PT Network in The Netherlands

Design and integration / Otto Cazemier / Mobility consultant

Short introduction• Drs. Otto Cazemier

• Director of Mobycon – Mobility consultants

• More than 20 years experience in public transport

• Expert of PT and DRT-systems (finance, organization and implementation) in The Netherlands and Europe

Long distance / national

government

Last mile / local

authorities

The Dutch PT-network structure

• IC-Train

• Commuter rail

• BRT / Subway

• Tram / bus

• DRT / Bicycle / walking

• Transport for everyone everywhere

A chain is only as strong as its weakest link

• Network is a group that is connected

together

• Integration means bringing together

subsystems into one system and ensuring

that the subsystems function together as a

system

• Six examples from the Netherlands that

can improve the strength of the chain

An integraded PT-system needs to have some kind of director….

Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA stationWhat? Home of Ajax football club, Bijlmer, Heineken Music Hall

PT? Train, subway, regional bus, city bus, PT-bicycle, taxiFive different transport companies, five different authorities

6 Dutch examples of integration in PT

1. Card integration

2. Cooperation between authorities

3. One identity

4. Integration PT and urban development

5. Connected networks

6. Last mile

1 / Card integration• PT-chipcard

• Single ticket for entire PT system, including train

• Ticket integration and possibility for price differentiation

• Specifications:

• Check-in / Check-out

• RFID-tag

• Auto-reload

• Personal, anonymous and disposable cards

• Single-trip (pay per mile) and passes

2 / Cooperation• OV-bureau Randstad: 10 authorities

responsible for local and regional PT

working together

• Not a decision-making unit, but a service-

provider for regional authorities

• Main goals:

• Concrete improvement of PT for the

passengers

• High-quality PT

• Integration and more coherency between

different PT-systems

• Lobby for quality improvements of the

national railway system

3 / One identidy• For example R-Net: High-quality PT

(bus, tram, metro, light rail) in Randstad in the same identity from vehicle to bus-stop. Improves image of high quality. Director: PT-office Randstad

4 / Integration PT and urban development• Stedenbaan+: program in southern

part of the Randstad

• 3,5 mln. inhabitants in the Randstad

• Program of several national, regional and local authorities

• 40% of urban development around railway stations or BRT

• Development of regional network based around (main) transfer points

5 / Connected network

• Randstadrail

• Reason: expansion of Zoetermeer, The Hague, Pijnacker and Berkel

• Integration of former:

• Tramlines in The Hague

• Subway in Rotterdam

• Commuter rail around Zoetermeer

• Hybrid system of low-floor tram and high-floor metro. Stations are therefore provided with both high and low platforms.

6 / Last mile #1

• Cycling as part of your network

• In the Netherlands, more than 1 out of 3 trips between home and stations are by bicycle!

• Filling-the-gap between station and destination. OV-fiets (PT-bicycle): rent-a-bike, facilitated by Dutch Railways. Perfect for distances up to 6 km. Easy to rent and widespread available.

6 / Last mile #2

• Walking route between station and town / destination is also a part of your network

• Can be the reason to choose a car instead of PT…or not travel to town

• Quality of routes and walking paths

• Looking out for pedestrians

• Safety and comfort

• Examples: barrier-free paths, more green

and benches

Thank you! Any questions?
