AbriefhistoryofBarcelona

TheoriginsofthenameofBarcelonaarenotcertain,buttherearevarioustheoriesastoitsroots.

OneisthatthetribeoftheLayetanoswasconqueredbyCornelioEscipiónandthattheareasubsequentlybecameaRomancolonynamedIuliaAugustaPaternaFaventiaBarcino,fromwhichthenameofBarcelonawasderived.TheCarthaginiangeneralHamilcarBarcaisanotherpossiblesource,followinghisarrivalinHispania.

TheoriginsofthecitydatebacktothefirstcenturyB.C.,whentheRomansestablishedasmallcolonycalledBarcinoaroundMountTaber.TheremainsoftwoRomanwallsareatestimonytothisperiod.

Fromthe4thtothe13thcentury,BarcelonawentthroughamajorexpansionwhichconsolidatedthecoreofthecityfoundedbytheRomans.Towardstheendofthe13thcenturyasecondwallwasbuiltaroundtheCathedralofSantaMaríadelMar,aniconofmedievalBarcelona.IntheareaofLaRibera,whichsurroundstheCathedralofSantaMaríadelMar,anareaofcraftsmen’sworkshopsflourished.

TheunstoppablegrowthofthecitywasboostedbytheearlystagesofindustrialisationandbythetradegeneratedwiththeformercoloniesofCuba,theDominicanRepublicandCostaRica,whichtransformedtheOldRegime.However,therealrevolutionarrivedwhentheoldwallswerepulleddowninordertoexpandthecityinlinewithCerdà’splans,whichsawtheconstructionoftheareaofL’Eixample.

Thiswastheeraofthefirstrailway,whichjoinedBarcelonaandMataró(1850),andthissymbolofindustrialprosperitywouldsoonbereflectedinthecity’sarchitecture,asindustrialistshadartnouveauhousesbuiltforthemselves.OneofthemostnotablearchitectsofthetimewastheCatalanAntoniGaudí,whodesigned

Atthebeginningofthe20thcenturyBarcelonawasamoderncityandasocialandculturalmeltingpot.However,withtheoutbreakoftheSpanishCivilWarin1936andthesubsequentdictatorshipunderFranco,thecitysawsomeofitsdarkestdays.Inspiteofthis,economicdevelopmentcontinued,especiallyfromthe1950sonwards.
