Our Parish - Our Pledge My church is composed of people like me. I help make it what it is. It will be friendly, if I am. Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them. It will do great work, if I work. It will make generous gifts to many causes, if I am a generous giver. It will bring other people into its worship and fellowship, if I invite and bring them. It will be a church of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, and a church with a noble spirit, if I, who make it, am filled with these same things. Therefore, with the help of God, I shall dedicate myself to the task of being all the things that I want my church to be.

Sixth Sunday of Easter St. Cecilia Church, Leominster MA May 6, 2018
A Message From Our Pastor.
Dear Friends, It is both easy and difficult to talk about love, Christian love. It is easy because we are all in favor of love. Who doesn’t want to love and be loved in return? No one goes around says, “I really enjoy hating people and I hope there’s lots of people who hate me.” But it is also difficult because everyone has a different definition of what love is. The first thing which is hard to grasp is that love, if it is authentic, has no limits. Love has less to do with the romantic love of a first kiss and more to do with waking up at 2:00 AM to change the baby’s diaper or holding the hand of a dying spouse. Love makes demands on us. Yes, there is champagne and roses at times, but that is its own reward. It is a limited, and therefore inauthen-tic, love that insists that everything I want I get. Love, St. Thomas Aquinas tells us, is wishing for the other the highest good you could imagine for yourself. That makes sense. We never want what’s bad in our own lives, so we wish the same good things we want in the lives of those we love. That’s a good starting point, but that’s not the whole story when we are talking about Christian love. Remember in today’s first reading, St. Peter realizes, “In truth, I see that God shows no partiality. Rather, in every nation whoever fears him and acts uprightly is acceptable to him.” So now we cannot limit our love to a particular nation or ethnicity or racial group. God’s love encompasses all, and so must ours. Then, in today’s readings, comes that beautiful passage from St. John’s first epistle. “Let us love one another, because love is of God; everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God. Whoever is without love does not know God, because GOD IS LOVE.” Indeed, our Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI, began his first encyclical letter with this quote from St. John, adding that those words are the sum total of the Church’s message to the world. We, as members of the Church must give witness to that message by the way we live our lives. Just quoting from Scripture is not enough. It has to be what we live and the way we treat others. I recently read someone say, “’Practice what you preach’ doesn’t mean anything. If you practice it, you don’t have to preach it.” So it is for us. We don’t have to quote St. Peter or St. John or St. Thomas Aquinas or even Pope Benedict. We just have to live the love we have been given by Our Savior and be witnesses to a new and fearless way of being human. Loving first, foremost and always. Loving with Christ’s love in order to bring about God’s Kingdom on our earth. May God bless you all, Father Bob Bruso
