Carnage on the hillFIREFIGHTERS cut the roof off a woman’s undamaged car to rescue two people she gave shelter to following an accident.

Janice Dunlop narrowly avoided the accident herself when a lorry overturned on the A27 near Arundel, colliding with two cars.

She allowed the pair to wait in her car but firefighters cut the roof off after the two complained of neck pains and paramedics needed to move them.

Mrs Dunlop said she is still unsure whether insurers will replace the car.

She said the accident on Sunday was “complete carnage”.

Anorak CornerDid you know? A taster of Chichester facts and figures...

Chichester Cathedral and the surrounding area was the set location for “In a Monastery Garden,” an episode of the U.K. murder mystery TV series Rosemary & Thyme

Now in our 50th yearOne all inclusive, en suite vacancy is now available

in our central Chichester house.

Continued from page 1 “When the top came off I couldn’t look, I hid my eyes. It was a very loved car in our family, it was heartbreaking.”

A spokesman for the South East Coast Ambulance Service said: “While the pair were sheltering in the car they developed neck pain.

“Paramedics explored every opportunity to get them out of the vehicle. However, in the end they had to get the fire service to cut the roof off and take them out on back boards.

“We can only apologise to Mrs Dunlop for the inconvenience of that.”

He added that no one was seriously injured in the collision.

Parking fees set to riseTHE COST to park in Chichester city centre is to increase after changes have been agreed this week by Chichester District Council’s Cabinet to parking charges in the district.

Small increases are to be introduced in Chichester city centre car parks from 1 April 2013 to cover rising costs. For more than 85% of all users this means paying just 10p or less extra to park. Someone staying for two hours in the Avenue de Chartres car park has gone up 10p from £1.40 to £1.50, and even staying for the whole day has only gone up by 20p.

In order to further improve its services to residents the council has introduced a new 20 minute tariff costing 30p in its Chichester city centre car parks.

Charges have been frozen in Midhurst and Petworth car parks for the next year and prices will also be frozen for all season ticket holders across the district. Sunday charges in Chichester city’s long stay car parks will remain at the current levels.

A small increase has been agreed in the parking charges at Bosham car park and a new six hour rate has been introduced. The council has also introduced a flexible monthly permit that will make it easier for seasonal boat users to park in the car park rather than in nearby residential areas.

Meanwhile, the council will look again at changes to charges in its coastal car parks – Selsey, The Witterings and Bracklesham – and a decision will be made in due course.

The changes follow a detailed review of and consultation on car park pricing structures by the council.

Councillor Myles Cullen, Cabinet Member for Economy, Tourism and Car Parks, says: “As everyone is aware there are unprecedented financial pressures on councils up and down the country. No one likes increases in car parking charges but these small changes will mean that we can cover rising costs without hitting the pockets

of motorists too hard.“We realise this is a difficult time for

everyone economically and so we have tried to keep any increases as small as possible. A 10p rise for over 85% of users is most reasonable. We know ‘one size does not fit all’ and so we have decided not to make any changes to car parking charges in Midhurst and Petworth for a further year. We are also taking a bit longer to consider some options for changes to charges in our coastal car parks.

“Even with these modest increases, our car parks will remain some of the cheapest on the south coast and are still very low compared to nearby competing centres.”

Chichester could lose Jessops

CHICHESTER is facing another major loss as Jessops stands on the brink of administration.

The future of employees at Sussex's seven Jessops stores, including Chichester, hangs in the balance as it was reported the company is in administration.

The chain - Britain's only specialist nationwide camera retailer with nearly 200 stores - reportedly announced earlier this week that 15 of its stores would close this year.

It means workers at the store on Chichester’s East Street will be nervously awaiting the news to discover if their jobs are at risk.

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) has been appointed as administrators.

Jessops, which has its headquarters in Leicester, has suffered in recent years from online competition and the boom in camera phones, which has hit demand for digital cameras.

CHILD BENEFIT CUTSRemoving child benefit payments from families who are comfortably off is correct, obviously. The opposition have behaved daftly; they should have asked why it took two years. They can’t as the Government will reply “If it’s so obvious why didn’t you do it when you could have?” And there’s no answer to that.

FLOODINGWith all the floods, I notice sandbags outside front doors in Lavant, for example. My question is do they work? Down in Bosham the folk have built brick walls about a foot high in front of their doors, and I think this might be the future.

WINTER ALLOWANCEGiving £300 to British pensioners who spend the winter in Spain is a bit much too. Mind, there are costs involved in separating the deserving from the undeserving.

WARNINGI find myself listening to economic “experts” on TV and the radio; financial gurus, bank executives, economists. I also find myself asking why we should listen to them since none of them recognised we were heading into a disaster.

RECOGNITIONHow do we manage to recognise people we haven’t seen in ages? At Bills in the Butter Market (brilliant in case you wondered, fantastic

staff) a man in front of me in the queue turned out to be someone I hadn’t seen in 30 years. He had grown a massive beard and white handlebar moustache, and was underneath a big floppy hat. He was wittering to the party he was with and I said “Len!” and he was bemused, flattered etc. How did I recognise him? It was down to the fact he was being the Len he was 30 years ago; cheerful, vague, something indefinable that defined him, if that makes any sense.

CHANGEDo we change, as people? Do we grow? We try to. Hence New Year resolutions. Do we learn from our mistakes? I don’t. Why? Because, just like you dear reader, I never make any! It’s the others.

CONSERVATIONThe Chichester Conservation Area Advisory Committee are meeting next week to discuss whether twentieth century buildings are worth

saving. It’s a good question. Those 1960’s buildings are very stand-out aren’t they? I’m thinking about the Festival Theatre for example. Will people be shoring it up like it was Shakespeare’s Globe in 500 years’ time? Dunno.

JOGGERSWalking into town on Wednesday I passed a jogger. Meaning, I overtook. It was embarrassing.

JOKEThis is Barry Cryer’s latest.A husband was abroad on business and his wife was carrying on with a fellow. The husband came home and turned the key in the door. The wife told the fellow to hide in the bathroom. The husband found his wife in the bedroom and told her to stay there while he showered. In the bathroom he found the fellow, barefoot, up to his neck. “Who are you?” he demanded. The man started swatting a rolled up newspaper around and replied “Council.” The husband replied “Council? What are you doing?” The fellow replied “Your wife reported a problem with moths.” The husband replied “Why are you naked?” The fellow replied: “Am I? Damn these moths!”

Providing support sessions in Chichester to family and friends of a drug or alcohol userTHE FESTIVE period can be a difficult time for families and friends affected by a loved one’s drug and/or alcohol use.

Most try to cope as best they can, but for people in Chichester the message from West Sussex County Council’s Drug and Alcohol Action Team is ‘don’t suffer in silence’.

This comes with new support sessions being offered by the Families & Friends Network at the city’s Children and Family Centre, in St James’ Road, on the third Wednesday of every month, between 1pm and 3pm.

People will be able to find out more and have a cup of tea or coffee and cake during the launch on Wednesday, January 16.

It will be able to provide confidential advice, support, information and tips on how to cope with a family member going through this addiction as well as access to a family recovery programme. Sessions are run by volunteers who have experience of these issues and have been trained to provide support and advice.

Christine Field, Cabinet Member for Public Protection, said: “I would whole-heartedly urge anyone affected by these issues to seek help. It isn’t just the person struggling with substance misuse who needs help, but friends and family and we must not forget them.”

Can you give a child a home?PEOPLE WILLING to open their home and help others are being sought across West Sussex this new year to become foster carers.

Foster carers play a vital role in giving a loving and stable home to children in need.

West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Children and Families Peter Evans said: “If you’ve ever thought about giving a child a home and becoming a foster carer, I would urge you to make it your new year’s resolution for 2013.

“By giving a stable and dependable environment to a vulnerable child or young person, foster carers give them an invaluable chance to develop their skills and confidence, to rebuild their lives and fulfil their potential.”

The County Council’s fostering service has a particular need for foster carers that can help siblings and/or older children.

Monthly drop-in sessions will be taking place across West Sussex in 2013, giving residents the chance to come along and meet members of the fostering team and foster carers to have an informal chat about whether fostering is right for them.

Peter added: “We don’t just need people to be good parents, we’re looking for people who are patient, energetic, with a good sense of humour and who will treat children and young people as individuals.”

Foster carers receive a comprehensive support package from the Council, including on-going training and financial allowances to meet the needs of the children and young people in their care.

To find out more about the many types of fostering available, or for the 2013 fostering drop-in session dates, visit the website at www.westsussex.gov.uk/fostering or call 01403 229333.

New Sussex Police and Crime Plan won’t cost taxpayers moreTHE NEWLY-FORMED Sussex Police and Crime Panel will meet today (Friday January 11) to begin one of the major tasks it was set up to carry out. It will review the draft Police and Crime Plan drawn up by the Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne.

One key element of the plan is the precept – the amount the Commissioner wants to raise from council tax - for the coming financial year. The draft plan proposes no change, leaving the precept the same as last year at £138.42 for a Band D property. The Police and Crime Panel is being asked to agree the precept, although it is not required to approve the budget.

The Panel, which includes councillors from each of the 15 local authorities in East and West Sussex plus two

lay members, oversees public accountability and transparency. It is being asked for its views on the priorities outlined in the plan, titled Safer In Sussex 2013/14. Those views will become part of the final Police and Crime Plan.

“This is the first-ever Police and Crime Plan for Sussex, so it is vital that we put forward the view of residents from all over Sussex,” said Panel Chairman Brad Watson OBE.

The Plan will incorporate the views of other organisations including businesses and Community Safety Partnerships, victims and witnesses, the Sussex Criminal Justice Board, the Safer Roads Partnership, and parish councils.

Residents asked to be vigilant after series of garage break insPOLICE are warning residents to be vigilant about keeping their garages and outbuildings secure after a series of break-ins across the Arun District since the new year.

Between 7am on January 4 and 7pm on January 5 a summerhouse at a property on Ellasdale Road, Bognor was broken into and

gardening equipment was stolen. Also on January 5 between 2.30pm and 7pm food was stolen from a freezer in a garage on Bradlond Close. Both the garage and a door to the summerhouse were insecure.

On January 7 there were four break-ins to garages. At 7.50pm in Gospond Road, Barnham, the occupant heard a noise and

disturbed a man in the garage. The suspect had forced the lock on a garage door and moved large drills, batteries and cables but nothing had been stolen.

Between 8.30am and 3.45pm on Lidsey Road, Woodgate a padlock on a car port and garden gate had been forced, giving access to a garage where two chainsaws

were stolenDuring the early evening in Annandale

Avenue, Bognor the handle was unscrewed on a garage door but nothing was taken.

On Chalcraft Lane in Bognor between 9.30am and 11.30am various tools were stolen from a garage, including chainsaws, disk cutters and hedge cutters.

County Council announces £8.25 million ‘Operation Watershed’ initiative to tackle flooding

A £8.25 MILLION fund to pay for flood related schemes was announced today by West Sussex County Council.

The money will pay for highway drainage and environmental improvements in areas of the county that have been the worst affected in recent months.

The announcement comes after prolonged heavy rain over the Christmas period and the publication last month of a major report into the June 2012 floods.

The County Council will now start drawing up a list of schemes with priority being given to areas that have seen repeat flooding.

Further details will be given over the coming months. The fund is designed to:• Fix highway drainage hotspots• Contribute to schemes with partners where the drainage system needs improvements• Support community solutions including working with owners of private ditches• Restore the highways network that has been damaged by the winter weather.

Council Leader Louise Goldsmith said: “We promised that the report into the June floods was just the beginning, and would be translated into action. In view of the weather in recent weeks, there is an even greater urgency.

“Now we have the finance in place we can look in detail at schemes that will reduce the impact of future flooding on home owners, our business community and road users.

“In the first instance we will be focusing on areas that have suffered repeat flooding to ensure that this money is well invested, and has significant benefits.”

The initiative will be known as ‘Operation

Watershed’.The County Council will also be working

closely with other agencies responsible for aspects of drainage including the Environment Agency and Southern Water.

Work has already started on a key recommendation of the June flood report – a detailed register showing exactly who is responsible for all aspects of drainage in West Sussex.

The County Council is also urging private landowners with responsibility for ditches to take action to ensure they are well maintained and regularly cleared.

Louise has also given details of how the drainage and environmental projects will be financed.

She said: “Essentially the money is coming from our reserves.

“We have always stressed that we need a healthy level of reserves to meet the long term costs of a wide variety of schemes that we are already committed to deliver, and ones we know we will be delivering in future.

“But, we have always stressed that we also need reserves to fulfil our obligations to residents during emergency situations.

“I am sure everyone will agree that the impact of the weather we experienced last year is just such an emergency.”

Earlier this week, West Sussex Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport Pieter Montyn announced it was launching extra pothole patrols between now and the end of March to cope with the increased number of road defects caused by the weather.

He said: “This new and major investment will be really welcome, and meetings to look at the first priorities have already been arranged.”

Nearly £10,000 raised at Christmas

THANKS to the great generosity of the people of Chichester this was the sum raised by local charities at the Tree of Goodwill at the Cross in December. At a special Thank You Lunch held at the Park hotel, Richard Plowman, Vice President of the Rotary Club of Chichester, paid tribute to the many individuals and organisations that had made this possible. He also emphasised the Clubs gratitude to those who had been unable to attend because of other commitments. Over twenty local choirs had sung at the Cross adding to the festive atmosphere and boosting donations. Some had literally been ‘Singing in the Rain’ whilst others shivered in temperatures as low as minus 3C.

West Dean Estate (The Edward James Foundation) sponsored the excellent Christmas tree which was erected with the help of foresters David Laker and Darren Norris and with equipment loaned

by Jewson’s and Beaver Tool Hire. Support and assistance was also given by Chichester City and District Councils, WSCC Highways Department, John and Barbara Castle (roasted chestnuts and security), The Boys Club, Sign Management, Chichester Police, Iceland and Tesco supermarkets.

The charities that benefited were:Canine Partners, Friends of Chichester

Hospital, St Wilfred’s Hospice, Hope and Homes for Children, The Multiple Sclerosis Society, Parkinson’s Disease Society, Snowdrop, Contact 88 and Inner Wheel together with the three Chichester Rotary Clubs charitable funds.

The tree of goodwill is organised by the Rotary Club of Chichester and supported by the members of Priory and Harbour Rotary Clubs whose representatives were also present at the Lunch.

Gap between closure of The Grange and opening of new centre will be kept to a minimumRESIDENTS of Midhurst and the surrounding areas are being reassured that the time between the closure of The Grange Centre and the opening of the new multi million pound community and leisure centre will be kept to a minimum.

Chichester District Council and the Trustees of the Grange Association are also meeting with clubs and organisations that use The Grange in January to provide them with the latest information.

“We are working with the Grange Centre Trustees to limit the time between the closure of the old centre and the opening of the new centre. This has always been the case. This type of project is never easy and at this early stage it is very difficult to provide residents with an exact opening date – which is why we have said that it will open in early 2014. It only takes a bit of snow, or severe weather, to add additional weeks onto the project. This is the same with any large construction project,” says Cllr Eileen Lintill, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Wellbeing and Community Services at Chichester District Council.

“We always had an agreement with

The Grange Centre Trustees that the old building would close two weeks before the completion of the construction of the new centre. This was so that any current staff moving across to the new centre can transfer two weeks before the completion of the new building. From that date the staff will receive training and help to equip and clean the building prior to opening. The demolition of The Grange Centre will follow in order to provide additional car parking spaces at the earliest opportunity.

“The Grange Centre Trustees were given a two year short term lease from 4 September 2012 so that they can continue to operate the current facilities until two weeks before the construction of the new centre is complete. This was arranged in order to minimise any disruption to the customers of the current Grange Centre.

“As we are in the early stages of the building contract it is difficult to predict the actual completion date, but currently the contractors have provided a date of 18 November 2013. This is subject to weather conditions and extensions to the contract. Groups and users of the centre have been invited to a meeting in January where we will provide them with the most up to date information.”

Neuter now to stop unwanted spring kittensCat and

Rabbit Rescue Centre

DELIGHTFUL NEWS: Marigold & Pansy and KM62-12 have New Year homes.

Help with neutering costs is available from The Cat and Rabbit Rescue if your male or female cat/kitten is more than 4 months old and has not been neutered because you are struggling to meet the costs of taking your pet (or stray) to a vet.

It needs to be emphasised that a female cat is not improved by having one set of kittens. In fact, having kittens under the age of a year (when really the female is still a kitten) robs the mother of the fun of her own kittenhood and can be stressful. Neutering now will help reduce the problem of unwanted pregnant cats and kittens which overwhelmed Rescues last summer and left them unable to help! So please call us if necessary now.

Selected Cats waiting for a home • Charley (1 year) and her three 6-month

old female kittens are mostly white, with small grey/black marks and all friendly and wanting attention.

• KM107-12 and KM108-12 are friendly, black, 10 month old kittens. Both neutered

and ready to leave for a home together. • KF43-12 is a lovely, friendly, black

and white, neutered 9 month old female kitten who came into rescue last May due to bereavement. She has been neutered and is desperate for a home.

• Rosetta is a friendly, confident, grey and white 1 year old female purr-factory who came into rescue last September. She is ready to go to a home now her kittens are independent.

The Rescue asks for a minimum donation of £45 for each cat or kitten which includes vaccination, microchipping, and neutering. Free vet insurance for 4 weeks is provided. A younger un-neutered kitten is £70 and a voucher for neutering at The Rescue is supplied. The usual Cat and Rabbit Rescue Adoption Terms and Conditions apply. Visits are strictly by appointment, Tel: 01243 641409.

Waitressing Wisdom

I’M GIVEN pocket money monthly and have an amazing ability to make it last for all of a day or two before I spend the remaining 3 and a half weeks waiting patiently for more to appear. This is why I need jobs: to fund my hungry shopper syndrome. Normally I babysit which is great. Generally you are being paid to sit in a nice family’s house, watch their telly and eat their food, sometimes getting up to soothe a child.

Recently I was offered a waitressing job with some friends. Obviously I accepted as I am tragically without money. It wasn’t too hard and I quickly picked up on some tricks of the trade, like continuously going round smiling and refilling drinks because the more alcohol that circulates the nicer the guests become (and they wonder why teenagers start getting drunk at such a young age).

Be sure to avoid the women who are clearly on a diet and refuse most of the food and a majority of the drink, as every time you offer them a snack they get a bit annoyed. Watch them waste their lives not enjoying that exceptional thing called food WITHOUT comment (I should really write a Waitressing

for Dummies book). Also, only actually eat the food that’s

leftover, not the snacks that are just about to go out to the guests, for fear of your life if you’re caught.

Don’t drop the fork on the floor or spill red wine on the white tablecloth.

When wearing a Santa hat to go with the Christmas vibe, remember to straighten your hair first so that it doesn’t expand and make you look like an electrified elf.

When one of the guests says to you meaningfully ‘Wow, how amazing that you cooked up this entire feast all on your own’ and winks, don’t spend 5 minutes humbly denying that you had any involvement. They know. They were joking. You are literally too stupid for words.

So as you can see, waitressing is clearly my calling. Even if I am a serving failure though, I still get paid. Which means new shoes for Mia, get in.

Make your mark – stand now to become a Youth MPTHERE’S STILL time for West Sussex candidates to come forward for the next UK Youth Parliament elections, which take place in March this year.

West Sussex young people aged between 11 and 19-years-old can stand for the election, and can register their interest online via the Your Space website at www.yourspacewestsussex.co.uk/elections2013. The deadline for nominations is Friday January 18.

West Sussex is covered by four UK Youth Parliament areas. In each area, the two candidates with the most votes are elected as Members of Youth Parliament (MYP) and Deputy MYPs.

The four geographical areas are:• Chichester, West Arun• Crawley, East Grinstead• East Arun, Adur and Worthing• Horsham and Mid Sussex

West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Children and Families Peter Evans said: “Our MYPs represent the views of young people in their constituency and relate to decision makers at local, regional and national levels.

“It’s important that the views of young people are heard and used to inform decisions and the MYPs, together with our West Sussex Youth Cabinet, play a vital role in that.”

There are 500 MYPs nationally. South

East regional meetings are held every two months for West Sussex MYPs to attend. They also have monthly meetings with the West Sussex Youth Cabinet, and go to an annual sitting of all elected MYPs and a day of debate in the House of Commons.

MYPs are fully supported in their work by the County Council’s Youth Support and Development Service.

Those who register their interest in standing for the UK Youth Parliament will receive a candidate pack explaining more about the elections, the Youth Cabinet and information on running an election campaign.

The elections will run from Friday March 1, to Friday March 29, young people will be able to vote via the Your Space website.

To find out more on what being an MYP involves and to register your interest, visit the Your Space website. You can also find out more at www.ukyouthparliament.org.uk.

Sarah and Nick buy their first house at Graylingwell Park thanks to shared ownership AFTER THREE YEARS of both renting and living back at home with parents, Sarah Booker and her partner Nick Martin decided it was time to consider their long term plans, opting for a three-bedroom family house as their first step onto the property ladder. The couple were attracted to the shared ownership scheme by leading affordable housing provider Affinity Sutton, which offered them a brand new home at Graylingwell Park on a part buy/part rent basis, with only a five per cent deposit.

Sarah, 32, and Nick, 28, who both work in marketing, were immediately drawn to the spacious and eco-friendly houses at Graylingwell Park. Nick says: “We did look at other shared ownership developments, but we were attracted by the size of the rooms and the large gardens at Graylingwell.”

After viewing a showhome, Sarah and Nick put down a five per cent deposit of just £4,200. The couple bought a 28 per cent share in a three-bedroom house for £82,600 and they plan to buy more shares in the future and eventually own their property outright. The monthly cost of their new home is around £495 for the mortgage and around £580 subsidised rent on the remaining share of their home and service charges.

The location was important for the couple; they both work on the outskirts of Chichester

and Sarah’s family live close to the town. Nick, who is originally from Waterlooville, only has a 15-minute commute to his work at VHB Herbs, a fresh herb and seedlings supplier, and for Sarah it is a 20-minute cycle ride to her job at Philips Healthcare.

Sarah says: “We wanted to be close to Chichester and Graylingwell Park gave us the best of both worlds; walking distance to the town where we enjoy meeting up with friends but also because it’s set within beautiful and peaceful parkland. It is so close to the coast and surrounding countryside too, it’s perfect for our weekend bike rides.”

Graylingwell Park has recently launched Nightingales, the latest collection of new homes to be built at the former hospital. The outstanding new development, set in 85 acres of extensive parkland and only around a mile from Chichester city centre, has been developed jointly by Linden Homes, Affinity Sutton and the Homes & Communities Agency and is the UK’s largest carbon neutral scheme.

All of the homes are fitted with impressive energy saving features including high levels of insulation and heating and hot water supplied to all homes by a central heat and power plant.

The couple’s transition into their first home has been so successful; they have

now recommended shared ownership to friends and family, and Nick’s cousin is now looking into buying at Graylingwell Park.

Sarah says: “We really enjoy living here

and our friends are always so impressed with our new home. Everything was made so easy by Affinity Sutton - they were really helpful and took the stress away from the whole house-buying process.”

Pallant House Gallery appoints new Director

PALLANT HOUSE GALLERY will soon be welcoming a new face after they announced that Gregory J Perry has been appointed as Director, from 1 February 2013.

Gregory Perry has held the post of Director of Operations and Administration at the National Gallery since October 2009 where he was also a member of the Executive Committee.

Before this senior role in London, Gregory played a leading role in the development and direction of other international cultural institutions including as Executive Director of the Allentown Art Museum in Pennsylvania and Director of the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum, New Jersey.

David Macmillan, Chairman of the

Trustees of Pallant House Gallery said: “All at Pallant House Gallery are delighted that Greg has decided to take up the post of Director. He has extensive and broad-ranging experience on both sides of the Atlantic and will be a marvellous benefit to the Gallery and its fantastic team.”

Gregory Perry said: ‘”It is a privilege to join Pallant House Gallery as its new Director. The Gallery enjoys an excellent reputation for its intelligent exhibitions, its strong collections and its inclusiveness to a variety of audiences. I look forward to working with the staff and supporters to share the rich tradition of British Modernism and contemporary art with visitors from the South East, throughout the UK and internationally.”

Body shop volunteers help at TrustTWENTY-THREE volunteers from the Body Shop in Littlehampton gave up an afternoon of their time to volunteer and support a local West Sussex based charity the Aldingbourne Trust. Keen and motivated volunteers spent their time clearing a large area of hedge row and taking down the old goat house in the Open Farm.

In addition to this, the Body shop volunteers worked hard in the greenhouse dead heading plants, removing weeds and generally helping restore some of the tired plants to their former glory.

Country Centre manager Simon Hutchins was amazed at just how much was achieved in so short a time and said: “I am delighted that the Body Shop staff volunteered their time to help us, they have done a brilliant job!”

Scott Bell the Aldingbourne Trust’s Volunteer Coordinator said: “We have a good relationship with the Body Shop and they have worked closely with the Trust in the past. It provided a great team building opportunity for the Staff of the Body Shop,

whilst helping out the Country Centre on jobs that urgently required attention, and we are grateful for their staff’s help and assistance.”

The group from the Body Shop took the opportunity of looking around the Country Centre and saw first-hand how staff and volunteers encourage adults with learning disabilities to learn and develop a wide range of skills by offering a variety of social enterprises to learn within, such as wood recycling, catering, retail, horticulture and organics and many more.

For more information on the Aldingbourne Trust or if you’re interested in becoming a volunteer please contact Scott Bell on 0784632593 or visit www.aldingbournetrust.co.uk

New Chief Fire Officer for West SussexWEST Sussex has started the year with a new Chief Fire Officer following the appointment of Sean Ruth.

Sean has been Deputy CFO since 2009 and takes over from Max Hood, who is leaving to take up a fire service post in New Zealand.

Sean’s promotion to CFO comes after a career in the Fire and Rescue Service that started as a firefighter in Birmingham with the West Midlands Fire Brigade in 1989.

He transferred to Surrey in 1996 where he operated in a number of roles including community fire safety, training, and operational command.

He was seconded to the Department for Communities and Local Government in 2007, working with the Chief Fire and Rescue Advisor advising Ministers and senior Civil Servants on national fire and rescue policy.

He joined West Sussex after a six month period as interim Deputy Chief with Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue in 2009.

Since joining West Sussex, Sean has played a key role in leading the Service to make improvements in emergency cover arrangements and to invest in training to improve the safety of its firefighters.

The Fire and Rescue Service in West Sussex is a statutory function provided by the County Council and the Chief Fire

Officer role is fully integrated within its management structure.

The CFO is a member of the Chief Executive’s Leadership Team and helps to ensure that firefighters work alongside all other County Council departments to deliver the best possible services to the local community.

Christine Field, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Protection, welcomed Sean’s appointment: “There are pressures and challenges for all public services in the current economic climate but in Sean we have appointed someone with a proven track record of leadership and managing at a strategic level, someone with the right skills, vision, and experience to lead West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service into the future.

“The role that firefighters play is highly valued by the local community so I look forward to working with him and making sure the services we deliver make a real difference to the lives of people in West Sussex.”

The BadThat said, The Impossible isn’t entirely without flaws: for one thing, the acting and dialogue before the wave hits is excruciatingly bad, most notably during a gratingly false-sounding conversation between Watts and McGregor’s characters about whether or not they shut the door properly while they’re on the plane. Similarly, while it’s understandable that the film concentrates on the story of a single family, the net result of that is that you don’t get a sense of the full scale of the tragedy, in which almost 300,000 people were killed.

Worth seeing? The Impossible is a well-made, powerfully emotional drama that pushes all the right buttons. Bring a tsunami’s worth of tissues. Recommended.

table tennis and many more.• Children on the Edge Chichester Half Marathon on Sunday 13 October –the route includes a mixture of road and cross country terrain, starting and ending at Chichester College. The event is organised by Chichester District Council in partnership with local charity Children on the Edge. The charity is dedicated to working on behalf of marginalised and vulnerable children. Enter from April at www.childrenontheedge.org or www.chichester.gov.uk.

Cllr Eileen Lintill, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Wellbeing and Community Services at Chichester District Council, says: “If one of your New Year's resolutions is to get fitter in 2013 then we want to hear from you. These events will enable you to achieve your own personal goal for getting into shape and feeling better about yourself.”

Pop up Pirates of PenzanceTHROUGHOUT December University of Chichester students will be popping up in a range of venues in and around Chichester, promoting their upcoming production of The Pirates of Penzance. The show, which will be playing at the Alexandra Theatre in Bognor Regis from 23-26 January 2013, is set to put a sexy, edgy spin on the Gilbert and Sullivan classic, and will feature camp pirates, glamorous captains and corseted wenches.

In an act of guerilla promotion, and theatrical creative outpouring, the production’s actors and actresses will be performing snippets of the production in a host of local venues. Some performances will be pre-booked others will be spontaneous and delivered in a flash-mob style fashion. Venues earmarked to be involved include the Richmond Arms, Chichester’s ‘cross’, Cloisters, the Old Cross and both Bosham and Birdham marina.

Production manager, director and pop up organiser Lucinda Jeffs said: “This is such an alternative, edgy production of a classic that we wanted the promotion to reflect this too, rather than just promoting via the usual posters and leaflets. The costumes are so utterly flamboyant they are sure to create a stir; we hope to descend in a flurry of corsets, boots and breeches, and then be off again, leaving people wanting more.”

The upcoming production of The Pirates of Penzance hopes to enjoy the same success as last year’s production of The Marriage of Figaro which attracted an audience of over

500 in its four day run.Event details:Date: 23-26 January 2013Time: 7:30pmVenue: Alexandra Theatre, Bognor RegisPrice: £10 adult £5 NUSHow to book:Contact the Alexandra Theatre Box OfficeTel: 01243 861010Online: www.alexandratheatre.co.uk

New campaign aims to help us eat healthier mealsA NEW campaign to expose the hidden nasties in everyday foods is launched today, after a survey highlighted widespread ignorance in the country about the food people eat.

The new campaign - launched on January 7 by Public Health Minister Anna Soubry - is aimed at helping people to be 'food smart'.

A recent survey undertaken revealed that more than half (58 per cent) of people do not know that there are 11 lumps of sugar in a can of cola.

And more than half - 55 per cent - of people are not aware that a large takeaway pepperoni pizza has twice the recommended maximum daily intake of saturated fat.

Graphic new advertising from Change4Life reveals a shocking 17 sugar cubes in a bottle of cola and more than a wine glass of fat in a large pizza.

The Change4Life adverts, which are made by Aardman, the creators of Wallace and Gromit, are launched in conjunction with a range of food manufacturers and ITV which will host the first ever health-focussed ad break.

Ms Soubry said: “Making healthier, balanced meals on a budget can be a challenge for families. This new Change4Life campaign offers families free healthy recipes and money off those much

needed cupboard essentials to encourage everyone to try healthy alternatives

“England has one of the highest rates of obesity in Europe with over 60 per cent of adults and a third of ten and 11-year-olds overweight or obese.

“We want to make it easy for everyone to keep track of what they eat and make healthier choices. That is why we are also developing a simple and clear system for front of pack labelling that everyone can use.”

The ‘ad takeover’, which will air during prime-time in Coronation Street, marks the launch of a new year healthy eating drive and will feature ads from Asda, Quorn, Uncle Ben’s, the Co-Operative Food and Cravendale.

There will also be hundreds of offers on healthier products at more than 1,000 Asda, Aldi and the Co-Operative Food stores across the country to give a helping hand with the cost of kitchen cupboard basics.

Everything you ever wanted to know about Coffee (but were too afraid to ask)WE USE ABOUT 10kg of coffee every week which contains about 100,000 coffee beans and is enough to make about 700 cups.

When we selected our coffee we tasted many different blends, and were interested to discover that the biggest factor affecting the taste of the coffee was the skill of the person making it. (The barista).

Our blend uses beans from all over the world: 25% Brazil, 25% Costa Rica, 20% India and 30% Ethiopia and uses the two main types of beans in the proportion 80% Arabica to 20% Robusta.

Arabica beans have an intense coffee flavour but are quite delicate, so 100% Arabica coffee is usually used in cafetieres. Robusta beans add caffeine and oil and are able to withstand the incredible heat and pressure of an espresso machine.

We use a heavy-duty grinder which has to be adjusted to make sure it grinds the beans to just the right size: too small and the coffee goes as hard as concrete

and the water will not go through, too large and the coffee ends up weak and unpleasant like dirty dishwater.

It is the oil in the coffee beans that forms the pale silky ‘crema’ foam on top of an espresso. If the grind is the right size you will get a nice thick crema. A few grains of sugar dropped onto the crema should be supported for a couple of seconds before falling through.

Tips for the perfect cappuccino:• Aim for equal thirds of coffee, milk and foam.• Make sure the cup is nice and hot.• A round-bellied stainless steel milk jug works best for frothing.• We like to use semi-skimmed milk.• Start with the steam wand at the bottom of the jug to heat the milk, then bring it up to the surface to create the foam.• Stop when the outside of the jug is too hot to touch.• If you like a sprinkling of chocolate, try using a stencil to give your cappuccino a designer look.

Enjoy!

Health & Beauty

Denise Kelly

I SEE SO many people with a variety of symptoms coming to my clinic, but one very simple thing I would urge everyone to look at is mineral deficiency. Don’t worry too much about taking away the bad stuff initially as you will feel deprived. Just concentrate on pumping your body full of goodies and you will soon be craving less of the junk. It’s simple, it will make your brain and your body wake up and its everyday foods that can make all the difference.

So what is potassium good for?Potassium is an essential nutrient used

to maintain fluid and electrolyte balance in the body. A deficiency in potassium causes many things such as fatigue, irritability, and hypertension (increased blood pressure). Also it can cause inflammation of the tissues, such a rheumatoid arthritis, which is both debilitating and a classic auto immune system disease. If you have a potassium deficiency you are at a higher risk of stroke, osteoporosis, infertility, fractures and skin lesions and kidney stones. Unless you are on dialysis, or have a special condition, overdose of potassium from natural sources is nearly impossible. However it is possible to consume too much potassium via potassium salts which can lead to nausea, vomiting, and even in extreme cases cardiac arrest. Potassium from

natural food sources, like the ones mentioned below, are considered safe and healthy. Adding more potassium to your diet could act as an effective pain relief reducing horrid symptoms of discomfort and giving you added energy as a bonus!

Foods such as white beans, dark leafy greens, sweet and white potatoes, dried apricots, squash, avocados, asparagus, green beans, raisins and bananas should be in abundance in your daily regime.

Athletes and people who love to exercise also need to make sure they are getting enough to replace what is lost from muscle during exercise and the smaller amount lost in sweat. Low potassium can cause muscle cramping and cardiovascular irregularities. Eating foods high in potassium can prevent these symptoms. One cup of freshly squeezed

Potassium – The Modern Deficiency

orange juice, a banana or a potato is sufficient to replace the potassium lost during one to two hours of hard exercise. Sport drinks are poor sources of potassium and should be avoided as can cause too much stress on the body due to increased sugar levels. Natural is always best as the body knows exactly what to do with it!

So, make sure you are getting enough and start the year as you mean to go on!

Money worries maxing out Britain's stress levelsMONEY worries are the biggest cause of concern for British consumers, with 16.8 million feeling stressed out by their finances every single day, according to research from MoneySupermarket.

Research by the comparison site revealed a third of UK adults (34 per cent) feel stressed on a daily basis as a result of their financial situation - an increase of four per cent on 2011. Seventeen per cent say it is their future financial situation which is the main cause of the stress, and a further seventeen per cent say it is their current financial situation. This is followed by fourteen per cent who state they are most stressed out by their health, and a further thirteen per cent by their job.

Kevin Mountford, Head of Banking at MoneySupermarket, said: "As was the case last year, anxiety about money is the top cause of stress for many adults. This is unsurprising given the difficult economic environment and the rising cost of living, which has really impacted hard-pressed households. Unfortunately, I think we can expect next year's outlook to be just as tough as changes to benefits, taxation and further austerity measures take their toll. If you are in a position where you are worrying about money, you can take positive action to relieve this- there are ways to take control of your finances and reduce the worry they can cause. Understanding and controlling your household budgeting better and avoid unnecessary overspending can help alleviate some of the anxiety, even if times remain tough."

The research also reveals that 77 per cent of those who feel stressed by their finances, believe this stress will only increase next year. A huge 60 per cent blame the rising cost of living as a key factor in making their stress worse, with a further eight per cent worried about their mortgage repayments, and six per cent are concerned by squeezes to their benefits in 2013. Many also believe Christmas will add a further financial strain, with a fifth (22 per cent) stating that it will either push them into debt or further into debt.

Taking your finances by the horns...Overall, half of Brits (50 per cent)

think they could save money by taking better care of their finances, but 16 per cent of these don't know how they could save more money. One in six (15 per cent) simply can't be bothered spending the time to research the best options, and 10 per cent blame lack of time as a factor stopping them taking control and sorting out their finances. A further nine per cent do not understand their finances or know what the best options are for their needs. When asked how long it took before they got bored or frustrated with their finances, 25 per cent said it was within the first twenty minutes.

Kevin Mountford, continued: "Taking time out to review your finances and switching to a better product for your needs really could make all the difference and provide a welcome boost to your finances in the New Year. And it's really much simpler and quicker than you think.”

Web first for patients contacting NHS Direct over ChristmasPERFORMANCE statistics published by NHS Direct show its telephone and online services were used around 796,000 times over the festive period (17 December 2012 to 1 January 2013). Over half (58%) of these contacts - around 464,000 - were via NHS Direct's online health and symptom checkers.

The busiest days were Sunday 23 December, Boxing Day (26 December) and the weekend of 29 and 30 December, with over 223,000 contacts over these four days on the phone and online.

Throughout the festive period, around 94% of patients calling the 0845 46 47 service with the most urgent needs were dealt with in less than 20 minutes. Around 41% of patients who called were given advice which allowed them to care for themselves at home, only needing to seek further help if their symptoms persisted.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has reported a rise in norovirus this season. NHS Direct's data shows that over the Christmas period around 15,000 people called the 0845 46 47 service about diarrhoea or vomiting symptoms and there were 30,000 uses of the diarrhoea and

vomiting online symptom checker. Other common reasons for using NHS Direct over the period were colds and flu, abdominal pain, rashes and skin problems and medicines enquiries.

Nick Chapman, NHS Direct Chief Executive, said: "The Christmas and New Year period is the busiest time of year for NHS Direct. I would like to pay tribute to the commitment and skills of NHS Direct staff who helped many thousands of people access appropriate care, and to care for themselves and their families at home during the holiday period.

"Over half of contacts with NHS Direct this year were via the web and mobile app. This shows that our online health and symptom checkers remain popular with patients, and the importance of the digital channel for providing health advice."

Fashion Got any fashion tips? @chiherald

Take control with cruise collectionsTHE FASHION WORLD is impatient, adapting constantly and shifting focus. Waiting a whole six months between collections became too much for some designers to bear. Hence the birth of ‘Cruise’ or ‘Resort’ Collections; consisting of pieces appropriate for warmer winter escapes and giving you a hint of what’s to come.

Originally created by high-end designer fashion houses, the pieces came to the aid of the lucky folk spending their winter relaxing in warmer climates, who were perhaps struggling to find the right attire whilst rails were full of chunky cardigans, wet weather gear and sheepskin coats.

If you’re super-organised, looking to update your wardrobe and savvy enough to know the fashion forecast, this transitional period is also a great time to pick up key pieces that will serve you well in spring/summer here on home soil. Michael Kors was quoted as saying; “They (cruise collections) are the clothes that can be whatever season you want them to be. Often it just depends what is on your feet.”

Breathable linens, cottons and silks for when you’ve ditched the gloomy British days

make the shock of leaving your knitwear and heavy coats behind a lot more exciting. You’ll find them perfectly structured for layering and in colours and styles that complement each other perfectly, making the packing and styling whilst away less stressful.

Furthermore, it’s not just the casual everyday attire that is catered for within the collections. If you are cruising, you’ll find some gorgeous full length gowns, chic cover-ups and fine jewellery. Comfortable, flattering and effortless whilst being down-

right breath-taking, Joseph Ribkoff wins the award for most awe-inspiring gowns hands down.

The beautiful, bright and encouraging

pieces may look odd amongst the other rails of winter-wear but they are a sign of hope and a reminder that there are sunrays out there…. somewhere!

David Gandy praises Romeo Beckham

DAVID GANDY has praised Romeo Beckham as a "natural" model.

The 32-year-old Dolce & Gabbana model believes the 10-year-old son of David and Victoria Beckham did a great job in his first fashion campaign, fronting Burberry's spring/summer 2013 advertising alongside Cara Delevigne and Edie Campbell and thinks the youngster probably had a great time on the shoot.

David said: "Romeo looks like a natural to me and does a wonderful job for a great British

brand."He looks as though he really enjoyed

himself and had fun."David also dismissed speculation that

Romeo is too young for such a high-profile job.He told the Mail on Sunday newspaper:

"It would be very hard to set an age limit for models when most brands have a children's line."

Burberry's chief creative officer Christopher Bailey recently praised Romeo as a "joy to work with".

Models swim with whale sharks in the Philippines

TWO MODELS are doing their bit to raise awareness of the plight of whale sharks - by shooting an underwater campaign with one of the ocean's most beautiful and placid creatures.

Hannah Fraser and Roberta Mancino modelled swimwear and accessories underwater with the whale sharks in Oslob, in the Philippines, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Photographer Kristian Schmidt

employed the help of local fisherman to track the sharks, as they have a close bond with the animals, often feeding them in shallow waters with shrimp.

Whale sharks often grow to 30ft, with the largest confirmed being 41.5ft, and can weigh up to 21 tonnes.

It is found in warm and tropical oceans and can live for up to 70 years, but the species is under threat from human poachers.

DIY savvy Brits can save up to £4k per yearIF THE THOUGHT of fixing a wobbly patio or levelling an uneven floor leaves you in a cold sweat then you’re not alone. Millions of Brits are throwing away thousands of pounds every year by paying external workmen to do jobs they could easily tackle themselves.

A poll by Tarmac revealed Brits could save themselves up to £4,000 a year by learning a few simple home maintenance techniques.

The research looked into the reluctance to carry out maintenance, repairs and renovation around the home and whether with a bit of patience, willing and knowledge we could actually save ourselves substantial amounts of money.

Julia Kendell, celebrity DIY expert and star of BBC One’s DIY SOS said: “If we took the time to actually learn a few basics and had a bit of patience instead of giving up at the first hurdle or not even starting in the first place, we could actually surprise ourselves with our skill and save money at the same time.”

To help DIY shy Brits Tarmac have launched a revolutionary new range of DIY repair products called U-CAN available in B&Q stores nationwide.

The innovative U-CAN mix in the bag products include mortar and concrete which even the most novice home improver will be able to use, with the help of an online video guide for each product. More information can be found at u-can.tv.

Number of British property millioniares hits 300,000STRONG DEMAND for prime residential property during 2012 has created 47,024 more British property millionaires over the past 12 months, according to the latest research from property website Zoopla.co.uk.

There are now 300,142 property millionaires in Britain, up 19% from this time last year. The increase in property prices at the top-end of the market during 2012 was notably sharper than the rest of the property market where house prices grew by just 1% overall. House price growth in London and the South East, fuelled by demand from equity-rich buyers and limited supply, helped push the value of a further 47,024 UK properties over £1 million during 2012.

Almost two-thirds (64%) of Britain’s property millionaires live in London. The capital is home to 182,583 property millionaires, with 36,815 more created in the last 12 months, equivalent to 100 new property millionaires being created every day in the capital throughout 2012.

Kensington, W8 in London wears the crown for the most property millionaires in Britain with an average property value currently of £2,186,471 and where a staggering 64% of all homes are currently

worth over £1 million. The luxury pads of Kensington are home to Roman Abramovich along with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and where the value of the equivalent floor space to an Amazon Kindle (228cm²) is an eye-watering £389.

The most expensive street in the Britain is Kensington Palace Gardens. Dubbed ‘Billionaires Row’, the average home on the street is worth over £25 million. This exclusive address is home to Russian-American businessman Leonard Blavatnik, the UK’s 6th richest man, and to Lakshmi Mittal, the wealthiest man in the UK with a personal fortune of around £9.8 billion. The London PictureThe borough of Kensington and Chelsea is home to the most property millionaires with 36,293. Despite being the smallest London borough, covering just 12km², it contains 12% of Britain’s property millionaires. It is followed closely by the borough of Westminster (32,477) which includes the famous areas of Mayfair and Park Lane. In third place is the borough of Camden (18,400), which includes Primrose Hill, home of famous property millionaires such as James Cordon, Daniel Craig, Jamie Oliver

and Ed Miliband.Lawrence Hall of Zoopla.co.uk said: “The

top end of the property market operates seemingly in isolation to the rest of the market. Wealthier buyers are relatively impervious to the economic problems affecting the rest of the market, most notably

when it comes to getting a mortgage. Foreign buyers in particular have gravitated towards top-end property in London over the last few years, which has pushed up demand and prices on more expensive property as they try to secure a limited supply of top-end homes in the capital.”

Shared ownership proves popular with first time buyersNEW RESEARCH from Lloyds TSB indicates that almost half of first time buyers are looking at shared equity or shared ownership schemes to enable them to get a foot on the housing ladder and a quarter of those said it was their only chance of buying a home.

One in four said the main reason for choosing these schemes was that it would make their mortgage payments more affordable, while another quarter said they would be able to buy in an area which they otherwise couldn’t afford.

Shared ownership may be the perfect solution for first time buyers in London, with estate agents, Savills, predicting that London house prices will rise by 25% over the next five years, well ahead of the rest of the country.

Lauren Nicholson, Head of Marketing at Family Mosaic, comments: “Contrary to popular belief shared ownership is not just for key workers but is available to anyone who does not already own a property and is unable to buy a home on the open market.”

Lauren continues: “With Savills forecasting that house prices in London will continue to rise, this could be the perfect time to buy your first home. Whether you are looking for a one bedroom apartment or something bigger

to suit a family, we have something for everyone at our developments at Central Park, Lewisham, Harper Square, SE1 and New Festival Quarter, E14.”

With Family Mosaic, buying your first home in manageable, affordable stages is simple. You choose an apartment at one of its developments and buy the share you can afford. You can start by purchasing as little as 35% and increase your share at any time all the way to 100% and outright ownership. You will pay a Government subsidised rent on the remaining share of the property.

It’s a great alternative to renting as often the combined monthly mortgage payments and government subsidised rent is lower than for private, rented accommodation. This can be a very attractive option, with rental costs in London at more than twice the national average.

To qualify for the shared ownership scheme, your total household income must be less than £64,300 per annum for a one or two bedroom apartment or £77,200 for a three bedroom apartment. Ideally you should also have savings of around £3,500 to cover moving and legal costs.

Double-decker delight from Silverstone AuctionsARGUABLY one of Britain’s most iconic vehicles – a 1962 Leyland Routemaster red double-decker bus – is just the ticket for another successful Silverstone Auctions sale.

Estimated at between £20,000 to £28,000, the example being offered at the Race Retro & Classic Car Sale at Stoneleigh on 23rd February saw service for well beyond its active life expectancy – clearly demonstrating what a reliable, and well-loved, workhorse it is.

More recently it has been used for the occasional summer trip and historic vehicle displays.

Nick Whale, managing director, Silverstone Auctions, said: “This 1962 Routemaster is a great example of a great bus, serving Londoners, visitors and tourists for many decades.

“For most people it remains the best ever London bus and is still recognised throughout the world, so not surprisingly we expect an enormous amount of interest in this vehicle from all parts of the globe.”

Its famous open-platform design meant the need for a conductor, allowing minimal boarding time and extra security for passengers.

Meanwhile, its light weight design meant

fuel consumption figures that were better than for many of the vehicles that replaced it, while its power steering and automatic gearbox ease the driving.

“The Race Retro Sale focuses on classic and race cars but we’re also delighted to have a few other lots, such as this Routemaster, adding to the appeal. It might not be as fast or as sleek as some of the cars on offer, but it provides just as much fun and a great investment opportunity,” added Nick.

NEW Westergate softball sessions set to be a big hit at Six Villages Sports CentreIF YOU’RE LOOKING to get fit or try something new this year, Swing by Softball sessions at Six Villages Sports Centre – operated by Freedom Leisure – could be just what you’re looking for. Freedom Leisure has been given Sportivate funding from Active Sussex to run the new Swing by Softball sessions in partnership with BaseballSoftballUK, which will be led by qualified coaches.

If you like rounders, softball or baseball, Swing by Softball will hit the spot. The sessions aim to be fun, but will give a really good workout too. To take part, simply turn up, pay and play.

“Softball and baseball are becoming increasingly popular so now is a great time to get involved,” says Richard Bagwell, Freedom Leisure Group Sports Development Manager.

Sport Love Brighton proud to be supporting Sussex County Cricket Club

if Liverpool win but after the defeat on saturday the faithful will be hoping confidence isn’t dented especially with Ipswich, West Ham and Birmingham all on the horizon.

It has to be said though, every time Gus Poyet and his team have been tested since he took over, he seems to apply the midas touch and they pass with flying colours. It may be the most high profile week of his fledgling managerial career, and, like Albion fans, he will be hoping that after the 7 days and 3 games, it’s safe passage to the last 16 and 6 points in the bag.

OFTEN teams face a big week that determines the fate of their season. And often it comes in January.

However, by a quirk of the fixtures computer and TV scheduling the Albion face 3 massive games in a week, each for different reasons.

Liverpool wednesday : The game against Liverpool in the Carling Cup has the drama and the history. The Reds have Steven

Gerard back for the first time since march, straight of the back of a spanking from Spurs. Vicente may well get his first outing against a club he beat when with Valencia. Noone the roofer is a story well documented aswell. Gus

Leeds friday : 3 points on offer. 3 points on offer. 3 points on offer.

Palace tuesday : 3 points yes but also a fierce, if sometimes misunderstood rivalry. The first clash between the two sides at the Amex. Glenn Murray returns to his former club.

Whenever you look at games in isolation they have a certain significance but when you look at the 7 days and 3 games together this period could become a pivotal point in the season.

No-one (not Noone) would be suprised

Straight from the commentary box

I FOR ONE can’t wait until the 26th Jaunary as Albion look to knock out Premier League opposition once again and make it to the 4th round of the FA Cup for the 3rd successive season. However, with games against Derby, Birmingham and Blackburn approaching the focus will be on league points.

2013 has started well. The Ipswich performance was one of the best of the season in my view and the Newcastle win can only boost confidence. They were both reminders of how important the full squad is when bidding for promotion. Gary Dicker returned to the field as if he’d never been away. He knows how to play the Poyet way. Perhaps that couldn’t always be levelled at Will Hoskins. However,

his well- timed run and deft finish was a reminder of his quality and the motivation behind Poyet’s signing. It conjured memories of his first Seagulls goal at Cardiff. Both he and Dicker may prove crucial over the next 20 games or so.

A quick word on the FA Cup. It’s a hectic few weeks coming up for both Arsenal and Swansea. Whoever Albion face it will be tough but I can’t see either

being at full strength. And congratulations must go to Hastings United. A wonderful goal, a wonderful turn-out at Middlesbrough and nice to see around 500 supporters turning out on Tuesday in the League.

City stun their rivalsSussex County LeagueDivision OneChichester City 3-1 SelseyBy Darran Stevens

A SUPERB goalkeeping performance by Dan Roberts kept Selsey at bay and gave Chichester a 3-1 victory at a muddy Oaklands Park.

City led 2-1 at the interval, but came in for a heavy onslaught after they were reduced to ten men and it was only the heroics of Roberts that prevented a Selsey comeback.

There was a flurry of goals midway through the first-half. On 23 minutes, City’s Fraser Smith sent in a terrific curling effort that keeper Sam Joyce brilliantly finger-tipped over the bar. But from the resulting corner, Julian Boniface crept in to score the opener.

Three minutes later it was 2-0 after a howling error by Joyce, who came out of his goal to close down the advancing Dan Watts. The City forward, however, reached the ball first and rounded Joyce before comfortably despatching into an empty net.

Selsey retaliated on 30 minutes when a fierce shot was well stopped by Roberts, but Rob Wimble slammed in the rebound.

It was Selsey that were now dominating, and on 51 minutes Luke Killner’s effort took an evil deflection off a City defender before Roberts’ reflex reaction rescued the situation.

Jack Bingham then broke through, only to be brought down by last-man Boniface on the edge of the box, which resulted in the inevitable red card.

But against the run of play, Chichester

extended their advantage on 72 minutes when sub Dan Potter collected a cross from the left and rifled the ball home.

Selsey continued to pound their opponent’s goal, but time and time again Roberts would not be denied. With 11 minutes remaining, he somehow scrambled the ball off the line to stop what seemed a certain goal.

The result means that Chichester remain third-bottom in the league table, but are now only five points behind Selsey and Dorking Wanderers immediately above them.
