Warm-Up ActivityEntrance Survey• Please complete the career survey on

your desk.

• After you have completed the survey please place it in the file folder located at your computer workstation.

• You will have 3 minutes!

What is Career Exploration?

Career exploration is the process of discovering one’s life passion—the

source of one’s energy and creativity—and one’s place in the

world.

How Often Will We Study Career Exploration?

• We will report to this location on the following days: (please write them down)– February 12– February 19– March 5– March 12

• A sign will be posted on my door to remind you.

How do I Know What Career is Right For Me?

• During these sessions you will participate in a career inventory that will ask specific questions about your interests.

• This inventory will provide you with detailed information about various occupations that are aligned with your interests.

• You will research the various occupations that you chose and learn about them.

Let’s Get Started!• You should have a file folder on your desk• All of your printed documents will be kept in

your Career Exploration portfolio.• Please PRINT your last name, and then your

first name. On the front, write Career Exploration Portfolio

• It should look like the image below:

Accessing the Program

• You should already be logged in to the computer.

• Go to start and open the Applications Program

• Click on “Career Education” in the left hand corner

• Double click the icon “Careers for Me Plus”

Questions?

• The program should open with the title Careers For Me Plus in the top left hand corner.

• Please click on the “Name” button in the bottom left hand corner. A space will appear for you to type your name…Please type in your first and last name.

Picking up Where We Left Off

• Everyone should have their printed results in their portfolio from last week’s session.

• Today we are going to do some research about the careers you chose.

• Please go to “Start” and pull up the Applications menu. Highlight “Career Education” in the left hand corner.

• Double click “Career For Me Plus.”

• In the bottom left hand corner please click on the tab “Name.”

• Please enter your first and last name.

• Now, we are going to skip ahead past the inventory questions to the screen titled.

“Check It Out”

What Does the Number Represent?

The number in the middle represents the answers you gave for that career cluster. The highest number represents the cluster you are most likely to excel in.

What was your highest number?

“Check It Out”

• During this activity you are going to learn more about the career choices that match the profile you created.

• Along with your results, you have been given two copies of the “Check it Out” worksheet. This will prevent you from having to go back and forth to each screen.

• You will use this worksheet to record your answers and then you will type them in after you have completed your research.

The “Job Guide”• Please click on the button at the

top right hand corner titled “Job Guide”

• In the “Job Guide” you will see a list of different careers. Look closely at the shapes, the job listings are categorized by the career clusters.

• Now look at the bottom left hand corner.

• You will see several boxes that will allow you to sort by career cluster.

“The Job Guide”

• Click on the box titled “Cluster”• Choose the cluster that you have

the highest number.• You will see a listing of the many

types of careers that fall in your highest cluster.

• Please choose a career by clicking on any type of job.

• A box will appear giving you a description of each job.

How to Find the Job You Want

• Once you have sorted your cluster using the highest number career cluster on your profile you may narrow down your search in the following ways:– Earnings– Education

• You may choose how much money you would like to make and how many years you plan on going to school to train for your career.

How to Find the Job You Want

• Pay attention to the sections at the top of the job chart labeled Personal Skills, Work Characteristics and Occupational Skills.

• There is a key in the top left hand corner to help you understand what the dots and arrows mean in each category.

• Once you have selected the job you think you are interested in record your findings on the “Check It Out!” Worksheet.

Completing “Check It Out”• Once you have finished locating the

job you are most interested in and you have completed the research click “Close Window”

• Complete the online “Check It Out” by typing in the answers you wrote down.

• Before moving on to Career 2 raise your hand to print your results.

• Complete these steps again for the second highest career cluster that your results indicated.

Turn in Your Portfolio

• Once you have printed your “Check It Out” activities place them in your portfolio.

• Turn your portfolio in to me.

Reflection

• What jobs did you find most interesting?

• What was your second career choice?

• How is this information helpful to you?

the questions to the screen titled “What activities can help you reach your goals?”

Complete All Activities

At the completion of each activity please raise your hand to print the following:– What activities can help you

reach your goals?– There are certain skills

employers want employees to have.

If You Finish Early

• If you finish early click the button in the bottom right hand corner labeled “Quit” and choose “Resume”

• You may create your own resume online!

• This is great for your portfolio!• If you didn’t get a chance to finish

your resume today you will have an opportunity at our next session

• Today we are going to create a passport that will help you with future activities:– Career Fair May 14, 2010– Career Field Trip May 21, 2010

• If you did not finish completing your online resume please do it now and place it in your portfolio.

When Your Finished

• Open Internet Explorer and type in www.thefunworks.org

– Click on the careers that interest you and learn more about the people who do them!

• Complete the Career Exploration Exit Survey
