THEODORE 2 MCGEE (JOHN 1 ) was born July 30, 1836 in Oxford, Butler County, Ohio, and died July 31, 1905 in Livermore, Humboldt County, Iowa. He married SARAH LUVENA WRIGHT December 29, 1864 in Greensburg, Decatur County, Indiana, daughter of RICHARD WRIGHT and LUVENA STARK. She was born July 16, 1846 in Decatur County, Indiana, and died December 17, 1928 in Humboldt County, Iowa. Notes for THEODORE MCGEE: Theodore McGee was born on July 30, 1836, in Oxford, Butler County, Ohio, the youngest child of John McGee and Jane Cassel. He departed his home in Clinton County, Indiana around 1860, and by some process arrived in Clinton County, Illinois where he enlisted in Company E of the 20 th Regiment of the Illinois Infantry Volunteers on April 27, 1861. He served in the 20th Regiment throughout most of the Civil War, and was mustered out on June 12, 1864 at Chattanooga, Tennessee at the expiration of his three year term. His muster out pay was $100.00 plus $4.86 for a ticket from Cairo, Illinois to Clinton County, Indiana. The 20 th Regiment had a very distinguished record, serving under General Grant at Forts Henry and Donaldson, the Battle of Shiloh (where Theodore was wounded), and the siege and surrender of Vicksburg. After Grant came to the East, the regiment served under General Sherman at Kennesaw Mountain, the siege and burning of Atlanta, Sherman’s march from Atlanta to the sea and the Grand Review in Washington. According to Theodore’s discharge papers, he was born in Oxford, Ohio on July 30 th (no year given), was six feet tall, dark complexion, brown eyes, black hair, and was a farmer when he enrolled. After his release from the Army, Theodore McGee must have traveled to visit his brother, Ralph McGee, who owned a farm near Greensburg, Indiana because on December 29, 1864, he married Sarah L. Wright in Decatur County, Indiana. She was the daughter of Richard Wright and Luvena Stark, neighbors of Ralph McGee, who had moved to Decatur County from Kentucky in 1826. Ralph McGee had been a resident of Decatur County since 1853, and was a successful and respected member of the community. Theodore’s obituary stated that he and Sarah lived in Indiana for one year after their marriage before moving to Illinois for one year, and then finally, in the spring of 1868, they moved by covered wagon to Livermore, Humboldt County, Iowa. It was here that they lived out the remainder of their lives raising sixteen children to adulthood. Theodore McGee died of diabetes on July 31, 1905. The 1870 census for Humboldt Township, Humboldt County, Iowa lists Theodore McGee, age 34, a farmer, b. in Ohio; his wife, Jane, age 24, keeping house, b. in Indiana; a daughter, Sarah, age 4, b. in Iowa; a daughter, Carrie, age 3 (?), b. in Iowa; a daughter, Anna, age 2, b. in Iowa; and a son, Richard, age 5 months, b. in Iowa. She leaves to mourn her loss the following sons and daughters: J. F. McGee; Carrie M.; Jeanette; Elizabeth; Cora E.; T. C. McGee; L. C. McGee; Lucinda; Elma; Aurilla; Frank McGee; Ben H. McGee. In addition to the above, she also leaves twenty four grandchildren and ten great grandchildren, also three brothers, two of whom live in Indiana and one in California. She came to reside in Humboldt County with her husband in 1868 and has resided in this vicinity for 60 years. She belongs to that hardy race of pioneers who have been such heroic factors in the building up of all that is best in a nation’s life. Enduring the hardships of the days of those early settlers, bravely and successfully contending against all the inconveniences of those prairie schooner and stage coach days, she raised her family and aided by precept and example in building up a Christian civilization. Through the days of Abraham Lincoln and the dark days of the Civil War she lived and toiled. She became a bride in the year of Lincoln’s death. She has lived to see the gradual growth of the nation until we have reached the highest place among all nations of the earth. For many years she has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. She was a lover of all that is beautiful and good. Loving in her life, affectionate in her family circle, patient in her suffering she has now passed from earth and understands more clearly than we do, the glory of the many mansions as promised by her Christ and ours. The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Joseph J. Share, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Humboldt. The service was held in the church at three in the afternoon, Wednesday, December 19, 1928. Burial took place in the cemetery at Livermore, Iowa.
