Mes chers amis,

Now that the Christmas season has concluded, we return to the Church’s Liturgical season called Tempus per Annum, literally, the Time through the Year, known as Ordinary Time. During this season, we do not celebrate any particular event in the life of Our Lord Jesus (such as we do at Christmas, Easter, etc.). Rather, we accompany Him through His public ministry in the Gospel as He preaches, teaches, heals, and forgives sins, gradually revealing fully who He is as the Son of God and Savior of sinners.

On this Second Sunday of Ordinary Time, we are presented with Our Lord’s first miracle at the wedding of Cana. We see Jesus’ divine power – He is able to change water into wine. At the same time, we see Mary’s motherly care. It is because of her that Jesus performs this miracle. Because she believed that Jesus could do it and instructs His disciples to trust in Him, He performs this miracle and people begin to believe in Him. We see again here that the Blessed Virgin Mary’s only role is to lead all people to her divine Son, Jesus Christ, the Lord. As the Immaculate Conception, the whole of her life was conformed to God and His holy will. And as our Mother, she continues to tell us as she did His disciples: “Do whatever He tells you!” Let us listen to her maternal guidance and receive her motherly love so that we may do the Lord’s will in all things.

This past Friday, January 18, 2019, hundreds of thousands of people marched peacefully and prayerfully on our capital in Washington, D.C., in the annual March for Life, calling for the overturn the unjust Supreme court decision of Roe vs Wade that has permitted millions of innocent children to be brutally murdered through abortion. Think about so many mothers and fathers of those aborted children who continue to suffer the effects of this evil. In all the dioceses of the United States, January 22, is observed as a particular day of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion, and of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life. It’s a day of fast and abstinence. Please join in the prayer and fasting this Tuesday for this most important cause of life!

Gospel Summary

John 2: 1-11

While the Wedding in Cana is a familiar story, it only appears in John’s Gospel. Scholars call it the first of Jesus’ signs. Mary, Jesus’ mother, observed that the

wine was running low at a wedding feast she and Jesus were attending. She didn’t specifically ask Jesus to do something about the situation, but he understood the

implication. He instructed the servants to fill six stone jars with water and then take some to the waiter in

charge. The waiter was surprised that the bridegroom had saved the best wine for last. The servants were

surprised because they knew the jars were filled with water and they had witnessed something remarkable.

Reflection for Families

The point Jesus wanted to illustrate by performing this sign was to introduce a change. Many scholars interpret

the wedding as the new age and the huge stone jars represent the magnitude of the wonder. There is great abundance in the story and that is the message of the new order Jesus promises – God lavishes us with his

abundant love and we come to know that love through Jesus.

Bringing the Gospel Into Your Family

Change is often good for us. Jesus brought about a good change in the world. Think about some changes your

family can make (or has already made) like rearranging furniture, breaking a routine, or going on vacation. Talk together about how these changes excite you, cause you

to grow, or give you a different view of things.

Just a reminder; we are always in need of people for the Adoration Chapel on Thursday. Please consider this as

the New Year begins. Maybe this is something you could add to your weekly schedule. Stop in the Chapel at any time on Thursday or call the Parish Office to setup an hour. Anytime you can spend with the Lord is special,

no matter how long or how short the time is. The Lord is always waiting!

In the East, the litany called the Akathistos and the Paraclesis remained closer to the choral office in the Byzantine churches, while the Armenian, Coptic, and Syriac traditions preferred popular hymns and songs to the Mother of God. But in the Ave Maria, the theotokia, the hymns of St. Ephrem or St. Gregory of Narek, the tradition of prayer is basically the same. Mary is the perfect Orans (pray-er), a figure of the Church. When we pray to her, we are adhering with her to the plan of the Father, who sends his Son to save all men. Like the beloved disciple we welcome Jesus’ mother into our homes, for she has become the mother of all the living. We can pray with and to her. The prayer of the Church is sustained by the prayer of Mary and united with it in hope.
