Popular museum receives financially boost

THE WEALD & DOWNLAND Open Air Museum at Singleton near Chichester has received initial support for a £4 million bid from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for a major development project with the aim of securing the future of the Museum.

The Gateway project includes the building of a new visitor centre and refectory together with improved interpretation and navigation across the site. The project also builds on the Museum’s already outstanding educational offering.

In this first phase of HLF funding £250,000 has been awarded to the Weald & Downland Open Air Museum so that it can develop a full set of detailed plans before applying for the full, multi-million pound

Fund,” says Paul Rigg, the Museum’s Chair of Trustees. “The funds will be used to transform the visitor experience at all levels while preserving those features that all our

friends and visitors have found so special over the past 40 years. Our aim is to provide better access to the range of... Continued on page 3

“The Gateway project is an ambitious one. It involves re-locating one of the Museum’s medieval houses, Sole Street and building a new refectory and learning pavilion on the vacated space,” says Museum Director, Richard Pailthorpe.

“We are also planning a new visitor entrance and orientation gallery which will introduce visitors to our Museum and to the South Downs. It is about attracting new audiences to the Museum and developing the participation of the local community in its development. In addition, this project will enable the Museum to establish a strong and mutually beneficial relationship with the South Downs National Park Authority, which will see the Museum acting as “a gateway” to this part of the South Downs” Richard continues.

“We want to improve the way we tell the history of our buildings and the stories of the people that lived in them even better

than we do now. It is vitally important that we address the sustainability of the Museum now to safeguard its future, and that we ensure the Museum retains its national reputation as a centre for excellence in the museum and heritage sector. Our partnership with the South Downs National Park is an important opportunity, and we are looking forward to developing the details of the project over the coming months.”

20mph maximum speed limit for Chichester being readied for summer20MPH signs and road markings are appearing around Chichester ahead of every residential street in the town adopting the new speed limit this summer.

West Sussex County Council has introduced the lower speed limit for every residential street – except A and B roads – to encourage walking and cycling and make residents feel safer.

The change was also made to make the streets quieter and boost Chichester’s economy, with people more likely to use local shops rather than travelling out of town.

West Sussex County Council’s Principal Communities Officer, Greg Ockwell, said: “Most people feel safer in a 20mph limit, and find it easier to cross the road, ride bikes or play outside.

“A 20mph limit also encourages more considerate driving, particularly for short trips, which makes for quieter streets and an environment where neighbours are more likely to get to know each other.

“When people feel the roads are safer, they are much more likely to cycle or walk to work, school, the doctors or local shops, reducing congestion and pollution.”

The County Council made the decision to reduce the speed limit to 20mph after an extensive consultation with Chichester residents last year.

Of 5,613 residents who responded in the summer of 2012, three out of every four supported the move to a 20mph speed limit.

Martin Reed, owner of City Cycles in Bognor Road, Chichester, said: “This has to be the best idea that the council has supported in a long time.

“We back it 100 per cent. Unfortunately Chichester is too built up to create priority cycle routes – the next best thing is to slow the traffic down and make the roads safer.”

Towns and cities where extensive 20mph speed limits are already in place, or are planned, include Brighton, Portsmouth, Edinburgh, Oxford, Bristol, and the London boroughs of Islington and Southwark. A wide range of road safety charities and transport organisations are also campaigning for slower speeds, including the Campaign for Better Transport, Brake, Living Streets, 20’s Plenty, Sustrans and the Campaign to Protect Rural England.

New signs are now appearing around the Chichester roads

The Great DebateDEBATING teams from two schools will be battling it out to be crowned champions of a West Sussex debating competition next week.

Students from Bishop Luffa School and Angmering School will contest the grand final of the West Sussex Schools Debating Association competition on Tuesday, April 16.

Three motions - ‘Youth councils aren’t important’, ‘Competitive boxing shouldn’t be taught in schools’ and ‘Social networking sites go too far’ - will be up for discussion at the event, which will be held at County Hall in Chichester.

The teams will be comprised of students aged between 14-16 years.

Eight schools took part in the knock-out style tournament, which is supported by the County Council’s Voice and Engagement team – part of the Youth Support and Development Service

Certificates will be presented to participants, while the best individual debater will be awarded with the Shirley Robinson-Viney Salver.

The winning school will receive the Southern Rail School Challenge Cup.

Former Chichester High School student, Tom Rusbridge – now studying History at Kings College London – organised the competition having been inspired after participating in smaller scale debates when he was in sixth form.

THE CIRCLE OF LIFEWhat’s it all about, eh?

DEATH AT THE RITZI suppose if you’re someone who was a champion of wealth and believed there was no such thing as society you wouldn’t mind quite so much as the rest of us, dying alone in bed at the Ritz.

24 HOUR CAREMy wife saw a table she liked in the Hospice Charity shop up by the Spar Garage on the way towards Lavant, and badgered me to go see. But it was getting late and I didn’t know when they closed. So I phoned them. Got the number off the website. Them: “Hello? St Wilfrid’s” Me: “Hello, what time do you close?” Long pause. “What time do we close? We don’t close. We’re open 24 hours a day.” Luckily I realised I’d accidentally rung the actual Hospice instead of their charity shop. They gave me the shop’s number. We bought the table, because we liked it, and maybe slightly for Karma too.

ROAD MARKINGSI was up at the road outside St Richard’s Hospital and there were 3 men putting down the yellow criss-cross lines for one of those box junctions you shouldn’t stop on. They were doing it entirely by line of sight. No computer or drawing plans or nothing. I

told them it was one of the most impressive things I’d seen for a long while, the foreman went “Thanks mate, nice to be appreciated.”

BUDDHISM AND DEATHI’ve been listening to a Buddhist radio station, very interesting. They believe there are 8 stages of death, all of them perfectly pleasant if you have the chance to get a bit of peace while it’s going on. They believe the mind lives on for 3 days after the body dies, before it breezes away from the body and off towards the next life, which it joins after 49 days.

THE NEXT MRS THATCHERFunny how the mind works, I sat there thinking, if Buddhism is the one, Mrs Thatcher will be reborn on June 2nd.

WOODY ALLENHe said: “I believe in reincarnation. I

intend to come back. As Warren Beatty’s fingertips.”

MRS THATCHER AND CHURCHILLRidiculous, one news organisation running a poll to see who is the greatest, Winston or Margaret. When Churchill was near death someone asked him if he was ready to meet his maker. He replied “I am. More to the point, is HE ready for the ordeal of meeting me?”

PREPARING FOR YOUR FIRST CHILDIn the last week before your first child is born, find a couple with a young child. Tell them where they are going wrong with their upbringing of the child. The times they are too rigid, the times they are too liberal. How they can improve discipline, toilet training, sleeping arrangements, table manners. Enjoy the experience. It will be the last time in your life you have all the answers.

JOKEA man phones the hospital and shrieks “My wife’s contractions are two minutes apart what do I do!?” The hospital says “Is this her first child?” The man replies “No, you idiot this is her husband!”

Council wins legal challenge over illegal works in East HartingCHICHESTER District Council and the South Downs National Park Authority have won a legal challenge over illegal works to land at Three Cornered Piece in East Harting.

Portsmouth County Court ruled that the defendants Christopher Francis Searle and Jimmy Roy Searle had carried out works to the land, in breach of an injunction granted in January 2010 to stop any further works from taking place.

The judge found that the defendants had breached the injunction when they carried out works including:• additional sewage treatment works;• widening of the access track to the land;• construction of an area of hard-standing; and• the installation of a concrete base on the land.

The judge found that the two men had breached the injunction on all four counts which is treated as a contempt of court. The judgement was made on Wednesday 20 March 2013.

The judge also ordered the men to pay the council’s legal costs and that the defendants each be sentenced to 28 days imprisonment for contempt of court. The sentence and warrant of committal was suspended provided that on or before 17 September 2013 the unauthorised works are removed from the land. If they fail to remove the works committal to prison will be effective.

The men also have until 16 August 2013 to comply with the requirements of the

enforcement notice that requires the mobile homes to be removed from the land.

Councillor Heather Caird, Leader of Chichester District Council, says: “We are delighted that Portsmouth County Court ruled in our favour in this case. The land lies within the South Downs National Park and the additional works carried out in breach of the original injunction harm the character and appearance of this part of the National Park.

“This case is a clear statement to the community that we will not tolerate these breaches of the law. We will do all we can to preserve the beauty of the district and will take action against offenders when necessary.”

Andrew Shaxson, Chair of Planning for the South Downs National Park Authority, says: “We work closely with Chichester District Council to protect the special qualities in this part of the National Park. It is very good news that the council’s hard work on our behalf has paid off and that Portsmouth County Court have not only ruled in our favour but allowed Chichester District Council to recover costs.”

Chichester District Council served an Enforcement Notice in relation to two mobile homes, one caravan, and stable buildings for residential purposes in 2009. It required the removal of the mobile homes and caravan from the land, which is a greenfield site, and to cease using the land for residential purposes.

Police linking three Chichester burglariesPOLICE are appealing for witnesses after three burglaries occurred in Chichester, all of which were within walking distance of each other.

Between midnight and 6am on Saturday 6 April, homes in Stride Close, York Road and Pound Farm Road were broken into with the suspects entering the back gardens and breaking in at the rear of the properties before stealing electrical items,

cash and bank cards. In the first one in York Road, a Tag Heuer

watch, ipod, digital camera, cash, Ipad and laptop were stolen, at the Pound Farm Road burglary, a mobile phone, bank cards and cash were taken and in the third at Stride Close, a handbag and mobile phone were stolen.

Anyone with information should contact Sussex Police quoting serial 273 of 6/4.

Op Allegro cracks down on raves in Chichester DistrictAN OPERATION was launched in Chichester District over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend in a bid to deter and prevent illegal music events (raves) from taking place.

Under the name of Operation Allegro, proactive patrols were carried out by local neighbourhood policing officers - and for the first time in several years, no raves were reported to police.

PCSO Craig Dunlop, from Midhurst and Petworth Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "While some in the rave community profess to see no harm in their illegal activities, we know from past experience that these events can cause an immense amount of disruption to our rural communities.

"In addition to the noise complaints, there is also the illegal entry onto private land involving both people and vehicles, and the depositing of litter, some of which is very hazardous to health.

"Sussex Police would like to thank our

partner agencies for their assistance, as without increased security at vulnerable sites and constant vigilance our job would be a lot more difficult."

Although no raves took place last weekend there is still the possibility that events will occur as spring and summer approach. Sussex Police is reminding people to remain vigilant and report any possible rave related activity on the non-emergency number 101.

This could include:- the removal of locks from secured access points- vehicles, particularly panel vans or larger, driving off road- groups of vehicles congregating in rural areas- convoys of vehicles- loud music from remote woodland

By receiving early warnings Sussex Police has a much better chance of disrupting the rave and dispersing those responsible for its organisation.

BORN six weeks early Chloe Humphrey was so tiny that people mistook her for a doll.

At 18 months Chloe was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, with spastic diplegia. The prognosis wasn’t good; her family were warned that it was unlikely that she would ever walk. But medics hadn’t reckoned on Chloe’s determination. By 20 months she was toddling with the aid of a walking frame, progressing to sticks by the age of 4.

But sadly Chloe’s condition can only get worse as she gets older.

And that’s why Chloe and her family are focussed on raising £ 36,000 to pay for a major life-changing operation that, sadly, is not funded on the NHS in West Sussex.

A day in the life of me06.00: alarm goes off. Not a great night’s sleep, so I’m whacked before I start. I spend half an hour doing my exercises to help my legs.06:30: The shower’s the next challenge. Got to climb into the bath and sometimes just fall out again!07:30: Slowly downstairs, holding tightly to the banister and wall. While the kettle’s

boiling I make sure my bag and wheelchair are ready for college. Back in the kitchen for a cup of tea. I can only part-fill the kettle and my cup or I spill boiling water over myself because of my shaky legs.

08:40: the taxi picks me up but I’ve got to use the back door as I can’t close and lock the front door from the outside.09:00 – 16:30 at Chichester College. I love being there but have to fight my way though the crowds. Some people don't see me coming; in my chair I am lower than everyone else. I get whacked in my face with heavy bags but it’s part of the job, so I just get on with it! Bit of a struggle managing my own heavy bags – been tipped out of my wheelchair as I wrestle with them more than once! Sometimes the lift isn't working, but me and my student tutor joke that they should make rockets so I can get down the stairs in my chair!16:45: home again. Pretty exhausted, I often fall asleep on the sofa before dinner, even though I’ve got homework to do.21:00: exercises and bed, with fingers crossed that my legs won’t twitch and hurt and stop me sleeping tonight as the alarm’s set for 06:00 again.

Vicki’s writing inspirations include the work of Raymond Carver, Stuart Evers, A.M. Homes and Steven Millhauser.

Making light of new art work

MANY hands make light work. This was the case for artists with learning disabilities from West Sussex County Council’s Starburst Arts initiative who used casts of their own hands to help make a new city centre sculpture.

The work is an installation of ceramic hand casts made by several of the artists at Starburst Arts, who chose clay as the medium for the piece.

The work of art was officially unveiled at Chichester District Council on Monday, April 8.

Artists of all abilities contributed to this installation. Some developed ideas and

skills independently, while others enjoyed working with helpers.

Some found the wedging, kneading and rolling of the clay important, while others enjoyed the sounds and tactile aspect, or the glazing and embellishing of their hand.

The exhibition is part of the Outburst project, which aims to show off in public the work of such artists and to promote inclusion within the community.

Amanda Rogers, West Sussex County Council’s Director of Adults’ Services, said: “I am always impressed with the work that these artists produce through Starburst Arts, and their work deserves to have a wider

audience.“West Sussex County Council is keen to

promote these works as an example of an inclusive community we would all like to see.”

“We like to think that it represents being part of a bigger whole, and that taking part and working together is open to everybody, regardless of ability.”

Cllr Josef Ransley, Cabinet Member for Corporate Services and Communications at Chichester District Council, said: “We are delighted to be able to showcase this artwork in our building and would encourage local people to come along and view it.”

Drivers urged to take care while spring freeze grips West SussexMOTORISTS are being reminded to drive with caution by West Sussex County Council as the spring freeze continues.

The coldest March on record since 1962, followed by similarly sub-zero weather in April, is affecting the county’s road network.

County Council contractor Balfour Beatty used 3,906 tonnes of salt to keep the roads safe during March after gritters were deployed on almost every night.

This is in contrast to last year, when mild temperatures meant hardly any salt needed to be used.

Stuart Smith, West Sussex County Council’s Highways Maintenance Manager, said: “We are urging people to take care on the roads while we are experiencing these conditions.

“Even though we are entering spring drivers need to keep their cars maintained as if its winter, so check things such as your screen wash levels and tyres.

“We would like to ask people to drive responsibly and safely whenever they travel out because of the effect the cold is having on our roads.”

Balfour Beatty continues to top up the supply of road salt in the depots and will grit every time the weather conditions require it.

Grit bins located across West Sussex have also been fully replenished – above

and beyond West Sussex County Council’s statutory duty to do so.

Over 10,000 potholes have been filled in since the turn of the year, with a further 10,000 predicted to be fixed by June.

An extra £500,000 is being spent on providing extra pothole patrol crews to repair the roads under Operation Watershed, the County Council’s initiative to tackle problems caused by extreme weather.

This is on top of what is already spent on roads maintenance.

However, the cold weather has made it difficult for the County Council to keep up with pothole repairs.

Because of the wet and the cold, it is difficult to make permanent repairs to potholes.

Sometimes a temporary repair has to be used, which is monitored with a view to being fixed permanently later in the year.

Ground water levels are also still high and any additional rainfall brings the risk of flooding, with the threat of ice caused by the low temperatures.

ON FRIDAY 5th April, my life changed. I went to the One Direction Take Me Home concert. You may think I’m exaggerating but I promise you I’m not. The experience is one I will NEVER forget. It was amazing, inspiring, jaw dropping. I may not be much of a reviewer, but here is my best shot at it.

I think we can all accept that some of the best singers, even our favourites, use auto tune on their albums. This doesn’t bother me like it does some real music fanatics, but the one thing that does get under my skin is when people do live performances whilst lip singing. I don’t see the point. You accept you can’t sing, so why go in front of thousands of people pretending to be able to? Money would be the answer.

But this is not the case for One Direction. They did a set of 21 songs and each one was live, honest and real. And even better, they sounded just as good, if not better, than they do on the album. Each song was filled with emotion and you could tell that they really appreciate their fans and wanted to make each moment the best they could.

Another reason the concert was, in my opinion, such a success was that they really interacted with the audience. They spoke to the audience, thanked us numerous times for our support

and I felt like they really tried to make a connection with us.

Also, whereas with some concerts, each song is planned out to a T with choreography and backing dancers and everyone is wearing matching outfits, this one was much more relaxed. One Direction looked comfortable on stage and it gave us the chance to appreciate their voices and the songs.

Finally – The atmosphere. Everyone was excited. Everyone was singing, screaming and jumping and they fed off our electricity. They pumped up the crowd until everyone was bouncing out of their seats. And I don’t mean to brag, but Harry Styles waved at me. We made eye contact. It happened.

Bottom line - Not everyone may like One Direction or consider them ‘musicians’ but they can put on one hell of a good show.

Free wi-fi being launched in West Sussex librariesREADERS using West Sussex libraries are getting free internet access on their own laptops, tablets and smartphones after plans to install wi-fi were given the go ahead. The state-of-the-art system is being fitted in every branch during the next few months.

Lesley Sim, Information Service Manager for the county’s libraries, said: “The number of laptops and smart phones has risen significantly during the last five years so it is vitally important we keep up to date with new technology

“Anyone living in West Sussex will be able to visit a library and log on using their own device. The new service will supplement rather than replace the existing paid-for internet access, which will still be available in all 36 West Sussex libraries.”

The decision to instal wi-fi is part of a long-term plan to modernise the service, which saw new self-service book machines installed last year.

Putting in the new system will not mean closing any libraries while the work is carried out. Installing and testing the equipment in each branch should generally take less than a day. Work is starting this month, and is expected to finish by the end of July.

Why choose an older rescue cat?

Shirley is a 13 year old affectionate black and white female looking for a home

AN OLDER RESCUE CAT may be the most appropriate choice for those concerned about caring for their pet at predictable turning points in their lives, yet want to continue to experience the delights of cat ownership. The average lifespan of a cat is 15 to18 years, which is long in relation to our own lifestyle and lifespan, which tend to occur in 5-7 year periods.

For some families with young teenagers adoption of a say 6 or 7+ year old cat might be considered a good option as there are predictable changes in the household situation within 7-10 years. Cats of this age are also calmer and less demanding in a hectic home.

For an older person, the loss of a beloved cat with loss of companionship, relaxation and induced routine can be very difficult to deal with after years of ownership. For some not taking another pet due to concerns about caring for it during it’s lifespan, this is the right decision. However, adopting an older rescue cat is an alternative solution. Choosing an 8-13 year old cat who is calmer, less interested in wildlife, and appreciative of the

comfort and companionship which an older person can offer could be appropriate for the 5-7 years to your next life stage. And if the unexpected happens, and you can no longer care for your cat (or compatible cat pair) that you adopted from The Cat and Rabbit Rescue, then it can be returned.

Some Older Friendly Neutered Cats waiting for a home: • Shirley is a 13 year old affectionate black and white female.• Fenella is a lovely 11 year old black and white female • Cooper is a 10 year old black and white affectionate male.

• Budd is black and Laurel is black and white, a gentle 10 year old pair. • Fitch & Fern, a tabby male and torty and white female 11 year old pair. • Benny & Bryony a 5 year old tabby and white and a 10 year old black and white pair.

The Rescue asks for a minimum donation of £45 for each neutered cat which includes vaccination, microchip, and Petplan vet insurance for 4 weeks.

Chichester BusinessVolunteer decorating team help charity with a lick of paintSIX volunteers from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) gave up two days of their time to volunteer and support local charity the Aldingbourne Trust. Rose Askew, Angela Taylor, Sandra Edwards, Nuala Smith, Vikki Sampson and Claire Wallace spent the two days painting and decorating a flat at one of the Trust’s residential centres in Queen’s Square Bognor Regis. The flat needed some basic tender loving care and a new colour scheme and the volunteers did a fantastic job.

Queen’s Square Manager Ruth Frampton was really impressed with how well the volunteers did. “I was amazed at how quickly they transformed the flat and to a very high quality finish. We really appreciate the time and commitment the six volunteers gave us and our tenant is delighted with the results.”

Scott Bell the Aldingbourne Trust’s Volunteer coordinator said: “we have a good relationship with a number of corporate bodies but we have an especially close one with the Department of Work and Pensions through their Community 10,000 staff volunteering programme. Groups from the DWP have worked with the Trust on numerous occasions and we are grateful

for their staff’s help and assistance.”The Aldingbourne Trust is an enterprising

ISC celebrate new addition to RIB fleet ITCHENOR Sailing Club is celebrating having taken delivery of a new Humber Destroyer RIB, which will become the flagship vessel of their support fleet.

The new boat arrived at the Club last week and has been 60% funded by Sport England as part of their Small Grants Programme, which uses lottery funding to award not-¬-for-¬-profit organisations to help more young people and adults take part and keep a sporting habit for life.

The Sailing Club is popular for its fleet of rigid-¬-inflatable boats (RIB) which are light-¬- weight and high-¬-performance vessels designed to be stable and seaworthy for club safety.

At 5.5 metres the new vessel is longer than the rest of the RIB fleet found at Itchenor to allow her to be more useful when out at sea. With a slightly bigger Honda on the back she is able to go anywhere, while still being suitable for use as a rescue boat in Chichester Harbour.

The red RIB has been named "Charlie Charlie" in memory of Charles Currey who

died in May 2010. Charles was one of the first members at Itchenor Sailing Club and was a silver medalist in the 1952 Olympic Games.

The Christening ceremony will be taking place at the Clubhouse later this month and one lucky member will get the opportunity to officially name the vessel.

Itchenor Sailing Club has an exciting year ahead with a busy racing schedule that kicked off on 23rd March. The prestigious sailing club has also recently opened its doors to the Grade II listed Clubhouse to non-¬-members for the first time for corporate hire and private events.

Local artist launches unique range of fine textile designs LOCAL artist, Nicole Phillips has successfully launched a new online textile design company run from her home in the heart of West Sussex.

The unique, beautiful and quirky range of home furnishings and accessories have all been designed and created by Nicole and manufactured here in the UK. The result is an exquisitely made and distinctive collection that appeals to both town and country.

The collection uses Nicole’s intricate hand-¬-painted watercolour designs, which are transferred onto carefully selected fabrics to create a product range that includes tea towels, aprons, hob covers, oven gloves, napkins and cushions. The stunning fabric designs will also be available to buy by the metre.

Taking inspiration from the natural world and her local surroundings here on the South Coast, Nicole’s artwork features quirky coastal characters, culinary delights and classic cottage flowers such as geraniums and roses.

Nicole, founder of Nicole Phillips England commented: "I feel very lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the country where I can find inspiration for my artwork right here on my doorstep, whether its at the nearby beach at the Witterings, the South Downs National Park, or shopping in my local market town of Midhurst. Seeing my designs coming to life has been magical and we are all extremely

delighted with our first range.”Founded in 2012 and launched in March

2013, Nicole now runs the business with her small team in Midhurst in West Sussex.

Nicole had an idyllic childhood growing up on a small island in the Bahamas before moving to England to complete her education. Her early experiences continue to influence her art today and many of the Nicole Phillips England designs feature themes relating to the sea and nature. Nicole gained a degree in Ceramics at Bath University and she ran a

successful studio in West Sussex for 6 years before taking a break to start a family.

The eureka moment came one evening in August 2012 when Nicole realised that her artwork was ideally suited for printing on fabric and since then she has been immersed in creating and exploiting the possibilities that the medium of textiles can bring.

Available in various colours and incorporating classic undertones, Nicole Phillips England offers a refreshing new take on the country chic trend, and an original

and attractive collection that will appeal to all personalities.

Products start from £12 for tea towels and all pieces are available to buy online at www.nicolephillips.com where you can also find more information about the company and read the Nicole Phillips England blog.

Nicole will also be displaying her new range at this year’s Spirit of Summer Fair on 15th-18th May at Olympia in London. Tickets are available at http://www.spiritofsummerfair.co.uk.

Spring Breakers (18)FOUR out of Five stars

extremely game performances (they spend almost the entire film in bikinis), though they are somewhat overshadowed in the acting stakes by James Franco, who’s riotously entertaining as Alien. On the surface, the film looks and feels like a trashy exploitation thriller (there’s plenty of nudity, much of it provided by willing volunteers, since the film was shot amidst actual Spring Break action), but the second half of the film reveals its arthouse pretensions; the plot, such as it is, slows to a crawl, eventually getting lost in a dreamlike haze of looping

get bailed out by sleazy, corn-rowed, gangster-slash-rapper Alien (James Franco), who attempts to recruit them into helping him take down his dangerous rival, Archie (Gucci Mane).

The GoodKorine’s biggest coup is his calculated casting of former squeaky-clean Disney Princesses Gomez and Hudgens; their presence automatically guarantees media attention, even if Gomez, at least, is actually allowed to maintain her goodie-goodie image in the film. That said, all four girls deliver solid and

Stylishly directed and darkly funny, Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers is a weird, day-glo fusion of trashy exploitation thriller and arthouse pretension, enlivened by game performances from a trio of former squeaky-clean TV stars and a deliriously brilliant turn from James Franco.

What’s it all about?Written and directed by Harmony Korine (Gummo), Spring Breakers stars Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine (the director’s wife) as Faith, Candy, Brit and Cotty, four broke university students who decide to rob a restaurant in order to fund a debauched Spring Break vacation in Florida. Religious student Faith isn’t actually present for the robbery, but she happily joins in the boozy, bikini-clad beach-side shenanigans, though things take an unsavoury turn for her when the girls land in jail after a police raid and they

dialogue, swirling camerawork and a mess of trippy imagery, heightened by Benoît Debie’s day-glo cinematography (Korine apparently said he wanted the film to look like they’d used Skittles for filters) and a note-perfect soundtrack by Skillex and Cliff Martinez.

The GreatThough it flirts with the idea of actually having something to say about youth culture (e.g. Brit advising the girls to ‘Pretend it’s a video game’ when they pull off the robbery), Spring Breakers is both decidedly tongue-in-cheek and darkly funny, all of which becomes glaringly obvious by the time the film reaches its wonderful key scene, a poolside piano-based rendition of a Britney ballad, which is then intercut with further illicit activity. This hilarious and brilliantly conceived sequence effectively serves as the climax, because the film doesn’t really know where to go after that, though it scarcely matters, as the memory of that scene alone will keep you grinning for days.

Worth seeing?Spring Breakers is trashy, ridiculous and pretentious in equal measure but it’s also enormously entertaining, thanks to stylish, day-glo direction, a killer soundtrack and superb performances from Franco and co.

Sky Diary - April 2013By Peter LittlejohnsJUPITER is still dominating the south-west sky and can be spotted before the evening gets properly dark. It will set around mid-night in the west and be past its best next month. The Moon will be very close to this giant planet on the 14th of April.

The lovely ringed Planet Saturn is now on full show between the constellations of Libra and Virgo in the south-east, being in a good observing position mid-month from 22:00hrs onward.

Comet L4 PanSTARRS unfortunately fades away towards the end of March and the start of April in the north-western part of the sky and will need binoculars to resolve its image. It is thought to originate from a spherical cloud surrounding the Solar System containing many billions of comets called the Oort cloud. These comets are relatively small bodies composed of rock, dust

and ice which get nudged out of their orbits either by collisions or gravitational influence and some get drawn towards the Sun. As they get closer to the Sun the ice particles sublimate into gas which we see as the head and tail. This tail can reach several million km. in length and is blown away by the solar wind, so always points away from the Sun. The comet's brightness is notoriously difficult to predict.

There are two meteor showers from Virgo (SSE) on the 12th with around 5 shooting stars an hour each. The April Lyrids (NE) occurs on the 22/23rd with a rate of 15+ an hour but the almost full Moon will interfere with the dimmer shooting stars.

There will be a partial eclipse of the Moon on the 25th starting at 20:51 very low down on the SE horizon. Only a very small, barely discernible, portion of the Moon's north polar region will slide into the umbral shadow of the Earth, ending at 21:23hrs.

Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle turns to art heist hypnotism in Trance, his latest joining award-winning films including The MasterThe Awards Season’s riches this week include The Master, Beasts of the Southern Wild and Salmon Fishing in the Yemen and Untouchable, these four films reaping a total of 33 awards or nominations from the Oscars, BAFTA, Golden Globes the French Césars and Cannes.

The Master, also voted Sight & Sound’s Best Film of 2012 by 50 film critics, stars the incomparable Philip Seymour Hoffman as Dodds who launches a faith-based organisation after the end of the Second World War. The charismatic intellectual recruits Freddie, a young drifter (the ever-watchable JoaquinPhoenix) as his right-hand man who begins to question the beliefs he has embraced since joining the master. Their relationship disturbs and perplexes Dodd's loyal disciples, including his formidable wife (Amy Adams), who considers Freddie beyond saving but fears that her husband could go the other way. This is an enthralling drama about a peculiarly American restlessness, and the striving for insight and grace.

The 10 year old Quvenzhane Wallis, nominated for Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal ofHushpuppy in Beasts of the Southern Wild, is nothing short of astonishing in this film of courage and love. In a forgotten but defiant bayou community cut off from the rest of the world by a sprawling levee, a six-year-old girl exists on the brink of orphanhood. Buoyed by her childish

optimism and extraordinary imagination, she believes that the natural world is in balance with the universe until a fierce storm changes her reality. Desperate to repair the structure of her world in order to save her ailing father and sinking home, this tiny hero must learn to survive unstoppable catastrophes of epic proportions.

Kristen Scott Thomas excels as the British prime minister’s over-zealous press secretary in Salmon Fishing in the Yemen as she endeavours to navigate the murky waters of a sheik’s vision of bringing the sport of fly-fishing to the desert, her dealings with the fisheries expert (played by Ewan McGregor) a comedic tour de force. Also starring Emily Blunt as the consultant brought in to realise the Yemeni dream of salmon leaping.

Untouchable, the charming smash-hit French comedy, garnering no less than 9 French Cesars, 1 Oscar and 1 BAFTA awards/ nominations, is the life-affirming story of depressed, wheelchair-confined, wealthy Philippe who takes on free-spirited Driss as a minder, a film a total delight. Little does the millionaire know but Driss, despite his carefree – OK – completely reckless attitude, will enhance his life in ways he certainly did not anticipate.

Danny Boyle, fresh from directing the Grand Finale of the London Olympics, had his new film, Trance, up his sleeve to premiere this month while masterminding

the complex ceremony last August. Starring the excellent James McAvoy as a fine art auctioneer mixed up with a criminal gang, he is forced to consult a hypnotist (Rosario Dawson) to recover a lost painting of major value. As boundaries between desire, reality and hypnosis blur, the stakes are high, many twists and turns coming as thick and as fast as a posse of Olympic Gold Medal runners. Also starring Vincent Cassel as the gang leader.

The Roman Polanski Classics continue the director’s earlier celebrated works with Repulsion. Starring Catherine Deneuve, she plays Carol, a young Belgian student alone in a London flat whose inner turmoil takes over, the film an unsettling study of loneliness and psychological disorder, Deneuve giving a remarkably subtle performance. The series continues with the celebrated Chinatown and Tess.

Food & DrinkWaitrose launches national scheme to encourage UK schools to produce and sell home-grown food From school to supermarket, Waitrose is unveiling a national ‘Grow and Sell’ initiative aimed at encouraging 7-11 year olds across the UK to grow their own produce and sell it to Waitrose customers. THE INITIATIVE, in association with the Waitrose farm on the Leckford Estate, aims to inspire over 100,000 children across the UK to grow their own produce during the summer months. The children will learn more about where food comes from, the impact of seasons, and develop entrepreneurial skills by selling their food directly to shoppers.

For the launch next week, every Waitrose branch will work with four local primary schools who will each receive a ‘Grow and Sell Seed Kit’. The kit has been specially designed to get school veg patches up and running, and includes seeds, equipment and step-by-step growing instructions. Later in the summer, the branches will invite the schools to sell their home-grown produce outside the store.

Schools will also be able to receive additional ‘Grow and Sell Seed Kits’ through the in-store Waitrose Community Matters scheme, where customers can support their local school by dropping a green token into the relevant perspex box.

Alan Titchmarsh, the nation's favourite gardener and well-known TV presenter, recently came on board at Waitrose to help raise the profile of British agriculture and horticulture.

Alan Titchmarsh, said: “Teaching children at an early age about the food they eat and where it comes from is something that I’m very passionate about - we’ve all read shocking statistics about how many nowadays do not know what chips are made from or that a blackberry is a type of fruit and not just a phone. The Waitrose ‘Grow and Sell’ scheme will play an important role in helping children understand the journey from field to plate. And evidence shows those who participate in growing projects are more likely to eat a wider variety of foods and make good nutritional choices throughout their lives.”

Tina Varns, Sustainability & Ethical Sourcing Manager, Waitrose, said: “We are really pleased to be rolling this initiative out to all 290 of our branches. Growing at school encourages children to eat well and to go

for a wider variety in their food - we believe this is very important as it paves the way for healthy eating.

The scheme also allows children to identify where food comes from, the

importance of seasonality and the fragility of producing food. But broader than that, we hope it will teach children to be enterprising by developing an entrepreneurial spirit by selling their produce to our customers.”

Denise Kelly

FREDERICK CARLTON “CARL” LEWIS was born July 1, 1961 and is an American former track and field athlete and United Nations good will ambassador, who won 10 Olympic medals including 9 gold, and 10 world championship medals, including 8 gold. His career spanned from 1979 when he first achieved a world ranking to 1996 when he last won an Olympic title and subsequently retired. His accomplishments have led to numerous accolades, including being voted “Sportsman of the Century” by the international athletics committee. The reasons for me bringing this powerhouse of a man to your attention is because he is an amazing example of a strong masculine man with a fantastic physique who just happens to be a vegan. More and more triathletes and marathoners are showing that it is possible to be super strong on a plant-based regime, not only for improving their athletic performance, but for overall health too. Plant foods are easier to digest, so therefore do not slow athletes down in the way highly processed foods and animal–based foods do.

Of course, we all know that athletes need higher amounts of protein because of the strenuous exercise they are participating in daily. However, it is possible that these

needs are met with plant foods, which put much less strain on the body and give it more power to recover and repair correctly and efficiently. Approximately 20 grams of protein should be consumed within 30 minutes of completing a workout to support muscle growth and prevent muscle soreness. A green smoothie with hemp milk and hemp protein powder is just one way to get 20 grams of healthy plant protein following a workout. Calories need to be higher too, so nuts, seeds, avocados, dried fruit etc are all rich sources of healthy calories.

If you are looking at cutting down the processed meats and foods then just keep it in your mind that eating a variety of plant foods will give you all the protein you need. A complete protein contains all eight essential amino acids in correct proportions. Amino acids help our bodies create and repair tissue

Get your peak performance

and break down food in our digestive system. Lentils for example are low in essential amino acid tryptophan, but grains, nuts and seeds are high in tryptophan. As long as legumes, grains, plenty of fresh salads and veggies, nuts and seeds are a part of your regular diet, complete protein is easily made in your body….and guess what? You will feel amazing, you skin will look fabulous, cellulite will disappear, your brain will be sharp and you will have more energy than you know what to do with.

Denise Kelly is a BANT (British association of Nutritional therapists) registered Naturopathic Nutritional Therapist. She writes Nutrition Programs for a variety of organisations and has a private practise in Chichester, West Sussex and is the founder of K4 Fit Kidz. Tel: 01243 528040 www.denisekelly.co.uk

Make your meal times sacred

IT’S EASY to have meal times turn into a business… quick to eat so that we can move on to the next activity! Perhaps in the chaos you’ve lost family meal times all together? There are real benefits to sitting down and enjoying a meal with the people you love. Meal times should be a candlelit, sacred celebration of the day’s events, a time for sharing stories, dreams and a time to grow as a family, or as a couple or simply just time to be.

When you cook with love and eat with attention, you are taking in the very stuff of life.

Nuts are a good source of healthy calories

Varicose veins: Seeking medical attention at an early stage is keyA COMMON misconception about varicose veins is that they only affect middle aged women and are primarily a cosmetic issue. However one vein expert, Mr Eddie Chaloner is challenging this view and encouraging men and women to seek medical attention for the condition at an earlier stage.

“Around 40% of women will develop varicose veins as some stage of their life, while in men this figure is thought to be around the 25 per cent mark,” Mr Chaloner commented. “Men with varicose veins tend to visit their GP or a specialist at a later stage of the condition – usually when the veins are very painful or when they are starting to cause skin damage. By this stage they are at a higher risk of developing the worst vein problems, such as venous ulcers.”

Vein expert Mr Chaloner, who practices at BMI The Blackheath Hospital, BMI Chelsfield Park and BMI The Sloane Hospital observes, “Women are far more willing to seek an opinion about varicose veins right away – probably because of the cosmetic aspect. Men on the other hand will often wait until the problem becomes too painful to ignore and this can lead to skin damage or leg wounds, known as ulcers, that won’t heal as a result. Even fit and athletic men are susceptible to venous disease - the important thing is to seek an expert opinion on your varicose veins as soon as symptoms present themselves.”

Varicose veins develop when the small valves inside the veins stop working properly.

In a healthy vein, deoxygenated blood flows smoothly to the heart and the blood is prevented from flowing backwards by the series of tiny one way valves that open and close to let blood through. However, when the valves weaken or are damaged, the blood can flow backwards and pool in the vein, causing it to be swollen and enlarged. Any vein in the body can become varicose, but they are most common in the leg because of the extra pressure put on this part of the body from standing and walking.

“Varicose veins are a medical issue and not solely an issue of vanity. If not dealt with at an early stage the condition will slowly deteriorate. The longer someone waits for treatment, the more extensive the condition becomes and resulting treatment is more troublesome.”

Spring escapesIF THERE was ever a time to get just slightly obsessive about clothes; it’s the day before you go on holiday.

You need to know your baggage allowances before you start planning. Pick a suitcase that is light and sturdy. Consider a recognisable pattern or grab some bright ribbon so you can spot your case at the reclaim.

Consider what activities you’ll be doing and think in outfits. If it’s a beach holiday pull out your swimsuits and then work out three or four outfits that you can wear over them during the day. Don’t ‘pick and pack’, it makes editing tricky. Pop everything you’re considering on the bed and pack from there. Be ruthless and remove anything you are not completely set on taking. If you don’t feel comfortable wearing it here, you’re unlikely to wear it on holiday. You can buy everyday items at your destination, wash clothes or use

laundry services while you are away.Pack in this order: shoes and wash

bags around the edge of the case – both inside carrier bags, which you can use as laundry bags once you’re away. Then pack an evening bag containing all of your jewellery so it doesn’t snag on clothes. Pack swimwear and underwear in fabric bags. Fold or roll pieces that don’t need hanging and place on top. Keep everything else on hangers. Wrap a rubber band around the hangers then slip a garment bag over the clothes. Fold over and lay on top of everything else. Wrap gadgets amongst clothing to protect them and pop anything that may leak into individual sandwich bags.

Remember to list every item you pack and then pop the list on top, ready to check the items off with a different coloured pen as you pack to come back home (sob!).

All I need is… SLEEP

By Becky Edwards (Children’s Centre Co-ordinator) and Nicki Graham (Family Outreach Work) NOTHING can quite prepare you for the exhaustion and sleep deprivation that comes with parenthood.

Newborn babies sleep for between 18 to 20 hours a day but often feels more like 18-20 minutes! By 6 months old, most babies should be able to sleep through the night -but the truth is, most of them don’t. As parents of young children, we spend our nights being woken by our baby’s crying or our toddler calling out for us. 50% of under 5’s wake up in the night and as a result, so do 50% of their parents!

There is no perfect solution to get your children to sleep better. Every child and family is different and you have to find the way that works best for you. But there are a few things that can help.• Try putting your baby in their cot just

before they fall asleep. That way they will learn to fall asleep without you holding them so that they can soothe themselves back to sleep without you in the night. (Make sure their feet are touching the end of the cot, they are lying on their back and they are not too hot- Sudden Infant Death Syndrome- SIDS, guidelines).• Create a good bedtime routine e.g. a bath after dinner, some quiet time together on the sofa, reading some stories in the bedroom and a goodnight kiss before leaving the room. That way a child goes to bed feeling calm and relaxed and they should fall asleep more quickly and easily.• If they do wake up a lot in the night, try to give them as little attention as possible. Don’t make eye contact with them, talk in a calm voice using as few words as possible. If you do stay in the room, stay next to them without touching them. That way they learn that just because they are awake, doesn’t mean it’s time to play!

But even if you try all these things, there will be nights when the only way any of you can get any sleep, is if your baby is in bed with you. (Remember never let this happen if you have been smoking, drinking or taking drugs, SIDS guidelines). There will be mornings when you wake up and your toddler is sleeping peacefully next to you.

And that’s ok if it means you have all slept better.

Getting enough sleep is important however old you are. It’s the time when you

process what has happened during the day and re-charge your batteries for tomorrow. It’s hard for you and your children to cope if you are exhausted. So try to sleep when your young children nap during the day. Even if it means you don’t get all the housework done!

VirgoSometimes you think too much and this is one of those times. Things that have happened in the past keep

popping into your mind this week acting as a constant reminder

of what could go wrong. You have a powerful brain use it effectively and it will bring its rewards but only if you don’t dwell on the past.

LibraNew relationships will be forged this week and one may possibly be of the romantic

kind. Odd that because you will not see this one coming.

It will take you quite by surprise because this person is not your “type”!! They may not be what you think you want but they could give you the love you need. Have faith.

ScorpioNow I know things haven’t been exactly glorious for you over the last couple of weeks but you really must

stop looking at the glass as half empty. Things will improve on all

fronts soon but in the meantime life is not so bad, focus on the good in it and be patient good times are ahead.

SagittariusThis is a good time for work related projects. You know you can do better than some of

your colleagues and are eager

to show this. You are full of verve and are in one of your unstoppable moods. Just remember to bring others along with you if you want to make progress and not enemies. But stay upbeat.

CapricornWe know you are sure footed but sometimes the other side of you just wants to break free. It seems like the last few

weeks have been all about work and very little about fun. Time for a

change. Listen to your heart a little more this week you will feel and inner contentment and a renewed sense of purpose.

AquariusYou are looking good and don’t you know it! You are feeling good too. All this makes for a great week. Collaborative

projects are well favoured as you turn on the charm but don’t

get too bogged down in the here and now make sure you secure some future commitments. No point wasting a good thing is there?!!

PiscesAll becomes clear this week. You are going through a period of self examination

and reflection. Childhood memories flood in. But you know

that these memories even the painful ones are character building and will help you create the new future you not only desire but because of past experience you now have developed the skills to design.

AriesYou are the master of your own destiny. All that inner reflection and soul searching

must now be put to good use. You are full of energy this

week and able to make a start on the changes you secretly desire but perhaps fear too. This is no time to be cowardly for fortune favours the brave.

TaurusI know you crave comfort and security but life is full of ebb and flow, light and dark,

beginnings and endings. We are just small pawns on a

cosmic board. Something is about to end for something new to begin. So let go of the past, keep your memories, time to move and prepare for new adventures.

GeminiI know the first day of Spring was some time ago but it only just feels like it to you

this week as change is afoot. A house move or makeover

may be on the cards or it could be a career move. Whatever it is your environment will be looking very different in the near future. Stay focused.

CancerNow I am not saying all your dreams will come true this week but what I am saying

is that some of those work grumbles will be disappearing

and will be replaced by a more harmonious phase. Ask and you shall receive! Be open, honest and direct and you may be pleasantly surprised at the response that you will get.

LeoYou know you have talent and you know you are strong but you also know that in order to make

the most of these positive qualities you need to be goal orientated. You

will see your ultimate objectives with greater clarity this week. Keep the faith you know what you want particularly on the emotional front.

How to look after your garden furniture

MAKING the most of your outdoor space is key to enjoying life alfresco and thanks to leading garden furniture supplier, Alexander Rose, we can now ensure our garden furniture is kept in tip top condition for many years to come. Most timbers, e.g. Teak, Roble and Mahogany have a natural oil content which acts as a natural preservative and will mellow to a silvery grey colour in 3-6 months.

Treatment is recommended for use on softwood timbers such as pine which will eventually degrade if it has not been treated with a preservative. Severe stains such as spillages, bird droppings and mildew etc., can be removed using a suitable cleaner.

Below are recommendations and suggestions from Alexander Rose for ensuring the maintenance and care of your garden investment.

Q. Should I treat my garden furniture? Do I have to?

A. It really does depend on the type of wood your furniture is made from. Pine

needs to be treated with a quality oil to ensure it remains in good condition. However, hardwoods such as Iroko, Mahogany, Teak and Albizzia don't have to be treated and if left in their natural finish they will eventually mellow to a beautiful silver/grey colour.

Q. Is it OK if my wooden furniture cracks, and can I prevent it from happening?

A. Small cracks will naturally occur on the

end grain of timber over a period of time. This is normal. Sometimes the cracks will open wider, especially in hot weather. They will close when it rains or the temperature cools. This cracking will not affect the stability of the furniture and is a particular quality of the weathering process of timber. Furniture can be cleaned using soapy water and a stiff brush; allow it to dry fully before the application of any treatments.

Q. I want to keep the 'new' look rather than the 'weathered' look to my garden furniture, what should I do?

A. All timber furniture will 'weather' if left outside so if you want to keep it looking 'like new' you'll need to treat it soon after purchase. You should choose a quality outdoor furniture oil and this should be reapplied every year. If your furniture is dirty it should be cleaned with a specialist product, such as the Alexander Rose Cleaner product and then the furniture oil should be applied.

Q. My furniture is covered in stains, mildew and bird droppings - what should I do?

A. Stains can be removed with the Alexander Rose Cleaner product. Alternatively, you can sand the furniture down using a medium grit sand paper.

Q. Can I leave my cushions out overnight?A. If your cushions are made using water

resistant fabric, they may be left out during a shower or overnight without worry. However, be aware that 'water resistant' means that they are not totally waterproof; so long term exposure to water is not recommended.

Q. Will my synthetic rattan furniture last long outside?

A. If looked after well, rattan furniture will weather well and provide years of comfort. Make sure you choose a quality synthetic rattan, such as Viro. Viro is a superior quality polyethylene fibre. High flexibility, tensile strength, durability, as well as UV and weather resistance distinguish the characteristics of this fibre. Viro can also be washed with warm soapy water and is pest and fungus free.

Q. How should I look after my stainless steel garden furniture?

A. All grades of stainless steel will stain and discolour over time and is never completely maintenance free. In order to maintain the original high quality finish, and to protect your furniture from tarnishing, you'll need to keep it clean and polish it when necessary. The Alexander Rose 2 in 1 Stainless Steel Cleaner and Protective Polish can be used on all stainless steel furniture to keep it in good condition.

Save a deposit for your first home in just six monthsPETER EDMONDS, independent mortgage advisor at Central Financial Services, discusses how first time buyers could save a deposit and purchase their first home in much less time than money househunters think:

“First time buyers have had it tough in recent years haven’t they? We are constantly hearing of a whole generation shut out of the property market thanks to sky-high deposits, strict lending criteria and an increase in living costs, meaning saving is never an option. Many have cried out to the bank of mum and dad whilst others have assigned themselves to a lifetime of renting, but is buying your first home really an unachievable dream?

“Raising a deposit remains the main concern for the majority of first time buyers and with the average deposit now standing at £26,000 this comes as no surprise. For many the thought of saving this vast sum seems completely unachievable but what many first time buyers don’t know is that by purchasing a new build home and using one of the government’s schemes they could reduce this cost by approximately 75 per cent.

“Under both the government’s equity loan scheme, FirstBuy, and the mortgage indemnity scheme, NewBuy, purchasers need a deposit of just five per cent (you would still own 100 per cent of your new home). At Crest Nicholson’s Park Central development in Birmingham city centre, for example, these schemes help reduce the required deposit to just £5,850 for a one bedroom apartment, marking a significant saving off the typical

20 per cent deposit which would be £23,400 for the same property. For many, a five per cent deposit is much more achievable and what’s more, it may take much less time than you originally think to raise this amount – in fact there’s the possibility that you could purchase your first home in just six months.

“The first step is to sensibly review your incomings and outgoings. For instance a couple saving for a deposit and currently living in rented accommodation in Birmingham city centre, paying £300 each for accommodation per calendar month, would need sufficient disposable income to put away approximately £500 each every month. This may still sound a little far-fetched but the key is to review what outgoings are essential and what you can live without. For example, do you grab a coffee every morning on your way to work? Removing this from you daily routine could save nearly £100 each month. Additionally, just having one car per household could result in a saving of £60 on insurance and £125 on petrol costs. Replacing a gym membership with outdoor runs, quitting smoking, replacing your normal shop with ‘value’ equivalents, and recycling an old outfit for a night out could save a combined cost of £300 – thus making that monthly saving of £500

much more obtainable.“As well as helping to lower the deposits

needed, the government has also taken pro-active measures in helping first time buyers to secure a mortgage with its First for Lending scheme. Best buy mortgages are being offered at record low rates – even for those purchasing with smaller deposits – as lenders take advantage of the £80bn being provided by the Bank of England to pass onto borrowers. Of course, the best rates are

still reserved for those purchasers with big deposits but things are certainly looking up for those further down the property ladder, meaning this could be the perfect time for first time buyers to start hunting for their dream home.

“Set realistic goals, familiarise yourself with your options and take advantage of the help out there – owning your own home is achievable, and in much less time than you might think!”

Renault continues road safety scheme supportRENAULT is once again backing an award-winning safety scheme aimed at reducing the number of serious road accidents in the UK’s fastest county. Safety initiative CarKraft, based at the home of the British Grand Prix, is helping to cut successfully the number of people killed and seriously injured in Northamptonshire, and this year’s programme gets motoring on Saturday 12th May.

Renault joins Northamptonshire County Council, Adrian Flux Insurance and newest partner, The AA, in lending its support to the popular programme at the Porsche Experience Centre at Silverstone.

Tutors running the events, with more dates scheduled for 9th June and 7th September, are all highly qualified motoring professionals with years of experience of both motor racing and advance driving techniques. Each course costs under £50 and offers drivers a dynamic mix of workshops, allowing them to experience driving on simulated, challenging conditions at a state of the art, purpose built facility. It also explores the main causes of car crashes, speeding and seat belts.

Drivers aged over 17 will experience the Kick Plate and Ice Hill, which both generate the effect of a loss of wheel traction to explore car control under

extreme road conditions, and get an assessed drive on public carriageways with a police driver, who will give tips on advance techniques.

New partners AA Driving School will be supplying dual-controlled tuition cars and instructors for those drivers without a licence.

The CarKraft driver improvement scheme started in 2001 and was aimed at young drivers aged 15 to 24 years old. It was awarded a Prince Michael International Road Safety Award in 2006 and since then more than 3,000 people have benefited from the unique experience which helped reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured in Northamptonshire to an all time low in 2011.

Last year CarKraft expanded to include non-drivers between the ages of 15 and 25 and licence holders of all ages from anywhere in the UK. The schemes have been hugely popular, regularly over-subscribed and have attracted numerous best practice visits by other local authorities.

Morning or afternoon sessions cost ?49.99, the same price as 2012, and last for around four-and-a-half hours. To book, or for more information, visit carkraft.info.

Over 13.5 million UK motorists can’t change a flat tyre without helpTECH SAVVY youngsters may be able to master the myriad functions of a smartphone or tablet, but when it comes to knowing and maintaining their cars, OAPs leave younger drivers standing at the lights.

48 per cent, or over 13.5 million UK motorists, would not be able to change a flat tyre without help, and that figure includes three quarters (75%) of women drivers. However, new research carried out by Gocompare.com has revealed that you're more likely to see a young driver struggling to change a flat tyre than you are an OAP.

The study, carried out among over 1,400 randomly selected UK drivers, found that only 46 per cent of young drivers said they would be able to change a flat tyre by themselves, compared to 49 per cent of drivers aged 65+, despite the physical nature of the task.

The research also revealed that younger drivers were consistently the least knowledgeable about the features and functions of their car and how to carry out very basic maintenance tasks. Out of 15 questions based on the drivers' knowledge of their cars and their ability to carry out basic maintenance tasks, the

over 65's outscored 18 to 24 year olds on every single question. Older drivers aged 65+ not only knew more about their cars than 18 to 24 year olds but they would also be more likely to be able to carry out tasks such as checking the engine oil level, changing a headlight bulb, refilling the windscreen washer reservoir and topping up the coolant/anti-freeze.• 54% of young (18 to 24 year old) drivers

could not change a flat tyre without help

• 17% of young drivers do not know if their car has a spare wheel

• 50% of young drivers have not read their car's manual

• 34% of young drivers do not know how to use all of the controls and features of their car

• 15% of young drivers don't know how to turn their fog lamps on

• 29% of young drivers don't understand all of the dashboard display and warning lights in their car

• 64% of young drivers don't know how to change a bulb for a headlamp, tail light or brake light

• 30% of young drivers don't know if their car is front wheel drive, rear wheel drive or 4x4.

if Liverpool win but after the defeat on saturday the faithful will be hoping confidence isn’t dented especially with Ipswich, West Ham and Birmingham all on the horizon.

It has to be said though, every time Gus Poyet and his team have been tested since he took over, he seems to apply the midas touch and they pass with flying colours. It may be the most high profile week of his fledgling managerial career, and, like Albion fans, he will be hoping that after the 7 days and 3 games, it’s safe passage to the last 16 and 6 points in the bag.

Whenever you look at games in isolation they have a certain significance but when you look at the 7 days and 3 games together this period could become a pivotal point in the season.

SO JUST a handful of games to go and you certainly feel it’s going down to the wire.

Both Albion and Forest have drawn their last three games to keep a faltering Leicester at bay. Palace have struggled and all three will feel they can catch them. Bolton are probably the in form side and making a late push so it would appear to be 3 from 5.

All those clubs in contention will consider themselves deserving of a place in the Premier League.

Whatever happens over the coming weeks, these last few days have certainly provided a reminder to all sets of fans that a sense of perspective should be observed.

There have been stories to remind us of how things can go horribly wrong.

Portsmouth are finally owned by the fans after an appearance at the High Court this week, finally putting the years of struggle, administration and mismanagement behind them. Then there is Bury who require an estimated £1 Million just to stay alive. Coventry, Leeds... the list goes on.

Of course all supporters will be hoping that this is their year. (Most Chief Execs and

Chairmen will be praying it is with the extra money on offer!)

However, should the Seagulls fall short this season, they should be content in the knowledge that those at the helm won’t adopt a boom or bust strategy.

The debate rages on over whether Financial Fair Play is good or bad thing for football clubs. There were 6 dissenters in

City win to boost survival hopesSaturday 6 April 2013 Sussex County Football League Div 1Ringmer 1 –2 Chichester City By Chester Browton

CITY produced a decent all-round performance to beat Ringmer at the Caburn, repeating the score-line from when the sides met back in December.

City were missing Julian Boniface and Pau Cassasa through injury, while the Ringmer line-up was nowhere near full-strength.

It took just three minutes for Chichester to take the lead, with the Ringmer defence not yet fully awake and taking their eyes off the ball for a thrown-in. This allowed Tom Smith to curl in a cross-shot the sailed over the motionless keeper.

Some solid work by the City back-line prevented Ringmer getting near the target for the remainder of the first-half, but three minutes after the interval Marc Whiteman – so often a thorn in Chichester’s side over the

years – burst through and beat keeper Matt Dann to equalise.

The match was developing into a midfield battle with little goalmouth action, although Ringmer’s Glen Matten came close with a 25-yard free-kick that went marginally wide.

Morgan Forry twice had one-on-ones with the Ringmer keeper but didn’t capitalize.

But then in the 83rd minute, Chichester got the break they needed. The Ringmer players appealed for a foul during a City attack, but play continued with a skirmish inside the home penalty area and sub Dan Smith kicked the ball into the net to claim victory.

The aggrieved Mark Price showed off three stud marks in his leg after the game, with the late incident apparently not spotted by the officials.

With Worthing United and AFC Uckfield already virtually condemned to the bottom-two placings in County League Division One, Chichester are involved in a three-way battle

to avoid the other relegation spot along with Shoreham and Dorking Wanderers.

And while Shoreham were soundly beaten at Lingfield, Dorking’s shock success over championship-chasing East Preston means

Chichester are still playing catch-up as the season enters its final four weeks.
