We’llthendriveouttooneofthenearbywineriesinChile’sMaipoValley,oneofthecountry’sprominentwine-producingregionstuckedintothefoothillsoftheAndes.Ourdestinationisabeautifulandsprawlingestatewithanimpressivemuseum,anditdatesbackto1880,whenvinesandwinemakerswerebroughtinfromFrance.Herewe’llhavelunchintheirfinerestaurantandatouroftheirwinemakingprocessfollowedbyawinetasting.Thecellarsherearenationalmonuments,builtbyFrenchengineersin1875.AfterwardsweheadbacktoSantiago.Dinnerisopenthisevening,andthereareagoodnumberofrestaurantsinourLastarrianeighborhoodaswellasothernotableonesscatteredaroundthecity.Breakfast,LunchincludedDays3-5—AtacamaDesertOnDay3weflyfromSantiagotoCalama(2hours)andthenmaketheoverlandjourney(1¼hours)uptoSanPedrodeAtacama.ThenearlysurrealaridnorthofChileseemslikesomethingfromanotherplanet.Itssandandrockformationscreatearemarkablymoonlikelandscape.ThisveryhighdesertareawasanoutlieroftheInkaandearlierAndeancivilizations—anditisuniqueandverybeautiful.TheSpaniardslefttheirownmonumentsascolonialchurches,butindigenousllamaandalpacaherdershaveoutlastedthem.TheregionistheclosestChileancounterparttoPeruandBoliviaintermsofsurvivingindigenouscommunities.HereinChile’sNorteGrande(“GreatNorth”),thealtiplanoorhighsteppeexceeds13,000feetinelevationinsomeareas,punctuatedwithsoaringvolcanoesofnearly20,000feet.WearebasedforthreenightsacoupleofmilesoutsidethetownofSanPedrodeAtacama,withapopulationofjustabout2,000,to
