For Director Use Only
Rosewood High School Concert Choir
MWF 3rd Period Choir Room
Instructor: Ms. Valerie McDougal Phone: (843) 251-6922 Office: Choir Room Email: [email protected]
Office Hours: MWF 2nd period; TTh 4th period
Prerequisite:
Participation in Concert Choir does not require an audition, but a voice placement/interview with the instructor is necessary. Students who have already enrolled should complete their placement interview by the end of the second week of class; students who have not yet enrolled should complete their interview before they register.
Course Objectives:
To develop techniques of healthy vocal production and expressive choral singing.
To study and perform a broad range of choral literature from all styles and periods of music history.
To learn about historical context and performance practice as it relates to choral music.
To participate in departmental concerts and additional performance opportunities as they arise.
To contribute to a positive ensemble environment that includes cooperation, enthusiasm, discipline, and personal accountability.
Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Demonstrate knowledge of forms of creative expression.
Demonstrate an understanding of accomplishments in the arts.
Experience forms of creative expression and accomplishments in the arts.
Attendance Policy- Rehearsals:
Participation in a choir is like being on a sports team; it is based on group effort/teamwork and
instructor feedback, and the absence of one student impacts the rest of the group. Therefore,
attendance and participation by every member is critical to the success of any choir. The following
attendance policy will be strictly enforced- no exceptions!
Two absences from regular rehearsals are allowed, excused or unexcused. All subsequent absences will
lower the rehearsal portion of your final grade by 8 points unless appropriate documentation is
provided and if they are made up. The only acceptable make-up for a choral absence is an individual
rehearsal session, for the length of the class missed, that is done via sound files provided or is recorded
and submitted to the instructor. A student who misses more than five rehearsals will not pass the course
Being on time is equally important; coming in late disrupts the attention and flow of the class. Tardies will be handled as follows: three tardies of ten minutes or less will equal one absence, and two tardies of more than ten minutes will equal one absence. Attendance Policy- Performances:
The ultimate purpose of a music ensemble is preparation for performance, so a students participation is
meaningless, even detrimental, to the rest of the group if a performance is missed. Therefore,
attendance of all departmental concerts is required; missing a departmental performance for any
reason other than hospitalization or death in immediate family (appropriate documentation of either
is required) will lower the concert portion of your final grade by 20 points. Tardies to performances of
less than 5 minutes to performances will lower your final grade by 5 points; 5-10 minutes by 8 points;
more than 10 minutes by 10 points. Departmental concert dates are listed below.
Other performances may be scheduled during the semester; you will be given as much notice as possible
and are expected to attend unless your absence has been approved in advance by the instructor. If your
absence is approved in advance, you may perform a make-up assignment given by the instructor in
order to not lower your final grade; this may be a written project, a choral library task, ushering a
departmental concert, or attending and critiquing a departmental or outside concert. If you do not make
up the absence, or if it is unexcused/not approved in advance, it will lower the concert portion of your
final grade by 20 points.
Tour:
Participation in an annual recruitment tour, alternating or combined with Chamber Choir and/or the
symphonic band, is sponsored by the school and is a required component of Concert Choir. You are
expected to make any arrangements necessary in order to travel with the group on the established
dates. An unexcused absence from a tour performance will count the same as absence from a
departmental concert.
Final Exam- Graduation:
Your final exam is your final concert!
Dress Rehearsals:
Because it is an onstage rehearsal, with any guest instrumentalists, and when riser/seating formation,
recording levels, and other technical issues are addressed, attendance of dress rehearsals is equally
critical and therefore also required; missing a dress rehearsal for any reason other than hospitalization
or death in immediate family (appropriate documentation of either is required) will lower the concert
portion of the final grade by 20 points. Tardies to dress rehearsals of less than 5 minutes to
performances will lower your final grade by 5 points; 5-10 minutes by 8 points; more than 10 minutes by
10 points. Dress rehearsal dates are listed below.
Course Evaluation:
Rehearsal Attendance/Participation: 40 pts. A= 90-100 pts. C= 70-74 pts.
Voice Tests/Score Marking: 20 pts. B+=85-89 D+=65-69
Concert/Dress Attendance: 40 pts. B=80-84 D= 60-64
C+=75-79 F= 0-59
Course Materials and Requirements:
You will be given a packet of music at no charge to you, provided you return these items at the appointed time. If you lose the music, you will be charged $25 for replacement costs.
You will be provided a black, 3-ring binder notebook for use in all concerts. put your name on your folder.
The only attitude that will be tolerated is a positive one. Be respectful, helpful, polite, peaceful, and loving. If you have a question, ask it in a loving way.
Do not depend on another person in your section. Use your own ears, eyes, and mind.
When I am rehearsing other sections, pay attention to what I am doing with that section as you may have similar material or a similar vocal problem that needs addressing. If you have problems, comments, or concerns about programming or logistics, please talk to me AFTER the rehearsal or during the break, not before or during
Please bring a pencil to class and mark your music! Your music will be checked at the voice tests for markings.
Please be respectful of the rehearsal- phones off, no chatting, food, gum, or drinks (except for bottled water).
There are no written tests or assignment, but, before each concert, you will be tested orally on your knowledge of the music. You will sign up for a 10-minute individual voice test with me and be expected to demonstrate to an acceptable standard correct notes, rhythms, dynamics, phrasing/ breathing, articulation, and pronunciation. Each voice test is worth 10 points of your final grade and will be graded as follows: 0-2 errors=10 pts; 3-4 errors= 8 pts; 5-6 errors=6 pts; 7-8 errors=4 pts; 9-10 errors=2 pts; over 10 errors=0 pts.
Concert Attire:

lower the rehearsal portion of your final grade by 8 points unless appropriate documentation is
provided and if they are made up.
Tardies to performances of
less than 5 minutes to performances will lower your final grade by 5 points; 5-10 minutes by 8 points;
more than 10 minutes by 10 points.

There are no written tests or assignment, but, before each concert, you will periodically be tested in class on your knowledge of the music. You will also sign up for a 10-minute individual voice test with me and be expected to demonstrate to an acceptable standard on Concert Choir music.
