STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “Not as man sees does God see, because man sees the appearance but the Lord looks into the hearts” 1Samuel 16:7 How often do we invest our time, talent and treasure in creating an appearance that does not matter at all to God? We strive to impress with our clothing, home, ca-reer, possessions, car and other marks of distinction. But none of these illusions of greatness will impress God. In-stead, He will look into our hearts to see how much we loved Him, how much we loved others and how we showed that love by the way we used our time, talents and treasure here on earth.

Please pray for her and all the faithful departed

By now you should have received the Lent/Holy Week/Triduum/Easter letter from the pastoral staff and me. This includes a schedule of Holy Week and Easter Services. If you did not receive yours, please notify the rectory. We'll send one along quick-as-a-bunny. The letter to which I refer begins with the greeting: HAPPY LENT, the same as the title of this article. While at first glance this may appear to be a contradiction in terms—What is so happy about forty days of self-denial?—as the letter explains, Lenten discipline does not need to equate with Lenten sadness. One can find joy in a deeper relationship with the sacrifice of Jesus, especially with an eye on connecting with him in risen glory. "Happy Lent," is especially appropriate for this particular weekend. This is Laetare! Weekend, a Latin word that is translated, "Rejoice!". You may recall a similar phenomenon during Advent, specifically the Third Week-end which is designated, GaudeTe! Weekend, yet another phrase meaning, "Rejoice!". What the third weekend is to Advent, the fourth weekend is to Lent. Just what is there to rejoice about on this last weekend of March? We're over the Lenten hump, past the half-way point. We are into the stretch run as we move toward Easter, a mere three weeks away. This is certainly good news for those who have faithfully, or almost faithfully, maintained their Lenten resolution to pray, fast, and give alms which were our Ash Wednesday agenda. Just think: only three weeks remaining of our resolve to die with Jesus during these forty days. Rising with Jesus is so close we can practically taste it. What of those who have allowed these first several weeks of Lent to pass without any conscious effort to connect with the Passion and death of the Lord through these disciplines? Is this a happy time for them as well? Absolutely! Even if these weeks of Lent have slipped from our spiritual grasp, there is still time to "get it right." Three weeks of enhanced prayer (both in church and in the home), self-denial (what can we sacrifice that will as-sist us in focusing on the sacrifice of Christ?), and reaching out to the poor in charity (Lenten alms banks continue to be available at the four corners of the church) which provide the opportunity to "make up for lost time." There is still plenty of Lent to put us in position to rise with Jesus when Easter dawns. Let’s get to it! Hopefully, the anticipation of Easter will awaken in us an excitement about the days that precede that solemn feast, namely, Holy Week and The Triduum. From Palm Sunday through Easter Sunday the Church will immerse herself in prayer, the likes of which cannot be paralleled at any other time of year. If Christmas is The most wonderful time of the year, as the song by the same name suggests, then surely this is the most prayerful time of the year. The Liturgies of these days will be lengthier than usual, filled with God's word, hymns, rituals and symbols that bring us into spiritual oneness with Jesus as he enters his holy city, endures his passion, embraces his cross, empties himself of life, and brings that life to a fuller and more glorious reality in his resurrection. This oneness does not require us to transport ourselves 2,000+ years back in time, nor does it demand that we travel to the Holy Land where these events unfolded. NO, it all happens for us and with us right here at St. Cornelius thought the miracle of Liturgy. It is my custom to offer a brief explanation of the Liturgies of Holy Week and The Triduum in the last two Bulletin issues before Easter. This year will be no exception. The importance of what we celebrate and how we celebrate requires a refresher in the meaning of these sacred days. Therefore, beginning next week, I shall endeavor to describe the Liturgies and their significance. In the meantime, have a wonderful last three weeks of Lent.

Father Dan

REST IN PEACE, ANITA

On Saturday, March 18, Anita Rizzo, our Bulletin Editor of nearly nine years, was called from this life to the Kingdom. While on her annual 2-month vacation in Florida, Anita began to feel progressively ill. She spent a few days in the hospital there, where evidence of cancer appeared on various scans. She returned to Chicago and immediately was admitted to Alexian Brothers Medical Center for more tests, when the diagnosis of cancer was confirmed. The cancer was extremely aggressive, claiming her life in only two short weeks.

Anita and I go back to 1985, when I arrived at Our Lady, Mother of the Church, to be Associate Pastor. Anita was the parish secretary, a position she would occupy until the late 1990s. She came over to St. Cornelius from OLMC when I became pastor here. By that time, she had been doing part-time work as Bulletin Editor there, and I invited her to do so here as I expanded the Bulletin.

I shall miss Anita very much. She was good at what she did, and a lot of fun to be around. May she rest in peace, and may the Lord be close to her family and friends. Fr. Dan
