happened to Mona in the series? Hanna’s sup-posed best friend just disappeared from the entire television show while in the books, she is present through every moment constantly pestering Hannah about her loyalties.

Even L.J. Smith’s Vampire Diaries series seems unable to es-cape the fate of every novel put to screen. Fans of the books scream over the huge differences between

plot points; some as simple as being the main character. Many of the characters have been

changed and minor plotlines as well; at the end of the first season a character was completely writ-ten out and a new one was, you guessed

it, written in. Many websites report that the main plot line has been maintained through the shows first two seasons; this caused two kinds of fans to occur—the book fans & the show fans.

The book fans are those who will critique the television show until they become so fed up; they give up on it completely. They will be-come enraged when there are major plot changes or a new character is introduced. When the show begins, they all will watch with anticipation while consoling their own disappointment that in retrospect, the series may never become a motion picture, but they still yearn to see the characters and (cont on page 4)

Clocks around the world rang midnight on June 8, 2010 and thousands of girls finally let out breaths of anticipation. I, myself, flocked to my closest reliant book store, pupils searching for the yellow colored book and doll like child. Growing nervous they were sold out, I found myself practically begging for the location of the new novel. Fast forward a minute and a half to reveal the last copy the store had in my hand. And then to only make success sweeter; two girls entered after me searching for the same novel. I hid while stealthy making my way to the regis-ter. I paid and then I read for the next twenty hours straight. I and the rest of the world were finally going to find out who the real real ‘A’ was in the finale of the book series Pretty little Liars.

For the past couple of years, popular teen novels have been making it huge-not only in sales, but in fans. Popular series such as Pretty Little Liars, Gossip Girl & Vampire Diaries were highly popular before being adapted onto channels like

the CW and ABC family. While all of these series are highly successful, many worry that the books may not be fol-lowing the books original storyline.

When Cecily von Ziegesar, author of the Gossip Girl series, was first ap-proached for a television deal; she ad-mits to being hesitant. While the CW has kept the major plot points alive as first seen in the pilot episode, minor changes have occurred to keep viewers interested in order to move past the ‘slower’ chapters of the works. On Pretty Little Liars, there have recently been several changes that fans have been taking notice of such as the intro-duction of the brand new, bad-boy Caleb. Caleb was never in the series and created purely for good television. While his character has brought the young actor, Taylor Blackburn, a ca-reer, his plot line only helps the show lose it’s credibility to the books with each passing week. The same goes for the attractive plot line known as the Ezra Fitz & Aria relationship which took place for a majority of book one and two, but never escalated to what the relationship has become in the tele-vision series. Even the new Spencer and Toby love-plot has become out of control. Or can I say, does not even exist? In the novels, these relationships never even became anything at all—Toby dies right after the big dance in an act of suicide. And while we’re on the topic, why is Ezra Fitz even still around? Where did Alex go? What

plot lines come to life before their pupils. These fans get the chance to re-experience the thrills and can relax know-ing that they know the ending.

And then there are the television fans who are pleased there is something new for them to watch on a Tuesday night. These fans are not bad; but they become the people who fall for the new plots and characters, and get to hungrily await each passing week, attempting to figure out the end-ing for themselves. They are the ones that when book fans reveal what really has to happen, become shocked and sur-prised and question, ‘While why didn’t they do that?!’

Well that is a good question isn’t it? And the answer is; good television. If fans were to direct how a television se-ries or even a movie was produced; the show or film would be four hours in length (not like fans would mind it) and let’s face it, boring and expensive.

Every reader can admit that at one time in their midst, they probably merely skimmed that long descriptive paragraph and moved onto the dialogue. Too much attention to detail can be, a total drag. Also; time is money. To create these

exact replicas would cost more than triple a company has for it’s budget.

Also. Think of it this way. If the shows and films were exact duplicates of the novels; who would go read them af-terwards? Many people pur-posely either get the book before it comes to Holly-wood, or afterwards—for the purpose of comparing the two and determine which is bet-ter. And then there are also those who are impatient and don’t want to wait four sea-sons before finding out who ‘A’ is in Pretty Little Liars.

Book sales would plummet, hurting the authors income and the already rapidly de-

cline of love for literature who drop below Bikini Bot-tom. And that is pretty deep. While we may hate that the plot has been changed, per-haps the producer is doing us a favor.

So is it enough for you? Can you accept the fact that what you’re watching is only, kind of true? You’ll get the main plot but if you want the full, true experience of how the author envisioned it-teens are going to need to start hitting the library. Which may not necessarily be a bad thing. Whip out your library cards girls, it’s time to get reading so you know the truth.

point on, The Harry Potter series had become a part of her life. To this day, ten years later, the sixteen year old girl anxiously awaits the release of the last of the Harry Potter movies, having read the whole series multiple times and having made more and more connections with each time.

In JK Rowling’s first novel, readers are taken into an en-tirely different world. From the time young Harry Potter first receives his acceptance letter to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry readers find magic around every corner. From giant men, to a three headed beast,

The year was 2001, and the six year old girl was anxious to go to the movie theatre later in the evening. Keen though she was to see the movie, reading had recently become a hobby of hers after having learned how to read in school. Therefore, it was no surprise that while she awaited her departure for the movie, she picked up off her living room table, the very book upon which the movie she was scheduled to see was based. She was a novice reader, a first grader, but that did not stop her from recog-nizing the book for what it was within the first few chap-ters; a masterpiece. From that

and a sport played on flying broomsticks, Rowling con-stantly keeps readers antici-pant and excited. The charac-ters are all much more devel-oped than the average writer would think to make them and each one is significant to the story. There are no in-stances in which the reader will find themselves thinking that was just a filler so the book could be longer. Everything is relevant. JK Rowling’s in-tense and unbound creativity is translated beautifully in Harry Potter and the Sor-cerer’s Stone, the first of seven epic and groundbreak-ing novels in the series.

We all know that piracy is illegal and that authorities are on the hunt for people who download torrents off of the internet. It is the same thing as shoplifting, and in some cases, people could face charges of grand larceny if their computer hard drive was ever confiscated by the police. People claim that buying albums or individual songs can often become expensive, and that it is just easier to download things with-out regard for the artist. But what about the artists? Let’s see what they have to say about illegal downloading.

Lady Gaga’s views on the issue are that it’s really not a big deal. “You know how much you can earn off touring, right? Big artists can make anywhere from $40 million for one cycle of two years' touring. Giant artists make upwards of $100 million. Make music -- then tour. It's just the way it is today.” (www.instantfundas.com)

What’s more is that even former Beatle Paul McCartney doesn’t mind illegal downloading, then again, with all the money he has, why should he?

Of course, not every artist is happy about their music being stolen. In 2000, metal band Metallica filed a law suit against Napster, claiming that they encourage and condone illegal downloading. “We take our craft -- whether it be the music, the lyrics, or the photos and artwork -- very seriously, as do most artists. It is therefore sickening to know that our art is being traded like a commodity rather than the art that it is,” said drummer Lars Ulrich. (www.wired.com)

It’s of course a very controversial issue. On one hand, artists are losing money that they could be using to pay the people that help promote them in the first place. On another hand, artists claim that the real money is in touring and live performances. Opinions vary from artist to artist, but one thing is for certain, and that is the fact that piracy is morally wrong and illegal, and people will always be prosecuted for it.

Sparks went flying on March 5th at Kellenberg Memorial High School as the drama club per-formed Reginald Rose’s Twelve Angry Men; the story about the twelve jurors who are bound to a small room and must make a unanimous deci-sion which could cost a young man his life. A boy is convicted of murdering his father and unless these twelve men can find an reason to how he

might not have commited such a crime, the boy will be sent straight to the electric chair.

Paul Clores, a senior at Kellenberg played his role as the Foreman well, keeping the room calm and moving along the events of the day. The audience was captured by Brendan Gaffey’s portrayal of Juror #8, the lone juror who proclaimed ‘not guilty’ from the very beginning and continued to explain his reasoning behind it for the next two hours. The story moved along as Gaffey continued to explain he “reasonable doubt” eminent in his mind and with each passing juror being swayed; Juror #3 (Brendan Goggins) and Juror #10 (Matthew O’Brien) grew more furious. O’Brien went on a rage of hatred about his beliefs on the matter, causing the jurors to all turn from him until Joseph Mi-nasi as Juror #4 proclaimed,

“We’ve heard enough. Now sit down and don’t open your filthy mouth again.” The applause filled the audito-rium in reaction to O’Brien’s spec-tacular performance and the one juror who took a stand. But the finale of Goggin’s monologue where his refusal to let the boy live was due to his own grudge towards his own son shook the room, leaving an eerie silence until Gaffey spoke, “He’s not your boy. Let him live.”

Director Denis Murphy, wonderfully adapted this famous play onto the stage for one night of madness testing your morals and your thoughts, do you believe the boy should have walked free? Did they make the right choice? It’s all up to you and your mind could not help but wander as you exited the room for the drive home.

nanced their very first re-cording session. Following that, they then signed with Warner Bros in 1978; a few of their songs are “Runnin with the Devil,” “I’m the one,” and the in-sane guitar solo called “Eruption.” The next few years, the band became the hardest working and most profitable band in the re-cording industry.

During this time, tension began to grow between Roth and the other band mates. In 1985, after re-cording his own successful solo album, Roth exited the band to be replaced by for-mer Montrose front-man, Sammy Hagar. Showing an insane resiliency, the for-

Before Eddie became a guitarist, him and his brother Alex, took classical piano les-sons in there childhood home in Pasadena, California. Soon af-ter, Eddie then switched to gui-tar and Alex went right to the drums and they both took the time in creating the band Mam-moth.

In 1974, they got in contact with professional vocalist David Lee Roth, and then con-tacted Michael Anthony, a bass-ist, to finally create a band that we all no to this day called VAN HALEN. Gene Simmons, who is currently the bassist of another band named “Kiss”, discovered the wannabes in 1977 in a local club and fi-

mer band, continued to quickly produce several unbe-lievably successful and world wide popular albums in-cluding 1986's 5150 and 1991's “For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge”. In 1993, the band released its first double-live album, Van Halen Live: Right Here, Right Now.

A few years past and tensions grew even stronger. Hagar released his last Van Halen record, Balance, in 1995. Shortly after, when Hagar finally, departured from the band, Roth returned for a much-publicized Van Halen reunion. But, after recording two songs for a greatest hits album and making an appearance with the band at the MTV Music Awards, Roth left again. You would think three strikes you’re out but no. This time, he was replaced by Gary Cherone, formerly a member of the heavy metal band “Extreme”. Cherone's debut with the band, Van Halen III, was released in 1998, but after slow sales he made his departure. Eddie Van Halen mar-ried actress Valerie Bertinelli in 1981, and their son, Wolfgang, was born in 1990. The couple announced their separation in July 2002. In 2009, Van Halen mar-ried girlfriend of three years, Janie Liszewski.

On an-other hand, artists claim that the real money is in touring and live per-formances. People everywhere are finding themselves facing law suits, many of whom didn’t even know the practice was illegal.

12 year old Brianna LaHara of New York was sued for illegally downloading music. She and her mother, exasperatedly explained that they paid a monthly service fee for the downloading software, and fig-ured that it could not be illegal if they were paying for it. LaHara, an honors student and a normal girl could face charges of up to $150,000 per song.

To avoid prosecution here are some tips for the average internet user:

1. If you aren’t paying for the song, and you are using software such as Lime wire, Napster, or Bit Torrent, you are practicing piracy which is

illegal.

2. If a friend burns you a CD of songs they paid for, you are not

breaking the law.

“IT WAS THE BEST ‘OPEN MIC NIGHT’ FRAGMENTS HAS EVER PRODUCED.” - MICHEAL HARRINGTON, PRINCIPAL OF MEPHAM HIGH SCHOOL

The cafeteria had been trans-formed into a surreal under-water vision. Succulent cup-cakes, pastries and cookies were spread out on a three table long platter and for ef-fect; bowls of goldfish on every table. A lone micro-phone and piano were placed on the stage awaiting it’s performers who they would assist for the next two and a half hours.

Fragments, the literary club, hosted it’s eleventh Open Mic Night on Thursday

March 3rd and has been talked about as the best ‘Open Mic’ yet. Fabulous performances included Dr. Katz’s song ‘Let Me Be Your Wings’, which he ended up singing to Fragments Advi-sor, Mrs. Maresca and Mrs. Parlegreco’s rendition of the poem ‘The Great Explosion’ which then resulted in her blowing up three balloons—one filled with oxygen and two with hydrogen.

But the night did have a som-ber tone to it with seniors Jen

Owens, Greg Schwartz and Adam Koehler’s performance of “Let Angels Lead You In” in fond memory of Erin Malloy-McArdle who passed away in January.

The night was a spectacular event filled with tons of tal-ent, even some comedy per-formed by James Fraser and Teresa Winger.

It was truly an event to be remembered.

book, he turns into a full out beast which would have made the film cliché if the change had not been made. Lindy, a sup-posed to be red head with crooked teeth, becomes the beautiful Vanessa Hudgens. Despite the changes the film revolves around the tale of Beauty & the Beast and watching Kyle’s pain helps make the audi-ence cheer once Lindy begins to return feelings. Neil Patrick Harris makes a mi-raculous performance as ‘Will’ the blind-tutor hired for Kyle and his presence in the film nearly makes the entire movie; whether it be his facial expressions, quick witted one-liners or his ability to feel em-

pathy for someone he can not see.

The original ending of the beast being harmed and then rescued by Lindy was changed to Lindy realizing her love for Kyle and running off to find him only to instead come face to face with the newly transformed Kyle after she had whis-pered to him, “I love you”. A truly sappy ‘and they all lived happily ever after’ ending for this film which remained to original roots.

The controversy ensued with Miley starting with the “Vanity Fair” cover, which showed his daughter almost topless on its cover. He was there for that photo shoot, however. Then, it moved from there onto her more scandalous pole dancing routine at the Kids Choice Awards.

Billy Ray Cyrus says that he hasn’t spoken to Miley since the whole bong smoking scandal surfaced. He said, “I’m scared for her. She’s got a lot people around her that’s putting her in a great deal of danger.”
