My Month

Background

Future Plans

CALEB PARKER Bear Valley Bible Institute

I was born in Grants Pass, Oregon. I moved around California and Oregon, and eventually to Wyoming throughout my time in High School. I am 18 years old and I decided to attend the Bear Valley Bible Institute straight out of High School. My parents and siblings currently live in Wyoming. I have one older sister, a younger sister and a younger brother.

My future plans at the time are very undecided. This school thus far has influenced my life with a stronger desire to serve the Lord. I have grown such a strong passion for photography and content creation. I see this as such a huge opportunity for evangelism and ministry. Somehow I want to combine those two passions together to reach out to people and continue to spread the gospel.

Hello brothers and sisters! I am thankful for your willingness and sacrifice in partnering with me through this journey. It has been a challenging month but very beneficial. The quarter ended and I spent my break week in California and had a great time. I came back and we started a new quarter. My classes consist of: Hermeneutics, United Kingdom, Wisdom Literature, Greek 3, and Denominational Doctrines. The classes have been really good and I could say it has been my favorite quarter in terms of classes. I have really been able to enjoy class time and learn a lot through the classes and the great instructors. I look forward to the rest of the quarter in learning more on these courses. I have struggled lately in my spiritual life and I want to extend that to my brothers and sisters who are supporting me to ask for your prayers. I have gone through extreme highs and lows in this school and I pray that I can accomplish what God has planned for me. I thank you for the sacrifices you have made to help me through this school. Continue striving and longing for God as I will as well!

Servant in Christ, Caleb Parker

Loving and Hating Instruction

Whoever loves instruction loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid. – Proverbs 12.1

I do not know of anyone who would disagree with this proverb except for the one who hates correction! If you want to know, you have to receive instruction. Yet, in the process of learning and doing what you have learned, you will make mistakes, and that brings on correction. Correction is not a personal attack, but simply a course correction. It is like driving a car. The car will not stay straight but will need for you to turn the steering wheel slightly to keep it in the lane. That is what instruction and correction does for us.

Are You a Bore? “A bore is a man who deprives you of solitude without providing you with company.” – Gian Vincenzo Gravina

Still Feel Young? “As for me, except for an occasional heart attack, I feel as young as I ever did.” – Robert Benchley

Who Is Normal? “The only normal people are the ones you don’t know very well.” – Joe Ancis

Looking Cool to Our World? “There’s nothing Christians can do to appear ‘cool’ to the postmodern crowd. Trying to do so only makes us look fool-ish…A community of transformed be-lievers—radiant, humble, and holy—will

have more impact than any smiley face ad campaign, no matter what the cul-ture.” – Frederica Mathewes-Green

Heaven and Atheism Stephen Hawking: “Heaven is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark.” John Lennox: “Atheism is a fairy story for those afraid of the light.”

Beth-Shemesh: House of the Sun An archaeological dig in Israel

Denise Fry read an article from Biblical Archaeology Review (January/February 1997, pages 42–77) that said, “Beth-Shemesh is a border town, located at the meeting point of three of the most important ancient civilizations in Palestine—the Canaan-ites, the Israelites and the Philistines—whose borders frequently shifted. “Beth-Shemesh means ‘House of the Sun,’ probably re-flecting the fact that a Canaanite temple to the sun god once graced the city. “Located about midway between the Mediter-ranean and Jerusalem, the site sits high on the south bank of the Nahal Sorek. This places Beth-Shemesh in the foothills of Judah known as the Shephelah, between the Mediterranean coastal plain and the hill country of central Canaan.5 Beth-Shemesh lies opposite Zorah, Samson’s birthplace, and from the site we can look down the Valley of Sorek all the way to Timnah (Tel Batash), where Samson was smitten with a Philistine girl whom he insisted on marrying despite his parents’ objections (Judges 14:1–3).”
