From the Pastor’s Desk
Last Sunday, I celebrated a memorial Mass for my dad and my brother combined. My mom made the special request. We sort of stopped doing so after a few years after their anniversaries of death. Instead my mom and a few brothers would come to my former parish for Mass which would be offered for them. Here at IHM, I think you have to wait for a mass opening till the year 2023! Just kidding! In fact, it is great to see the Mass book full. It is a good and holy thing to pray for the dead, as the holy scriptures teach us.
Like my mom, my dad was an immigrant. In fact, my brother Denis who died was also an immigrant having been born in Ireland. After the Mass, my oldest brother, John Joe, asked if he could speak to this gathering in my mom’s house. He said he was thinking about our father and those days when he left Ireland in the late forties. He reminded us that our dad was turned away from entry to the United States because of some mistakes made in his paperwork. He was then rerouted to Vancouver. My brother also reminded us of what that must have been like to spend a year in a place not knowing anyone and being away for holidays such as Christmas and Easter with no family members working away in a warehouse. My brother was on a roll when he then spoke of the mystery of it all when my dad finally arrived in New York and shortly after met my mom. He said to us that fateful meeting with my mom only happened because he was delayed entry to the United States. And he pointed out the obvious, namely, that if dad didn’t meet mom, well, none of us would be here!
It was a sobering and heartfelt reflection. Immigration is a hot topic these days. I don’t intend to make it any hotter! We really have to come to terms with legal and illegal immigration, with political asylum (and all that opens up!), and yes, with utter poverty and destitution. Everything has to be on the table and no shouting please! And of course, we must pray for God’s guidance and our country’s well being.

Last week, we celebrated the feast of St. Frances Cabrini who is the patroness of im-migrants. Let’s call upon her to help us as well. By the way, last Saturday, I was happily surprised by a “caravan” of former parishion-ers who decided to visit. They were from the Dominican Republic, the Philippines, Peru, Venezuela, England, and the Bronx! Here is snapshot of the happy occasion. They fell in love with IHM

Dear Father Lynch, I am very grateful for your generous 2018 World Mission Sunday gift of $4,649.00 for the support of the Church’s missionary work from the people of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. Through the Propagation of the Faith, you are part of the service and the very presence of the Church throughout the Missions. Indeed, you are vitally connected to the work of local priests, and Religious Sisters and Brothers, to the witness of lay catechists – to the service of all in the Missions who bring the love of God to those who are so in need of His love and peace. While continuing financial help is vitally needed and most welcome, prayerful support is sought as well. Thanking you again for your generous participation in this year’s World Mission Sunday celebration and with all prayerful best wishes, I am Sincerely, Rev. Monsignor Marc J. November 17-18, 2018 World Day of the Poor Month of the Faithful Departed
Dear friends in the Lord: Thanksgiving Day is the time of the year when we—as individuals, fami-lies, a nation, and faith communities—come together to give thanks to the Lord for the many blessings He has given us. It is also the time when we give something back to those in need. For a century, Catholic Charities has been serving New Yorkers in need by providing a range of services that provide help and create hope for the most vulnerable among us, Catholics and non-Catholics alike.
As part of Catholic Charities centennial, last year, I am pleased to inaugurate the Catholic Charities Campaign for Charity and Justice special collection in our par-ishes. This was not a new special collection, but a re-placement for the annual Catholic Campaign for Human Development special collection. This collection provided an important opportunity to reinforce engaging acts of charity and justice as essential to living out our Catholic faith. It also raises awareness of the scope of Catholic Charities work in our local communities. A key feature of this collection is that a significant portion of the funds raised will provide a number of seed grants to Archdioc-esan parishes and due to your generosity last year, more than 25 parishes across the Archdiocese were able to receive grants to serve our neediest neighbors.
Your support of this collection makes a difference for people living in poverty across the Archdiocese of New York. Please prayerfully consider how you are able to help the Campaign for Charity and Justice this year. If you would like more information about this special collection and those whom it supports, visit www.catholiccharitiesny.org/cccj/.
With gratitude for your generosity and prayerful best wishes to you and your loved ones for a blessed and happy Thanksgiving, I am,
Faithfully in Christ, †TimothyMichaelCardinalDolan Archbishop of New York
