The CGR Process

CGR is not EGR• EGR is recycling exhaust gas form exhaust manifold

to intake manifold on low pressure and temperature

• CGR is recycling combustion gas from one cylinder to another cylinder on high pressure and temperature

• EGR displaces intake air but CGR does not!• CGR alters the gas cycle but EGR does not!

The early-early timed CGR

Best cleans emission at the expense of performance or fuel savings.Smallest and least expensive direct flow CR manifold configuration.

The late-late timed CGR

Optimal performance booster, fuel saver and emission cleaner.

The early-late timed CGR

Best controllable good performer, fuel saver and emission cleaner.

The TDC short timed CGR

Best combustion and fuel savings with good emission cleaning at the expense of torque with power preserved, but challenging to valve it.

The TDC long timed CGR

Good fuel saver and emission cleaner with conserved performance.Easy to command with desmodromic or hydraulic CGR poppet valve.

CGR configurations

• Common Rail Manifold (with direct gas flow between cylinders)

• Buffered (with gas flow between a cylinder and a pressure tank)

• Multi-cylinder• Single cylinder• Four stroke• Two stroke

CGR valve types• Cam driven poppet valves (TDC-CGR only)• Internally piloted electro-pneumatic • Externally piloted electro-pneumatic• Electro-hydraulic (for all CGR gas cycle types)

The main benefits of CGR

• Saves fuel and/or• Boosts power and/or torque and• Cleans emission !

Boosts volumetric, thermal and combustion efficiency. Non-mechanically boosts effective compression ratio.

Proof of concept car with CGR

• A 2010 turbo-diesel 2L VW Jetta I-4 TDI with EGR was supplemented with cam driven CGR

CGR side benefits• Considerable engine downsizing possibility• Automatic HCCI assist effect (TDC-CGR)• Turbo-lag reduction or elimination• Elimination of afterburning with fuel injection• Savings in exhaust after-treatment hardware• Trading fuel for power or torque or emission• Can burn any diesel oil mined or harvested• New adaptive engine control method• Works equally in small or large engines• Need no new technique but new technology
