Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel…

My dear friends, today we celebrate the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple of Jerusalem, a Feast occurring forty days after the Nativity of Our Lord. It is also the day we remember St. Gosbert! So, please pray for me.

We are all familiar with Mother’s Day and Father’s Day which we celebrate every year. Why is there not a Parents’ Day where we celebrate father and mother together as a couple? Today should be a good day to focus on both parents together, as we see both parents of Jesus, Joseph and Mary, together make the long jour-ney to Jerusalem to present their firstborn child in the Temple as the law of God required. In the image of Jo-seph and Mary presenting Jesus in the Temple, we have a wonderful model of husband and wife united in practicing the faith and in raising their child in the faith. We read that “When the days were completed for their purification according to the Law of Moses, Mary and Joseph took Jesus to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord.” (2:22) There is a confusion of detail here because, according to Jewish law, purification was for the mother alone while presentation was for the child. The story appears to be speaking of the two cer-emonies as if they were one. Luke stresses the fact that they are doing it “as it is written in the law of the Lord” (verse 23). Joseph and Mary are presented as people who keep God’s laws. Moreover, they are present-ed as doing it together. It is easier to walk in the ways of God when husband and wife walk it together and en-courage each other along the way. If parents are supposed to provide their children with the basic necessities of life, what is more basic than one’s faith in God? No parents would think of allowing their children to decide whether they want to go to school or not, whether they want to learn the common language or not, whether they want to be citizens of their country or not. Parents make these decisions for their children, knowing fully well that when they grow up, they may decide to continue with what they gave them or abandon it. But no par-ent would refuse to send a child to school or teach a child their language and tradition in the name of respect-ing the child’s freedom to choose. Similarly parents have a responsibility to initiate their children into their faith traditions. This is what we see today in the feast of the Presentation as Joseph and Mary present Baby Jesus in the Jewish Temple.

As parents, we have the duty and privilege of raising our children in such a way that they grow up to become good and responsible citizens as well as committed children of God. The example of Joseph and Mary shows us that the best way to achieve this is by leading the way and showing them by the example of our own lives. In the Lord, Fr. Gosbert Rwezahura.

THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD

Today’s readings reflect on something close to the heart of every human per-son: the fulfillment of our deepest desires. Without exception, each of us feels unfulfilled in some way. Despite advances in law, technology, and medicine, every person experiences the frustration of “not yet” or “not enough.” Our hearts always want more. God plants this desire in our hearts. God knows how we ache. What most of us fail to believe, deep down, is that God alone satisfies all our longing. We know, theoretically, that the Creator of the universe provides everything we need, but we could all use more quality time with God to consider the ques-tion, “What exactly do I need to be happy, Lord?” Perhaps we can spend more time in prayer and service, asking the Lord to show us what is truly im-portant in life. In today’s Gospel, the focus is literally and spiritually on Jesus. They model for us how to be happy and holy: performing daily duties peacefully, always ready to recognize Jesus as he reveals himself. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK 2020 This year the week of January 26 through February 1 marked the annual ritual of celebrating Catholic school education across the United States. While each diocese and each school chooses to celebrate in different ways, we all celebrate the same mission of Catholic school ed-ucation. The first and most important work of Catholic schools is to make certain that our young people are formed in the Catholic faith. Without question this is our number one priority every single day at Christ Our Sav-ior Catholic School. Our students pray in their class each day, attend Mass every Wednesday morning, participate in weekly Advent and Lenten Prayer Services, learn about the rosary, Stations of the Cross and many Catho-lic rituals. We make sure that this happens in an academ-ically rich setting, using the best tools of technology and delivered by the most insightful teachers as possi-ble. But when it comes down to it, the Church counts on us to enrich the lives of our young people in a way that no other educational setting can do by teaching, preach-ing and living the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Now that is evangelization! It certainly was a great reason to cele-brate.

WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR YOUR SUPPORT We would like to thank our school families and those parishioners who attended our Spaghetti for Scholars Dinner and Open House that was held on Sunday, Janu-ary 26. We truly appreciate all of your support to our Scholarship Fund. God bless all of you for your prayers and kind words of encouragement.

REGISTRATION FOR 2020-2021 Registration for 2020-2021 is now open for any student who will be entering the Preschool 3 and 4 year old pro-gram as well as Kindergarten through Grade 8. If you can-not make any of these Open House dates, please contact the main office to schedule a personal tour at your con-venience. New students are invited to spend the day at COS and SHADOW. Call to make an appointment for a SHADOW DAY. A student may spend all morning sit-ting in on classes or choose to spend the entire day visit-ing at COS.
