is the number of uninterruptedweeks each claimant has duringhis/her current spell ofunemployment.

This report sketches the characteristics of the insuredunemployed -- those covered by the Unemployment Insurance Law.Although this report can be used as a general indicator of theeconomic situation, some caution should be exercised as the datarepresent only a portion of the total "unemployed." Approximately90 percent of Hawaii's workers are covered under the law.Exceptions are the self-employed, family employees, certainemployees of nonprofit organizations, some domestic workers, newspaper carriers under l8, student nurses and interns, casuallaborers, regularly enrolled students performing services for theschool, college or university, ordained members of the church, insurance agents and real estate salespersons remunerated solelyby commissions and agricultural workers on small farms. Newgraduates, re-entrants to the work force, newly arrived immigrants, persons who quit their jobs or have refused suitable work or werefired for misconduct are some examples of job seekers whosenumbers are absent from this report.

represents the weekly number ofcovered workers, totally or partiallyunemployed, who have filedunemployment insurance claims.

The data shows characteristics of claims for benefit paymentsmade for the week containing the 12th of each month. It includesjobless persons filing claims for unemployment insurance under theHawaii Employment Security Law and persons filing claims in theState of Hawaii against another state. The data excludes thoseclaimants filing under the Extended Benefit program, and federalprograms covering ex-federal workers and ex-military personnel.

Beginning with the 2001-2002 Characteristics of the InsuredUnemployed publication, there is a new format for the Industry andOccupation categories. The Standard Occupational Classification(SOC) system replaced the Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT)coding system for occupations. The North American IndustryClassification System (NAICS) is being used to designate thedifferent industries instead of the Standard Industrial Classification(SIC) system. For trend analysis purposes, the data may not becomparable.
