Regardless of whether or not someone is still practicing their faith, people still seem to get on board with Lent. We usually give some- thing up, but remember it s not simply about weight loss or getting fit. By doing these things we are trying to make room for something deeper. It s a spring cleaning sort of time. What needs clearing out in my life so that I can make more room for God? Or often do we need to make more room for what God has planned for us? We can get stuck, especially when we are comfortable and don t really want too much to change. But without change we can t grow and things fast become stale in our lives. God is always urging us on because God knows just what possibilities there are for each of us. So Lent might be a time where in giving up something or taking on something, we make space for something new. The gospel today is short and sweet – Jesus is sent into the desert and we too are invited into a desert time. Deserts are interesting places which can allow us to reflect, give ourselves space and we should not be afraid because as the gospel tells us clear- ly today, it is a Spirit led desert. God is with us in this desert. So enjoy Lent, embrace it. How we make use of this time determines what will be.- Jane Mellett [email protected]

This Week: The End of the Alleluias! The Alleluias were buried at 10.00 Mass on Sunday. The First Communion children coloured Alleluias and placed them solemnly in the basket that was then buried under the altar by the Joseph of Arimatheateam. No Alleluias will be said sung or whispered in the whole parish during this wonderful time of Lent which indicates our preparation for Easter and our desire to follow Jesus into the desert. The World Meeting of Families team prepared the special packs for those who signed up for the Lenten Family Fitness Pack It is a great way to live Lent in family. During the Week the Family Mass team had their meeting to organise the Family Masses over the next few weeks of Lent while the Reader s club had their monthly meeting (and pizza ... and chips) to prepare the first reading. The Fáilte Team were present on Sunday to welcome everyone into the coffee dock especially the families of Mason and Daniil who were baptised after the 12.45pm Mass We had a special visitor on Monday at the coffee Dock; Rev. Rob Clemens from Church of Ireland Kilternan came to chat with the priests of the Parish about some projects born from the Ecumenical meeting that we had for the Week of Christian Unity.-

The Parish BINGO is held every Friday at 8.30pm in the Pastoral Centre. All welcome

We want you to be spiritually fit so we offer a spiritual fitness pro-gramme: The Seven Pack for families. We want lent to be a special time for families. So what does the Seven Packcontain? * It asks families to see a family movie together (and some suggestions are included) * It asks families to visit a special place in Dublin or Ireland during lent (a list of fascinating Pilgrimages will be included) * It will include the Trócaire box and asks families to bring it back to the Church at 15.00 on Good Friday and place it at the foot of the Cross. * It will include the readings for every Sunday of lent and asks families to read them together at some time during the week. * It asks families to choose a few words that will not be used in the family during lent. * It asks families to choose a time every week when they will sit with each other, chat and not look at any devices. * And finally it will include a list of Works of Mercy and each family can choose one it will do during lent. If you are alone .. you are not alone. You can invite some of your friends to be your spiritual family this lent and do the Seven Pack together. If you are a widow or a widower you could join up with other people in you same circumstance and do the Seven Packtogether. If your family is not interested you might join up with another family and do the Seven Pack with them There are a few left

Jesus, friend of outcasts

Whatever you eat, whatever you drink, whatever you do at all, do it for the glory of God. We often think of faith and religion only in terms of prayer. The extraordinary thing about Jesus and his teaching, as seen in this passage from St. Paul, is that true religion is to be found in the ordinary things of life and true faith is to be lived in daily life. This is especially true in the day-to-day loving that is marriage. Each couple live out their spirituality in the ways they tenderly love one another. And in family life the quality of love is what makes people holy. In our life together in our parish we are called to the spirituality of being a community in which we care for one another. We need prayer as part of it all both to grow in the power to love and to celebrate the goodness of love. It is only through the power of God that we can love as we should. Johnny Doherty CSsR
