During nationally recognized Catholic Schools Week, held January 31 through February 6, several Lancaster Catholic High School students put into practice the value of Community service. On Tuesday and Wednesday, more than 65 students from Lancaster Catholic went on service trips to St. Anne’s Retirement Community, Off the Streets and the Catholic Worker House as part of the national celebration of Catholic Schools Week. While the students highlighted the service commitments during the week, all Lancaster Catholic students have annually committed more than 15,000 hours to community service as part of the Good Samaritan and Christian Service programs. “Service is fundamental to a Catholic Education,” said Tim Hamer, President, “Our students had the privilege to serve three worthy community organizations and were excited to do so.”

On Tuesday, at the Catholic Worker House, students cleaned windows and lighting fixtures while learning about the activities and services the organization offers to help those in the neighborhood. On Tuesday and Wednesday, a group of students, joined by Hamer and School Principal, Terry Klugh, traveled to a warehouse owned by Off the Streets, a non-profit that helps the homeless get out of shelters or the streets and into a permanent housing situation. Students organized and cleaned furniture, took inventory, created starter packages for upcoming move-ins and learned how the group helps the Lancaster community. “I like doing service like this,” said junior Jon Ware, “I see a lot of people in the city, and really everywhere, that don’t have the same opportunities that I do so I try to do anything I can to make them feel like I do - have something to hold on too, have a place to call my own.” Students also traveled to St. Anne’s Retirement Community to interact with the residents and help them celebrate Mass. The LCHS Concert Choir provided music liturgy for the Mass. Community service was just one part of the ongoing celebration of Catholic Schools Week. The school kicked off the week with a community-wide mass and designed thank you posters for their elementary schools and home parishes. Faculty joined in on Tuesday with a day-long appreciation for the students that included an ice cream des-sert and faculty table cleaning service during lunch. The students returned the favor on Thursday as they served the faculty during lunch periods and hand delivered food to administrative staff throughout the building. The week concluded on Friday with a Blessing of Families.

Students from Dana Kinsey’s Acting Technique and Dramaturgy classes performed “Lions in Illyria,” an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” for children in late February. The students performed at St. Anne School, Resurrection School and Our Lady of Angels School.

“Lions in Illyria” incorporated an educational component, lots of humor, modern music and a fun animal theme which were intended to entertain elementary students. LCHS students also were involved in the costume and makeup design for the performances.

Kinsey wrote a prologue to teach the students about Shakespeare and “Twelfth Night” that was performed by six of the drama students. “Lions in Illyria” is a modern adaptation and included opportunities for the elementary students to interact during the performance.
