October Synod on Marriage The Bishop has asked us to help him respond to questions sent to him by Pope Francis and the Synod Fathers in prepa-ration for the Synod on Marriage and the Family that will take place this October. He especially asks that all levels of the Church’s life respond to these questions. Therefore, he has put a questionnaire online in both English and Spanish that he asks all of you to fill out online in the next two weeks. This is an important contribution we can make to the prayerful reflection of the whole Church on this important part of our life. The questionnaire can be found at:

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - MEET THE CANDIDATE - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Brothers and Sisters share family and fun and laughter and love…

today we would like you to meet one such pair who also share MUSIC and Confirmation...

STEVEN DUONG (or Big D) is the oldest of the three Duong children. Steven, at age 16, is a Junior at Castro Valley High where AP Calculous and AP Chemistry are his favorite subjects. Steven often plays piano in our Cathedral in Oakland. In fact, he has in-vited Truong Tran, the conductor of the Cathedral choir, to act as his sponsor. In school, Big D keeps busy with Key Club, Red Cross Club, Link Crew and DECA. When it comes to his True Passion….that would be Music (especially classical), as Steven plays several instruments and lists “Music related activities” as his favorite free time endeavor. We hear that he likes to listen to classical music when he studies, which he will be doing for many years to come, as he hopes to pursue a career as a cardiothoracic surgeon. We are pleased to have you in our program Steven, and thanks for bringing your little sister along with you... KATRINA TRAM DUONG is the middle child in the family. Katrina, who will celebrate her 15th birthday in 4 short days, is a CVHS Freshman where she favors her Spanish class. Katrina is a fan of television—watching it is her favorite free time activity, and she is most proud of the fact that she, “Can watch TV shows for an entire day”. She also has an interesting Best Friend … “The fridge, because it has amazing food inside”. But, like her brother, Music occupies most of her time. Katrina plays both piano and violin and she is a section leader in The San Francisco Girl’s Chorus which has been recognized as one of the world’s most respect-ed vocal ensembles. Katrina’s dream vacation? “Korea and Vietnam” or watching the Sun Set in Florence, Italy.

We are so blessed to have this wonderful sibling pair in our Confirmation Program! Little brother, Daniel, can’t be far behind!

LETTER FROM POPE FRANCIS THE “JOY OF THE GOSPEL” CONTINUED...

The Church’s Missionary Transformation—#67 Some cultural challenges The individualism of our postmodern and globalized era favours a lifestyle which weakens the development and stability of personal relationships and distorts family bonds. Pastoral activity needs to bring out more clearly the fact that our relationship with the Father demands and encourages a communion which heals, promotes and rein-forces interpersonal bonds. In our world, especially in some countries, different forms of war and conflict are re-emerging, yet we Christians remain steadfast in our inten-tion to respect others, to heal wounds, to build bridges, to strengthen relationships and to “bear one another’s bur-dens” (Gal 6:2). Today too, various associations for the defence of rights and the pursuit of noble goals are being founded. This is a sign of the desire of many people to contribute to social and cultural progress. Fr. Terry’s Remarks— Individualism is supposed to be the hallmark of the true American. Sure John Wayne and Clint are our other selves and Annie Oakley the femi-nine component. So it may come as a bit of a shock to find Pope Francis reminding us today that individualism is a threat to both family and society. Our Pope is not far off when we recall how many fine men can sizzle a tasty hamburger or change a diaper. I feel some unease when I hear how wonderful everyone and everything was in times past, but feel much happier when we are all encour-aged to be more humane, more tolerant and more accept-ing of others. We are encouraged to see the good side of people and if that’s very difficult, rely on our faith and trust it is there somewhere. With some people and with ourselves sometimes, we really do need grace and faith to make the Leap. We bear not only our own but one an-other’s burdens because we are all Christ's beloved ones.
