by the technology section of the student handbook.

New students enrolling during the school year may participate in the program once

district enrollment documents are completed.

4. SECURITY

4.1 District Managed Settings

District Chromebooks are managed by the Google Education Management Console.

Any attempt by a student to bypass or change district settings by use of third party

software or “jail-breaking” techniques will result in the student no longer having use

of a Chromebook, in addition to further disciplinary actions.

4.2 Storage

When students don’t have their Chromebook within their possession, it should only

be kept in a secure place.

4.3 Online Safety

While at school, Chromebooks will be connected to the filtered district wireless

network. While away from school, students and parents should be aware of the risk

of attaching through other networks.

TECHNOLOGY

Ogilvie Public Schools encourages technology use which facilitates current communication methods, the exchange of information, and the use of computer equipment in pursuit of the District’s curricular, instructional, technological, and research goals as a means to further student education. We are pleased to offer students of Ogilvie Public Schools access to the District’s electronic network, including the Internet. The Internet offers vast, diverse, and unique resources. The District’s goal in providing this service is to promote educational excellence by incorporating the benefits of advanced technology use within classrooms, therefore giving students opportunities for resource sharing, innovation, and communication.

Acceptable Use: Electronic Network \ Internet Student access of the District’s electronic network must be for the purpose of education or research.

Access to the District’s electronic network is a privilege, not a right, and inappropriate use will result in those privileges being revoked. The Technology Coordinator and\or School Principal will make all decisions regarding whether or not a student has violated his\her network use and may deny, revoke, or suspend access at any time.

Network storage areas will be treated like school lockers. Network administrators may review files and communications to maintain system integrity and insure that users are using the system responsibly. Users should not expect that files stored on the district servers will always be private.

Along with access to computers and people all over the world comes the availability of materials that may not be considered appropriate in the classroom. However, the school staff, parents and guardians of minors are responsible for setting and conveying the standards that students should follow when using media and information sources.

Access to the Internet will enable students to explore thousands of libraries, databases, and websites thus enhancing academic opportunities. Families should be warned that some material accessible via the Internet might contain items that are illegal, defamatory, inaccurate or potentially offensive to some people. System configurations have been put in place to protect students from inappropriate content. However, while our intent is to make the Internet accessible to further educational goals and objectives, students may find ways to access other materials as well. Individual users of the District’s electronic network are responsible for their behavior and communications over that network. It is presumed that users will comply with district standards and will honor the agreements they have signed.

We believe that the benefits to students from access to the Internet, in the form of information resources and opportunities for collaboration, exceed any disadvantages. Additional policy reference: Policy 524: Internet Acceptable Use And Safety Policy

Students in grades 5 through 12 are given Google Education email accounts, which are restricted to email transmissions within @ogilvie.k12.mn.us and @student.ogilvie.k12.mn.us addresses only. Email files should not be considered private. Network administrators may review email content to maintain system integrity and monitor responsible use. Students are expected to respect the rights of others within the use of the email system, be responsible at all times, and follow all related policies while using the student email system.

Unacceptable Use a. Sending or displaying offensive messages or pictures; b. Using obscene language; c. Harassing, insulting, or attacking others; d. Damaging computers, computers systems or computer networks; e. Violating copyright laws; f. Using another’s password; g. Trespassing in another’s folders, email, work or files; h. purposes; i. Downloading and\or installing software; j. Using the network for any illegal activity; k. Sending, accessing, uploading, downloading, or distributing offensive, profane,

threatening, pornographic, obscene, or sexually explicit materials l. Using the network to setup non-educational Internet accounts with personal

information, such as chat rooms, auctions, classifieds, etc. Transmission of any material in violation of U.S. or state regulations including copyrighted, threatening, or obscene materials is prohibited. Use for commercial activities by for-profit organizations, product promotion, political lobbying, or illegal activities are strictly prohibited.
