The reality is leadership will never be measured by what one person is able to accom-plish as a result of his or her

Chairman looks back at accomplishments of ’14

It is with very mixed emo-tions I write this article as this is my last article as chairman of the board for the Wilkes Chamber of Com-merce. During my time in Wilkes County, I have been involved in several great organizations, but I have to admit being the Chair-man of the Board for the Chamber of Commerce has been one of the most fulfill-ing things I have ever done. Having the ability to see the Chamber of Commerce at work and observing the many facets of Wilkes County has been very eye-opening. Whether it is meeting with local businesses, visiting various sites, or working through the board or our governmental leaders to make a difference in other areas, I have enjoyed every bit of it. We are so blessed to be able to be a part of Wilkes County.

I was reminded of this just recently. On Wednesday, Nov. 19, I had the pleasure of being able to attend the “Reel Cutting” for the Two Rivers Cinema. The outpouring of support from the community was some-thing to behold. The theatre lobby had standing room only. Seeing so many great people assembled in one place made me proud to be of part this wonderful County. Also, seeing such a great addition to this community really warmed my heart and made me even more excited about what the future holds.

In addition, many other things stick out to me in 2014. These include the vari-ous announcements for jobs throughout the county and the great momentum we are building as a community. I have seen

many companies looking to grow and hire people and that is always great news. Additionally, I have seen the community come together on various occasions to sup-port one another and help others in need.

Having an EPA (Enthusi-astic Positive Attitude) has been crucial for 2014. We all have our fair share of chal-lenges, but I feel great that we were able to overcome and grow from them.

First and foremost, I would like to thank God for

everything he does for me. Also, special thanks to my wife and children for their support. It took a team to make sure I could fulfill my obligations this year and I appreciate and love them with all of my heart. I would also like to thank the chamber members of Wilkes County for allowing me the privilege of being able to serve them this year. It was a great honor and one I will cherish forever.

Additionally, I’d like to thank Linda, Lynn, Crissy, and Wendy for all they do for our Chamber. Their plate is so full, yet they handle everything seamlessly and successfully. I would also like to thank my fellow board and executive commit-tee members. We have a team full of dili-gent people who support the chamber and Wilkes County. This team would do everything they can to make sure we are successful as a county. Finally, I’d like to thank Gene Faile for agreeing to serve as chairman of the board for 2015. I know he will do a spectacular job for our chamber and I will be there to help and support him in any way I can.

ing workforce and the difficulties in hiring skilled labor. The visits also included a tour of the manufacturing facility enabling us to see the production lines in operation at which time I quickly noticed the lack of employees working around the equipment and machinery.

The machinery was being operated by technology that was observed by a limited number of employees.

In a recent article featured in TIME magazine, writer Rana Foroohar stated, “Today’s U.S. factories aren’t the noisy places where your grandfather knocked in four bolts a minute for eight hours a day. Dungarees and lunch pails are out; computer skills and specialized training are in, since the new made-in-America economics is centered largely on cutting-edge technologies.”

This statement holds true in Wilkes County’s manufacturing. In years past when I’ve toured textile mills there would be rows of employed sewers sitting at machines sewing fabric pieces as rapidly as possible as they worked diligently to reach their production goal.

Today, the sewing is completed by massive automated sewing machines with large spools of thread attached. There’s one employee located at the end of each line that’s responsible for the machines operation checking the automation and observing the spools of thread making sure they feed the machines or need replacing. At times in other automated manufacturing pro-cesses, we saw employees stationed at computers watching the machines manufacture the products.

We read that throughout the United States there are industries developing new manufacturing techniques way ahead of global competitors and are using these to produce goods more efficiently on super automated factory floors.

These factories have more machines and fewer workers—and those workers must be able to master the machines. We learned that many new manufacturing jobs require at least a two-year tech degree to complement artisan skills such as weld-ing or milling.

As new technology is engaged, the bar will only get higher. We read that some experts believe it won’t be too long before employers will expect a four-year

degree—a job qualification that will even-tually be required in many other places around the world too.

To prepare our youth for these super automated manufacturers, Wilkes County Schools and Wilkes Community College have implemented numerous technical programs that offer the edu-cation and training to meet the skills needs.

They include programs such as STEM in the Wilkes County middle schools, a project based curriculum designed to challenge and engage the natural curiosity of students. The program is a three-tiered framework encompassing integration of STEM concepts, use of individual and collaborative classroom technology and project-based learning that promotes criti-cal thinking skills.

Wilkes Community College’s Indus-tr ial and Workforce Development Division includes departments of Architectural & Building Construction Technology, Engineering Technology, Transportation Technology, Advanced Manufacturing & Materials, and Horti-culture & Bio-Agriculture Technology. A few of the many areas of study provided by the division include architectural technology, automotive systems tech-

nology, collision repair and refinishing technology, building construction tech-nology, computer engineering, electron-ics engineering, heavy equipment and transportation technology, horticulture technology, industrial systems technol-ogy and welding technology.

Wilkes County has committed to become an NC Works Certified Work Ready Community (CWRC). This provides counties with a framework to validate that they have a skilled workforce ready to fill current and future jobs.

Partners in the CWRC initiative include the N.C. Community Colleges System, N.C. Department of Public Instruction, N.C. Department of Commerce, the North Caro-lina Chamber and numerous economic/workforce development entities through-out the state.

To obtain the certification, coun-ties must achieve established goals of individuals earning a National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC) along with business recognition and recom-mendation of qualified NCRC applicants in their hiring process. To learn more about the CWRC for your business or industry, contact Dan Little with the Wilkes Economic Development Corpo-ration 838-1501.

to a realization that the county had a need for well informed, knowledgeable, educated leaders to guide the commu-nity into a successful future. So far, Leadership Wilkes has had 229 men and women gain a greater understanding of what is involved in leading a community and the challenges each person serving in a lead-ership capacity has to face to be successful.

As president of the cham-ber, I have the opportunity to facilitate this leadership pro-gram. As I plan and schedule each session, my goal is to make sure Leadership Wilkes participants receive a good overview of county and town management, planning, map-ping, law enforcement, emer-gency needs, social and health services.

We include sessions that cover communication, utilities,

and infrastructure, healthcare, education, and nonprofit orga-nizations while making them aware of the number of ser-vices provided.

Leadership Wilkes partici-pants are introduced to local business and industry man-agement and given the oppor-tunity to tour manufacturing facilities that allow class par-ticipants to learn more about the local economy, human resource/workforce needs, and the work life of our county citizens. Upon completion of the nine sessions, Leader-ship Wilkes participants have experienced visually much of the county while gaining a knowledge and understanding far exceeding anything they could have read about.

Leadership Wilkes 2014 par-ticipants included Jared Belk, Wilkes County Health Depart-ment; Jane Blackburn, Appa-lachian Regional Library; Lee K. Cornett, Wilkes Community College; Jane Corley, Wilkes Regional Medical Center; Greta

Ferguson, Wilkes Circles of Care/North Wilkesboro Hous-ing; Amber Garwood, US Cel-lular; Amber Herman, Wilkes Community College; Kim Hol-land, Hugh Chatham Memo-rial Hospital; Shelia Jones, Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care; April Marr, Wilkes County Schools; Missy Mayberry, Lowe’s Companies; Randy Miller, Wilkes Commu-nity College; Michael Rhea, LP Corporation; Wesley Stone, LP Corporation; Chad Treadway, Cube Design; Crissy Triplette, Wilkes Chamber of Commerce; Janet Vannoy, Allstate Insur-ance-Tonda Phillips and Pam White, Pruitt Healthcare.

The Wilkes Chamber of Commerce encourages non-profit and government agen-cies to consider a Leadership Wilkes graduate as they make selections for future advisory council and board members. Call on them because they’re a group of informative people willing to share their leader-ship abilities with others.

2014 Chamber Ambassadors are Terrian Carter, Addison Proper-ties Inc.; April Nichols, Barium Springs Home for Children; Laura Hubbard, Gentiva Home Health Care; Carla Souther Hauser, Carla Souther Hauser Financial Ser-vices; Cynthia Staley; Shana Wil-liams, Sharp Business Systems; Charlie Silva, Blue Skies Hyp-nosis Center; Austin Balf, Farm
