SHIVAH ASSAR B’TAMMUZ, TISHA B’AVAND THE THREE WEEKSJULY 22 - AUGUST 12, 1997

During the summer months, wemourn the destruction of both Templesin Jerusalem which took place on theninth of Av, and the events that led totheir destruction. We fast on theseventeenth day of the month ofTammuz, Shivah Assar B'Tammuzbecause, according to tradition it wason that day that the enemy penetratedthe walls of Jerusalem prior to thedestruction of the Second Temple. TheTalmud, however, writes that thesewere not the only tragedies that befellthe Jewish people on this day. On theseventeenth of Tammuz four moretragedies occurred: the first tabletscontaining the Ten Commandmentswere broken by Moses, the two dailysacrifices were suspended during thetime of the First Temple, the wickedApostumos burned the Torah, and anidol was erected in the Temple.

Additional tragedies also befell theJewish people on Tisha B'Av. On thisday, the meraglim, the spies, returnedto the Jews in the desert with anegative report about the Land ofIsrael. In addition, it was on this daythat the city of Betar was destroyedand tens of thousands of Jews werekilled, and the day the wicked TurnusRufus plowed the site of the Templeand its surroundings. Tradition assertsthat the expulsion of the Jews fromEngland in 1290 and the expulsionfrom Spain in 1492 also took place onTisha B'Av.

Our mourning for the destroyedTemples and for the other calamitieswhich occured on these days extends

beyond the fasts themselves. Theperiod between these last two fasts, traditionally called The Three Weeksincludes several practices ofmourning. During these three weekswe do not get our hair cut, attendweddings or involve ourselves in largejoyous gatherings. During the ninedays which begin on the first of Av,August 4, and continue until middayon the tenth day of Av, August 13, weare additionally forbidden to eat meatand drink wine, except on Shabbat, togo swimming or bathe for pleasure, and to do any laundry or dry cleaningthat is not absolutely necessary. Ingeneral, the Talmud writes that whenthe month of Av begins, our moodshould reflect our mourning for thedestruction of the Temples. On TishaB'Av itself, besides fasting, we areprohibited from washing our bodies, wearing leather shoes, anointingourselves, and having maritalrelations. It is also forbidden to studyTorah on this day with the exceptionof the sections of the prophets and theTalmud that discuss the destruction. We do not wear our tallit and tefillinuntil Mincha and the custom is to siton low chairs like mourners untilmidday. Our observance of mourningalso forbids us from greeting friendson Tisha B'Av.

We mourn the Temple that wasdestroyed over nineteen hundred yearsago and we pray that in the merit ofour mourning we will be worthy to seeGod rebuild the Temple in ourlifetime.

THE COMMITTEE

As part of our celebration of the125th anniversary of KJ we areundertaking several projects that weexpect will prove useful to theCongregation. First, we are using ourarchives to select items, recalling thepast, which will appear in the KJBulletins of this anniversary year.Second, we intend to refurbish thearchives, replacing the current, oldfile boxes with new, sturdier onesthat are easier to handle. We wantalso to create a pleasanter, moreprotected storage area for thearchives.

Our main goal is to make the

archives accessible to scholars andstudents of American Jewish History. We are being advised by SteveSiegel, Archivist of the 92nd StreetY, and with his help, the work will beunderway this summer. This firststage should be completed within theyear. As part of the archives project,we have scheduled visits with thearchivists of Shearith Israel, TheSpanish and Portuguese Synagogueand Central Synagogue. We will alsovisit the newly established museumof Temple Emanuel seekinginformation and ideas that canbenefit our community.

KJ ARCHIVES EXPLOREDYOUR DOCUMENTS WANTED!

Our second major project is an oralhistory of members of the congregationwho have been involved with the majorcommitments of KJ to maximumJewish education (our work forYeshiva University and the signalachievement of Ramaz) to Israel, tothe successful rescue efforts of SovietJewry and to the enhanced role ofwomen in Jewish life and worship. We

will work with experienced peoplewho will provide the necessaryguidance. We will start the work ofplanning and assume that such a majorundertaking will extend well beyondthis anniversary year. If we aresuccessful, we will have valuableinformation that will enrich ourunderstanding of these historic effortsand achievements.

MEMBERS SOUGHT FOR ORAL HISTORY

We also aim to create a changinglobby exhibit of documents and otheritems identified with our history. Ifyou have items to submit or lend tothis effort, please contact RobertLeifert at the Synagogue office (427-1000).

Our thanks to Professor NaomiMiller who is chairing this committeeand to its members Rae Gurewitsch,Yvonne Koppel-Kopans, and TobyJoseph who took considerable time towork on our dusty ancient basementfiles.

YOUR ARCHIVES —OUR ARCHIVES

Since we want the KJ archives tobe as complete as we can make them,we ask that anyone who hasm e m o r a b i l i a — p h o t o g r a p h s ,correspondence with our rabbis— pastand present—and with other membersof the synagogue staff, dinnerjournals, minutes of committeemeetings — anything that youthought worth keeping, is probablyimportant enough to be a part of theKJ archives. Even if you prefer tokeep these papers, let us know thatyou have them and allow us to listthem with other documents in ourarchives.

On the eve of summer, when thedesire to discard long held papersbecomes almost irresistible, we askthat you reconsider, and instead ofdiscarding them, send them all to us.
