First Reading : Jeremiah 20.7-13 O LORD, you have enticed me, and I was enticed; you have overpowered me, and you have prevailed. I have become a laughing-stock all day long; everyone mocks me. For whenever I speak, I must cry out, I must shout, ‘Violence and destruction!’ For the word of the LORD has become for me a reproach and derision all day long. If I say, ‘I will not mention him, or speak any more in his name’, then within me there is something like a burning fire shut up in my bones; I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot. For I hear many whispering: ‘Terror is all around! Denounce him! Let us denounce him!’ All my close friends are watching for me to stumble. ‘Perhaps he can be enticed, and we can prevail against him, and take our revenge on him.’ But the LORD is with me like a dread warrior; therefore my persecutors will stumble, and they will not prevail. They will be greatly shamed, for they will not succeed.

The Collects, Post Communion Prayer, Readings and Music for the 8.00am, 9.00am, 11.45am and 6.00pm services

The Collect for The First Sunday after Trinity O God, the strength of all those who put their trust in you, mercifully accept our prayers and, because through the weakness of our mortal nature we can do no good thing without you, grant us the help of your grace, that in the keeping of your commandments we may please you both in will and deed; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Post Communion for The First Sunday after Trinity Eternal Father, we thank you for nourishing us with these heavenly gifts: may our communion strengthen us in faith, build us up in hope, and make us grow in love; for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Their eternal dishonour will never be forgotten. O LORD of hosts, you test the righteous, you see the heart and the mind;

let me see your retribution upon them, for to you I have committed my cause. Sing to the LORD; praise the LORD! For he has delivered the life of the needy from the hands of evildoers.

This is the Word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.

Second Reading: Romans 6.1b-11 Should we continue in sin in order that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin go on living in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. For whoever has died is freed from sin. But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. The death he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. This is the Word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.

Psalm 69. 7-10, 17-19 7. And why? for thy sake have I suffered reproof * shame hath covered my face. 8. I am become a stranger unto my brethren * even an alien unto my mother’s children. 9. For the zeal of thine house hath even eaten me * and the rebukes of them that rebuked thee are fallen upon me. 10. I wept, and chastened myself with fasting * and that was turned to my reproof. 17. Hear me, O Lord, for thy loving-kindness is comfortable * turn thee unto me according to the multitude of thy mercies. 18. And hide not thy face from thy servant, for I am in trouble * O haste thee, and hear me. 19. Draw nigh unto my soul, and save it * O deliver me, because of mine enemies. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son * and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be * world without end. Amen.

Gospel Reading: Matthew 10.24-39 Jesus summoned the twelve and sent them out with the following instruction: ‘A disciple is not above the teacher, nor a slave above the master; it is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher, and the slave like the master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household! So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known. What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim from the housetops. Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground unperceived by your Father. And even the hairs of your head are all counted. So do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows. Everyone therefore who acknowledges me before others, I also will acknowledge before my Father in heaven; but whoever denies me before others, I also will deny before my Father in heaven. Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and one’s foes will be members of one’s own household. Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoev-er loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up the cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it.’ This is the Gospel of the Lord. ALL Praise to you, O Christ.

Anthem (9.00am) O salutaris Hostia (Ēriks Ešenvalds) O salutaris Hostia, Quae cæli pandis ostium: Bella premunt hostilia, Da robur, fer auxilium. Uni trinoque Domino Sit sempiterna gloria, Qui vitam sine termino Nobis donet in patria. Amen. Latin hymn by St Thomas Aquinas, tr. J. M. Neale

O saving Victim, open wide the gate of heaven to man below; our foes press on from every side; thine aid supply; thy strength bestow. All praise and thanks to thee ascend for evermore, blest One in Three; O grant us life that shall not end in our true native land with thee. Amen.

Filming In Church Please note that on Sunday 29th June, the Feast of St Peter and St Paul, there will be a short period of filming during the 9.00am Sung Eucharist as part of the enhancement of our new cathedral website. Just before the sermon slot we will film a 360 degree shot of the cathedral, including the congregation, to provide an online virtual tour of St John’s for those visiting the website. For those who are a little camera shy this notice is just to forewarn you but for the more photogenic among us, perhaps it’s time for a new ‘hair do’?

Parents and Toddlers Thursday Group We meet each week 2.30—4.30pm at St John’s to welcome parents and babies—newborn to 2 years. We hope new comers to Hong Kong and St John’s will find a warm welcome and meet new friends. Call Vanda Cole if you would like more in-formation 2855 7074.

But in the autumn, he will move from Durham to become the next Dean of the internationally renowned King’s College, Cambridge.

Stephen’s visit to Hong Kong has included a preachment at Emmanuel Church, Pokfulam last Sunday and a talk on ‘Barefoot Spirituality’ here at St John’s last Wednesday evening.

Stephen wrote ‘Barefoot Disciple: Walking the Way of Passionate Humility’ (Continuum Publishing ISBN: 9781441182869) which was chosen as the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Lent Book in 2011.

My Involvement with St. John’s: Koon-G Chiu

Hello! My name is Koon-G. Most people call me “G”, by saying the seventh letter of the alphabet. Others prefer to call me Koon-G (pronounced as “Koon Gee”).

I went to school in England and was baptised and confirmed in Canterbury Cathedral. So when I completed all my studies and came back to Hong Kong to work, it was natural for me to look for an Anglican place of worship.

When I first started attending the Mattins service, I volunteered to do one of the readings for the Dean. I continue to be one of the readers in the 11.45am service.

Soon later, I was invited to join the Guild of Sidesmen, which I was pleased to accept. I am now continuing to help at the 11.45am service.

As there was no bible study group, another parishioner and I worked to form a group that meets regularly. We thought that reading the bible alone is often difficult, but reading it with other people generates different ideas. Our aim was to establish a comfortable environment for all parishioners to talk.

For many years now, others and I have been leading this bible fellowship study group (known as “Bible Reading Fellowship” or BRF) that meets every Tuesday from 7.00 to 8.00pm. I do hope that I can meet you there. There is no advance preparation or homework to be done. We have lively and friendly discussions over the readings presented to us every Sunday. We exchange ideas as to how we conduct our daily lives so as to live up to the challenges presented to us by the bible.

I am thankful for all those who are involved with the BRF. Through our discussions, I have learnt a great deal from them. I hope I can have the opportunity to welcoming you soon at our group. All you have to do is to turn up at 7.00pm.

As a way to help us understand our Cathedral Community and its ministry, there will be a feature article in the Pew Bulletin every fourth Sunday of the month.

DO YOU WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT ST JOHN’S ?
