Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Today’s readings teach us that patience, humility, and fortitude are fundamental elements needed to assist in the growth and development of our faith. The entire first chapter of the Book of Habakkuk is a series of rhetorical questions by Habakkuk that are connected to making sense of the invasion of the Babylonians and the capture of Jerusalem. God’s response assures Habakkuk (through a vision) that God is indeed control of events and that faith, above all else, will sustain Israel in these turbulent times. We hear in the Gospel reading for today the apostles ask Jesus, “Increase our faith.” It is significant that the “apostles” are asking this question of Jesus, and not just the “disciples.” Apostles are a select group among the many disciples who Jesus himself called and sent out on mission, healing the sick and exorcising the demons (see, for example, Lk 6:12-16; 9:1-6). This distinction between apostle and disciple helps us understand Jesus’ response to the apostles’ request, “Increase our faith.” Jesus teaches the apostles that the key to increasing faith is to have the attitude of a “servant.” The Greek word used here for “servant” is doulos, which is better translated as “slave.” Jesus explains that growing one’s faith is closely connected to humility: follow all that the Lord commands, humbly and diligently, and a deepening of faith will naturally occur. In this way, the Twelve Apostles will model how to increase faith to the many disciples.

Gravitational Waves at Regis Faith and Reason in Catholic Education

Thursday, October 13th 7pm, St. Thomas More (Rochester Room)

In 2015 the LIGO and Virgo Collaboration made the first detection of a gravitational-wave signal produced by the merger of a pair of black holes more than a billion light-years away. Dr. Luca Matone, physics teacher at Regis HS, and Fr. Ian Gibbons, S.J., academic dean at Regis, will lead a discussion of faith and reason as it imbues Catholic education in the 21st Century. Dr. Matone will outline his work with the monumental LIGO project, and Fr. Gibbons will demonstrate how the Regis mission brings science and theology together into a comprehensive Catholic formation.
