Reflections ~ Reflexiones GGoossppeell MMaatttthheeww 2255:: 3311--4466 Today, on the feast of Christ the King, we read that a ruler or leader should be like a shepherd. The leader is to care for all the people and protect them. And a wise and loving ruler knows that what is important for the people is equally important for their leader. In today's gospel, the ruler is also a judge. At the last judgment, Christ is pictured as the king who judges the nations. How does he judge? On the basis of care and concern for the needy. Did you notice in the gospel that all the people were surprised at the king's answer to their questions? How lucky we are to have Jesus tell us what they did not seem to know, that when we do for others, we do to him, and that we will be judged on our works of mercy and justice. Take a moment to think about these works that the gospel mentions. Ask Christ to reign and rule in your heart and in the whole world. 1.) In this reading, what criteria does the ruler/judge use to separate the good and evil ones? List the actions, called Works of Mercy, that are rewarded in this story. List the actions that are not rewarded. Those who were brought into the kingdom and those who were excluded asked the same question. What was the question? What was the answer? What truth is being suggested? What does the king say at the end of both judgments? Who are "the least" referred to in this story?

Pastor’s Message~ Mensaje del Párroco A KING LIKE NO OTHER

We have not elected God as president. There are no referendums on God's will, and no chance of recall votes. God as King seems strange in our democratic, individualistic society. Jesus experienced oppressive rulers--think of Herod and

Pontius Pilate--but he connected his kingly status to humble service, and instructed his followers to be servants. He humbled himself, became human, suffered, and died for us. The Lord of glory hung on a cross of shame to free us from the bondage of sin and death. He is Lord, King, and Judge, but his justice is intended to lead to our repentance and ultimate salvation. We believe "he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end." The scriptures say that God delays Christ's return so we all have time to repent. Christ our King offers us true freedom as the beloved children of God. Copyright (c) 2010, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. Living Stewardship Now: A Prayer to Christ the King from the liturgy: Almighty and merciful God, you break the power of evil and make all things new in your Son Jesus Christ, the King of the universe. May all in heaven and earth acclaim your glory and never cease to praise you. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Living Stewardship Now:.

Copyright (c) 2010, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

TTrreeaassuurree FFrroomm OOuurr TTrraaddiittiioonn:: Today we have a modern feast, less than a century old, and placed at the very end of the liturgical cycle of Sundays only in 1969. In 1925, the world was in a sorry state from the vantage point of Pope Pius XI. The winds of war had swept the map of Europe raw, and ancient Christian dynasties had fallen in Russia and Spain. Although the Great War had ended, wars were breaking out everywhere. Fascism was already in control in Italy, and Nazism was on the horizon for Germany. The disorder making its claim on the human race was, the pope felt, an insult to the Divine Order. Pius XI designated the last Sunday in October as a day of universal recognition of the kingship of Christ. Creating this feast was an act of bravery by the pope, who was standing up against idolatry of the state and the dehumanizing forces of the modern world, things that are not hard to detect in today’s world as well. In 1969 it seemed fitting to move the feast to a place of honor at the end of the year, a way of summing up the whole movement of the liturgical year toward the perfection of the Kingdom of God. In recent decades, many Protestant churches have adopted this day from the new Roman calendar, so it is shared now with the Church of England, the Episcopal, Presbyterian, and Lutheran churches, and others. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
