Dear teachers,

My name is Gill Budgell and I have been privileged to work together with an expert publishing team and a group of teachers in Spain to author Pip’s Phonics.

Pip’s Phonics is a carefully structured phonics scheme for young learners of English. It is unique in that it has been written specifically for Spanish speaking children learning English. It is based on the principles of systematic synthetic phonics which is now widely recognised to be the most successful way to teach children the basic skills of early reading, writing and pronunciation in English. This scheme takes the very best of synthetic phonics teaching and combines it with the very best of English language teaching to produce a course that will work perfectly for you and your class!

Best regards,

Pip’s Phonics is based on Synthetic Phonics which is used in English speaking countries to teach children the basic skills of reading and writing. It is a process of teaching children the relationship between letters (graphemes) and sounds (phonemes) for reading, spelling and handwriting. The word synthetic relates to the process of identifying, sounding out and then synthesising or blending the sounds in a word from left to right in order to read it. This enables learners to decode from print to speech.

In English speech we have 44 phonemes but only 26 letters in the alphabet with which to represent these sounds in writing. Unlike most other languages, English has many spelling alternatives for a sound as well as many letters which can be pronounced in more than one way. Pip’s Phonics ensures that children know some of these associations, rules and anomalies in order to crack the code for speaking, listening, reading and writing.

The letters and sounds are not taught in an A-Z sequence. In Synthetic Phonics it is crucial that a sequence of letters and sounds is taught in an order that most quickly allows learners to use their phonic knowledge and skills to read and write. So in Pip’s Phonics we teach s, i, t followed by p, a, n so that many simple consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words can be read early on.

Pip’s Phonics takes the best of Synthetic Phonics teaching and combines it with the very best of English language teaching.

Why choosePip’s Phonics? The content in Pip’s

Phonics is meaningful and appropriate to young learners of English in terms of characters, themes,

vocabulary and language structures.

Every level of Pip’s Phonics is accompanied

by carefully written Reading Books which offer children tiny steps of ensured success on

the road to independent reading.

i-flashcards

The flashcards are available on the Pip’s Phonics i-book and can be projected or printed out. They are divided into four different types:

Jingle flashcards

The jingle appears on one side and the corresponding image on the other. This is ideal when listening to the jingle or as a quick visual reminder of the letter and sound.

Sound flashcards

These are used for learning the letters and sounds. On one side we see the grapheme in both capital and small letter, on the other an image which helps to fix the sound in the children’s mind.

A work pane for the sound flashcards is also provided. Drag the letters to form words to help with reading and writing development. You can form as many words as you can think of! Click on each letter to hear individual sounds too.

Picture flashcards

Each sound has four picture flashcards to help reinforce the sound as well as some of the vocabulary.

Decodable word cards

A collection of CVC (consonant – vowel – consonant) words which children will be able to read after learning the corresponding sounds. It is important that children can read and pronounce these words even if they do not know exactly what they mean.

Jingles

The jingles are catchy little songs to help reinforce the sounds. Each one has been recorded in a variety of ways: as a chant, spoken, at natural speed and also fast in order to suit all learning needs. They are taught with actions to promote TPR (total physical response) and one of these actions is then used as a memory device. The range of actions also practises fine and gross motor skills.

Pip’s Phonicsi-book

An exciting classroom tool which integrates all the Pip’s Phonics teaching and learning materials into one single format to make lesson planning easy. This fully interactive resource provides you with alternative and innovative ways to approach the course content. Use it on the interactive whiteboard (IWB) to really bring learning alive in the classroom!

The Pip’s Phonics i-book contains the Student’s Book, the Teacher’s Resource Book, interactive flashcards and pop-outs as well as the Readers. Audio material and teacher’s notes are available at the click of a button. Quick links to video material which clearly illustrate how to pronounce each sound, together with the animated grapheme guides to show letter formation are the perfect visual aid to support your Phonics teaching.

The Pip’s Phonics i-book also offers a printing option for selected material.

Use the Richmond i-tools to personalize your i-book! By using the Richmond i-tools you can easily add your own material for the classroom, stress the important points of a sound or activity or get the children to interact directly with the material. Remember you can save all your teaching sessions too!

Direct access to Gill’s pronunciation guide videos

The Pip’s Phonics i-book includes a complete teacher-friendly user’s guide, accessible from the main menu screen, which provides lots of extension ideas to work with the resources in a different way. These extra ideas are presented as animations to make activity demonstration really clear for you and your class.

Following the suggestions in the user’s guide will

make the experience of teaching Phonics even more enjoyable!

Pip’s PhonicsAction FriezeThe Pip’s Phonics Action Frieze is a useful tool to help the children remember the sounds using TPR (total physical response). The actions presented on the Pip’s Phonics Action Frieze are based on the course jingles and they promote fine and gross motor skill development as well as serving as a fantastic mnemonic for learning the sounds in a fun way.

In order to maximize learning opportunities, all the action pictures can be both projected individually on the IWB and printed in full colour or as a line-drawing. Each sound can be viewed with or without the corresponding letter(s). The audio for each sound is also available at the click of a button!

1. Click on the action(s) to

select it

2. Click on the arrow in the

middle of the screen

3. Your selection will appear in the

“My Action Frieze” box

Change the order of the actions

• Use the Pip’s Phonics Action Frieze on the IWB to introduce each new sound and action.

• Print each action out as you learn the sound and build up a poster for your class to revisit regularly.

• Print the line-drawing version to get the children to colour the actions and create their own action booklet to take home and share with their parents. Full instructions on how to do each action are provided on the back.

Readers

Each level of Pip’s Phonics is accompanied by a set of Readers written by the course author to ensure the correct progression to independent reading.

The Pip’s Phonics Readers feature the course characters and are the perfect tool to practise reading in a meaningful way.

The language has also been chosen so that children whose first language is not English can understand them.

Pop-outs

These pre-punched cards help to consolidate the learning in a fun, hands-on way. Children can use their creativity while at the same time reinforcing their memorisation of the sounds. Don’t forget to try the interactive Pop-outs we have prepared for the IWB. They are great fun!
