Pro-Life! Hope has Two Beautiful Daughters: Anger

and Courage When reflecting upon our Catholic identity and

speaking of our personal relationship with God, all too often we can neglect to recognize the courage it takes to be a Christian; a true witness of the Good News of Jesus Christ. It takes courage to speak the Good News, to be true witnesses to the truths of our faith. St. Augustine had written: “Hope has two beautiful daughters. Their names are anger and courage; anger at the way things are, and the courage to see that they do not remain the way they are.” I believe that as a part of our faith journey, we have to reflect upon what makes us angry. Are we angry enough about what’s wrong with the world with the killing of millions of unborn children through abortion; the neglect of the poor and the elderly; the abandonment of the terminally ill? And, equally as important in our journey of faith is asking God for the courage of our convictions and the strength in our Catholic beliefs to change those things that must be changed in this world.

St. John Paul II inspires us to be a people of life who seek to change and transform the ills of this world: “To be actively pro-life is to contribute to the renewal of society through the promotion of the common good. It is impossible to further the common good without acknowledging and defending the right to life, upon which all the other inalienable rights of individuals are founded and from which they develop. A society lacks solid foundations when, on the one hand, it asserts values such as the dignity of the person, justice and peace, but then, on the other hand, radically acts to the contrary by allowing or tolerating a variety of ways in which human life is devalued and violated, especially where it is weak or marginalized. Only respect for life can be the foundation and guarantee of the most precious and essential goods of society, such as democracy and peace. There can be no true democracy without a rec- ognition of every person's dignity and without respect for his or her rights” (Evangelium Vitae 101). May we have the courage of our faith and the strength of our Catholic beliefs to become justifiably and righteously angry wherever and whenever human life is threatened!

Msgr. Geno Sylva

Mons. Geno Sylv
