Dear CBA Family,

At the close of another successful school year, I am pleased to report that our tradition of excellence continues. Scholarship awards continue to arrive for the Class of 2019, and as our graduates move on to study at some of the best colleges and universities in the country, our 100% college acceptance rate is extended. To date, our graduates have earned more than $16.8 million in scholarships to study at some of the nation’s finest institutions, including Brown University, Dartmouth College, Hamilton College, Villanova University, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, RPI, RIT, WPI, Union, Siena, George Washington, Bentley, Clarkson, Clemson, Syracuse, Fordham, Northeastern, Providence, and College of the Holy Cross. For the third year in a row, our valedictorian will attend the University of Notre Dame.

As our graduates leave Christian Brothers Academy to take on the challenges of college, they do so well-prepared for academic success. Their futures are launched from a solid foundation in which their moral and religious education is integrated into their academic education, in the Lasallian tradition. To enhance this experience for our students, we welcome two veteran Christian Brothers to our faculty. Brother James Dries and Brother Timothy Jones will join the CBA faculty in the fall. Brother James will teach chemistry and work in the administration and Brother Timothy will teach theology and work in campus ministry. In addition, we will welcome our first Lasallian Volunteer to CBA. AnnaMarie Carmazzi, a recent graduate from Saint Mary’s College, our college in Moraga, California, will assist our administration, counselors, and teachers in working with students receiving accommodations.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

May 15 was a special day at Christian Brothers Academy. On the Feast of Saint John Baptist de La Salle, we held our second annual BronationDay. Thanks to the support of 702 donors, our online giving day raised $109,150. With the funds raised from Bronation Day, we will be able to complete a much-needed renovation of the lecture hall. During our BronationDay activities, Brother Thomas Casey, Auxiliary Visitor for our District, visited to present John Picotte ’59 with the Letters of Benefaction. The Letters are reserved as a formal honor by the Brothers for important services rendered to the Lasallian mission. The Brothers expressed their sincere thanks and gratitude to John for his long-time, generous support of CBA and the Christian Brothers.

Over the past decade, we have grown, but our vision was always to be the best school in the area. Now, our sole focus is on continuous improvement to give our students a premiere educational experience. To that end, we will continually add programs and enhance our facilities because our students deserve the best. We are blessed to have such a united community, with undying love for CBA, who have proven that they will support this great institution. With the strength of the CBA family, I am confident that we will accomplish our goals.

I wish you a wonderful summer and thank you for everything you do in support of Christian Brothers Academy.

St. John Baptist de La Salle, Pray for us. Live Jesus in our hearts, forever!

Sincerely, Dr. James Schlegel Head of School

CBA’s 2nd annual #BronationDay raised $109,150.80 from 702 donors, breaking last year’s record and allowing us to modernize our lecture hall. #BronationDay is a full day of giving, fun and school spirit.

The Class of 1959 was welcomed back to campus and joined students in the cafeteria for lunch. CBA surprised John D. Picotte ’59 with a special ceremony in the gym, where students, his family, friends, classmates and the Christian Brothers surprised him with the highest honor we bestow upon a person – Benefaction. Brother Tom Casey, FSC announced that John will now have BFSC next to his name as a benefactor of the Christian Brothers per approval that came from Rome, Italy. John received a certificate announcing his benefaction and a chair with the crest and his name engraved in it. John also got a special visit from one of his scholarship awardees from the Class of 1999. David Wimbush ’99 traveled from Atlanta, GA to thank John for allowing him to receive a CBA education that led to acceptance into West Point Military Academy and a 16-year career in the armed forces.

This special day was made possible through the support and donations from Albany Empire Arena Football, Stewart’s Shops, Tracy Kaback Photography, DJ Ketchup, David Wimbush ’99, Brother Tom Casey, FSC, The Class of ’59 and C. David Yezzi ’59, Phil Farinacci ’04 and all the CBA Faculty and Staff. Thank you!

WATER FOR SOUTH SUDANFour years ago, the freshman class read the book “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park. The novel shares the story of a lost boy, Salva Dut, who fled his wartorn country of Sudan in search of a better life. Many years after settling in Rochester, NY, Salva started the nonprofit Water for South Sudan to bring life-changing clean water to remote rural communities in South Sudan. After finishing the book, our ambitious and caring boys asked Mrs. Sayre if they could raise money to help build a well. That year, the freshmen donated more than $1,000. Since that spring in 2016, more freshman classes have also raised money for a well, which costs $15,000. At the start of this school year, we were still $10,000 away from that number. Mrs. Sayre asked the 9th graders this year to extend their reach to the entire CBA community. The boys and the community did not disappoint! Administrators, teachers, family and friends gathered together, and on April 12, Mrs. Sayre announced that we reached our goal. Because of the generosity of this school community, our seniors graduated knowing that their vision as freshmen has made the world a better place.

JROTC LEADERSHIP AWARDSOn May 2, the JROTC department hosted the annual Leadership Awards Night in the Ned McGraw Gymnasium. Veteran, military and civic organizations came together to recognize our cadets. Awards were presented in leadership, academics, extracurriculars and athletics.

PLANNED LEGACY GIVING - UNLOCK YOUR IRA

While there have been many changes to the tax law this past year, the Charitable IRA Rollover provision has remained permanent law. Donors continue to be able to take advantage of the opportunity to support their favorite charities; have the gift count against their required minimum distribution; and not have the amount included in their income. This is especially valuable for donors who do not itemize their tax deductions, as well as for high-net-worth individuals who lose the full value of their itemized deductions.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS:1. You must be age 70 ½ or older on the day of the gift(s).

2. The funds must be transferred directly from your IRA to the qualified charity.

3. The gift must be an outright gift and can be used to satisfy an existing pledge or be a new gift.

4. You can make multiple gifts to charities as long as the total amount of gifts does not exceed $100,000. Spouses with their own IRA can give up to $100,000.

For more information on how you can make your gift using your IRA and help continue the CBA legacy, contact Colleen Ward at (518) 452-9809 ext 113 or email [email protected].

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMANDear CBA Community,

CBA has experienced another exceptional year, as we continue to build upon the collective hard work and positive energy of all those dedicated to keeping CBA at the forefront of education in the Capital District. This has also been a very special year for my family, as our youngest son, Tucker, graduated from CBA, following in his brothers’ footsteps, Dustin ’15 and Forrest ’13. Tucker will be joining his sister, Hope, at Villanova this fall.

On all fronts, CBA continues to fortify its future with a dedicated faculty, administration and board of trustees. Next year, there will be some changes on the board. Mike Van De Loo ’90 has completed his term. Mike has been a board member since 2010, and he and his wife, Kate, have been great supporters of CBA. Mike is an exemplary class captain, getting impressive participation from his classmates. Mike

will continue his busy schedule as a partner with Anderson Tax in New York City and being involved in his sons’ schedules.

I would also like to welcome two new board members, Maureen E. O’Brien and Britt D. Carmer. Maureen’s son, Gabe, will enter 10th grade at CBA. She is currently the president and CEO of NYS Industries for the Disabled (NYSID), managing more than 1,000 state and municipal

contracts on behalf of 135 rehabilitation services. Maureen has a deep commitment to community service, serving on the boards of NF Endurance Team (Children’s Tumor Foundation), executive board member of Double H Ranch, and a trustee at Maria College. Maureen is also the recipient of the Andrew Heiskoll Community Service Award, which is the highest service recognition at Time, Inc.

Britt Carmer is the father of Britt ’19. Britt is president and part owner of Stone Bridge Iron & Steel, Inc. Throughout his son’s tenure at CBA, Britt and his wife, Frieda, have been tireless volunteers and financial supporters of CBA, including serving as chairs of CBA’s annual Purple & Gold Gala, our largest fundraiser. Britt also serves on the Double H Ranch advisory committee and has coached youth baseball and basketball.

Financially, for the 10th year in a row, we ended the fiscal year with a surplus. This summer, several of our teachers will attend La Sallian education programs, which is a cornerstone of perpetuating the CBA mission. Also, we are investing in a complete renovation of our lecture hall and resurfacing our building roof. There are also several other improvements being made to our classrooms.

Funds from our successful $5.2 million capital campaign were dedicated to enhancing academic offerings at CBA, including the addition of a state-of-the-art STEM classroom, a new wing to house our music suite and classrooms, and complete renovation of five science laboratory classrooms. Given the complete modernization of our learning environment, it is now time to consider our athletic spaces. The board and administration are evaluating several improvements to our current gym space and athletic fields. All in all, the board and administration are committed to keeping our school at the forefront of modern learning environment and technology.

I am eternally grateful for all of the support and encouragement that you, the CBA family, have given. The mission of CBA and the Christian Brothers is worthy of our commitment and sacrifice. I thank you in advance for your continued support.

St. John Baptist de La Salle, Pray for us. Live Jesus in our hearts, forever!

Faithfully yours,

Chris Scaringe ’82 Chairman of the Board

If you have included a bequest or made another type of planned gift to benefit CBA, please contact us to let us know. We would like to thank you and recognize your gift by enrolling you in the Saint LaSalle Society. We will honor all requests for anonymity.

If you are thinking about creating your legacy at Christian Brothers Academy, we invite you to visit our new planned giving website, www.cbaalbany.org/estateplanning, to learn how to name CBA as a beneficiary of your will or trust; why retirement plans are the most tax-efficient assets to create your legacy; and how you might use real estate, life insurance, and investment accounts to leave your legacy at CBA.

We are grateful to each of you who are considering leaving a legacy at CBA, and we know that your legacy is very important to you. We are committed to work with you and your financial advisor to make sure we accomplish your goals. If you would like to discuss creating your legacy at CBA, contact Colleen Ward at (518) 452-9809 ext. 113 or [email protected].

PROFILES IN PLANNED GIVING

CBA’S SAINT LASALLE SOCIETYHOWARD NOLAN ’49“I experienced the power of a CBA education and thought of how important it was to my career. I am leaving a legacy in my will so that other families and young men can benefit from that same distinctive education.”

JOSEPH A. REILLY ’56“CBA instilled in me a newfound passion for learning and the need to give back to your community. Those two traits served me well in my career, and I want to make sure that future generations of students will be as fortunate as I was. I know that my planned gift to CBA will do just that!”

LYNN & GENE ZIELINSKI ’58“Realizing what a privilege it was for Gene to attend CBA, we feel young men living in this area should have the same opportunity. We are both part of the CBA family and feel a great sense of pride by supporting CBA now and in the future so that the tradition of a true Catholic education for young men will be there for generations to come.”

CATHY & RICK MANHEY ’64“I feel extremely fortunate to have attended CBA. The discipline, education and sports offered me a well-rounded basis to have a successful life. In honor of all I received being a Brother, I have created a significant estate gift to help solidify the future of CBA for young men for years to come.”

TODD MESICK ’85“CBA holds a special place in my heart. In addition to providing a great education, CBA fostered in me a sense of community and belonging that is not easily replicated. As a parent of a cadet now attending CBA, I have witnessed that the distinctive and impactful education offered is still second to none. I am proud to have made a planned gift so that CBA can continue this legacy.”

CINDY PETTIT, P’03“I am grateful for the education and experiences CBA provided for my son, Brandon. I believe in the mission of CBA and decided to extend my support beyond the Annual Fund to a bequest as my legacy gift to the school. My estate planning was a time to reflect on what organizations had a lasting, positive impact on my family, and CBA was an obvious choice for a bequest.”

“ In every classroom I visited I saw students excited to learn. CBA taught me discipline and respect. The facility and educators provided me the confidence to succeed today and the understanding to build my community and help those in need. From just walking these halls, I can see those values

are still held in the highest regard today.”
