President’s Message – by Virginia Taylor I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year. I hope all of you are ready for an exciting new year with the Chula Vista Genealogical Society. First, I want to thank our outgoing board for all of their hard work over the last two years. Under the guidance of Gary Brock we have become a first class society. Last year we put on a very successful seminar with nationally known speakers. We had an attendance of over 100, which is the largest seminar we have ever put on. The new board is looking forward to continuing and building on what the previous board has accomplished. We can do it only with the help of the entire society. There is a place for each and every one of you to help the society move forward. If there is a committee you would be interested in working with please let your wishes be known to any one of the board members. If you have not yet paid your dues for this year, please do so as soon as possible. The dues are now $30.00. We cannot continue to grow as a society without your monetary support. Our first general meeting of the year should be very interesting. Butch Hibben will teach us how to create our life stories. Please come and hear what he has to say. The seminar committee is now hard at work preparing for our spring seminar. CeCe Moore will be our guest speaker. She will be talking about different aspects of DNA. Right now 23andMe has a $99.00 special for the autosomal DNA test. That is a saving of $200.00. If you have your autosomal DNA test done by 23andMe before the seminar, CeCe will help you analysis your results at the seminar.

CVGS Research Group News – by Randy Seaver

The December meeting of the CVGS Research Group had 10 members in attendance. It was a lively group! Randy discussed some of the news from the last month - the DNA test deals with 23andMe and FamilyTreeDNA, plus the Geno 2.0 announcement, and the RootsMagic 6 announcement. He also shared the SDGS Seminar announcement for 14 January 2013 with David Rencher speaking. Randy showed off his new free website with ancestors, sources, photos and documents (http://my.rootsmagic.com/rjseaver/). He also showed his "cousin bait" reports online at Scribd () (free) with 10 generations for each of his great-grandparents. He also discussed how he used the free 1000Memories site (www.1000memories.com) to put his family photographs online. Lastly, he went through the process of finding and saving New York land records from the FamilySearch record collections. In the second hour, each person in the group shared their challenges, successes and questions, including:* Joanna was very excited after several sessions on Wednesday mornings with John. They found a 1910 article online (in an Ancestry Member Tree) that was a biography of her great-grandfather. It discussed his life and work, and his family - parents, grandparents, and children too. There was a statement that he was related to Roger Williams. A photograph of the family in the 1920s was also found and displayed. The plan is to use the census to find out more about these families, and to contact the cousin who posted the information.* Jaye is reviewing the research material that she has, and is writing down ideas for further research. She hopes to avail herself of John's expertise on Wednesday mornings, also. She told a story about a relative who died, but had no known next of kin. The funeral home found a $100 bill sewn into his coat that covered the burial cost. Jaye wants to know more about this man, and the group suggested she look in census records, city directories, newspaper archives, online trees, Google, Find A Grave, and more.* Karen had a Christmas card from a cousin asking about cousin Sylvia, who did family history research but is now deceased. An article was found in a Dallas area newspaper online about her. * Ralph's friend had obtained World War II medals for his father from NPRC in St. Louis, so Ralph investigated the process and submitted the SF180 form for his own father.* Bobbie wants to set goals for 2013, including upgrading her DNA tests to get more information on her mitochondrial DNA; adding data to her five-generation chart; use a paid researcher to obtain more information about her Bavarian ancestors; they plan a research trip to Buffalo, N.Y.* Mary Lou found Turner surname ancestral families from 1830 in Ohio to the 1890s in Nebraska, but some entries were Truman or Furner rather than Turner. She is looking for more information about her Irish great-grandfather Harnett born in County Cork in about 1840, who served in the Civil War from Illinois. She has found many records, including a pension record, but none of them list his birthplace or his parents names. The group suggested local historical society holdings, looking at alternate surname spellings, and pursuing siblings and children's vital records, etc.* John has enjoyed helping Joanna with her research on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 12 noon in the Family Research area of the Chula Vista Civic Center Branch Library. He hopes that others will stop by and consult with him when possible. The next meeting of the CVGS Research Group will be Wednesday, 9 January in the Conference Room at the Chula Vista Civic Center Branch Library (365 F Street in Chula Vista.

    Library Assistance Every Wednesday

CVGS member John Finch has volunteered to provide genealogical research assistance and advice in the Family Research section of the Chula Vista Civic Center Branch Library (on the south side of the library, past the library Help desk and the CD/DVD section, near the collection of genealogy books and periodicals). John will be there on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 12 noon to help members and guests. Wi-fi is usually available in this area, so bring your laptops or mobile devices.

December 11 th Holiday Luncheon Review

The Chula Vista Genealogical Society celebrated another successful year of serving the Chula Vista area genealogical community with the annual Holiday Luncheon on Tuesday, 11 December, at the Chula Vista South Branch Library. After a moment of silence for the three CVGS members who passed away in 2012, and for our armed forces everywhere, the assembled crowd of 30 hungry members and guests dug into the feast prepared and organized by the Hospitality Committee. The society provided ham, turkey and beverages, and the attendees brought everything else as potluck. There was plenty of great food and wonderful conversation at the tables as we enjoyed the meal. Outgoing President Gary Brock narrated "Steps in Time," a slide show presentation of CVGS historical highlights - mainly involving food and holiday parties, it seemed, from 1986 to 2003. Many of the persons shown were identified on the slides, and most others were named by attendees at the luncheon during the show. Gary next introduced the two new Honorary Life Members of the Chula Vista Genealogical Society - cited for their long membership and service to the Society. Dottie Johnson and Helen Thompson were introduced through short photo presentations, then personally introduced and honored. The outgoing Board officers present were honored with certificates, applause and gratitude - Bobbie Lane, Mary Lou Montez, and Virginia Taylor. The outgoing Committee Chairs present were also honored with certificates. Gary then introduced and swore in the 2013/2014 Officers (in the picture, from the left) - Barbara Ibaibarriaga (Second VP), Diane DeVincenzo (Treasurer), Karen Yarger (Secretary), Ralph Munoz (First VP) and Virginia Taylor (President). A notebook containing the Bylaws, Standing Rules, and Officer Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) were presented to each Officer. There were a number of door prizes, including a Father Christmas, a Nutcracker, and a Christmas Angel. The table decorations were won in the opportunity drawings. Lastly, the bring one-get one gift exchange was held. The attendees donated a large number of canned food items and children's toys for the Salvation Army. All in all, this was an excellent, and filling, holiday luncheon.

Rest in Peace, Lois Waterman (1927-2012)

Bernice Heiter was notified that former CVGS member, Lois Waterman, passed away in Sparks, Nevada on 15 April 2012. Bernice remembers Lois's contribution to CVGS: “I knew Lois through Red Cross and we were good friends. When I met her, she was trying to put together the history of her husband's family from mounds of pictures and documents of their connection to the founding of both Gary, Indiana and DePere, Wiscnsin. I invited her to come to my beginners' classes, and also offered to help her with her project. She then joined our society and was an active member, first working on the first book inventory we ever did, then as a dedicated member of the Glen Abbey Cemetery Committee. Her husband was a recovering cancer patient, and, when their son found permanent employment in Nevada, he wanted them there so he could take care of them when they needed help. I've lost a good friend.”

2012 in Review, by Dick Eastman (published by permission of author) Where did the time go? It seems like only yesterday that we welcomed the New Year. Now we are at the end of the year and looking back. Indeed, it seems like a whirlwind, but 2012 was generally a good year for genealogists. More and more records became available online, some new software appeared (especially for handheld devices), the use of DNA in genealogy research continued to expand, and the resources available at our fingertips continues to mushroom. I will also point out there were several companies were acquired by or merged with other companies. These acquisitions and mergers can be seen as either good news or bad news but I suspect that, in most cases, the result will be stronger companies that are better positioned to serve the genealogy community. All in all, I think it was a good year. Here are some of the highlights, along with one or two lowlights, of the past twelve months:

Census Records: Undoubtedly, the biggest story of 2012 was the release of the 1940 U.S. census. Genealogists waited 72 years for these records to be released. For the first time ever, the census records were released only as online images on the Internet. The web servers were overwhelmed the first few days the images became available, to the surprise of almost no one. However, the load "simmered down" within a few days and now images are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Two separate indexing efforts, one was a commercial effort by Ancestry.com and another by a consortium of volunteer indexers, produced searchable indexes within weeks after the release of the images. You can access the indexes and images at several online sites. See http://1940census.archives.gov/ for more information.

Conferences: • Who Do You Think You Are? Live! in London was held in February, again becoming what appears to be the largest

genealogy show in the world with 12,000 or more attendees. This three-day event has to be seen to be appreciated. It is crowded, noisy, and everyone seems to have a great time.

    • RootsTech2012 was held in Salt Lake City with more than 4,400 attendees. This has become the largest genealogy "trade show" in North America.

    • The National Genealogical Society held a large annual conference in Cincinnati, Ohio. Excitement seemed to grow when the Society announced that the 2013 conference will be held in Las Vegas!

    • The Federation of Genealogical Societies held its annual conference in Birmingham, Alabama with a smaller than usual crowd in attendance. Part of the reason was Hurricane Isaac that was to the west of Birmingham in the days preceding the conference, blocking many would-be attendees from travel.

Business News: Nothing new here! Companies continued to acquire other companies all year. Here are some of the highlights:

    • 1000Memories.com was acquired by Ancestry.com.• Archives.com was acquired by Ancestry.com• Late in the year, Ancestry.com was acquired by Permira for $1.6 billion• MyHeritage.com acquired Geni.com• ReadyMicro.com, a manufacturer and operator of high-speed microfilm digital cameras was acquired by

    Mocavo.com.

Online Web Sites: Mocavo first became a genealogy-specific search engine that searches only genealogy web sites looking for information about individuals. The site still does that but has since expanded to become much, much more, including a publishing site for anyone who wishes to use the company's services and a free scanning service as well. You can find more at http://www.mocavo.com.

Online Databases: This story has been reported every year for several years: more and more online genealogy databases have appeared in the past year than ever before. Luckily, the same story continued to be true in 2012. The biggest new database probably was the 1940 U.S. census. However, dozens of others were also added, including both large and small record sets. Examples included the Trumbull County, Ohio Casualties database of veterans' deaths, up through mega-databases from FamilySearch, Ancestry.com, FindMyPast, World Vital Records, and others. Ancestry.com, FamilySearch.org, FindMyPast.com, DeceasedOnline.com, and many other web sites released almost weekly announcements of new additions to their online databases.

Indeed, 2012 was an event-filled year and contained mostly good news. I think it is exciting to look forward to 2013!

Tips, Hints & TriviaA Genealogy New Year

    by Connie Moretti

We make all sorts of New Years’ Resolutions - to lose weight, get more exercise, read more books - and so on, so why not some for our genealogy? How about some of these:

Read more local history - a search on Google Books for the areas you are researching can be a starting point. One of my favorite jumping-off points is the children's section of the local library. Local histories for kids are often fact filled and presented in a quick-to-finish format.

Confirm your documentation - verify that each fact you have recorded has source information that you can find again as needed. The newest computer genealogy programs make this so much easier since you only have to list a source once and then just identify it as you use it again.

Evaluate your evidence - does the information you have collected justify your conclusions? Have you transposed dates or ages leading to impossible situations such as children born before their parents’ births? Can you explain how a girl from Mississippi happened to marry a man from Ohio?

Review your record keeping - does the system you are using continue to serve your needs? Do you need to update your file folders, notebooks or computer data base? There is no “correct” way to organize genealogy files as long as your system allows you to find the documents you want.

Plan for future research - make plans to solve those “brick walls.” Have you looked at all possible records? Land, military, naturalization records, every census, city directories, newspapers, voting lists all help. Have you found all their siblings, children and grandchildren?

Reach out to others - contact cousins, even 7th or 10th cousins, as they may have information you did not find. Some family historians use “cousin bait” posting queries on internet sites such as Roots Web, starting a Web Log (blog), or sending postcards to everyone with the same surname.

Share with relatives - have you created booklets or charts for your immediate family? Most computer genealogy programs can do these with little more effort than pushing a button. A DVD of family pictures, maps and documents is another popular way to share.

Dedicate time - in most of our busy lives, sitting down to “do genealogy” can be difficult. Is it possible to set aside a specific block of time at regular intervals? A bit of work devoted regularly to your family history can yield phenomenal results.

Write down your resolutions and keep the list in a safe place. Keep your list brief - three or four resolutions is plenty and will be less overwhelming. Be very specific as to what you intend. “I will read four books of local history for Spencer County, Indiana,” for example. Then in 2014 you can retrieve your list and evaluate how well you kept your resolutions. Randy Seaver on his blog www.geneamusings.com annually gives himself grades of A to F on his prior resolutions and I credit him with the idea for this article.
