Alumni Spotlight

Satchel Ziffer ‘12 didn’t let his teammates’ good-natured teasing deter him from pursuing his dream of becoming a Division I college football kicker. The place kicker for the 2011 LCHS state championship football team, Ziffer kept his eye on his dream.

Although the path was not direct and required perseverance that playing a sport can teach, Ziffer kept that dream alive while playing Junior College football at Pasadena City College, California, and throughout his college years at Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia.

In 2014, Ziffer played as a place kicker and then in 2015, as the punter at Old Dominion. He was a two year starter and played every game in 2015.

Kicking a game-winning field goal is every kickers dream and Ziffer kicked two game winning field goals for the Monarchs, including a buzzer-beater 28-yard kick to beat Florida International University.

“Going from third-string kicker to first string and kicking the game-winning field goal, there’s nothing like that,” Ziffer said, “It seemed like it was meant to be.”

Not only did Ziffer realize his football dream, he also earned a full athletic scholarship in 2015 at Old Dominion, has been on the Dean’s List every semester and will graduate in 2016.

With additional NCAA eligibility available, Ziffer will attend Boston College next fall to pursue his MBA on a full football athletic scholarship.

Ziffer’s father, Gary, noted that Satchel was one of only two players from the 2011 LCHS team who played at the Division I level. His achievements on the field and in the classroom make the LCHS family proud!

New Year, New ResolutionsIt’s that time of year when we reflect on goals, plans and resolutions. Here are a few from LCHS faculty, staff and students:Joe Loiseau ‘18: “I want to finish the semester and year with all A’s and B’s.”Greg Dietz, School Counselor: “I want to go to the gym and/or run 3-4 times a

week so I can stay in shape for my wedding in July!”Erica Sahd, Science Teacher: “Be more intentional in my interpersonal relationships, thinking less of myself and more of others.”Victoria Reese ‘17: “I want to put people before myself, be less selfish and grow in my faith.

Student Spotlight

Whether exploring the many career options in business or gaining business skills, students participating in Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) are part of a nation-wide organization dedicated to preparing students to be better employees and citizens.

That’s exactly why Catie Leader ‘17 and Rachel Woratyla ‘17 joined FBLA. Both are interested in a future in the business field and wanted to learn more not only about career options, but also the skills necessary to be successful in business.

For Will Roehm ‘16, FBLA has been a natural extension of his interest in business, his entrepreneurial experience of running a lawn mowing business since 2012 and his future plans in real estate investing. Roehm placed first at the regional level last year and ninth at the state level.

Depending on the business category, students compete in several different styles of competition including persuasive presentations and online testing in specific topics like securities and investments.

On December 14, Leader and Woratyla along with other members of the LCHS FBLA club, competed in the Region 18 Conference against other Lancaster County schools. The team’s strong performance indicates that the future of American business is in good hands!

LCHS students recognized at the regional conference include:

Will Roehm - 1st place - Securities and InvestmentsCatie Leader and Rachel Woratyla - 1st place - Business Ethics

Olive Song - 2nd place - Business CalculationsKenny Huhn, Will Riva and Harley Winters - 2nd place -Sports & Entertainment Management

Carolyn Bologa and Emily Steinbeiser - 3rd place - Hospitality ManagementChenchen Hu and Shawn Zeng - 3rd place - Global Business

The first place winners and Olive Song qualified to compete at the state level in April; 65 percent of those who competed for LCHS finished third place or higher.

In Pennsylvania, there are 299 FBLA active chapters organized into 28 different regions, and there were more than 13,600 members during the 2014-2015 school year. Membership is open to students in Grades 9-12 and middle-level membership is open to students in Grades 5-8.

In addition to competition, FBLA students participate in a state-wide fundraising effort. LCHS students will sponsor a snack stand during mid-terms to raise money for this year’s designated non-profit, Ronald McDonald Houses. Congratulations to all of the participants!
