irst Reading: Isaiah 53:10-11

In this passage from Isaiah of the Exile, the prophet comforts the Jewish refugees in Babylon by claiming that out of their suffering, symbolized by the plight of the “suffering servant,” justification will come. For us Christians, the prophet’s words provide insight into the mystery of Jesus’ passion. He, too, was a servant whose suffering brought justification.

econd Readin Hebrews 4:14-16

In this weekend’s portion of the Letter to the Hebrews, the author uses the image of the high priesthood to reflect on the meaning of Jesus’ death. Because Jesus was tempted and suffered like all human beings, he understands the frailties of the human condition.

ospel: Mark 10:35-41

In this important passage form the Gospel of Mark, Jesus corrects those who seek positions of prestige in the Christian community. Because Jesus gave his life in service, authentic Christian leadership is characterized by an attitude of service. Leadership that dominates is not authentically Christian.

We invite you to prayerfully reflect on the Readings for the week of October 21

TRUE GREATNESS

" Jesus said, . . . whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant;

whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all." (Mark 10: 35-45) Jesus speaks to us about true greatness in the Kingdom of God. Here is a reflection I hope you will enjoy. This past summer, 17-year-old Maddy Wilford was a volunteer intern at Broward Health North Hospital in

Parkland, Florida - the hospital that saved her life last February. Maddy was shot several times during the February 14 massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. When EMTs found her in a classroom, she was so weak they thought she was dead. She was brought to Broward Health North bleeding from her lungs, with broken ribs and injuries to her tendons and muscles in her arms. She underwent five surgeries in two days. But Maddy survived and returned to school this fall.

Maddy spent this past summer interning with the surgeon who treated her. "With my injuries, I would have been dead," Maddy says. "The work they performed on me, and how quickly I recovered - it made me become more interested."

Seventeen students, teachers and coaches were killed at Parkland. Maddy is part of another group: the 17 who were shot and survived and are now finding their way forward. Some of the 17 have recovered quickly and returned to school; for others, the wounds are deeper and the healing is slower. Maddy is doing OK: her physical wounds have healed, but she still gets tired faster than she used to. She suffers from the occasional panic attack when a sudden loud noise goes off (such as a fire alarm); she finds it difficult to stay focused, but she's determined to do well this school year.

While other Parkland students became active in the anti-gun violence movement, Maddy has found her focus on medicine "because that's what I understand." "Some people would go through what [Maddy] went through and never want to set foot in a hospital again," her father, David, says. But for Maddy, returning to the hospital has only reinforced her interest in medicine. And the summer experience seemed to help her heal by showing her how to allay the pain of violence and illness.

Working in the hospital this summer was a transformative experience for Maddy. During her internship she saw a man die of stab wounds. She watched as doctors performed one of the surgeries that saved her own life. She snipped excess threads from sutures and learned how to identify a patient's veins on an ultrasound. She scrubbed in to watch a vascular surgeon graft a floppy bovine artery onto a vein in a patient's arm. At one point, blood soaked the blanket covering the patient, but Maddy was unfazed. She held the patient's skin taut as a surgical assistant placed a row of staples into the patient's arm. She saw both the dedicated skill and the uncompromising compassion possessed by every good doctor and nurse.

Maddy had taken the first step in realizing her dream of practicing the kind of medicine that saved her life. [The New York Times, August 21, 2018.]

In the care she received, Maddy Wilford was inspired by the professionalism and generosity of heart and spirit of the dedicated doctors, nurses and staff at Broward Health North. In today's Gospel, Jesus extols that same spirit of selfless service that Maddy saw in the medical staff at Broward: to put ourselves and our skills at the service of those in need, of the suffering, of the victims of violence and injustice. Only in imitating the servanthood of Christ do we experience the true depth of our faith; only in embracing his compassion and humility in our lives do we enable the Spirit of God to renew and transform our world in God's life and love. I WILL BE YOUR SERVANT

We are called to live as Jesus’ disciples. Each day we are asked to make choices to serve others, to put others’ needs before our own desires.

Adults: What motivates me to live as Jesus’ disciple? What part of discipleship causes me the most difficulty?

Children: What is one thing that I can do this week to help someone in need?

A Family Perspective: In the daily routine of family life, power struggles seem unavoidable. Whenever two or more people live together, there will be occasions of disagreement and attempts to exert influence over each other. Our Gospel can be an invitation to consider how authority is exercised in your household. There is a temptation to exercise our authority in ways that show our power over others. Especially when conflicts emerge, many of us rely upon the power we believe our role gives to us. Jesus teaches us that there is a more persuasive form of leadership. In these daily challenges we have the opportunity to practice and teach the kind of service and leadership Jesus modeled for us in his ministry and in his passion and death.

As you gather as a family, invite family members to participate in a role play in which family roles are reversed. For example, you might assign children the role of parents putting their children to bed with parents acting like the children. Or you may have them role play parents asking for cooperation from children to clean up the family room. When the role play is finished, ask if it was an accurate picture of how this situation usually plays out in your household. Does everyone cooperate when asked? What happens when someone doesn't cooperate? How are the conflicts that emerge resolved? Observe that conflicts based on power struggles in situations such as these seem unavoidable in family life. Talk about ways in which you might apply Jesus' words of the Gospel about authority in your family life.

THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK

OCTOBER 28

The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will be administered to those baptized Catholics needing to be anointed after the 12:15 p.m. Mass on Sunday, October 28.

Often, when people are sick, they get discouraged, depressed, angry, annoyed, and afraid. The Church believes that the sacrament offers a special grace to calm the spirit. If physical recovery is God’s will, so be it. If not, then the person needs the grace, strength, and encouragement to bear the illness with dignity.

In the Church's Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, through the ministry of the priest, it is Jesus who touches the sick to heal them from sin – and sometimes even from physical ailment. His cures were signs of the arrival of the Kingdom of God. The core message of his healing tells us of his plan to conquer sin and death by his dying and rising.

The Catholic belief of redemptive suffering, that is, uniting your own suffering with the crucified Jesus, gives a person’s unavoidable suffering meaning and purpose. This notion is explicitly and implicitly expressed in the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick.

BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE

It is our custom here at Assumption to place a blank book on a podium next to the Baptistry for All Soul’s Day, November 2.

For centuries this book was called the Book of the Dead as a stark reminder that according to our faith, we must experience what seems like death, as part of the process of entering into eternal union with our God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We lovingly inscribe the names of all who are dear to our hearts, who have gone before us into this joyful reunion with God.

October 21, 2018 Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Communion. Maria had an abortion in her teens and felt that she couldn't go to confession because she had committed an "unforgivable sin."

Li* and his wife, Vanessa*, were attending counseling to address problems in their marriage. Li decided to finally tell Vanessa that, while in college, he had taken his former girlfriend to get an abortion. Vanessa was devastated.

Jennifer* comes from a large, pro-life family that is active in their parish. At the funeral of her devout, beloved mother, Jennifer was despondent beyond the grief of her loss. Jennifer couldn't stop thinking that her mother in heaven would now discover the secret she had kept for thirty years: the existence of her granddaughter, whom Jennifer had aborted in college because she was too ashamed to tell her parents about the pregnancy.

When Darryl* started attending a parish men's prayer group, he began to feel more connected than ever to his faith. But with his increasing engagement, he began to wonder whether God would really forgive him for encouraging and paying for the abortion of his only child.

Maria, Vanessa, Li, Jennifer, and Darryl are among the tens of millions of Americans whose lives have been directly touched by abortion. Like so many others, they have experienced shame, regret, guilt, and grief. But, as they have also experienced, God's healing love and mercy are always possible.

While many Catholics want to help women and men heal from past abortions, most don't know how to begin. Here are a few ways that Catholics of different backgrounds can assist friends, family members, fellow parishioners, clients-or perhaps even themselves:

If you are like Jennifer, who had an abortion, read the words of St. John Paul II to women who have had abortions.** Be assured that it is never too late to seek God's forgiveness in the Sacrament of Reconciliation and that "you can with sure hope entrust your child" to the Father and His mercy (EV 99).

If someone like Maria reveals an abortion, express your sympathy for her loss. Assure her of God's unconditional love, and encourage her to seek healing and forgiveness. Explain that the U.S. Church's Project Rachel Ministry for healing after abortion offers confidential, compassionate

If you belong to a religious community, you can help people like Maria, Vanessa, Li, Jennifer, Darryl, and others by regularly praying for all who suffer from involvement in an abortion.

If you don't specifically know anyone in circumstances similar to those of the people mentioned, you still have an important mission. Keep all who suffer after abortion in your prayers, and commit yourself to being an instrument of mercy. Show by your example what it means to ask for and extend forgiveness.

All of us are sinners. Yet Pope Francis calls mercy a "bridge that connects God and man, opening our hearts to the hope of being loved forever despite our sinfulness" (MV 2). The Holy Father also reminds us, "As the Father loves, so do his children. Just as he is merciful, so we are called to be merciful to each other" (MV9). Life is a gift from God and so is his mercy. May we cherish and promote both!

Mercy is a “bridge that connects God and man, opening our

hearts to the hope of being loved forever despite our sinfulness.”

ST. TERESA OF AVILA

Here is a meditation from Saint Teresa. This past Monday,

October 15 was her feast day. I found this in Magnificat and

thought I would share with you. She is speaking about

distractions in prayer.

Fr. John

The imagination and memory carry on such a war that the

soul is left powerless. Since the other faculties have ceased to

function, these two are of no avail, not even for doing harm.

They do a great deal though by their disturbance. I say “not

even for doing harm” because they do not have the strength

nor can they concentrate on one thing. Since the intellect

gives them neither much nor little assistance in what they represent to it, they don’t rest in anything but flit

from one thing to the other; they are like little moths at night, bothersome and annoying: so they go from one

extreme to the other. This comparison, I think, gets to the point because they don’t have the strength to do any

harm—they are an annoyance to those who see them.

I don’t know what remedy there is for this since until now God hasn’t made one known to me. I would be

glad to find out one, for, as I say, the imagination and memory often torment me. Both our great misery and,

very clearly, the tremendous power of God are manifested here. For the faculties that run loose weary and

harm us so much; and those that are with his Majesty give us repose.

The only remedy I have found, after having tired myself out for many years, is the one I mentioned in

speaking of the prayer of quiet: to pay no more attention to the memory than one would to a madman. Saint

Teresa of Ávila († 1582), Doctor of the Church, reformed the Carmelite Order.
