KEEP PRAYING St. Monica, whose feast we celebrate in August, is often known as “the persistent mother.” She watched her oldest son, Augustine, turn his back on his Christian faith. Monica was exasperated. For years she gave up talk-ing directly to her son on the advice of a local bishop, who told her that it was better to talk to God about Au-gustine then to Augustine about God. The mother never gave up praying for her son. Even-tually Augustine gave up his wild ways, was baptized, and later ordained and named bishop of Hippo. St. Au-gustine went on to become one of the Church’s greatest scholars. Today’s readings address the importance of persistent prayer. Abraham, in spite of trepidation that he is bother-ing the Lord, continues to ask about the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah. Jesus, in Luke’s Gospel, tells his disciples to “ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” (Luke 11:9). This is our charge: keep praying. LETTER FROM POPE FRANCIS THE “JOY OF THE GOSPEL” CONTINUED...

The Church’s Missionary Transformation—#143

Words which set hearts on fire

The challenge of an inculturated preaching consists in proclaiming a synthesis, not ideas or detached values. Where your synthesis is, there lies your heart. The differ-ence between enlightening people with a synthesis and doing so with detached ideas is like the difference be-tween boredom and heartfelt fervour. The preacher has the wonderful but difficult task of joining loving hearts, the hearts of the Lord and his people. The dialogue be-tween God and his people further strengthens the cove-nant between them and consolidates the bond of charity. In the course of the homily, the hearts of believers keep silence and allow God to speak. The Lord and his people speak to one another in a thousand ways directly, without intermediaries. But in the homily they want someone to serve as an instrument and to express their feelings in such a way that afterwards, each one may chose how he or she will continue the conversation. The word is essen-tially a mediator and requires not just the two who dia-logue but also an intermediary who presents it for what it is, out of the conviction that “what we preach is not our-selves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake” (2 Cor 4:5). Fr. Terry’s Remarks— Last week I remarked how dif-ficult it is to stand before a congregation of God's people and communicate the Kingdom of God with them; add that their ages range from one year to one hundred, plus that there are people from different nations and cultures. It now becomes not so much a question of language, or knowledge or ethnicity but a meeting of loving hearts and mutual communion. We are in a place where both homi-list and people allow God to speak to them in the inner recesses of their hearts and spirits. The Lord is not re-stricted by age or culture but speaks to everyone in their own tongue. Remember at Pentecost : ''and each one heard them speak in his or her own language.'' Pope Francis puts it beautifully when quoting from second Co-rinthians: '' what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake.'' (2 Cor 4:5). Oh! how blessed are we all.
