L E A R N I N G : The act, process, or experience of gaining knowl-edge or skill. The cognitive skills listed below are the underlying brain skills that make learning possible. They are respon-sible for collecting, processing, storing and retrieving information. Because of the brain’s neuroplasticity— the ability to reorganize neural connections and even create new ones— cognitive skills are never set in stone. They can be developed and strengthened, improving the way the brain thinks, learns, reads, focuses and re-members.

ATTENTION SKILLS: The ability to attend to incoming informa-tion. There are three primary types of at-tention:

Sustained Attention:The ability to remain

focused and on task, and the amount of time we can focus. Selective Attention: The ability to remain focused and on task while being subjected to related and unrelated sensory input (distractions). Divided Attention: The ability to remember information while performing a mental operation and attending to two things at once (multi-tasking).

MEMORY: The ability to store and recall information: Long-Term Memory: The abil-ity to recall information that was stored in the past. Long-term memory is critical for spelling, recalling facts on tests, and com-prehension. Weak long-term memory skills create symptoms like forgetting names and phone numbers, and doing poorly on unit tests. Short-Term / Working Memory: The ability to apprehend and hold infor-mation in immedi-ate awareness while simultaneously per-forming a mental operation. Students with short-term memory problems may need to look several times at something before copying, have prob-lems following multi-step instructions, or need to have information repeated often.

LOGIC & REASONING: The ability to reason, form concepts, and solve prob-lems using unfamiliar information or novel procedures. Deductive reasoning extends this problem-solving ability to draw con-clusions and come up with solutions by analyzing the relationships between given conditions. Students with underdevel-oped logic and reasoning skills will gen-erally struggle with word math problems and other abstract learning challenges. Symptoms of skill weaknesses in this area show up as questions like, “I don’t get this”, “I need help... This is so hard”, or “What should I do first?”

AUDITORY PROCESSING: The abil-ity to analyze, blend, and segment sounds.

Auditory processing is a crucial underlying skill for reading and spelling success, and is the number one skill needed for learning to read. Weakness in any of the auditory pro-cessing skills will greatly hinder learning to read, reading fluency and comprehension. Students with auditory processing weak-ness also typically lose motivation to read.

VISUAL PROCESSING: The ability to perceive, analyze, and think in visual im-ages. This includes visualization, which is the ability to create a picture in your mind

of words or concepts. Students who have problems with visual processing may have difficulty following instructions, read-ing maps, doing word math problems, and comprehending.

PROCESSING SPEED: The ability to perform simple or complex cognitive tasks quickly. This skill also measures the ability of the brain to work quickly and accurately while ignoring distraction stimuli. Slow processing speed makes every task more difficult. Very often, slow processing is one root of ADHD-type behaviors. Symptoms of weaknesses here include homework tak-ing a long time, always being the last one to get his or her shoes on or being slow at completing even simple tasks.

EXECUTIVE FUNCTION: The cogni-tive process that regulates an individual’s ability to organize thought and activities, prioritize tasks, manage time efficiently, and make decisions. Impairment of executive function is seen in a range of disorders, in-cluding some pervasive developmental dis-orders and nonverbal learning disabilities.

Advertising Information [email protected] • 713-575-5652 • www fortbendkids.com

Fort Bend Kids, is a bi-monthly resource guide published by Fort Bend Publications, a local busi-ness whose focus is kids and what their parents are looking for. Our goal is to establish long and lasting relationships with both our readers and our sponsors throughout the Fort Bend County and Southwest Houston area.

Our philosophy is simple— Fast answers for busy parents and quality advertising for clients. e result is a cost-eective, highly-targeted option for local businesses.

We live and do business in the 4th largest metropolitan area in our country and although it would be wonderful for all of Houston to know who you are, in reality— the “bread and butter” of your business is right here in your own backyard. Fort Bend Kids Magazine focuses on the “sweet spot” of your demographics— families and children in the greater Fort Bend area.

10,000 copies of Fort Bend Kids are distributed to over 450 locations. Growth and exposure of your business is our priority at Fort Bend Publications, and we maintain an open door policy. We will contact you routinely about the success of your ad and likewise we love to hear from you!
