TEACHER’S GUIDE TO READING
Understanding the Phonics Drill Reader (p. 126): This page presents a brief introduction
to the phonics word drill method, where to start in the PDR, and the value of its content.
The Three Components of High Literacy (pp. 127–135)
Note: Even if you’ve read this type information in the Christ-Centered Phonics Master Guide,
these pages are worth reading again because developing these essential skills is so important.
High literacy involves not only the ability to sound out words correctly but also the ability to
understand the material being read and apply that information in a personal way. Those words just
highlighted reflect the three levels of reading, which will be covered as follows:
The First Reading Level—Phonics (pp. 127–129): This section explains the 44 elementary
speech sounds plus how students can become proficient in the reception level of reading—phonics.
Included are the One and Two Vowel Rules which, when applied correctly by even beginners, make
it possible to read hundreds of short words in a relatively brief time.
The Second Reading Level—Comprehension (pp. 129–133): After the basics of phonics
is understood, students should also work on comprehension skills by learning about the “who, doing,
and what” of sentences plus the four essential skills for reading comprehension.
The Third Reading Level—Application (pp. 133–135): This third level can be defined as
“understanding why an idea was given in the first place and how the author wants to change the
reader’s life through it.” These pages provide some guidelines for how to select God-honoring
supplemental reading materials to promote wholesome life changes in your student(s).
Preparing to Teach the PDR (pp. 135–146): This section is divided as follows:
Student Text Instructions (pp. 135–143): How to teach a “Spiritual Theme” and “Teaching
Tips” for specific categories of pages is provided. Although the student’s pages (pp. 1–124) include
some applicable phonics rules, all the rules for Flashcards 1–118 are at Appendix 1 (pp. 148–155).
Hearing the Assignment and Time Goals (pp. 143–144): These pages provide general
guidelines for how to effectively listen to oral drills and reading assignments. To promote mastery, a
suggested range of word-per-minute (wpm) grade level goals to “pass” each page is included.
Remedial Reading Tips (pp. 145–146): If a student has been faithfully practicing the word
drills and applying phonics rules correctly, yet he is still struggling to “pass” pages, refer to this
section for some suggestions that may help you discern the possible problem(s) behind ongoing
struggles.
