6. IGNOU, Delhi has started a 6-months certificate course in Disaster Management. You are
Deepika/Deepak, the head of Disaster Management Cell of SDS Public School, Bangalore.
Write a letter to the Vice-Chancellor IGNOU enquiring about fees structure, criteria of
admission etc. as you want your colleagues to join it.
7. You are Yasmeen/ Yash a resident of R-6, Mangolpuri, Delhi. There are many uncovered
manholes in your locality which are a constant cause of fatal accidents. Write a letter to the
Commissioner, Sewage Disposal Board of Delhi, complaining about the problem and
requesting him for an early solution.
8. Write a letter to the Editor of a national daily, about water scarcity in your locality and
suggesting ways to improve the supply of water in your area.You are Raman/Reena of
Ghaziabad.
9. Write a Factual Description of a tourist spot you recently visited, in about 125 words.
10. You are Poorva / Partha, Cultural Secretary of D.B. Senior Secondary School, Mumbai. A
week-long Music and Dance festival was organised by your school. Write a report in about
125 words for your school magazine.
11. “To use the latest technology the right way, is in the hands of the youth today”. Write a
speech in 150-200 words discouraging the misuse of technological products like cell phones,
computers etc. and highlighting the need to use them to promote harmony and goodwill in the
society.

Attempt these questions in your class register.
1. Find probability distribution and mean of the number of doublets in three throws of a
pair of dice.
2. A card from a pack of 52 cards is lost. From the remaining cards of the pack, two cards
are drawn at random and are found to be both clubs. Find the probability of the lost card
being a club.
3 A box manufacturer makes large and small boxes from a large piece of cardboard. The
large boxes require 4 sqm per box while the small boxes require 3 sqm per box. The
manufacturer is required to make atleast 3 large boxes and atmost twice as many small
boxes as large boxes. If 60 sqm of cardboard is in stock and if the profits on the large
and small boxes are 3 and 2 respectively, how many of each should be made in order
to maximise the total profit? Formulate the above L.P.P. mathematically and then solve
it graphically. What is the importance of cottage industry in India?
4. Find the probability distribution of the number of green balls drawn when three balls are
drawn without replacement from a bag containing 3 green and 5 white balls.
5. A box contains 5 gold and 4 silver coins, two coins are stolen from the box. Now one
coin is drawn at random from the box and is found to be of gold. Find the probability
that the lost coins were also of gold.
6. A cottage industry manufactures pedestal lamps and wooden shades each requiring the
use of grinding/cutting machine and a sprayer. It takes 2 hours on the grinding/cutting
machine and 3 hours on the sprayer to manufacture a pedestal lamp. It takes 1 hour on
the grinding/cutting machine and 2 hours on the sprayer to manufacture a shade. On any
day, the sprayer is available for at the most 20 hours and the grinding/cutting machine
for at the most 12 hours. The profit from the sale of a lamp is 5 and that from a shade is

7. A manufacturer produces pizza and cakes. It takes 1 hour of work on machine A and 3
hours on machine B to produce a packet of pizza. It takes 3 hours on machine A and 1
hour on machine B to produce a packet of cakes. He earns a profit of 17.50 per
packet on pizza and 7 per packet of cake. How many packets of each should be
produced each day so as to maximize his profits if he operates his machines for at the
most 12 hours a day? Form the above as a linear programming problem and solve it
graphically. Why pizza and cakes are not good for health?
8. On a multiple choice examination with three possible answers (out of which only one is
correct) for each of the five questions, what is the probability that a candidate would get
four or more correct answers just by guessing?
9. An experiment succeeds twice as often as it fails. Find the probability that in the next six
trails, there will be at least 4 successes.
10. In a competitive examination, an examinee either guesses or copies or knows the answer
to a multiple choice question with four choices. The probability that he makes a guess is

Q1. Two thin concentric and coplanar spherical shells, of radii a and b (a<b) carry

Q2. A glass lens of refractive index 1.5 is placed in a liquid. What must be the refractive
index of the liquid so that the lens disappears?
Q3. Two identical plane metallic surfaces A and B are kept parallel to each other in air separated
by a distance of 1.0 cm as shown. Surface A is given a positive potential of 10V and the
outer surface of B is earthed. (i) What is the magnitude and direction of the uniform
electric field between points Y and Z? (ii) What is the work done in moving a charge of
20C from point X to point Y?
Q4. Two capacitors with capacity C1 and C2 are charged to potential V1 and V2
respectively and then connected in parallel. Calculate the common potential across the
combination, the charge on each capacitor, the electrostatic energy stored in the system
and the change in the electrostatic energy from its initial value.
Q5 A biconvex lens of focal length 20cm is placed coaxially with a convex mirror of radius of
curvature 20cm. The two are kept at 15cm from each other. A point object lies 40cm in
front of the convex lens. Draw a ray diagram to show the formation of the image by this
combination. Determine the nature and the position of the image formed.
Q6. Two opposite corners of a square carry charge Q each and the other two opposite
corners carry charge q each. If the resultant force on Q is zero, how are Q and q related.
Q7. A convex lens of focal length 10cm is placed coaxially 5cm away from a concave lens of
focal length 10cm. If an object is placed 30cm in front of the convex lens, find the
position of the final image formed by the combination.
Q8. An electrical technician requires a capacitance of 2µF in a circuit across a potential
difference of 1KV. A large number of 1µF capacitors are available to him each of
which can withstand a potential difference of not more than 400V. Suggest a possible
arrangement that requires a minimum number of capacitors.

(b) A dipole is placed in a uniform electric field of intensity 104
NC-1.
