CINDY GLASS 29-I District Governor August 2016 Greetings fellow Lions! I know that July is a slower month for some clubs, but I do hope that each club is making plans for “New Mountains to Climb”. We have just completed the first month of our new Lions year, and if you haven’t yet done so, it’s still a great time to lay out your club’s goals, and don’t forget to try something new this year! Change is not just for wet babies! On July 9, our 29-I Cabinet met at Ft. Ashby for a combined orientation meeting/first cabinet meeting. I am very proud of the Lions who comprise the cabinet, and I appreciate their commitment to making our district outstanding. I have included the cabinet listing with contact information in this newsletter. The MD Directories are being printed, and as soon as possible, they will be distributed to Club Presidents and Secretaries, as well as Past District Governors and the current cabinet. In the meantime, our IT Chairperson David Damewood has already posted a copy of our portion of the directory on the 29-I website. Thank you to the clubs of Zone 8 who hosted a lovely picnic/District Governor’s visit on July 22, at the Nutter Fort Park. I enjoyed seeing everyone who attended my first official visit for this year. I also enjoyed a visit on July 28 with the Thomas-Davis Lions Club at Blackwater Falls. If your club can arrange to have your District Governor event with one or more other clubs, I would certainly appreciate it! It’s not only advantageous for me, but it’s also beneficial for every club to enjoy the fellowship of other Lions, outside of their own club. In addition, FVDG Ken Shahan and SVDG Rob Bright are willing to visit your club or clubs if I am not available. LCI encourages the District Governor Team approach for official visits to clubs. I apologize for not making this known sooner, but after much consideration, I have decided to not have our traditional “contests” this year. I hope those few clubs who do usually participate are not disappointed. I don’t think activities you do as a club are just for the benefit of the “contest” anyway, and I am sure that you will continue to do all the good things you do. However, I do plan to issue some challenges to our clubs, which I will announce soon, and we will recognize the clubs who participate. Thanks for your understanding. Enjoy the remainder of your summer, and thanks for all that you do in your communities. Lions are the best! We are local, and we are global. We matter. BETWEEN US LIONSFVDG Ken Shahan

Hello, fellow Lions,

Now that your Club is off to a fast start by planning youryear, I want to try and keep you up to date on things that will be coming up. Last month I told you about an event that

starts August 8-14 the “Worldwide Week of Service for Youth.” Lions around theworld are dedicating a week of mentoring and engaging youth in their community.By doing this you will be inspiring the next generation of volunteers.

September the 8th was proclaimed International Literacy Day by UNESCO on November 17, 1965. The aim is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies. Through the Reading Action Program or RAP, Lions made a 10 year commitment to increase reading and literacy rates. It’s up to every Lions club around the world and our District to organize serviceprojects and activities that shows the importance of reading. Here are some ideasfor projects that your Club may want to consider. You might serve as a volunteerreader, purchase reading material for class rooms, promote Braille literacy, organize a book drive. I know you will have some great ideas. For more informationon Literacy go to lionsclubs.org

SSoo lleett mmee kknnooww what you are planning and send me pictures of the event. Sendyour pictures and story line to [email protected].

“Where there’s a need, there’s a Lion”

Bless you for all you do and take time to read to a child!

Till next month, FVDG Ken Shahan

Lion Rob BrightSecond Vice District Governor

We are two-thirds of the way through summer, and at the beginning of a new Lions year. Our Centennial Celebration isright around the corner. What a great time to be a Lions member! This is the perfect time to begin thinking of all the service projects you and your club are going to complete this year. Do not hesitate to go out on a limb and attempt a new project. Even if it was attempted in the past, this is a new era and the time might

be right to accomplish a successful project. Start out by organizing a Worldwide Week of Service for Youth during August 8 -14, 2016. One of the goals for the Zone Chairs is havingclubs come together and complete projects together. Reach out to a neighbor club and complete a project together.

Please remember the WV Flood Victims in your prayers and be generous with your donationsand service projects.

If I can provide any assistance to you or your club, please do not hesitate to contact me by telephone at 304-298-4304 or email me at [email protected].

Together, Let’s Make a Difference.

Membership MattersBy PID Steve Glass, DGMT Coordinator

Just Ask!New Member Recruiting Guide for Clubs

Just Ask! is designed to guide your club through the process of recruiting new members andeffectively managing club growth. The strength of your membership and the health of your club will determine your ability to do what all Lions love to do – serve. So keep in mind that more membersmean more service!

Just Ask! will lead your club through a four-step process for recruiting new members:

• Preparing your club• Creating your club’s growth plan• Implementing your club’s growth plan• Welcoming your new members

First Steps:

The first step to inviting new members to join your club is to consider the following key questions:

1. Decide what you want your club to be.2. Identify what you want your club to accomplish.3. Decide what your goals are.4. Why does your club want new members?5. Who are your target members?6. Who will help your club recruit?

The Recruiting Wheel is an effective method to compile lists of people who could be invited to join your club. Distribute this page at a regular meeting. For each category on the wheel, have an experienced Lion ask, “Who is the one?” Example: Who is the one relative you feel would make a contribution to improve the community? Give your members a brief time to think about their choices.Identify those people and Just Ask!

A recruiting wheel should have each of the following categories included:

• Community leaders• Relatives • Friends • Colleagues• People You Do Business With • Local professionals• Religious Affiliates • Neighbors

The Just Ask! New Member Recruiting Guide for Clubs can be found on the LCI Web site byclicking on Member Center, then on Resources, then on Publications and Forms, then onMembership Form and Publications, then under Publications Inviting New Members, clickon (me300).

It starts with you and you can start today!

Leaders unite people and inspire others to look at things differently. As club president, youhave a unique opportunity to change the way your club serves its members and its community.

Below are IPIP Yamada’s Seven Keys to Success. I encourage you to strive diligently toaccomplish any one or all of them this year. If you do, you will make your members’ collective service experience more meaningful and enable them to become more confident leaders.

1. To increase the value of being a member, host a New Member Orientation.2. To be a club that members can be proud of, conduct How Are Your Ratings? To find ways to make membership in your club more meaningful.

3. To hold high quality service projects, conduct a Community Needs Assessment and carry out a service project.

4. To serve with family members, host a service project that includes family members.5. To increase the number of female and/or younger members, sponsor younger and/orfemale members or charter a club that includes female and/or younger members.

6. To be a leader in your community, take two or more courses or seminars offered online from the Lions Learning Center or offered by your district, multiple district, constitutional area or LCI.

7. To think in dynamic new ways, conduct Your Club, Your Way, Blueprint for a Stronger Club, or the Club Quality Initiative (CEP) to identify and implement changes.

LLeeaaddeerrsshhiipp In the words of International President Chancellor Bob Corlew:

“We lead through service. That is our strength. We are a network of community leaders who have seen the result volunteer service can bring, and the value volunteers provide to their communities.”

“Leadership Development is the way to remain relevant and vibrant as we enter our nextcentury of service. Leadership is vision, knowledge, drive, confidence, optimism, openness, humanity, and caring. It is direction and guidance that inspires education, confidence, and achievement. Leadership is required to inspire and bring out the best in people. It is a process by which a person influences and motivates others to accomplish an objective, and directs an organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent. A leader must inspire others, and instill passion and direction to an individual or group of individuals.”

To read President Corlew’s complete Lions Clubs International Presidential Theme 2016-2017 please see Page 21 of the July/August edition of The Lion or go to www.lionsclubs.org, thenclick on the small arrow in the blue circle pointing to the right and wait for President Corlew’sphoto and logo to appear, then click on Read Now.

Leading is as much a part of the “WE Serve” motto as any other service that we can provide!
