THEME: IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST SUB-THEME: The Supremacy of Jesus Christ over Biblical heroes (6) TOPIC: Jesus and David TEXTS: Psalm 45:6-8; 103:19; Isaiah 9:6-7; 11:1-5. AIMS:

i. to open up the confession of King David concerning the coming Messiah and ii. to explain further the supremacy of Jesus kingship over that of David.

INTRODUCTION: David was king over Israel. However, he wrote of a kingdom of justice which sets forth the everlasting kingdom of Christ. (Psalm 45:6-7). The Messiah is twice called “God” and that He has been anointed by God over His “companions”. David also wrote in Psalm 102:25-27 and 103:19- presenting the future Christ in prophetic terms. These were corroborated in Revelation 11:15 and 12:10 concerning the everlasting kingdom of God and of His Christ which takes pre-eminence over the temporal earthly kingdoms. STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS: 1. From 1Sam 7:10-13 and Isa 9:6-7 Explain why Jesus Christ should be born from the tribe of

Judah. 2. Compare Psalm 45:6-7 with Phil 2:8-10 and confirm the supremacy of Jesus Christ over King

David. 3. How are some worldly rulers mocking the King of kings? Dan 3:15; Acts 12:20-23. 4. Why is the kingdom of Christ superior to that of King David? 2 Sam 7:12; 1Kings 2:1-2,10;

Rev 11:15; 12:10. CONCLUSION It was mandatory for the Messiah to be born of a woman, therefore, God fulfilled the promise He made to King David and through Isaiah the prophet, and He sent Jesus Christ to the world through the tribe of Judah. His revelation of an anointed ruler of the heavenly Kingdom confirmed that even while on earth King, David was inspired to see a Messiah enthroned in heaven by the Lord Almighty. FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Earthly thrones will expire but Jesus’ throne is from everlasting to everlasting. MEMORY VERSE: Rev 11:15 “The seventh angel sounded, and great voices in heaven followed, saying, “The kingdom of the world has become the Kingdom of our Lord, and of his Christ. He will reign forever and ever!”

ON THE OTHER SIDE

An elderly couple was on a road trip. The wife, who couldn’t hear very well, was doing the driving. They topped for petrol, and a man at another petrol pump said, “That is the nicest car I’ve ever seen.

What kind is it?” The husband told him it was a Mercedes. “What did he say?” shouted the wife. The husband told her that the man just wanted to know what

kind of car they drove. The man at the pump asked, “Where are you from?” The husband told him they were from Ijebu,

Ogun State. “What did he say?” called the wife. “He wanted to know where we are from,” reported the husband. The man at the pump said, “That’s where I met a woman a few years back. She was the meanest

woman I have ever met!” “What did he say?” hollered the wife. “He said he thinks he knows your sister,” the husband said.

PRAYER FOR THE YEAR

Almighty God, the King of kings, You rule over all in heaven and on earth and Your reign is everlasting. Thank You for the grace to be citizens of Your Kingdom, make us understand our place in this kingdom, help us to represent Your interest very well on earth, enable us to comport ourselves as worthy ambassadors of Your Kingdom and Strengthen us to make known the peace and joy and all other benefits that come with Your rule in the world that through us the whole Creation will be delivered from its futility and hopelessness and in the end may we receive the crown of glory and shine as stars in Your eternal kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THY KINGDOM COME, O LORD - A&MRW 816 Tune: St. Cecilia

1. Thy kingdom come, O God,

thy rule, O Christ, begin; break with thine iron rod the tyrannies of sin.

2 Where is thy reign of peace and purity and love? When shall all hatred cease, as in the realms above?

3

When comes the promised time that war shall be no more, and lust, oppression, crime

shall flee thy face before?

4. We pray thee, Lord, arise, and come in thy great might; revive our longing eyes, which languish for thy sight. 5 Men scorn thy sacred name, and wolves devour thy fold; by many deeds of shame we learn that love grows cold.

6

O’er lands both near and far thick darkness broodeth yet: arise, O Morning Star, arise, and never set!

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.” - Matthew 5:13&14 Today, we move on to what is expected of a Christian in Business. As we all know, a business is a commercial activity engaged in as a means of livelihood or profit, or an entity which engages in such activities. Both Christians and Non-Christians engage in Business for profit and livelihood. However, the Business arena is viewed, by many, as an extremely dangerous terrain for Christians as a result of all kinds of immoral act that are being perpetrated in a bid to increase gains and profit. No thanks to the popular idea that “there is no morality in business” which covertly promotes the notion that one could do anything to make it in Business. Tax evasion (Non-payment or underpayment of tax), Over invoicing (Increasing fraudulently the price of a good or service), Round tripping (inflating revenue to make a company look it is doing more business than it really is), Advance fee fraud, Breach of Contract, non payment of workers’ salaries, Failure to deliver all the goods, substituting inferior or significantly different goods and using dishonest scales are defining characteristics of today’s Business world. The list of illegalities is endless, unfortunately, some Christians in business are also guilty of all these illegalities. In the midst of gross confusion and corruption, the question is: How should a Christian act in business to reflect Christ and the Kingdom of His Father and ultimately change the terrain, making it conducive and profitable to all and sundry? The fact remains, God rules all aspects of our lives, Christians in business must be cognizant of this fact in doing their business. They must be mindful of Jesus’ statement in John 17:14 that they are in the world, but they are not of the World. Meaning that they cannot do business like the rest. The way and manner they go about their business should portray who they are. Jesus describes the believers as the salt of the earth and light of the world that will bring about the much-desired positive change in the world. (Matthew 5:13&14). The Christian that will manifest in Business to make a difference must be ready to run his/her business with unquestionable ethics. Ethics and character boarder on what you do when no one is looking. Integrity is the quality of being honest and fair. A Christian businessman/woman must demonstrate integrity in making business decisions. All his/her actions must be based on God’s standard and principle of truth,

righteousness & honesty. He/She must be committed to excellence in his/her services and products. Titus 3:8 says, “those who have trusted God must devote themselves to doing what is good, things that are excellent and profitable for everyone.”

Manifesting to make a difference also involves promoting harmonious labour relations and meaningful work experiences through appropriate management practices i.e treating employees fairly, providing a fair wage and being sensitive to one’s personal and family needs. Albert F. Bayly (1901-1984) in

Coming Events (October-November, 2020)

SOUL FOOD 38/2020

Hymns Ancient and Modern New Standard (A&MNS) 432 expatiates on God’s expectations of Masters of wealth and trade, the Entrepreneurs whom men toil for and urges them to “do justly, love mercy and walk humbly with God.” As Christians, we can all make a difference, whether ours is a multi-million-naira business employing hundreds of people or a small organisation working with volunteers. Being a Christian in business means more than simply not swearing or being closed on Sundays. It is a lifestyle where Christ is reflected in all that one does and says. Since God rules all aspects of our lives, we are not merely Sunday Christians. We should take what we learn on Sundays and apply it to our lives throughout the week. If all of life is religion, then a Christian business leader is engaged in ministry. He or she must reflect Christ when dealing with customers, with employees, with suppliers, and with the bank. Remember Jesus’ saying in Matthew 5:13 “if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.” Failure to reflect Christ in our business transactions means losing our saltiness and hiding our lamps under the bushel which are inconsistent with our confession and identity in Christ Jesus. I pray that none of us doing business will ever lose our saltiness in Jesus name. Amen

Have a blessed week!
