The Counteract bag in bag application makes it easy to install, simply throw the inner bag into the tire when the tire is broken down. The product can also be easily injected into the tire through the valve stem. 38 AUTOSOCK® – AVAILABLE FOR CARS AND TRUCKSHow does AutoSock® work?Basically, it is all about friction. Dry snow and ice sticks to fabric, especially ‘woolly’ fabric, just like making snowballs with wool gloves. AutoSock is made from a hairy fabric which sticks to the snow. The fibers, which become hairier with use, are arranged at right angles to the direction of travel to optimize grip. The spe-cially developed textile also ‘wicks away’ any water that’s found between the ground and the tire (generated e.g. by the warmth of the sun or wheel spin) thereby maximizing the friction/grip.

How well do they work?They are more effective than winter tires (and a lot cheaper) and are also more effective than snow chains in certain situations, especially on ice. They have been tested and formally approved in Europe by Audi, Citroen, Mercedes-Benz, Peugeot, Volkswa-gen, and BMW and in Japan by Toyota, Honda, and Volvo truck of Sweden. They are also approved by several European road transport research institutes and the German TUV. In the US, Colorado DOT was the first state with chain laws to approve the use of AutoSock. What sort of conditions can I use them in?They’ll improve traction on any type of snow or ice, even in soft, deep, or wet snow. You can keep AutoSocks on dry pavement to travel between sections of snow, but once off snow for good, it is recommended to remove them. For CDOT approval, the Auto-

Sock had to run at 20 MPH on dry pavement for 100 miles and still be deemed a useable traction device. AutoSock passed with flying colors, however, dry pavement driving is not recommended as it increases wear.

What’s it like driving with AutoSock?Silent and smooth as you’d expect. There’s none of the loud rattling and bumpy ride associated with snow chains. Because there’s no danger of damage to the vehicle structure, they are approved for speeds up to 30 mph in passenger vehicles and 20 mph in commercial: this is faster than is recommended for snow chains, although your speed should of course be appropriate to the weather and road conditions.

Is there anything else I should know about?Nothing to be concerned about, although certain users may wish to note that you can use them with your vehicle’s electronic aids left on unlike snow chains which should NOT be use with traction control/antiskid like ESP/ASC+T/ASR/ABS.

If my car has limited space between the wheel and the mechanical parts, can I use AutoSock?Yes, AutoSock works even with vehicles which have low clear-ance between the tire and the body in addition to tight space between the tire and the suspension.
