move toward post-graduation goals. As a mentor you would spend time with and get to know your student, while developing a relationship that provides support and guidance. This program focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on providing a positive role model in the student’s life. You will help the stu-dent to develop core val-ues and “encourage young women to discover their dreams, to believe in end-less possibilities while em-powering them to make it happen”. HELP KEEP A VOLUNTEER WARM THIS

WINTERCAPITAL DISTRICT - The USS SLATER has launched their 15th Annual Winter Fund Drive. It’s time to “help keep a volunteer warm this winter.” According to Chairman Bart-ley “BJ” Costello, “The Winter Fund Drive was conceived back in 1998. After the first season of public visitation, we realized that we did not have enough cash to get us through the winter. When we closed for the season, our in-come stream ceased, but our expenses continued. It was a case of making lemonade out of lemons. We reached out to our members and asked them each to donate $100 to help get us through the winter. The response was overwhelm-ing. Their donations got us through that first winter and then some. We’ve continued the drive every year since.” The appeal enables the volun-teers to keep working on USS SLATER’s restoration through-out the winter months. It has become an important part of the Museum’s operating fund. USS SLATER is supported by a network of 3,000 members in all 50 states, including Navy veterans, their families, and history-minded friends. In 2013 the only public funding the Museum received was a $1000 City of Albany Arts Grant to support public pro-gramming. Private donations provide half of the Museum’s operating budget. The efforts of the SLATER’s volunteers were rewarded in 2012 when the ship was designated a Na-tional Historic Landmark and in 2013 the Museum received a New York State preserva-tion award. Volunteers donate an average of 16,000 hours a year to the project. Winter Fund donors are welcome at any level. Visit the website at www.ussslater.org for more information. Museum mem-berships begin at $25. Mem-bers receive the Museum’s quarterly newsletter “Trim But Deadly,” which features his-toric articles, photos and up-dates on the volunteer’s prog-ress, as well as free admission to the ship. Donations may be mailed to USS SLATER, P.O. Box 1926, Albany, NY 12201.

DID YOU KNOW?

A review published in a 2010 issue of the medical journal Pediatrics found that children benefi ted from weight training. In the review, researchers from the Institute of Train-ing Science and Sports In-formatics in Cologne, Ger-many, analyzed studies that focused on children and weightlifting. The re-view looked at studies go-ing as far back as 60 years, fi nding that children and adolescents who lifted weights grew stronger. Those who participated in strength training twice per week gained more strength than those who participated just once per week. These fi ndings contradict a longstand-ing belief that children do not actually get stronger. But while children and adolescents may be get-ting stronger, researchers found that they do not add as much bulk or obvi-ous muscle mass as adults. Instead, researchers feel the strength changes in children and adolescents stem more from neu-rological changes that make their nervous sys-tems and muscles interact more effi ciently. Though

DID YOU KNOW?Cyclists may soon rethink their helmet choices. Anna Haupt and Terese Alstin, two post-graduate students at the University of Lund in Sweden, designed an invisible helmet that is actually an air bag cyclists can wear around their necks. Named the “Ho-evdig,” the protective gear employs sensors to detect sudden jolts. When such jolts are detected, the sensors trigger a helium gas cylinder to infl ate the helmet and prevent injury. Accord-

ing to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, cyclists ac-count for 2 percent of motor ve-hicle crash deaths in the United States, and 72 percent of those fatalities are adults over the age of 20. Helmets can signifi cantly reduce head injuries and death, but many adults do not like wearing the standard helmets made of styrofoam and plastic, feeling such helmets are cum-bersome. The Hoevdig is poised to change how cyclists view hel-mets, but it may take some time for the helmet to catch on in North America. So far it is avail-able only in Europe and would have to meet requirements established by the Consumer Product Safety Commission to be sold in the United States.

parents have long wor-ried that strength training will stunt their children’s growth, researchers now feel that properly super-vised strength training will

not stunt growth or lead to growth-plate injuries and will perhaps even reduce their risk of injury as op-posed to increasing that risk.

Finding a new job is never an easy task. That task grew even more diffi cult over the last half decade, when a struggling economy forced many companies to lay off workers and institute hiring freezes. As a result, unem-ployment numbers rose, and many out-of-work men and women found themselves searching for ways to stand out among a crowded pool of applicants.

Standing out in a crowded job market has always been tough, but many profession-als fi nd it even more diffi cult to get noticed now, when many companies request prospective employees ap-ply for job postings via the Internet. That process can

HOW TO GET NOTICED IN A CROWDED JOB MARKETbe frustrating, as even the most qualifi ed applicants can easily get lost among the myriad of workers all ap-plying for the same position. But as daunting as fi nding a new job may seem to those looking for work, there are ways to stand out among the masses.

* Go the extra mile when sending your application. Many online job postings provide a link or an email address where applicants can fi ll out an application or send their resumes. This is a necessary step, and ap-plicants should follow the directions in the posting. But applicants who really want to get noticed can take the extra step of fi nding the contact information for the company’s hiring manager and sending their resume di-rectly to that person’s email address. Include the title of the position you’re applying for in the subject line of your email, and cut and paste your cover letter into the body of the email. In addi-tion to sending your email to the company’s hiring man-

ager, consider CC’ing the person who might be your boss if you were to get the position.

* Tighten things up. Your resume should refl ect your work experience, but you want to focus primarily on the experience and skills that are relevant to the posi-tion. You can list past posi-tions or internships you’ve had, but keep the synopsis of those positions brief if they bear little relevance to the position for which you’re applying. The main focus of your resume should be the things you have done in the past that make you the best candidate for this job. This might change as you apply for various positions, but tailor each resume to each specifi c position.

* Make your resume down-load-friendly. Applying for positions but getting little response despite your qualifi cations? Chances are your resume might not be download-friendly. Bullet points and boxes might look good to you, but if the hir-ing manager on the receiv-

ing end of your resume does not have the same version of the program you’re us-ing, that resume might look like a scrambled mess by the time the it’s downloaded. In such instances your resume is almost certain to end up in the scrap heap, no mat-ter how qualifi ed you might be. When uploading your resume to a company Web site or emailing it to a hiring manager, choose a format they can easily download. A PDF, for example, is a format that’s easy to download and unlikely to scramble.

* Beware of hyperlinks. Add-ing hyperlinks to a resume can be hit or miss. When it’s a hit, a hiring manager can click on a link in your re-sume and be taken directly to samples of your work. However, if you’re asked to submit your resume via an online application instead of sending it directly to a hir-ing manager’s email address, then those same hyperlinks might be relegating your application to the trash bin before it’s ever seen. That’s because the database may

be programmed to associ-ate any documents with hy-perlinks as spam, in which case the hiring manager will never see your application or resume. Hyperlinks can be useful and help you stand out, but only when they’re employed under the right circumstances.

* Include social media pro-fi les. More and more com-panies want employees who are familiar with social media, which can work to an applicants’ advantage or prove detrimental. If you have been responsible re-garding your use of social media, conducting yourself in a professional matter and even benefi tting your exist-ing employer, by all means share these profi les with potential employers. But if you have traditionally used social media purely as a so-cial tool and not in a profes-sional manner, then it bears little relevance to your job search and likely won’t help you stand out for the right reasons.

*Surface Conditions. Roads and drive paths are likely to be covered with rain, sleet, snow and ice, which causes slippery driving conditions and reduces tire traction. Consider using snow tires in areas where winter weather is severe. It’s also important to inspect your tires for uneven wear, cupping and proper tread depth. Also consider the last time you had the tires rotated, balanced and aligned.

*Emergency Situations. Winter weather increases the chance of getting into a car accident. Pack an emergency kit to leave in your vehicle at all times. Consider including safety items such as fl ares, medical supplies, jumper cables, a fl ash light, batteries, a small shovel and tire chains. Also consider comfort items like blankets, gloves and snacks.

*Clear Vision. Snow, ice and fog diminish your visibility, creating dangerous driving conditions. Re-move all debris from your windshield, windows and outside mirrors before driving. Replace your wiper blades with extreme-weather blades for a stronger wipe to battle heavy rain, snow and ice buildup. The TRICO Ice wiper blade (www.tricoproducts.com) is designed to distribute even pressure for a clearer wipe, while the contour complements new vehicle models and maximizes your line of sight.

*Vehicle Performance. Follow the recommended maintenance schedule in your vehicle’s owner’s manual to avoid hard starts, stalling and lost power during colder weather. Keep your gas tank above the halfway mark because empty tanks collect condensation, which damages the engine. Some re-gions experience heavy snow and dangerous ice storms, others fi nd an increase in rainy conditions, and in some places, temperatures may just cool down a bit. Regardless of location, the winter season brings a climate change that all drivers should consider.
