“THE HOT SEAT”
FROM THE DESK OF THE CHAPTER DIRECTOR
.
Hello Chapter “T” Family 105715
We had a good turnout once again from our chapter members for our
last gathering. We had 25 members in attendance. This was our first
gathering at our new location. I think everything went fairly good with
the exception of a few minor hiccups which will be addressed before
the next gathering. Rick Riek was the last person to purchase 50/50
tickets for the night and guess who won, Rick. Nobody was present to
win the Progressive so it will continue to build for the next gathering.
The Wings for Warriors ride will be held on June 3rd this year. The ride
will benefit the L.E.E.K. Foundation as it did last year when we raise
more than $6,000. Once again Roger Snuffer, Gary Paugh and Gary
Yoder will be in charge of this event. If you are to help in any way
please let them know.
Our chapter is looking into going to more parades this year. We al-
ready have gotten invited to the Southmont Vol. Fire Co. Jubilee on
June 1st in Johnstown at 7pm. There will be numerous parades through-
out the area this summer that we are looking to attend.
Hope to see you at the next gathering on April 14th. Get out and Ride!

Hi Everyone,
I’m kind of out of newsletter material, too much going on here. I am
hoping the winter weather is over and we can start looking forward
to spring. I guess our next event will be the Pa District Rally in May.
We are looking forward to going and seeing our friends and new
friends.
We have decided to sell our 2010 Breckenridge Camper located at
Mt. Pines Resort in Champion, Pa. We have been camping there for
10 years and will miss it a lot. But we are hoping to camp with our toy
hauler trailer. So if you know anyone interested please have them call
us. I have attached a few photos.
Happy Easter

Motorcycle Trips - How Do You Prepare?
By Walter F. Kern
Before you go on a motorcycle trip, you need to determine if you have the right motorcycle, the right apparel, and the right physical conditioning to have a successful motorcycle trip. In addition, the bike must be in good mechanical condition. Further, you must determine what needs to be packed on the bike to make an enjoyable adventure. The kitchen sink is not required but often it seems to be the only thing left off. We discuss all aspects of getting ready to have a great motorcy-cle trip.
What's Your Motivation for Going?
A motorcycle trip is more than just a ride to the store for milk. A motorcycle trip is much longer. It might be 50 miles or 3000 miles or longer. It's a chance to go touring and see what's over the next hill.
You might be motivated by a chance remark by a friend to join them on a trip out West. You might read about a rally 300 miles away and want to go do some test rides.
You could be motivated to ride somewhere beyond your limits. Your experience may be lacking or your bike's too small. You shouldn't go. Only the strong survive.
You might be wanting to test yourself. That's not all bad, if you're prepared.
What Motivates You to Take a Long Trip on Your Bike?
Jane and Walt Ride West on Motorcycles
Motorcycle Rallies
Prepare the Motorcycle
Touring can be done on any motorcycle but these days, most touring riders want a big bike. When I thought about riding out West with friends, I was riding a Nighthawk 750 and my wife was on a Shadow 600. We quickly decided we needed new bikes to tour on. We bought twin Honda PC-800s. You have to decide what bike is best for your trip.
Once you know what bike, you need to make it mechanically perfect. Either do-it-yourself or let your local mechanic go over it. Change the fluids, buy new tires and battery, and get a good set of tools.
Of course, some riders are adventurers. They just ride and pray a lot.

How To Enhance Motorcycle Safety Before You Ride
Prepare Yourself
To take a long trip you should wear good quality protective apparel and a helmet. A trip can be dangerous. You don't know what will happen. Be prepared.
Riding 500 mile days takes a toll on the body. Join a health club and work out. I worked out for six months be-fore I went on my 6000 mile trip.
Plan your route. Get a GPS if possible. Pick a few places to stay and make reservations. That will give you a goal to get there and keep you on schedule.
If you're going with friends, agree that you may disagree on the trip. Also, expect that your plans will change en route.
Plan to stay in touch with home. People worry.

Packing for the Trip
Some people are minimalists. They take a credit card, a change of clothing, and a bedroll. Others need to pull a trailer to haul their stuff. Most of us fall somewhere in between.
No matter what your requirements are, you need a packing list to keep track of what you need to bring and where it will be stored on the bike. Not to fear, I've devised a motorcycle packing list. I've used it on every trip I've ever gone. See the link below.
You must also learn how to efficiently roll apparel into small shapes. Put items in sealed plastic bags if you ex-pect rain. It always rains. Believe me, take a rain suit.

A Packing List for your Bike
Consider Safety
We read about motorcycle accidents every day, some fatal. I spend a lot of time trying to tell riders to be safe while they ride. The fact is that most don't listen and think they are invincible, especially young riders. Do me a favor. Read my "10 Ways to Be Safe on a Motorcycle" just before your trip. Some of my readers hang them up in their garages right over their bikes.
Remember that you are invisible out there and ride accordingly. Wear a helmet and protective gear. Slow down at intersections and watch out for oncoming drivers trying to turn left in front of you.
Be Safe, please.

Consider What You Will Encounter on the Road
If you're used to riding to work over a well-known route, don't think that taking a long ride to a strange place over strange roads is going to be the same.
Our road system is a mine field of obstacles for motorcycles. You may encounter gravel in a blind turn, a hay
wagon just as you crest a hill at 70 mph, or find yourself dodging mattresses that have just flown off a pickup truck ahead of you. Be alert and maintain space all around you to give you time to react.
Are you riding into the Plains states? Ever encountered a crosswind that leaned your bike over for 100 miles? You will.
Be prepared for anything.

Expect an Adventure
Taking a long trip on a motorcycle can be exhilarating. It will always be an adventure. It'll have its ups and downs but the worst day on a bike is better than the best day in a car, always.
When I toured 3000 miles in 2006, I wrote three blogs of my experiences. Some were embarrassing. Some involved injuries. I rode through lots of rain and got lost even with a GPS. I suffered from arthritis but made it through. My wife was in pain with a badly damaged knee (just successfully replaced). We rode with three separate groups of friends to three rallies. We had a blast.
Expect an adventure on your trip. You'll get it!

CHAPTER COUPLE
2017 & 2018
Hello everybody, sure hope the snow is gone and Spring gets here.
Debbie and I went to the Couple of the Year retreat in Duncansville Pa.
On March 11-&12th. Barry & Rhonda Blyler, Pa. Couple of the year co-
ordinators really did a nice job putting this together. Saturday we all
went to dinner paired in to groups of 4,and had to find out as much in-
formation about each other as we could. We than stood in front of the
group and told everybody what we learned about the other couple.
Played some games, and then made our own ICE CREAM SUNDIES !
Sunday Dianne Heffelfinger spoke on how great an honor it is to be
Couple of the Year. And how it will make us all better people. John and
Glenda showed us how to act, dress and just be ourselves and to have
fun. Rich and Wendy Wirt ( District Trainers ) told us that we need to
Start saying “ GoldWing Roadriders “ rather than just GWRRA.

line up. Hope everyone is doing the same
Rick & Andi Riek
Hello everyone,
Hopefully the season for spreading salt and cinders is finally over. We can
only hope it is. March sure came in like a lion and hopefully will exit like the
proverbial lamb. At least the days are getting longer and the sun does last
longer in the day since we set the clocks ahead. The sun does feel like it has
some warmth to it also. I guess we get spoiled when the winter months feel
like spring and winter comes in March with cold and snow.
Now is the time to start going over your motorcycle and make sure every-
thing is in good shape and all maintenance is completed. You sure don’t want
to have some nice weather show up and your ride is not ready.
All the officer change and yearend financial paperwork forms are complete
and sent on to region directors so they can send them to the home office if
necessary. We again thank all the chapter directors and chapter treasurers in
getting this complete. Beside completing your financial paperwork do you
know what else is a very important part of the paperwork? You probably are
wondering what could that be. Well the region is working with the IRS on an
issue with the 990N. The IRS wants a copy of the latest newsletter listing all
the officers, location of the chapter and when and where they gather and
whether they have a rider education article. It is very important for GWRRA
to be able show the IRS that chapters have a newsletter to keep their non-
profit status. That is why we encourage all our chapters to have a newsletter,
no matter how big or small.
I am sure by now that most chapters have been working on and completing
their 2017 riding schedules. Why not go ahead and get them posted on the
district website so everyone can enjoy some of your events.
Don’t forget to make plans for Wing Ding, the PA District Rally and especially
All Chapters East and All Chapters West. If you have n ever attended any of
our All Chapters you don’t know what you are missing.
We have been getting the region fundraiser tickets back and thanks to you
for doing a great job in selling them. Now, we are waiting for the return of
tickets from a few of our chapters. Please get the tickets, sold or unsold, re-
turned to us as soon as you can.

Andi and I returned home Sunday afternoon from the district Couple of
the Year Retreat. On the trip home, we discussed how successful the re-
treat had been and how well organized it was. I don’t want to bore you
with all the details but I must mention a few highlights of the weekend.
Our district MEC, Diane Heffelfinger, and our District Couple of the Year
Coordinators, Barry and Rhonda Blyler, did an excellent, excellent job
putting this event together. We started out Saturday evening with get to
know each other games. After that we made a trip to dinner at Prime Rib
Buffet across the road to chat with the couples that were paired up before
we left so we could get to know each other. After dinner, we came back to
the hotel to discuss what we found out about our couples likes and dis-
likes. What a great idea. After the discussion, we played some more
games and enjoyed an ice cream sundae bar. Sunday morning, we start-
ed out with another get to know each other discussion, then Diane went
over the Couple of the Year handbook and resume. This was very helpful
for the Couples in attendance to understand the process going forward
to the Couple Selection coming at the PA District Rally in the spring. Next
up was a seminar put on by our District Assistant Trainers, Tim and Crys-
tal Brakebill. This presentation was another informative program. Any-
body that came away from this retreat without learning something must
have been asleep the whole time.
We appreciate the Couples in attendance along with their Chapter Direc-
tors. Hopefully next year we can have all 20 of our chapter Couples of the
Year there along with their Chapter Directors. I bet a dollar to a donut the
Couples in attendance this year will be going back to their chapters and
telling them what a great time they had. The Couple of the Year program
truly holds a special place in our district team’s heart. This year the
whole groups’ attitude seemed so upbeat and everyone seemed so com-
fortable with everything that was going on. Again, we thank everyone in-
volved with putting this retreat together. They did a marvelous job. As I
always say, the Pennsylvania membership has the greatest and most en-
ergetic district team around.
Next up is the District meeting coming at the end of April. Hopefully eve-
ry chapter will have their team members in attendance. This year Andi
and I will be turning over the meeting to our Assistants. We have a family
commitment that we are unable to miss. The team has graciously accept-
ed to run the meeting and Andi and I have confidence in them going
above and beyond to do the district membership proud.
Next up is the District meeting coming at the end of April. Hopefully every
chapter will have their team members in attendance. This year Andi and I

mitment that we are unable to miss. The team has graciously accepted to

The 2017 PA rally in State College is coming fast. Don’t forget to get your
District Rally reservations in. In case you are running late getting your reg-
istration in we have extended the deadline for registering. Remember you
don’t want to miss this one. This year we have some exciting events going
on. Along with vendors being there from Thursday to Saturday afternoon.
We are excited to again have Cliff and Kelly back on Thursday evening. We
are not sure what the will be presenting but whatever it is, we know it will
be fun. Also, going on will be the talent show and ice cream social on Fri-
day, chapter participation games on Saturday morning, hosted by Chapter
I, along with the atrium will be all ours for the weekend and open for mem-
bers to just sit around and relax, play cards or board games all week. There
will also be guided and unguided rides available. Hopefully Mother Nature
cooperates this year. And of course, our hospitality room will be open
again for your enjoyment to just sit around and enjoy our goodies and com-
radery. We are again this year asking our members to bring some pack-
aged goodies to the hospitality room for everyone to enjoy. The District
team is excited and anxious to see everyone there. Come and have some
fun. Just remember it will be as much fun as you want to make it.
Well I guess I have bored you enough. Hope all our members have a great
riding season. I am looking forward to this upcoming season and seeing all
of you on the road somewhere.
