REVIEWS• The Telegraph called it a “Must have Movie”.

• Empire gave the movie a 4 star rating also and called it “Excellent”.

• The Guardian gave The Departed a 4 star rating “Martin Scorsese has got his groove back, or most of it, with what is arguably his best picture since GoodFellas: a big, brash, splattering violent mob opera starring Jack Nicholson giving it the full Pavarotti, with an outrageous and outrageously enjoyable performance that doesn't so much go over the top as go over the ionosphere.”

• The rolling stones also gave The Departed a 4 star rating.

THE NARRATIVE• https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4nUFxsZqpA

• “An undercover state cop who has infiltrated an Irish gang and a mole in the police force working for the same mob race to track down and identify each other before being exposed to the enemy, after both sides realize their outfit has a rat.”

• During the opening we witness, what we can see as a important character as we never see his face but only hear is voice and see is movement, this is used to create mystery for us and excitement.

• We firstly get introduced to crime scenes of riot’s then we witness a café which has what we can see a manger, women working and a little kid with someone we cant really see which makes the audience confused about why he is taking money from the manger but then getting them to give food to the boy to take home.

• As the scene develops we still don’t get to see his face until he shoots the lady and her friend, which is a key convention in a thriller because in most thrillers we see crime taking place. We see this man seeming like he is teaching this boy from something.

SOUND

The shoots are also exaggerated to highlight

the complex story. It makes us think and

wonder why he has killed these 2 people.

Non-diegetic music is played when in the

background before the café and after the café.

This is to let us know the mood of the scene so it can build up tension.

Over voice is a key part of this opening as it is used

mainly the whole way through, this is done

because it allows something to be explained but we also see the action.

We also here a country American type of music played throughout the whole opening. This is

strange because it’s more positive music then scary

tense music.

CAMERAWORK

In most films we get close up’s but it occurs a lot more in horror and thriller movies. We

see the boys facial expression and we try and

figure out what he is thinking or even what the situation is.

Wide shot was used to show us on the beach that they were alone and know

was around therefore could get away with the

murder.

We get a POV shot which is another key convention to a thriller. We see the point of view from the mysterious

man. This is once again used to make the audience know

that its important.

EDITING

Fast pace was shown to us straight away in the beginning, as we see

the riots taking place in Boston.

Cross cut was also used during the beach

and also the car garage. This is to show us these 2 things are important

and link together.

Slow pace was used in this opening because

the voice over was one of the most important pieces of information

happening.

MISE EN SCENE

The cash could be a prop also as we get a close up of it. It shows us crime is going

on and this man could be blackmailing him.

Lighting throughout this is very dark and we never

get to see the mysterious mans face until the very

end of the opening.

The gun is used as a prop. We see the gun is used to shoot the 2 people on the

beach. This tells us that crime is taking place in the

situation. Therefore telling us it’s a thriller.

We also see some dark locations apart from the café

but people don’t notice anything going on apart from the little boy. The garage also

has many people working there but no one seems to

notice again.
