SUB THEME: POLITICS AND CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP.

TOPIC: Christians in Politics: The Church’s Role.TEXT: 2 Kings 12:1-2; 1 Tim.2:1-3.

AIMS: To

i. know that Christians can vote or enlighten each other to vote;ii.campaign or pray against agents of Satan in politics;iii. Mobilize members to get into politics;iv. Support Christians who go into politics.

INTRODUCTION:That the Church has a very huge stake in the governance of any nation is a fact that cannot be contested successfully. There are, however, very sad indications that either the Church has been blind to this fact or she has chosen to be “praying”, “waiting” and “hoping” for positive changes in the political landscape (James 2:20), and never receiving any better or fair deal. Should the Church continue in this characteristic levity or begin to take the requisite responsibility that should enable her assert herself accordingly? This is the main burden of today’s study.

STUDY GUIDE 1. Is there any relationship between the Church and politics?2. With reference to the above stated aims, what roles have the

Church in politics and governance? 1 Sam.10:1; 16:13; 12:23;Titus 3:1; Gen.41:1, 17, 25.

3. From the story of Jehoiada and Joash (2 Kings 12:2), identifysome of the Church’s basic responsibilities in nurturing andinfluencing political activities and actors.

4. What responsibilities do Christians owe those in government?Rom.13:1-7; 1 Tim.2:1-3; 2 Samuel 12:1-7; 2 Kings 1:1-8;12:2 (cf.2 Chron.24:17-20).

5. In the light of all the previous questions and answers above, would you say the Church today has done well in her rolesconcerning believers and others in politics? Discuss.

CONCLUSION:The retrogressionthat has bedeviledNigeria is an indicative of the failure of the Church to assume her rightful place and roles in society. Jehoiada was available for Joash, and the effect was tremendous. The Church should take a cue from this and begin to do the needful as that is the most promising way to remedy and help with the ugly state of affairs of Nigeria’s politics.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Nigeria will be a better place if God’s Church

will wake up to her responsibilities.

GOD’S WILL FOR

THE LOST.

“Which of you men, if you had one hundred sheep and lost one of them, wouldn’t leave the ninety nine in the wilderness and go after the one that was lost, until he found it”? Luke 15:4.

The Bible does not miss words about the state of every human being. All are sinners (Rom. 3:23). There is no one that is righteous. Rom. 3:10-12. Our righteousness, the best, the good works we can offer is like filthy rags (Isa. 64:6). We are all lost, because through the first Adam sin came to the world; and we inherited the old nature of first Adam. We are just like the lost sheep and the coin; we can not trace our way back to the fold. We remain lost and dead in our sins. But thanks to great shepherd who diligently seek for us to redeem us and he demonstrated his love for us and he died for our sins. I Tim 1:15 says “The saying is faithful and worthy of all acceptances, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.

The focus of text and the theme is more on the great and chief shepherd

who demonstrated tremendous love on the lost sheep. He abandoned the ninety nine sheep and sought for the only one that is lost and having find it, there was a joy in heaven over a sinner that repented. Jesus Christ came to this world to seek for the lost sheep of the house of Israel of which we are one. A thief come to steal, to kill and to destroy and Jesus our master come to save us from our sins and give us life and life abundantly. John 10:10

The will of God for the lost one is for them to come back to the fold in order to have life. God is not delighted in the death of sinners. Jesus came to rescue the perishing; He came to care for the dying. He came to draw us to the father, He came to repair the broken bridge and as well take us back to God.

The will of God for his children is for us to manifest His glory. Our God is slow to anger. In Luke 15:11-32. This passage demonstrated the act of compassion God has on all miserable sinners.).

Brethren we have a father who is eagerly waiting for us and is filled with compassion to bestow on us the best robe, a ring on the finger and sandals on our feet. If that we may truly repent of our sin and return from every form of our rebellious way of life. The celebration will be for us and our glory will rise and shine.
