OPERATION L’HITRAOT XVPASSOVER 2006 MISSION TO ISRAEL - APRIL 10-21

For the past 5 years, members ofthe Kehilath Jeshurun community havefollowed the tradition of theirancestors by making a "pilgrimage" toIsrael for Passover.

This year's pilgrimage isscheduled to depart on Monday, April10, 2006 and return on April 21, 2006.As in the past, the group will stay atJerusalem's famed Inbal Hotel, locatedin the heart of Jerusalem, withinwalking distance of the Old City aswell as the New City's bustlingdowntown shopping areas.

In past years, KJ Missions havebeen to some profoundly excitingplaces, including the Begin Museum,Neot Kedumim, Afrikef Monkey Park,the Palmach Museum, Yad V'Shem,Ein Gedi and various army bases.Participants have also had theopportunity to work on various chesedprojects. KJ Missions have also hadthe pleasure of hearing insightful

lectures from some of the country'smovers and shakers. This year'sitinerary is still being planned, but itpromises to be an equally excitingexperience.

Rabbi Lookstein will once againbe leading a gala Seder at the Inbal, ahotel which is known for its top notchcuisine. Also included in the packageare all the Chag and Shabbat meals, aswell as two exciting days of specialtouring.

As anyone who frequents KJ'sservices knows, the Rabbi invites attheir conclusion anyone "who eitherneeds hosting for a meal, or who wouldlike to host, to please see me after thebenediction." This informal communityservice has provided many a guest witha Shabbat or Yom Tov meal, benefittingmembers of the beginners service,visitors to the community, singles, newmembers, our lovely Bnei Akivashelichot, and college aged youth groupleaders from Yeshiva University stayingin the neighborhood. Such a warm andwelcoming atmosphere is indeed a KJhallmark.

This year, under the leadership ofvolunteer Hospitality CoordinatorJoshua Trump, the synagogue isattempting to formalize this communityservice by asking 1-2 families perShabbat/Yom Tov meal to agree inadvance to serve as pre-scheduled"stand-by" meal hosts in the event that

there are people at shul who requesthosting. We are in the process ofcreating a host rotation large enough sothat each participating household maybe asked to host just a few times peryear.

In addition to the need for mealhosts, there is an ongoing need forsleeping accommodations for our manycollege aged youth group leaders, aswell as the occasional emergency visitorfrom out-of-town. While manyhospitality minded members of thecommunity have graciously providedweekly meals and lodging in the past,we are trying to broaden the list of hoststo keep pace with the dramatic increasein college aged Youth Department staff.

Therefore, if you are amenable toserving as a "stand-by" host for one ormore meals this year, and/or you canprovide sleeping accommodations forthe occasional guest, please [email protected] or 212-774-5655.

Chanukah celebrates the miracles ofthe spiritual and military victories of theMaccabees against the Hellenist tyrantsthat imposed anti-religious rule anddesecrated the Holy Temple in 165 BCE.The 25th of Kislev was the day theMaccabees entered the Temple followingthe battle and wanted to restart the HolyService that had ceased under the foreignrule. The Maccabees found only one day’ssupply of oil that they could use torededicate the Menorah. Yet that tiny flasklasted until they were able to create new,pure oil – a delay of eight days.

The victory established Jewishreligious and political sovereignty in Israelduring the second Temple times. Thismiracle of Jewish independence had notbeen seen since the destruction of the FirstTemple and the assassination of the thengovernor, Gedalyah.

Primarily, we celebrate Chanukah withspiritual expressions: (1) lighting candlesin commemoration of the miracle of therededication of the Temple, (2) singingHallel in praise of God’s deliverance fromour enemies, and (3) adding Al Ha-Nisimin our prayers of thanksgiving inrecognition of both aspects of the miracleof Chanukah. We also have physicalpleasures and celebrations by having (4)special foods, (5) gift giving, and even (6)parties.

The CandlesThe prevailing custom is for each

member of the family to light his or herown menorah which will have as manycandles as that night of the holiday plus theshamash. Since the Chanukah candles areto commemorate the Menorah of the

Temple, we apply the same rules to both:the candles and their flames become holyand as such cannot be used for any otherpurpose. With the exception of theShamash, we cannot read by their lights oruse them to light another candle.

Time for LightingCandles must be lit after nightfall

(about 40 minutes after sunset) and last forat least a half-hour. On Friday afternoon,Chanukah candles should be lit beforeShabbat candles, and should be of a typethat will last over an hour (this leads tomany adopting the custom of using olive-oil based lamps). On Saturday night, thecandles are lit after Havdalah.

Candle ArrangementThe candles are set from the right side

of the Menorah as the candle lighter facesit. The Menorah should be placed in anarea where it will not need to be movedafter being lit. Safety is also a majorconcern, so please do not leave the homewith the candles unattended.

Lighting the CandlesThe lights are lit from left to right –

starting with the newest candle first. Webegin by lighting the shamash, then wesay the blessings: (1) ner shel Chanukah,(2) she-asa nisim, and on the first night weadd (3) sheheche’yanu. Once the blessingsare said, we light the first candle and beginsinging the songs “Hanerot Hallalu” –which explains the reasons for theceremony – and “Maoz Tzur” whichdescribes all the salvations wrought byGod for the Jewish People.

Publicizing the MiracleWe light the Menorah so we can

publicize the miracle to as many people as

possible. We start with our own family butwe often place the Menorah in the windowto proclaim our belief to others.

Moreover, we publicize the miracle bysinging the complete Hallel in themorning service and by adding Al Ha-Nisim in our daily Shemona Esrei and inBirkat ha-Mazon.

Material PleasuresIn addition to the spiritual nature of the

holiday, we have added, in later times, thephysical pleasures of special foods (latkes,jelly donuts), gift-giving (never a badidea, especially Jewish books), and parties(that serve as a means for fellowship andfor publicizing the miracle).

Chanukah is a time when we shouldrenew our commitment and devotion toGod. The brave Maccabees who riskedtheir lives for religious freedom shouldserve as a model for us to celebrate thosefreedoms and our joy in service to God.

CHANUKAH BEGINS SUNDAY EVENING, DECEMBER 25

The Gift of Candles Through the courtesy of the

Kehilath Jeshurun Benevolent Fund,Chanukah candles have been sent toevery recipient of the KJ Bulletin.

The proceeds of the Fund are usedfor deserving individuals who might nototherwise come to the attention ofpublic charity.

When news hit New York of theHurricane Katrina catastrophe inNew Orleans, volunteers ofCongregation Kehilath Jeshurun andThe Ramaz School quicklymobilized to provide relief to thevictims of the disaster. On Sunday,September 18, an 18-wheeler truckdelivered thousands of donations oftoiletries, clothes, pillows, linens andtoys, as well as religious items forthe upcoming High Holy Dayservices. The truck made its way toHouston, where the gifts weredistributed to thousands of peoplewho evacuated New Orleans and weredislocated to Texas. Stacy Scheinberg andMitch Krevat spearheaded the relief effortwith many other KJ members. “Weliterally put this together in less than aweek,” Stacy said. “Everyone affected bythe hurricane has been on my mind fordays. I knew I wanted to and needed to dosomething to help. So I went to RabbiLookstein, explained what we wanted todo, and he said to do whatever you can.

You have the support of the synagogue.”“As I began to think about the High

Holy Days, I could not help but think aboutthe Jewish people from the area who had toleave their homes because of HurricaneKatrina,” Krevat added. “And I am suremany left without some of the traditionalJewish items used during and for the HighHoly Days.” Scheinberg and Krevatworked side by side, contacting membersof the congregation, family and friends fordonations of not only religious items forthe High Holy Days but items for anyonein need who had been affected by thehurricane. “From the beginning, wewanted to expand the circle of all people inneed to include Jews and non-Jews,”Krevat said. “Next was how to get the

donated items to Houston.”“I literally made one phone call to a

local company, Moishe's MovingSystems,” Scheinberg said. “And as soonas I said what we were planning to do, theowner of the company told me they woulddonate the truck, the gas and the time ofthe drivers to make the delivery.” Thekindness and generosity of the 1,100families of Kehilath Jeshurun, as well asthat of residents of the Upper East Side,

made the drive “a huge success,”Krevat said. “So many peoplehelped to make this possible,”Krevat said. “And the more wetalked about it, the more peoplewanted to help. Everyone, youngand old, performed a mitzvah, agood deed.”

“The tragedy of this storm hasbrought out so much good inpeople,” Scheinberg said. “This is a

good example of when people worktogether we can all make a difference.”The donated items were sent to awarehouse facility in the Houston area andwere distributed among theparticipating partners in theproject: Chabad, Feed the Children,Second Baptist Church, Star ofHope Shelters and the Robert M.Beren Hebrew Academy ofHouston. Also distributed were$1,000 in debit cards to Wal-Martand Target. “From the beginning,Stacy and I knew that we would notwant to look back and wish we haddone something to help,” Krevatsaid. “And we both now know,that with the help of so many

people, we did all that we could.”Below are some of the

letters our community receivedfrom Katrina victims whobenefited from the effort:

There is a well-known aphorism thatJews like to quote as one year passes intothe next: “Tichleh shana v'kilelotecha;tachel shana u'virchoteha,” whichmeans: “Let the old year with its cursesend and the new year with its blessingsbegin.” To which everyone in this shultoday will surely answer: “Amen!”

We have certainly suffered our shareof tragedies this year: untimely deaths;sudden onset of illness; the sadness feltwatching the deterioration in some ofour elderly; painful family traumas,including - especially - separation anddivorce. All of these so-called “normal”tragedies in our personal lives have beencompounded by the global andcommunal suffering which we haveseen: the Tsunami in Southeast Asia;Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Ritaalong the Gulf Coast; and, for Jews, theuprooting of thousands of Jews fromtheir homes in Gaza and the NorthernWest Bank. Whatever one's politicalview, except for the Leon Wieseltiersamong us, the specter of Jews beingexpelled from their homes was a humantragedy of immense proportions.

How are we to respond to suchpersonal and communal tragedy? Oneresponse, publicly proclaimed by somewell-known rabbis and not so well-known ministers, is to point a finger atthe victims. Katrina, said oneoutstanding rabbinic leader, wasAmerica's punishment for supportingIsrael's withdrawal from Gaza; and itsvictims suffered because they don'tstudy Torah. Others - Jews andChristians - saw the wrath of God beingvented on New Orleans for what manybelieve to be its decadent lifestyle.

The Talmud in Brachot 5a does, infact, urge us to do teshuva whensuffering strikes, but it does not assumethat such teshuva explains God's ways.In all of the Torah there was only onereligious personality who describedhimself - rather pretentiously - as one

who understood God's thinking,- yode'ada'at elyon - and that was Bilaam, therasha. And the Talmud (Berakhot 7a)had an unkind reaction to his arrogance:hashta, da'at b'hemto lo yada; da'atelyon mi havi yada? “Behold! He didn'teven understand his donkey's thinking -so he understood the thinking of theDivine?”

The Rav, of blessed memory,countered this dangerous, delusionalthinking elegantly in a 1965 lettersummarizing a lecture of his. It is foundin the introduction to “Out Of TheWhirlwind.” He wrote:

“The gist of my discourse was thatJudaism did not approach the problem ofevil under the speculative-metaphysicalaspect. For such an inquiry would be afutile undertaking. As long as the humanmind is unable to embrace creation in itsentirety and to gain an insight into thevery essence and purposiveness of beingas such, it would not succeed in itsattempt to resolve the dilemma of evil.The latter is interwoven into the veryfabric of reality and cannot beunderstood outside its total ontologicalconfiguration. Job was in error becausehe tried to grasp the nature of evil.Therefore, Judaism has recommendedthat the metaphysical inquiry bereplaced by the halakhic ethical gesture.Man should not ask: Why evil? Heshould rather raise the question: Whatam I supposed to do if confronted withevil; how should I behave vis-a-vis evil?The latter is a powerful challenge to manand it is the duty of man to meet thischallenge boldly and courageously.Suffering, in the opinion of Judaism,must not be purposeless, wasted. Out ofsuffering must emerge the ethical norm,the call for repentance, for self-elevation. Judaism wants to convert thepassional frustrating experience into anintegrating, cleansing and redeemingfactor.”

The Rav spoke and wrote many

beautiful words. This letter stands at thetop of his most inspiring and instructivemessages.

There are two principles enunciatedhere in the Rav's approach to sufferingand tragedy:

1. No one has a right to explainGod's ways. We do not understandcreation or destruction. God's ways areinscrutable, just as God Himself isunfathomable. Job thought he couldunderstand God's ways - and he wasrebuked for that. The Psalmist knewbetter (59:4): Ki hiney orvu l'nafshi “Forbehold my soul was ambushed - yagurualai azim - powerful forces surroundedme - lo fishi v'lo chatati, Ha-Shem -God; it was not because of my sins or mymistakes.”

2. So if the response is not to ask“why,” what should be the response?The Rav answers: Not “why” but “whatnow?” “What should I do?” “Howshould I respond?”

And the answer is twofold:A. Fight suffering and tragedy with

every weapon we possess. We discussedthis response on Rosh Hashanah 2001,one year after the outbreak of theIntifada and ten days after 9/11. It wasalso following the summer during whichmy sister - aleha ha-shalom - was losingher battle with cancer. Fight evil with allthe weapons available, said the Rav,whether that evil is human evil or illness.As my great-grandfather, the RaMaZ,used to say: “When you get sick youshould say a lot of Tehilim - and find agood doctor!” - that is: use all theweapons available.

B. But the experience of sufferingrequires an additional response besidesfighting. Suffering, says the Rav, mustnot be purposeless; wasted. It must beredeemed by feeling and action. Listento his words (Out of the Whirlwind, pp.202-3): “Grief must not enhance one'sself-regard and self-care and render himcompletely oblivious to the suffering of

others. The grieving person must alsobe disturbed by the pain sustained by hisfellow man. He should share the other'sburden, even though he seemscompletely preoccupied with hisagonizing private burden.”

Now, this is not a natural reaction.Much more natural are the wordsspoken to the Rav by a young widowwho was grieving for her husband andwho attended the funeral of her bestfriend's husband who was killed in anaccident. She said: “Rabbi, I wish Icould feel sorry for her. I know sheloved her husband dearly. But I cannot.She is not better than I am. I sustainedthis dreadful loss and survived. Whycan't she?”

This natural self-absorption must beconfronted and transcended, says theRav. Our suffering should make usmore sensitive to the suffering of others,not less. This sometimes requires aheroic effort but it is one which Judaismrequires of us. And many make thateffort, hard as it may seem.

For example: a young man, whobecame a quadriplegic when hit by awave on the eve of his 21st birthday,established a foundation to help curespinal cord injuries and help supportemotionally those who are struck bythem. Or, a young woman who sufferedfrom breast cancer establishedSharsheret, an organization to givesupport to Jewish women who aregrappling with this disease. In eachcase, suffering led not to self-absorptionbut rather to greater personal and socialsensitivity.

This heroic response to suffering isalso reflected in a remarkable commentof Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, of blessedmemory. My friend, Dr. Ike Hershopf,once brought his aunt - a Holocaustsurvivor - to see Rav Feinstein. Sooverwhelmed was she by this greatTalmid Chacham that she approachedhim and hugged and kissed him. Ike,somewhat mortified by his aunt's ratherunusual demonstration of affection for ascholar-saint, apologized to RavFeinstein, saying: “My aunt is notreligious so she doesn't know.” RavFeinstein responded: “Your aunt hasnumbers on her arm; she is holier thanI.” Rav Feinstein, like the Rav, nostranger to suffering himself, wassensitive to the suffering of thisHolocaust survivor and considered hertragic experience to have beenredemptive.

To sum up our thoughts on a properresponse to tragedy, let me quote ayounger colleague of mine, RabbiChaim Steinmetz of Montreal:“Tragedy,” he said, “should not lead usto point our finger, but rather to open ourhand.”

If we can avoid pointing fingers atGod or mankind, if we can fight thechallenges of tragedy with all availableweapons, and if our suffering sensitizesus to open our hands to help and toempathize with others who suffer, thenwe can pray and hope that the old yearand its curses will indeed have endedand a new year and its blessings willtruly begin.

There is an enormous problemfacing the New York Jewish communitytoday: HUNGER. According to a recentstudy by UJA-Federation of New Yorkand Metropolitan Council on JewishPoverty, nearly one-third of New York'sJewish population is hungry.Approximately 51,000 hungry Jews arechildren. Imagine a nearly sell-out crowdat Yankee Stadium, each seat occupied bya hungry Jewish child here in New York.Last year, KJ's response to this enormousproblem was the launching of the KJFood Pantry.

Now in its second operating season,the Congregation's volunteer-drivenFood Pantry is proving that the worldindeed rests upon Chesed. EveryMonday evening, clients come to thesynagogue doors to receive packagesoverflowing with an assortment ofnutritious premium foods. To experiencethe joy that comes from such elementalhuman contact is to experience thefulfillment of the verse in Ashrei: "Godopens His hand to provide sustenance forall."

Led by Sisterhood Co-PresidentStacy Scheinberg, a dedicated team ofRamaz Upper School students pre-package bags to insure that every clientreceives his or her full complement ofprovisions. Each bag is individualized tothe client's dietary needs and preferences.A cart with baskets of fresh produce andfresh, delicious donated Orwasher'sbread is there for the clients' choosing.To our volunteers, the clients are graciousand grateful, and not a few linger to sharetheir life stories. One client, a childsurvivor of the Holocaust who hid in theforests for years to escape the Nazis,relayed how he came to America andeventually became a concert pianistplaying at the world's greatestperformance halls, producing a yellowedprogram guide from Carnegie Hall withhis picture on it. There are other personalstories, too many in fact to share in print,but the common thread linking them all istheir current need for communitysupport. ALIENS AND US: A SERMON ON PARSHAT BEREISHITThe following sermon was delivered by Rabbi Meir Soloveichik on October 29th, Shabbat Bereishit 2005/5766.

Aliens! Aliens are a constant andconsistent draw at the box office. Fromthe warm and wizened ET: theExtraterrestrial, to the cold and logicalMr. Spock, to the warmongering andworld-destroying villains of War of theWorlds, Americans are intrigued by thenotion of alien life living and lurking inthe cosmos. And though there is nothingsinful per se about a belief in aliens, Ibelieve that the widespread interest inextraterrestrials indicates somethingalarming about the state of Americanbeliefs.

You see, for centuries, the church, aswell as Jewish Aristotelians such asMaimonides, assumed that the sunrevolved around the earth, and that ourplanet was the center of the universe. Itwas a cosmology that dovetailed nicelywith theology: given that humanity wascreated by God Himself, then it was onlyright that humanity occupy center stagein the cosmic drama. But then theCopernican solar-centric model of thesolar system was pressed and adopted.Evidence of evolution having beendiscovered, many came to believe thatmankind not only evolved, but evolvedon its own without any input from someimaginary Creator; that sentient beingssprang out of nowhere, fromserendipitous happenstance, in at leastone small corner of the universe. Tosuch a worldview, the question presentsitself: if human beings can emerge ontothe stage of the universe out of oblivionby sheer luck, in one random sector ofcold and lonely space, why shouldn'tsentient beings evolve in like fashionelsewhere?

However, Fred Hereen, a Christianscience journalist writing in the religionjournal First Things, reports that somescientists eager for alien contact arebeginning to admit that the odds of otherinhabitable planets existing are close tonil, that planets with earthlike conditionsare rare. It appears that one of thefeatures that makes our celestial bodylifeworthy is the specific size andprecise position of the Earth's moon.

Astronomer Jaques Laskar writes: “Weowe our present climate stability to anexceptional event: the presence of themoon.” “Without an extra large moonorbiting at the right distance from us,”Hereen reports, “scientists predict thatEarth would be subject to a runawaygreenhouse effect, as on Venus, or apermanent ice age, as Mars wouldexperience if it had more water.”“Worse,” he concludes, “mostastronomers now think that the presenceof the Earth's Moon is the result of afreak accident, perhaps a one-in-a-million shot, when a smaller planet hitthe forming Earth with a glancing blowthat allowed the mantles of each planetto combine and end up in orbit aroundthe Earth.”

A quite pedestrian clump of rockand mineral, orbiting in precisely theright part of space, at a precise positionbetween the sun and the earth, ensuresconditions key to the existence ofhumanity. “A one-in-a-million shot.”To the skeptical secularist, to theastonished atheist, it's all a cosmiccoincidence. But maybe, just maybe,there is a Divinely ordained destiny forthe sentient beings on this planet.Perhaps there is a God who wanted us toexist; perhaps there is a God who wantedus to survive, to flourish, to prosper.

When God communicated the lawsof Shabbat Hagadol, almost 3,500 yearsago, He turned Moshe toward the moon,and ordained Nisan the first month of theJewish lunar calendar. The Jewishnation, our sages cryptically remarked,is like unto the moon. And perhapsscience sheds new light on this aeons-old riddle, on this tradition. A minisculemoon, so vanishingly small whencompared to other celestial bodies, to theplanets of our solar system, to the sunsand galaxies, is positioned, against theodds, in a manner crucial to the survivalof the human race. Likewise the Jewishpeople, a miniscule nation, exceedinglyseemingly insignificant when comparedto other peoples and nations swirling inthe solar system of societies and

civilizations, that nation is perfectlypositioned, against the odds, to have acritical moral impact on humanity. “Iwill insist,” John Adams once wrote,“that the Hebrews have done more tocivilize men than any othernation…[Even] if I were anatheist…who believe that all is orderedby chance, I should believe that chancehad ordered the Jews to…preserve andpropagate to all mankind the doctrine ofa supreme, intelligent, wise, almightysovereign of the universe, which Ibelieve to be the great essential principleof all morality, and consequently allcivilization.”

Atem monin lo ve-ein umot ha-olammonin lo, says the Midrash Rabbah;Israel will calculate its years by themoon while other nations will select thesun. Not a superficial statementcomparing calendrical devices, butrather, a metaphor. Throughout the ages,the sages are implying, Israel has beenmoonlike in its relation to other nations.We have for centuries revolved aroundother peoples, never free to choose ourown trajectory. In fact, by all logic weshould have been extinct long ago. Andyet, we have not only survived; we havecritically impacted and shaped the natureand destiny of the human race. A one-in-a-million shot. To the skepticalsecularist, to the astonished anti-Semite,it's all a cultural coincidence. Butmaybe, just maybe, there is a Divinelyordained destiny for the Jews on thisplanet. Perhaps there is a God whowanted us to exist; and to exist for asacred purpose.

In an age in which judgmentalism isfrowned upon, and all cultures areplaced on pedestals of equal stature,God's statement on the eve of theExodus appears profoundly politicallyincorrect: Ve-he-yitem li segual mi-kolha-amim, God thunders, you will be forme an elite, a chosen nation. You havebeen selected for an influential role inthe divine drama that, given your smallsize, is stupefying: to communicate themonotheistic message to humanity, and

to amass an intellectual heritage even incenturies when most men and womenwere illiterate, and that continues toblossom today despite our sheernumbers. “Arise fair sun,” Shakespearewrote, “and kill the envious moon, whois already sick and pale with grief thatthou, her maid, art far more fair thanshe.” But the moon that is Israel hasnothing to be envious of; for it proudlyexudes a radiance disproportionate to itssize.

Now I must tell you that not all Jewswear this history with pride, and that thewidespread interest in extraterrestrials isalso instructive in seeking to understandthe sorry state of American Jewry. FredHereen reports that he once askedStephen Hawking why he is so sure thatalien life must exist, and he respondedthat “The human race is soinsignificant…I find it difficult tobelieve the whole universe is a necessaryprecondition for our existence.” Alas, somany American Jews today feel, in likefashion, that they as Jews are notsignificant, that their heritage is toonarrow, too parched, too irrelevant, tooanachronistic, too limited to be the focus

of God's plan here on earth. The lateShlomo Carlebach once commented onvisiting American universities: “Whensomeone comes over to me and tells mehe's a Protestant, I know he's aProtestant. When somebody tells mehe's a Catholic, I know he's a Catholic.When someone tells me that he's just ahuman being - I know he's a Jew.” Asscientists deem humanity unworthy ofdivine attention, and search space for amore spectacular species, so do toomany Jews deem our small nationunworthy of divine chosenness, andproclaim themselves citizens of the solarsystem of civilizations, rejecting theoption of associating with the minormoon that is the nation Israel. AsHawking failed to be amazed at the sheermarvel that is man, many Jews lack thesheer wonder at the odds-defyingachievement that is their heritage.

This Shabbat, we begin the Bibleagain. And this book has all theelements of a fantasy and science-fictionstory: heroes and villains, a chosenpeople with a miraculous destiny, and, inthe endtimes, good's ultimate triumphover evil. Yet the author of this saga had

added one ingredient that Tolkien, Wells,Harry Potter's Joanna Rowling, and evenStephen Spielberg, with all his specialeffects, could never add: this story istrue. Moreover: it is the truth that makesthis story special, a truth that isvindicated by the story's endless sequels.For if Israel was never chosen, if Israelwas not ordained with a divine destinymillennia ago, how are we to explain itsextraordinary impact and intellectualachievement? “To examine the Mishna,Gemara, Cabbala, Zohar, and theTalmud,” Adams wrote to Jefferson inamazement, “would require the life ofMethusalah.” If our children are to grownot only as “human beings,” but as Jewsas well, it is amazement at thisachievement that must be constantlycultivated: of the moon that is the nationIsrael, that began its orbit in Egypt, thatcareened through the universe of history,and that impacted upon humanity in anodds-defying and inexplicable fashion.The continuation of our tale, the moralimpact of our people on eternity,depends upon our own performance.

Our Sages refer to Rosh Hashanah as YomHaDin - the Day of Judgment. We are toldthat on this day the Heavenly Court reviewsthe progress of each and every individualover the past year. The Sages compare us tosheep passing before their shepherd one byone in a single-file line. There is nothing tohide behind and no one else to blame - westand on our personal merits alone, to bejudged not based upon what weaccomplished or transgressed yesterday, orupon tomorrow's triumphs and failures, butrather based upon who we are at the momentof inspection.

We find evidence in support of theimportance of this moment - the NOW - intoday's Torah reading. On Rosh Hashanah,we read in the Torah that God gave Sarah ason, Yitzchak. When Sarah saw Yishmael,Avraham and Hagar's son, “playing” with herYitzchak, she told Avraham that he mustdrive Yishmael from their home. What werethe games that Yishmael was “playing?”According to the Midrash, he wascommitting the cardinal sins of idolatry,adultery, and murder. Yishmael waspretending to play with Yitzchak, but inactuality was attempting to shoot Yitzchakwith arrows in order to become Avraham'ssole son and heir. NotwithstandingYishmael's terrible character, when Hagarand Yishmael were expelled to the desert andran out of water, Yishmael repents. Heregretted what he had done. And an angel ofGod came to Hagar and said, “Fear not, forGod has heard the voice of the child, as he isNOW.” As he is NOW -- not the murdererthat he was. As he is NOW -- not the fatherof descendants who will murder thousands ofJews in centuries to come. Yishmael repentsand God judges him as he is NOW, andspares his life.

The process of repentance and spiritualhousecleaning is called Teshuvah. Imagine awindowpane, which hasn't been washed in ayear. It's dusty; it's dirty. Maybe it'smuddied. Though the sun may be shiningoutside that window, light won't penetrateuntil the glass has been made clear. Each ofus is a windowpane, and though God isshining, we can't see that until we take the

time to clear away what's clouding ourvision. In this sense the power of Teshuvahis the highest form of free will. Yet we don'toften stop and think about how remarkablethe gift of being able to change our priorities,our way of seeing the world, our way ofbeing in this world, really is. I often feel thatthe word “repentance” makes a lot of usuncomfortable because it has a connotationof beating our breasts and groveling, saying“I'm no good. It's all my fault.” But that'snot what Teshuvah is about at all. It isactually the opposite of that. It invites eachof us to say, “Yes, I've done things wrong, aseverybody does. But that's not the essentialme. The real me is capable of returning toGod, of being good and strong and brave.This is the time of the year when I take stockof the good deeds that I am capable of doingand remind myself that I possess innerresources for renewal and growth.”

The Almighty is judging us today whetheror not we realize it or acknowledge it. Formany years I was unaware of the profoundsignificance of Rosh Hashanah and the TenDays of Awe. I was born and raised in theSoviet Union at a time when spiritual healthwas an archaic concept incompatible with theCommunist-style “social progressiveness.”

After the Revolution of 1917, TheBolshevik doctrine, as formulated by Leninand Stalin, denied the existence of a nationalJewish identity. Lenin declared nationalJewish culture “the slogan of the rabbis andthe bourgeois, the slogan of our enemies.”According to Stalin, the Jews were anationality on paper only; Zionism was areactionary bourgeois movement, andYiddish merely a jargon.

Civil War broke out after the BolshevikRevolution and turned Ukraine, where 60percent of Russian Jews lived - including myancestors - into a battlefield. By the time theCivil War ended, about 2,000 pogroms hadleft an estimated 100,000 Jews dead andmore than half a million homeless. Amongthe victims were my great-grandfather andgreat-grandmother: Abram and MalkaKramer. A relative later told my orphanedgrandmother (who was less than one year oldat the time) that her parents were religious

Jews who observed the Sabbath and mitzvotand kept a kosher home.

At the end of the 1920s, Hebrew becamethe only language officially outlawed in theSoviet Union. Jewish religious educationwas impossible. Yiddish secular schools sawtheir numbers steadily decline and by the endof the 1930's they completely disappeared.Jews were officially classified as anationality but the authorities stronglydiscouraged the observance of religiousrituals and practices. As a result, manySoviet Jews of later generations wereunfamiliar with Jewish holidays and withsuch fundamental rites of passage as britmilah and bar mitzvah. When Jews appliedto the Soviet government for exit visas toemigrate, their applications were refused andthey became Refuseniks, under suspicion andsurveillance from the secret police force, theKGB. Soviet Jews faced loss of jobs, arrest,and even torture if they expressed interest inIsrael, studied Hebrew, or tried to live openlyas observant Jews. But as always they couldfind humor even in these dire circumstances:

A Soviet dissident is found studyingJewish materials and is taken by the KGB.His interrogation goes as follows:KGB: Why were you studying Hebrew? Jew: I hope one day to leave here and go to IsraelKGB (yelling): WELL YOU WON'T!! YOU'REGOING TO DIE!! WE'RE GOING TO KILLYOU!!!Jew: Well, then I will need the holy language toconverse with the angelsKGB (beside himself): YOU'RE NOT GOING TOHEAVEN!!! YOU'RE GOING TO HELL!!!Jew (relieved): Oh, very well then, I am alreadyfluent in Russian!

So, it's not surprising that by the age of 24,when I immigrated to the United States, I hadexperienced no Jewish Life Cycle events.But I was born a Jew and Jewish I wouldstay. Being born into a Jewish family hadmade a profound impact; that's how I relatedto life. My Judaism, however rudimentary atthe time, had always given me a sense of

KJ BEGINNERS SCORE HIGH DURING HIGH HOLY DAYSOn the first day of Rosh Hashanah, the KJ Beginners Program held its 15th consecutive High Holy Day service. More than 600 men and

women experienced this most unique service; fully Orthodox and unabridged on the one hand, but distinguished on the other hand byexplanations galore, spontaneous singing and dancing, abundant Q & A opportunities, and the fact that no knowledge of Hebrew is necessary.Led by KJ Member George Rohr, Chazan Ruby Davis, and KJ Outreach Director Rabbi Elie Weinstock, the service is a marvelous testamentto this congregation's commitment to the broader Jewish world. connectedness with my people. Or asMichael Medved put it: “Jewishness …attaches us to our fellow Jews around theworld, guaranteeing membership in a large,contentious, frequently quarreling, alwaysemotional, extended family.”

But to go from emotional to spiritual Ineeded an extra push and it came in 1996when I visited Israel for the first time, prayedat the Western Wall and donned Tefilin.Only then did I fully awake to the enormousrichness of Jewish religious learning. Uponmy return from Israel I promptly added tomy Jewishness (added by subtracting if youwill), and at the tender young age of 29bravely underwent brit milah. Interest inreligious learning gave me an extra sense ofpurpose. Early last year Anna and I werewed in the Holy Land, and at the end of theyear we were blessed with our first-born son,Arthur.

When I look at my life now I feel thatbeing Jewish has been far more than anaccident of birth; it has been the way myfamily stood firm in life's raging storm.Russian anthropologist Mikhail Chlenovdeclared: “Judaism is a tool of resistance.” Itis how we Jews seek to distinguish wisdomand truth from folly and falsehood. No otherpeople's story parallels the survival of ourJewish faith and family. And now in myfamily, as it represents its people, after therepressions, expulsion, pogroms, alienation,and assimilation three generations later itcame down to my wife and me re-kindlingthe lights of Shabbos and re-igniting thelight of Jewish life in our home. From thetragedy of my great-grandparents' murder itwill come full circle when little Arthur - theirgreat-great-grandson - enters Ramaz nurseryschool in a couple of years.

Anna introduced me to Kehilath Jeshuruntwo years ago, and since then nowhere do wefeel more at home and religiously stimulatedto observe and learn, especially in KJ'sEducational Programs. From the firstShabbat dinner at Rabbi Weinstock's hometo the Shabbat Beginners Service and laterthe Intermediate Service to workshops andclasses to the recreational activities, KJembraced us and made us feel part of abroad, diverse Jewish community. KJBeginners welcomes people from all walksof Jewish life and greats them with aremarkable team of leaders who volunteertheir hearts to help us grow: Rabbi ElieWeinstock, George Rohr, Dr. StevenRudolph, Professor Alan Rechtschaffen andShilo Kramer to name just a few. RabbiWeinstock truly has become my familyspiritual doctor, having performed PidyonHaBen - Redemption of the Firstborn - forme, and Brit Milah service and Pidyon

HaBen for our son. I wish for all of youduring these High Holy Days to experiencethe sense of spiritual and emotional renewalthat Anna and I have experienced since webecame members of the congregation a year-and-a-half ago. If there is a renaissance ofModern Orthodoxy in America - here is itscenter and its inspiration!

Last year during High Holy Days GeorgeRohr insisted that every person in this hallmake a resolution to improve his or her levelof religious observance and learning in atleast one aspect of life. Two weeks ago,Rabbi Weinstock challenged the audience topersuade one friend to join a holiday minyanat KJ or at another shul. Why were theytalking about just one resolution or oneinstance of positive influence? On the onehand, one mitzvah is easier to manage andfollow though and we all should walk beforewe run. But often one mitzvah is all oneneeds to be closer to Hashem. For theTalmud says: yesh koneh olamo bisha achat- that sometimes a person can win eternalbliss... with one single action. Our survivalas a people for thousands of years was basedon what we affirmed, believed in, and werecommitted to. By taking advantage of KJ'sEducational Programs and electing to learnand grow spiritually, one mitzvah at a time,you can make a profound impact on your lifeand touch the lives of people around you.

Searching for God in our lives is likelooking out the windows of a tower thatstretches infinitely high into the heavens.The view is different from differentlandings; we see more of God the higher weclimb because what changes, as we work toascend that tower, is us. Engaging withTorah is another way of looking out thosewindows and seeing God. Yes, it takeswork. It takes focus, and life is full ofdistractions and it's easy to get wrapped upin our daily lives, to become cloudy, like thatwindow that hasn't been washed for a longtime. But what matters today is that we lookat where we are going, re-align ourdirections and actions, and not just passivelyenter the New Year, but proactivelytransform it as well.

May your year be full of clear windowsand insights. And may you be blessed withthe willingness to seek Hashem whereveryou go, knowing that what you're lookingfor is right there, waiting to be found. I hopeyou have a new year drenched in learningand growth. I wish you a shana tova oo-meh-too-kah - a good and sweet new year,and may we all be inscribed in the Book ofLife and Blessing.

Babette Kass Himler was amember of this congregation for overfifty years. She came from a familyof Kohanim and she was extremelyproud of her relationship with KJ.

A granddaughter of the lateHarry Fischel, she took pride in herJudaism wherever she lived and sheretained her close relationships withmembers of this community.

We will long remember heras a proud Jew.

ADINA LEVINEAdina died in the prime of life

after a long and difficult struggle withthe disease which should have takenher life much sooner. It was atestimony to her zest for living, heroptimism and her inner strength that

she was able to carry on for so long. A Ramaz alumna and a very

involved parent, Adina brightened upthe life of everyone who was touchedby her. She had the most beautifulsmile, the heartiest laugh and themost giving nature. Above all, shegave incredible love and support toher children Eric and Calley, to herhusband Howard, and to her friends.

An iconoclast by nature, she wasnevertheless very traditional andreligious in spirit. She fought for herchildren to receive the best possibleJewish education they could obtainand she went to the greatest lengths tomake sure they received it.

May the family be comfortedamong all of us who mourn for Zionand Jerusalem, and may the memoryof her love of life inspire themalways.

MaTaN, The Sadie Rennert Women’sInstitute for Torah Studies, has developeda special curriculum for mothers anddaughters to study together in preparationfor the Bat Mitzvah. It is a nine-sessioncourse that focuses on great women inJewish history. The aim is to see howJewish women are part of a chain spanningthe generations and how the Bat Mitzvahexperience can serve as a bridgeconnecting young women to the broaderJewish community. Each session willinvolve text learning, discussion, andactivities with source materials providedin Hebrew as well as English translation.

All sessions will be taught by Rachel(Krug) Kraus, a dynamic young educator

and Jewish professional who was trainedby MaTaN’s Founder and DirectorRabbanit Malka Bina, and Rabbanit OshraKoren, the course’s developer. Theprogram will be offered on nine Sundaymornings from 10:30 am -12 noon at KJ:December 4, 18; January 8, 22; February5, 26; March 12, 26; and April 9. Thecourse is open to girls in 5th grade andtheir mothers, so as to insure that allstudents will complete the course beforetheir Bat Mitzvah. The cost for thisprogram is $150.
