AN INVESTIGATION is underway after a helicopter, which was based at Goodwood, crashed at its airfield on Thursday (12 Feb).Emergency services attended the scene after the helicopter came down during a training exercise.A statement released by Goodwood said: “An incident occurred on Thursday, 12 February 2015 at Goodwood Aerodrome involving a Robinson R22 helicopter based at Goodwood and operated by Phoenix Helicopters. The aircraft was carrying two people when it came to rest on its side during a training exercise. No-one was injured in the incident. Emergency services were called to the scene and arrived on-site within 11 minutes of the incident having taken place. The Air

Accident Investigation Branch has been advised of the incident.”It’s the second time in just under 6 years that an incident has happened at the airfield involving helicopters. In May 2009 an airfield worker was badly injured

by a helicopter blade after it flew off a chopper when it crashed on take-off.The 18-year-old man suffered serious leg injuries and had to undergo emergency surgery after the 2009 accident.

In 1605 the owner of Midhurst’s Cowdray House, Anthony-Maria Browne, 2nd

Viscount Montagu, was briefly arrested in connection with the Gunpowder Plot.

He was suspected as a plotter because he briefly employed Guy Fawkes as a footman

and stayed away from Parliament on 5 November following a warning from Robert Catesby. He is buried in Midhurst Church.

Interesting snippets of information about Chichester!

The following day, the

Prime Minister welcomed the

announcement of an all-new Rolls-

Royce model during his visit to

the company’s head office and

manufacturing plant at Goodwood.

The Prime Minister was

presented with a letter announcing

the news by Torsten Mueller-

Oetvoes, Chief Executive Officer,

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.

The Prime Minister said: “Rolls-

Royce is a British manufacturing

success story and the decision

to build their new model at

Goodwood, reaffirming their

commitment to the South of

England, is a vote of confidence

in our long-term economic plan

to back business, create jobs and

build a more resilient economy.

This Government is backing our

automotive industry which is going

from strength to strength, providing

financial security to almost 150,000

hardworking people across the

country and adding £14 billion to

our economy.”

The Prime Minister toured the

Home of Rolls-Royce, meeting

with many of the company’s

skilled craftsmen and women and

learnt about the company’s unique

bespoke hand craftsmanship.

The visit concluded with the

Prime Minister hosting an open

forum with over 800 employees,

during which he congratulated

the company on five consecutive

years of growth and success and

the quadrupling of sales and

production. He also commended

the marque’s championing of

future talent through its industry-

leading Apprenticeship, Graduate

and Student programmes and

welcomed the company’s expansion

plans.

Torsten Mueller-Oetvoes,

Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-

Royce Motor Cars, said: “We were

privileged to welcome the Prime

Minister to the Home of Rolls-

Royce at Goodwood and I thank

him for his recognition of our

outstanding success over the past

five years. His positive words were

warmly received by the craftsmen

and women who met him during his

tour of our Manufacturing Plant.”

He continued, “The all-new Rolls-

Royce model, announced today,

will herald a new chapter in the

remarkable British manufacturing

success story that is Rolls-Royce

Motor Cars. It will guarantee long

term sustainable growth, secure

investment and jobs for the future,

and ensure that Rolls-Royce Motor

Cars remains at the pinnacle of

British luxury manufacturing.”

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars recently

revealed record sales results for

a fifth consecutive year, with

more than 4000 cars sold globally

during 2014, the first time in the

company’s 111-year history. The

company has created over 200

new permanent jobs in the past 18

months to meet customer demand,

particularly for Bespoke cars. The

number of employees at the Home

of RollsRoyce has doubled in the

last five years and now stands at

1500, primarily in skilled or highly

skilled jobs.

Further evidence of Rolls-Royce’s

commitment to expansion in Great

Britain came last September when

the company announced plans for

its new Technology and Logistics

Centre at Bognor Regis, close to

Goodwood. Construction of the new

30,000m2 facility, which is due to

open in 2016, is well underway with

around 200 existing and new roles

in technical and logistics functions

to be based at the Centre.

A27The roadside verges of the A27 Arundel-Worthing are solid with litter. Plastic drinks bottles and cellophane sandwich cartons mostly. It’s motorists who lower the passenger window and chuck it out, they’re pigs. I blame electric windows. The culprits are men driving alone; in the olden days they couldn’t physically reach across and wind down the passenger window so they waited until the service station and put it in the bin.

SALESSales are on. The ads always say “Must end Tuesday”. There’s even a countdown timer on internet offers, where having bought a shirt you get a window that says you can get 10 pairs of socks for £9.99, but you must click “Buy” within 5 minutes, and there’s a counter like the one on the bomb at the end of a James Bond, ticking down.

CHICHESER PIRATES

The culprits are men driving alone

Tommy BoydLegendary TV

and radio personality

They had to deal with Nazi bombs around here, German spies and the Romans. But not the Vikings, or pirates. Which would you like to be? A spy, an invader or a buccaneer? I think pirates, yes? Not just because of Johnny Depp, but because the other things depend on lies and control, while pirates lean towards freedom.

COUNTDOWNSWe are drawn to the idea that time is running out. Dull TV make-over shows add a touch of fake drama by going “They’ve still got to lay the crazy paving and Beverley’s flight from Malaga touches down in two hours!”

TIME IS RUNNING OUTTime is running out for everyone and everything, we don’t want to go, or be forgotten.

CHICHESTER’S “LAVANT HALL”A very Chichester street protest. A senior gentleman stands where they are building a sizeable Care Home north of Chi. He’s got a big sign protesting that the home is to be called “Lavant Hall”. His point is that Lavant Hall exists already in the beautiful village of Lavant. (Actually it’s “Lavant Memorial Hall” technically). The protesters say that deliveries will go to the wrong hall. Bit outdated

that, now that deliveries are post coded. In reality they’re justifiably worried about being anonymised. The Care home people (based in the SW) are asking for local people’s views; mind they understandably don’t know what’s local: the new Care Home isn’t in Lavant and it isn’t a Hall either. So they could run with the inexactitude and call it the Gaza Strip Nigel Farage Memorial Mosque, which would escape local protest, and widen potential custom.

COMEDY POLITICIANSIn other European countries a lot of comedians are nearing power. France and Italy especially: funny guys with a serious thought or two behind their campaign. My question is this; is Nigel Farage really a quasi-comedy character taking the p**s out of duplicitous politicians? If so, may he live forever. If not, may he be reborn as an impoverished Somalian who has no option but to risk death to scrape peanuts to send home that his family will live.

JOKEWhat did the pirate say at his 80th birthday party?

Aye Matey!

Burglaries at army cadet siteTHE ARMY CADET HALL at Chichester Road, Bognor, has been targeted by thieves for the second time in just over a month. Thieves broke in on 29 December and stole all the equipment and electrical goods to run the club. This has had an enormous impact on the staff and members..It is believed that the same suspects returned to try to break in again, between Monday evening (9 February) and Wednesday morning (11 February) but fortunately they were unable to get in on this occasion. If anyone saw anyone acting suspiciously or have been offered equipment relating to the Army

Cadets, please get in touch with Sussex Police, via [email protected] by calling 101, quoting serial 528 of 11/2.You can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously via 0800 555 111.PC Jackie Shears said: “The burglary came soon after the cadets had achieved an outstanding award from the Lord Lieutenant of West Sussex for raising £3000 for charity.“Dave Merrett, Sergeant Instructor at the site, says it is not the staff that lose out from these thieves, but it directly affects the young Army Cadets who look forward to the activities that they do each week.”

SUSSEX POLICE have made a decision on policy on officers wearing charity badges or patches on their uniform. A decision was taken locally in West Sussex to ask an officer to remove a Union Jack badge, which has been suggested is in support of charity COPS (Care of Police Survivors). However it was not part of the official uniform set out in the Uniform and Appearance Standards policy. Sussex Police stated that the public expect us to look smart and professional. Standards regarding what our officers wear need to be maintained otherwise officers and staff could end up wearing a whole array of badges for different

worthy causes and the uniform would no longer be a uniform.Assistant Chief Constable Steve Barry, who heads Sussex Police’s uniforms committee, said: “I have met with a number of interested parties across the Force (February 17), including the Sussex Police Federation and Unison, to discuss matters that have arisen as a result of the Thin Blue Line badge.“We are agreed that while the wearing of a discreet badge or pin is acceptable under our uniform policy, the size of the Thin Blue Line patch (70 x 38mm) is not. The emblem itself is appropriate when taken as representative of the charitable organisation, Care

Of Police Survivors, which is an organisation we support.“The policy exists to ensure that there is a standard professional appearance for our uniformed officers and we feel that the size of this particular version of the badge would detract from that standard.”

FOR THE FIFTH year in a row West Sussex County Council has agreed to freeze its share of the council tax bill. The decision means that residents will continue to pay £1,161.99 for a Band D property for all county services. As well as the tax freeze, councillors approved more than £500million pounds worth of investment in key services - as well as an additional £138 million capital investments. The Future West Sussex Plan – a blueprint for what the authority will deliver over the next four years – was also approved.Michael Brown, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Finance, said: “We are investing in our services to benefit residents, helping those who fall on hard times, and all whilst continuing to bear down on the burden of local taxation and coping with Government funding cuts.“This isn’t a budget about cuts, it’s a budget about investment for the future and it’s one that reflects prudent financial planning. We have a major programme of capital investment – none of which requires us to borrow a penny in funding from any third party.”Key capital investment next year includes:•£6.4million investment in high speed broadband capability across

the county;•A further £15m in the Better Roads programme to improve many of the county’s residential and rural roads;•Significant investment in infrastructure improvements, including £20m investment in economic development, to ensure businesses can flourish;Among the measures included in the revenue budget for next year are:•£5m to alleviate pressure on the Council’s adult services’ budget arising mainly from the increasing number of older residents;•£0.9min support of the Local Welfare Provision Fund which helps families and individuals in crisis.•£5m further investment in the Council’s Think Family programme, which helps get out of work parents back to work and helps those families who need a little bit more support.•£1.4m to address rising demand within the Child Disability budget•£0.9m more to meet the rising amount of waste requiring disposal.West Sussex County Council also approved plans that will see the authority save £68million over the next two years while protecting frontline services.Proposals agreed included renegotiating existing contracts, increasing the use of in-house fostering to reduce external

placement fees, redesigning internal services to create greater efficiencies and reducing the levels of maintenance needed on some rural roads – made possible thanks to the Better Roads investment programmeLouise Goldsmith, Leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “I truly believe that this is a budget that supports the Council’s key priority areas of giving children the best start in life, supporting and growing our local economy and helping our older population to remain independent in later life at the same time as keeping as much money as we can in people’s pockets.“It’s also a budget that, despite the savings we have to make, invests significantly in vital county council services at a time when they are greatly needed.”In her budget speech, Louise outlined key achievements of the authority over the last 12 months:They included:Supporting more than 600 parents back into work through the Think Family programme.Turning around the lives of 1165 families – ahead of time and within budget – through Think Family.Nearly 33,000 under 5s and their families have been through WSCC Children and Family Centres.Filling 15,000 potholes and replacing 1.8 million square miles

of road as part of the Better Roads programme.Cleaning 77,000 gullies and replacing more than 13,000 lamp columnsHelping to make better, faster broadband a reality for 26,000 more homes and businesses as we continue to roll out this exciting technology across the county.Through the Be The Business initiative, helping to create 88 jobs and safeguard a further 170.Recycling nearly 100,000 tonnes of residents’ waste.Ensuring that 6,300 adults received adult social care that 17,000 adults with learning disabilities were supported.Beating a target of 2500 installations of assistive technology, which means elderly residents are able to live at home for longer in safety.

Issuing 4.2m items through the library service, which has been used by 283,000 of residents.Saving 29 tonnes of CO2 through council buildingsCarrying our more than 20,000 health checks for residents aged 40-74Undertaking 300 inquests, registering 10,000 births and nearly 8000 deathsLouise added: “We are in a good place to meet head on the challenges that the next few years will bring.“The West Sussex Plan will guide everything that this council does in the next four years and give our residents a yardstick by which we should be judged.”The West Sussex Plan can be read in full at www.westsussex.gov.uk

Record success for Oakwood Year 6 pupils!

YEAR SIX pupils at Oakwood

School are celebrating record results

this week, with an unprecedented

100% pass rate in their entrance

exams to secondary schools. In all,

50 entrance tests were taken and

as well as the flawless pass rate,

nine scholarships and awards have

also been offered to the Chichester

schoolchildren, ranging from sports,

music and all-rounder scholarships

to English awards.

Gill Proctor, Oakwood’s

Headteacher, is full of pride. She

said: “These wonderful results are

the best ever for Oakwood and are

a true reflection of everything we

do. I am especially pleased that

scholarships have been offered, not

only for academic success, but also

sport and music. We pride ourselves

on giving our pupils opportunities

and encouragement in every area of

the curriculum and it is wonderful

to have such a broad range of talents

recognised in this way.

“The Year 6 children all deserve

huge congratulations on their

positive attitude and hard work.

Equally, I would like to thank all the

staff in school who have encouraged,

challenged and instilled confidence

into the pupils thus allowing them

to perform to the very best of their

abilities.

“The glowing praise that I have

received from the secondary schools

is a testament to the children, and to

what we do here at Oakwood.”

HUNDREDS of new school places are to be created across West Sussex after the government announced a significant funding boost for the County Council.

Just over £57 million is being provided following a review of school capacity.

The County Council had expected to receive £16,479,107 over the next couple of years. However, a further capital grant allocation of £40,698,961 was announced last week bringing the total amount of investment to £57,178,068 over the next three years.

The extra allocations are specifically targeted at local authorities who are facing significant and unexpected increases in pupil numbers. The funding will support the provision of additional school places across the county.

West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, Jeremy Hunt, said: “We are extremely pleased to see that the Department for Education (DfE) has recognised some of the

challenges ahead for counties facing

a growth in pupil numbers.

“This funding will provide

much needed capital resources to

enable the provision of extra school

places over the next three years.

The additional money will allow

us to plan ahead and make good

investment decisions on how to

provide the facilities we need for

our children in the future.

“At this stage the exact details of

how the money will be spent have

yet to be finalised, but once we have

all the information from the DfE we

will be able to move forward with

our planning for these extra places

across the county.”

The announcement comes after

the good news last week that three

schools in West Sussex were part

of 277 nationally that will have at

least one of their buildings or blocks

rebuilt or refurbished in the 2015-

20 period as part of the Priority

Schools Building Programme

(PSBP2). Further details about this

work are expected later in the year.

Multi million pound boost will create hundreds of new school places

Local woman to run 100k for military charityA WOMAN from West Sussex will be taking on a huge challenge this June by running 100k for Blind Veterans UK.Woppy Keeling, aged 55 and from Midhurst, is taking on the challenge, along with hundreds of others, as part of the Blind Veterans UK 100k London to Brighton event, being held this June.Woppy has always been a keen runner and wanted to push herself to the limit after participating as a walker in the military charity’s 100k London to Brighton challenge last year, completing the distance in 19 hours.Woppy says: “I’ve been running for about 35 years, I’ve done marathons, half marathons and all other kinds of events. I used to do cross country skiing and used running as a way to keep fit. Last year I walked the 100k and finished it in 19 hours, this year I hope to beat that!”Woppy will be running the 100k challenge together with Blind Veterans UK’s chairman Tim Davis.

Woppy added: “I wanted to run with someone I know and who I know to be good company. We’ve known each other for a long time as my husband, Andrew Keeling, was Blind Veterans UK’s chairman before Tim Davis.”It is not just through her husband’s affiliation with Blind Veterans UK Woppy feels strongly about supporting the charity. She says: “I was in the Army reserve and many members of my family, from my son to my great grandfathers, have been in the Armed Forces. Because of my strong connection to the Armed Forces I find it important to support military charities.“Blind Veterans UK does amazing work in supporting vision impaired ex-Service men and women. I’ve been fortunate that none of my family ever needed support but there are so many veterans and families that do. I want to help in any way I can.”Registration for the 100k, which will kick off in Putney

on Saturday 6th June, is currently open with a registration fee of £50 per participant for the 50km or £75 for the 100km. Teams taking part in the relay have a registration fee of £120. The all-inclusive entrance fee for participants includes hot food at three rest stops, snacks and refreshments along the route and a free event t-shirt.The event is Blind Veterans UK’s biggest annual fundraiser and takes walkers from a starting point in south London, along the banks of the Thames, through countryside paths in Surrey, Sussex and the North and South Downs to the charity’s centre in Ovingdean, Brighton.Woppy says: “Last year, when in the early hours of the morning we came up onto the South Downs, the sea and countryside looked beautiful in the early morning light and it was a great feeling knowing we were nearly there. I’m looking forward to more of the same this year!“All in all I would say that

it was a very memorable, extremely well organised and enjoyable event but also incredibly exhausting.”Blind Veterans UK needs 500 people to take part in the 100k, which will help the charity to continue to provide a lifetime’s practical and emotional support to over 4,000 veterans, regardless of when they served and how

they lost their sight. To find out more about Blind Veterans UK’s 100k challenge, and to sign up for the event, visit www.blindveterans.org.uk/100k.To support Woppy and Tim as they tackle the Blind Veterans UK 100k London to Brighton challenge, please visit www.justgiving.com/TheStrider

Allis Moss

Writer and broadcaster

No respite for the ripped-off

I’d just switched off the hoover and caught the tail-end of an interview on BBC Sussex with chirpy mid-morning presenter Danny Pike asking the MP for Hastings about switching energy companies.Last month it turned out that not only were we at the mercy of the Big Six energy providers but also the Big Five. The Big Five comparison websites, that is, who’ve been telling us for years about the cheapest insurance for our home and car with all their cutesy, cuddly marketing toys and ploys. And now that we’re being encouraged to search for cheaper tariffs to heat our homes, the hottest thing on the

energy front, too. Type in your postcode and we’ll tell you how to save hundreds on your bills by providing you with the cheapest quote. What’s not to like? What’s not to like is that MPs had to grill their bosses about the commission the comparison sites get paid when we choose certain gas and electricity deals. They’ve been accused of not showing us everything and reportedly “hiding” deals that don’t earn them commission. On the radio, Danny asked about new rules to stop this. How can we know we really will be shown the cheapest deals? The rules have been tightened so consumers can be more confident, replied the MP, twice.Yes, but how, and why should we be?Confidence is an elusive quality and the having of it places the onus on us.And if confidence is the currency we don’t just want more, we want complete in rules that force sites to play fair.Looking at the industry

watchdog, Ofgem’s website, you can see a rejigged ‘Confidence Code’ is being introduced at the end of March so comparison websites will have to show us all tariffs and be transparent about commissions. Why this is only being brought in after thousands are tied into new annual contracts having already switched because of sky-high winter bills is anyone’s guess.

Generation X

If it’s all too mercenary and you feel like setting sail for a pristine New World on the 21st century equivalent of the Mayflower, the latest Mars enterprise —last time it was a TV reality show — the Mars One Project, is still looking for pioneers willing to go all the way, one way, to the red planet. The private project has plans to set up a permanent human settlement on our neighbouring planet. Imagine looking though the perspex watching Earth rise and set on the horizon. And George Clooney won’t be on hand either. How long before

the marooned managed to find a way to build a ship and come back again? A generation? Two? In the meantime, I can see it all now, this young start-up community on a brave new world. Comparison websites offering the best deals for air. And water. But not all the deals. Black markets would thrive. Fifty Shades of Red showing at the cinema. Every night.

Interesting predicaments

We all laughed when heard fire chiefs say they are preparing for a backlash to the release of the film, Fifty Shades of Grey. Some four hundred members of the public have already rung in, incapacitated in, ahem, their handcuffs. I’m expecting applications to the fire service to go up. And while we’re on the subject of being prepared, I noticed there was one man who failed to take note of that old saying to make sure you always

had on clean underwear in case a major emergency should befall you. I speak of the man who had to jump stark naked from a third floor window onto the roof of a double decker bus, after the premises beneath caught fire. Just as well the bus-drivers called off their planned strike, wasn’t it?

And finally

Clumps of crocuses and the little Christmas tree, newly transplanted to the back garden, are growing in the winter sunshine. These brittle, clear days are amazing, aren’t they? Of an evening, whether you’re walking the dog, going to the pub or just going for a breather — if you can stand it, the air is sharp, invigorating and uplifting. There’s barely a wisp of cloud, just a blaze of stars to stir the soul, before you head back in and get that fire and kettle going.

The International Surfing Association (ISA) hosts the event where teams from across the globe come to represent their countries. The competition is expected to be tough, with many of the competitors full time pros, who compete all year round and on the SUP World Tour (www.isasurf.org/events/isa-world-supand-paddleboard-

As well as on the water training – both locally at the Witterings and down at the Cornwall/Devon area when conditions are better - she does a lot of gym training with local personal trainer Caroline Taylor (PINK PHYS), as well as swim and balance training. Holly has to manage her time carefully, as she is still a full-time student at Seaford

WEST SUSSEX COUNTY

COUNCILLORS raised £370 for a

local charity that supports anyone

affected by cancer.

Members of the authority wore

something red and donated funds

for Chichester-based charity

CancerWise last Friday (February

13).

Councillors held a raffle during

a break in Friday’s full council

meeting at Chichester College.

The event was spearheaded by

Council Chairman Amanda Jupp.

Amanda said: “The charity was

first brought to my attention by our

fellow councillor, Graham Tyler,

as it had been of great support to

his daughter, Emma, when she was

fighting the disease. Over the past

three years, she has raised over

£20,000 for the charity.

“I’m pleased that we were

able to do our bit to support this

worthwhile cause.”

The charity, based in Basin

Road, Chichester, provides

information, emotional support,

various therapies and practical

lifestyle advice to anyone affected

by cancer - not just cancer patients

but also families and carers.

Their services are available to

anyone living in West Sussex and

South-East Hampshire, and most

services are provided free of charge

or for a nominal donation.

Their new #cancerwiselove2

campaign is all about getting

people together to have fun, raise

funds and also raise awareness for

the charity.

Emma said: “CancerWise were a

true lifeline to me and my family. I

went through a really difficult time

after being diagnosed with cancer-

it came as a complete shock,

especially being 34 years old with

two young children.

“CancerWise was just incredible.

It was difficult to find somewhere

that didn’t have that ‘hospital’

setting. When I visited the drop-in

centre at Chichester, it was totally

different. I felt people understood

what I was going through, I was

able to open up and talk about how

I was feeling. It was exactly what I

needed.

“I am very grateful to all of the

officers and Councillors at the

County Council for getting involved

and supporting the campaign.”

Pothole repairs drop by two-thirds as Better Roads take effect

FEWER potholes have been reported in West Sussex so far this year compared to 12 months ago.West Sussex County Council fixed 1,475 potholes across the county in January 2015.Compared to January 2014, when the County Council had to repair 4,117 potholes, the number of defects that needed fixing has dropped by 64% in a year. The improved road surface is evidence the County Council’s Better Roads Programme is paying dividends. The two-year scheme, which began in April 2014, has targeted rural and residential roads in most need of repair.

This work, combined with drier weather compared to last year, has helped improve the state of the network.County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, Pieter Montyn, said: “The fall in the number of potholes that had to be fixed this January is an indicator our Better Roads strategy is working.“Of course, we are at mercy of the weather, but so far progress has been encouraging.“We rely on the public to be vigilant and wherever they see a pothole, they should report it to us so we can investigate.” Anyone can report a pothole online.Visit www.westsussex.gov.uk and click

the ‘Love West Sussex’ logo on the bottom left hand side of the homepage. You can report it by smartphone by downloading the free ‘Love West Sussex’ app either via the App stores or from [email protected] ‘Love West Sussex’ App is only to be used for reporting potholes and defects. For any other problems regarding potholes, call 01243 642105.Since the Better Roads Programme started in April 2014, 15,000 potholes and 1.8 million square miles of road have been replaced.Work starts this weekend on new footbridge in Chichester

WORK HAS STARTED to install a new footbridge in Chichester this week. The new footbridge, which was the subject of two previous public exhibitions, will be installed next to the Whyke roundabout near Kingsham.Highways Agency Asset Manager Peter Phillips said: “Safety is a top priority for the Highways Agency and by installing this footbridge we will be providing pedestrians with a safe way to cross the busy A27. This is great news for drivers and local residents.”Work to put the traffic management systems in place will start this weekend with an overnight closure of the A27 in

both directions from 8pm on Saturday 14 February until 6am on Sunday 15 February with traffic diverted via Chichester town centre. The remaining work will be carried out using narrow lanes and a 50mph speed limit on both carriageways of the A27, with some off peak lane closures. Some of the footpaths may be temporarily diverted.Full closures of the A27 will be also required when the bridge is lifted into place, which will be carried out overnight with a clearly signed diversion through Chichester. This is expected towards the end of the scheme and will be publicised in advance.

Working from home is better than working from an office for various reasons. A few of the many positives include being able to spend more time with loved ones, feeling like your own boss from the comfort of your own home and of course, the peace and quiet when you need it.

Now, it’s not suitable or indeed possible for everyone to be able to work from home but one lady from Chichester embracing the benefits is Laura Maddicks.

A chartered physiotherapist

for 20 years, Laura offers a comprehensive range of physiotherapy services to clients. Working from her light and airy treatment studio at home in Fishbourne, she certainly doesn’t have the worry of a boss looking over her shoulder! Having gained extensive experience in both the NHS and private sectors, Laura was keen to set up her own practice to provide a high standard of physiotherapy and exercise classes locally.

Her hard work ensured the completion of a Masters’ degree, gaining membership of the Musculoskeletal Association of Physiotherapists (MACP), which represents just 2% of the UK physiotherapists who have reached a recognised standard of excellence in neuro musculoskeletal physiotherapy.

Chichester College’s 50th Anniversary celebrations continue

AROUND 65 GUESTS enjoyed a highly sociable, fun-filled walk down memory lane and a delicious three course dinner (80s menu) prepared, cooked and served by the Catering and Hospitality students. The visit began with a Chichester campus show-around to highlight the most recent capital investments such as the New Construction Technologies Centre, opened by Andrew Tyrie MP, last year. One former student, last in College in the 1980’s, expressed amazement that the car park was now tarmacked and that the former ‘fag alley’, the corridor connecting the front of the college with the workshops and B Block, is now a bright covered walkway decorated with motivational quotes, students photographs and case studies… and a Subway! After the tour, guests mingled in Options Bistro for a drinks reception and photographic exhibition with slide show, featuring images from the last five decades; some were highly amused to

see photos of themselves with a lot more hair, others really didn’t look any different but many enjoyed catching up and exchanging stories from ‘back in the day’.The guests, who consisted of a mix of former staff who worked at the College in the 1980s and students who studied a range of subjects throughout the decade, as well as some current staff and other regular Goodwood customers, were welcomed by Principal, Shelagh Legrave, who gave them an overview of the College today and the celebration events taking place to celebrate the last 50 years. She paid tribute to the three former Principals: Mr SD Hughes, Dr James Gorrie and Dr Richard Parker, who had preceded her, as well as to the staff who have worked, and continue to work hard, to make the College a successful place to study. She expressed delight to have so many former students and staff back in the College and explained about the 50th Anniversary sculpture and souvenirs available to mark

the 50th year.Guests then made their way to the Goodwood Restaurant where, to the sounds of the 80s, they got stuck into their meal, accompanied by an 80s themed quiz and a Rubik’s Cube challenge. There was much praise for the quality of the menu produced by the students; former Science student, Debbie Williams, who now lectures in Law at Cambridge University, said: “Last week I ate at a five star venue with a Michelin star and I can honestly say the food prepared by the students tonight is even higher quality and better presented… I am very impressed and so pleased to be back in the College.”The 80’s event was the fourth event to be held in this 50th year and follows a launch event held in early October where Chair of Governors, Sir Paul Haddacks raised the 50th Anniversary flag and former Business Administration student, Amanda Jupp, current Chair of West Sussex County Council, unveiled the 50th

Anniversary sculpture plans. 1960s and 1970s themed dinners were also held in October and November.A spokesperson for the College said: “The 50th celebrations have become a wonderful catalyst to bring former staff and students together again. The College was recently graded ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted but at the heart of the College the dedication to helping students achieve is not new and where we are today is because of the efforts and commitment of many staff across five decades of learning; it’s wonderful to be able to celebrate this continuing passion with generations of staff and students.”The next 50th Anniversary event is a 1990s themed event on March 12th; places are booking quickly but if you would like to know more check out the 50th Anniversary website: www.chichester50.co.uk or call Claire Wilding in the Goodwood Restaurant on 01243 789024.

Rox makes history so be a part of it!ROX MUSIC AND ARTS have announced the dates for their 25th anniversary festival to be held on Bognor seafront on July 25th & 26th 2015 which will once more be held in and around the glorious grounds of The Royal Norfolk Hotel.

It was back in 1990 that an impromptu stage was put up on the Esplanade in Bognor Regis to give a chance for some local bands to ‘strut their stuff’ to a local audience of 150 people and ‘Rox on the Prom’ was born.

Nobody would have dreamed that nearly 25 years later, that very same organisation would be preparing for a rather special anniversary that marks the dedication of a group of volunteers that has stuck with the old adage - the show must go on!

The festival may have changed beyond all recognition but the underlying principle remains the same. Namely that the Rox Music and Arts Festival would provide a professional platform for local performers to showcase their undeniable talents to a willing audience and that the whole

community should come together for a FREE annual party.

Rox has taken their fair share of knocks and said ‘goodbye’ to a few much loved colleagues along the way but there is a fire that burns among the Rox crew and a passion that has shown itself on many an occasion - none less so than from Mr Steve Goodheart, Chairman and co-founder of the Rox Organisation. When asked about his thoughts as they approach their 25th anniversary, Steve said “It’s been amazing, the trip started with Terry Slade and me creating a pop-up venue on the prom! Without the help of the volunteers, local councils and business we would never have got to where we are now. I also know that without the support of the trustees, ROX would not be as strong as it is. So if you want to get involved the door is always open!”

As with all event organisers in the town, ‘funding’ is a major issue and with more and more events popping up, this becomes even tougher. Steve says, “It’s great to see events happening in and around Bognor as they play an

important part in boosting the town both in terms of the economy and the ‘feel-good factor’ for the community. However, there is only a certain amount of public and private funding to go around, so it’s important to get the balance right”.

The amount of support that Rox can generate for 2015 will have a

direct impact on the festival itself and the Rox crew would obviously like the festival to be a bit special!

Needless to say, this rather unique organisation have been planning this event for some time and a number of ideas have been put forward for consideration and further information will be released

in the new year. But better still: this is a golden opportunity for you to get involved and be a part of the historical event...an event that will be attended by thousands and that will bring people to Bognor Regis from all over the country. Food & Drink Follow us on Twitter@chiherald

A GLOBAL POLICE crackdown

on counterfeit produce has netted

thousands of tonnes of fake food

and drink, including imitation

caviar, Interpol said Monday.

Operation Opson 4 was run by

Interpol and its EU sister agency

Europol in 47 countries during

December and January, 20 of

them within the European Union.

Some 2,500 tonnes of fake

and substandard food and more

than 275,000 litres of fake or

diluted alcohol -- enough to fill

more than 1,000 bathtubs -- were

confiscated.

The haul included 20,000 litres

of fake whisky in Thailand, false

malt in Uganda and fake beer in

Rwanda. In Britain, police shut

down an imitation vodka factory,

where nearly 20,000 empty

bottles were ready to be filled,

Lyon-based Interpol said.

French customs uncovered

dubious Chinese caviar in boxes

marked “Aquitaine caviar” after

one of France’s most famous

seafood-producing regions, as

well as 17 tonnes of krill meat

hidden in containers in the

Channel port of Le Havre.

In Italy, the carabinieri busted

a mozzarella trafficking ring in

the southern Salerno region that

made the famous cheese from

sour milk produced in Eastern

Europe.

In Tuscany, police discovered

defrosted rotten fish and shellfish

sprayed with a mix of citric acid,

phosphate and hydrogen to mask

its decay.

The two-month-long swoop

targeted shops, markets, airports,

harbours and industrial zones

and involved police and customs

officers as well as public and

private consumer watchdogs.

The cross-border syndicates

preyed mainly on alcoholic

beverages, seafood and meat,

Interpol said.

“Fake and substandard

food and diluted, poor quality

beverages are a real health and

safety threat,” said Mike Ellis, who

heads the Interpol unit that tracks

the trafficking of illicit goods.

“People take significant risks

and sometimes die because of

criminals’ greed,” he said.

Colonel Bruno Manin, head of

the French police’s unit involved

in Opson 4, said it was best to

avoid luxury products offered at

bargain-basement prices.

“When a high-end product

is offered at three to four times

cheaper than in the shop it’s better

to resist the lure,” Manin warned.

Trafficking in fake food and

drink appeals to criminals as it

produces hefty profits and poses a

low risk, especially when the deal

is done online.

“The Internet is definitely

a strong accelerator for these

crimes,” as it makes it difficult

to track fraudsters perpetrating

these crimes, Manin said.

Your teenager is growing rapidly, their hormones are all over the place and you have no idea if a monster or your loving child is going to walk down the stairs to greet you in the morning. It’s like emotional Russian roulette every day.

Then, just when you think it couldn’t get more unpredictable, unstable and dramatic, they start getting skin/spot break outs! The skin gets inflamed, red and irritated and this problem adds more emotional trauma into the mix and adds to life’s problems more than you ever thought possible. Not to mention a knock to the already wavering confidence. This is a problem that needs to be dealt with head on, and fast action is

paramount!Yes, it’s tempting to spend a

truckload of money on expensive skin care products, and yes hygiene is of course, essential. However, it is quite easy to control skin breakouts with adding much more goodness into their diets by following a few simple rules, but knowing that beauty starts from within, literally.

Firstly start by shopping the rainbow way. Actually, for anyone wanting to improve their skin tone, condition and health glow, the best place to find anti-aging skincare isn’t necessarily the beauty counter; it’s the green grocers (or the super market!). It’s a really simple fact that a diet rich in antioxidants neutralizes free radicals, which speed up visible signs of aging, like wrinkles, and helps to clean the body and mop up damaging waste products, leaving a more beautiful, spot free zone. But you have got to make the effort and load up on colourful fruits and vegetables. In my experience juicing or using a Nutri-bullet is the best way to get an array of these vegetables into your teenagers. But whatever works for you, you can guarantee that they might be a little more interested in

these foods if they think they are going to get a beautiful, Hollywood star complexion at the end of it.

My favorite skin concoction in the juicer is:

1 pink grapefruit, and one lemon (peeled). Two sticks of celery, a handful of kale and a handful of blueberries. This will work a treat over a period of a few weeks when taken every day.

Then, encourage your teenagers to include as many of the following in their diet for that anti-oxidant kick:

1. Red: Tomatoes, strawberries, watermelon, red peppers, pink grapefruit.

2. Orange: Carrots, acorn squash, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, papaya.

3. Yellow: Yellow squash, yellow peppers, pineapple, and lemon.

4. Green: Spinach, kale, avocado, kiwi, asparagus.

5. Blue/purple: Blueberries, blackberries, grapes, purple cabbage.

This mix of goodies will not only be magical for their skin, but will massively help with mood swings and emotional stability. So it’s got to be worth the effort!

Enjoy!

FROM watching your waistline to spending more time in the sack, here are some simple ways to keep your ticker ticking. While you’re stressing over your next meeting or running around after the kids, do you ever stop to think about the impact is has on your heart?Statistics show that one in five men and one in eight women die from heart diseases - so

maybe it’s about time you did.Heart Disease is responsible for a shocking 82,000 deaths in the UK each year, an average of 224 people each day.And around 62,000 men and 39,000 women in England suffer a heart attack each year. In fact, women are three times more likely to die from heart disease than from breast cancer. Despite the overwhelming

evidence that we should get clued up about our hearts, people still don’t seem to know the vital facts about heart-health.So in collaboration with National Heart Month, Boots UK Pharmacist Angela Chalmers has come up with ten top tips to help keep your heart healthy.1. Healthy sex life = healthy heartYes it is true! A good sex life is also good for your heart as it helps to keep your oestrogen and testosterone levels in balance. It is also a great form of exercise - a vigorous sex session can double a person’s heart rate and burn up about 200 calories, or the equivalent of a brisk 15-minute run. 2. Watch your waistlineYour shape matters as well as your weight and BMI when it comes to your risk of heart disease. Many women may find they are apple shaped and have excess weight around the waist and tummy area. Being apple shaped puts you at higher risk of heart disease and

also type 2 diabetes, compared to those that are pear shaped, where excess weight is concentrated on the hips and thighs. Aim for a waistline of less than 80cm (31.5 inches).3. Your eyes are a window to your heartA regular eye health check can help detect serious health conditions like high blood pressure or high cholesterol, which can both lead to heart disease. These conditions can be detected early by examining the tissue and blood vessels at the back of the eyes, through a digital retinal photograph, which provides a unique picture of the back of the eye. This can help your optometrist to identify changes in the retina, for example, changes in the shape of blood vessels, which could indicate high blood pressure, so they can refer you onto your GP if necessary. 4. Get plenty of sleep Research shows that people who do not get enough sleep have a higher risk of heart disease or stroke, so try to ensure you get at least seven

hours of a sleep a night. People who sleep less than this tend to have higher blood pressure and higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol -increasing the risk of poor heart health. To aid a good night’s sleep, try not to have caffeine in the afternoon, keep your room dark and avoid electronic devices before bed as they can emit blue light, which is known to disrupt sleep.5. A piece of chocolate a day could save your heartGood news for chocolate lovers! Eating a small piece of dark chocolate a day can help reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. This is because dark chocolate with a cocoa solid content of at least 60 per cent is rich in flavonoids, which are known to protect the heart. The darker the chocolate, the higher its flavonoid content. However, whilst chocolate is beneficial for health, these benefits do not give you an excuse to eat as much as you want. Chocolate is still a high-calorie, high-fat food so go easy on the treats.

The future of F1? Ferrari unveil striking images of aggressive-looking concept carFERRARI have revealed images of a radical Formula 1 concept car, amid the ongoing debate over how the sport’s challengers should look in future.Under the name of Ferrari F1 concept, the rendered pictures show a design which appears to be a cross between a modern-day F1 car and a sportscar. The concept features aggressive-looking bodywork, a twin deck front wing and lower-profile tyres, akin to those run briefly by Pirelli as an experiment at a test last year. The pictures have been released at a time when the sport’s powerbrokers are debating what changes to make to F1 cars to make them more spectacular and appealing for fans, with the aim of introducing a raft of changes for either 2016 or 2017.Proposals on the table include a return to 1,000bhp engines and bigger tyres, while debate continues over the sport’s soundtrack following the advent of quieter hybrid power units last year.Explaining the thinking behind the design, Ferrari said in a statement on their website: “Would it be

possible to come up with an F1 car which not only is technologically advanced, but also captivating to the eye and aggressive-looking? And could this be made without having to overturn the current technical rules?“At Ferrari, we believe so. Let us introduce you to the ‘concept design’ that was conceived by our design studio (Centro Stile Ferrari) together with the Scuderia’s aero department. Minimal changes give the car a look that is way different from what have been familiar with so far. Our challenge was to create something that was – to put it short – better looking.”Speaking last month, new Ferrari team boss Maurizio Arrivabene called on F1 to dramatically improve both the look and sound of its product.“By 2017, I would like to see cars that win over the fans, with cars that they can get closer to and that are aesthetically more appealing, maybe even producing a noise that gets your hair standing on end, like that produced by a heavy metal band,” he said.

“I don’t think a simple evolution is enough in this case. Instead, a real revolution is called for with significant and radical changes.”Although it is not yet known whether changes to improve F1’s appeal will be introduced next year

or the year after, McLaren chief Ron Dennis recently suggested that “dramatic” change shouldn’t be rushed.“If we’re going to change Formula 1, we should change it dramatically and therefore we should change

it dramatically for 2017. Then it will be affordable,” the McLaren chairman said.“If we dramatically try and change Formula 1 for 2016, the cost implications will be huge.”

City face Brighton in finalSunday 15 February 2015 Sussex County Cup Semi-final Chichester City ladies 4 – 0 Seahaven Harriers

ON SUNDAY Chichester City Ladies booked their place in the Sussex Cup Final for the second consecutive season after defeating Seahaven Harriers at a packed Oaklands Park. As defending Champions Chichester were keen to start the game fast against a team ranked below them in the football pyramid but the heavy pitch and a fine defensive performance from Seahaven proved a tougher challenge than was predicted.Chichester entered the pitch in front of over 100 fans sporting in their green and white strip that has once again been sponsored by The Owen Kenny Partnership. The local firm who specialise in conveyancing and family law made the decision to support local community projects rather than investing in a large marketing campaign. They have now entered their third season of sponsoring the team and the ladies proudly wear both home and away shirts with their logo. Seahaven started brightly through

a fine passing move that penetrated deep into the Chichester half which led to an early corner for the visitors. Chichester defended well and cleared their lines consequently this proved to be Seahaven’s best chance in the first half. Chichester then asserted themselves on the match and a plethora of chance ensued. Woman of the match, Lucie Challen, came closest with a fine diving header followed be some close range efforts which the Seahaven keeper denied. After having a goal disallowed for offside it seemed the break-through would never come. Then on the 44th minute debutant Rachel Waller unleashed a fine effort from outside the box into the top right corner. The second half became a more open affair which suited Chichester as they started to exploit the space. Captain Alexandre dominated the back line with Cheshire and Dowdell were proving too much for Seahaven to cope with on the right flank. A swift passing move soon led to yet another cross reaching the box, the Chichester College duo Jess Pike and Chloe Dowdell linked well as Pike looped a ball to the back post for Dowdell to

head home. After many threats from Baron corners Cheshire soon converted an effort to take the goal tally to three, the full back then got her brace after slotting a penalty home. The ever present

centre midfielder Challen tested the Seahaven keeper several times from range in the latter stages of the game and only the wood work could prevent her from scoring a well-deserved goal. Just before the final whistle Seahaven had their

best chance with a sliding effort on the back post, but a goal evaded the lunging player. Chichester ran out 4-0 winners and will now face Brighton Ladies in a replay of last season’s final.
